One day, he is asked to accompany and play with an immensely rich and grim lady Miss Havisham, who lives in a large and dismal house, where Pip falls in love with the lady’s adopted daughter, Estella, the moment he meets her. But the girl is very proud and cold to him, because he is a common laboring-boy. Pip determines to become a gentleman. At this very time, an anonymous benefactor helps Pip to receive higher education in London to cultivate him to be a gentleman. But finally his unknown benefactor proves to be an escaped prisoner, Abel Magwitch, who is later caught and hanged by the police. When Pip learns to be a gentleman in London, he looks down upon his relatives and friends like Joe. But Joe pays off Pip’s debts and looks after him when Pip breaks up and falls ill. Pip asks Joe for forgiveness, and Joe forgives him. As Pip has lost his fortune upon Magwitch's death, he is no longer a gentleman. Pip promises to repay Joe and goes to Egypt, where he shares lodgings with Herbert and Clara and works diligently as a clerk. Eleven years later, Pip comes back and meets Estella again, and they are still friends apart.10 sentences that impress me most1. the space interposed between myself and them…geographical and social, solar and lunar”(243)2. The main clue of the novel is the growth of Pip. Given that this novel is one of the most mature works of Dickens’s later period, it contains D ickens’ deeper observation towards socie ty, which means after Dickens has experienced an enriched human life, he has a deeper understanding of what he has seen or experienced. Thus, the novel can stand for Dickens’s mature opinion with deeper thinking. One of the most consistently praised aspects of the novel, or one of the things that makes it such an extraordinary achievement, is Dickens's masterful depiction of Pip's character. The entire story is presented through this main character's eyes, which allows the reader a great deal of insight into Pip's psychology.。

Great Expectations, a Journey of Redemption and Self-Discovery.Bleak House and Miss Havisham's Haunting Dwelling. The novel opens with Pip, the protagonist, visiting Miss Havisham's eerie mansion, Satis House. This dilapidated abode, frozen in time and shrouded in gloom, serves as a haunting reminder of Miss Havisham's broken heart and thwarted love. Miss Havisham, a bitter and vengeful old woman, uses Pip as a pawn in her twisted game of revenge against the man who wronged her.Class and Society's Divide.Great Expectations explores the stark divide between the upper and lower classes in Victorian England. Pip's humble beginnings and subsequent rise in social status highlight the inherent inequalities and social barriersthat shape people's lives. Despite his newfound wealth, Pip struggles to reconcile his former self with his aspirations of becoming a gentleman. The Ambiguity of Morals and the Power of Forgiveness.Throughout the novel, Pip is torn between his loyalty to his benefactor, Miss Havisham, and his growing sense of justice. The ambiguity of morals is further explored through the character of Magwitch, a convict who becomes Pip's secret benefactor. Magwitch's kindness and selflessness challenge Pip's prejudices and force him to confront the true nature of good and evil. The Importance of Redemption and Personal Growth.Great Expectations is ultimately a journey of redemption and self-discovery. Through his experiences with Miss Havisham, Magwitch, and Estella, Pip learns the importance of forgiveness, compassion, and the value of true friendship. Despite the hardships he faces, Pip emerges as a more empathetic and mature individual, ultimately finding peace and happiness in his own identity.
Great ExpectationsIntroductionThe novel I read this time is “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens(1812-1870).He is the greatest representative of English critical realism.Dickens was bornin a poor family. At the age of 12, his father was put in prison and young Dickens was sentto work in a factory. From 1827 to 1829, Dickens worked as a clerk in a low firm and lateras a newspaper reporter.Dickens was horned by the Queen of England three months beforehis death on June 9, 1810.The words of his grave read as follows “by his death, one ofEngland’s greatest writers is lost to the world.”He has many maste rpieces, such as “A tale ofcities” “David Copperfield” “Hard time” “Oliver Twist” and so on.“Great Expectations”is one of his masterpieces. The story in this book happened in middle of 19 century and itreflects the gap between the rich and the poor in the capitalistic society. The summary of the bookThis story tells us about a young man who wished for the unreal/imaginary lives, andeventually his hope was extinguished by the real life.Pip was an unfortunate boy.Hisparents both died when he was a baby.He was brought upby his elder sister and herhusband Joe Gargery.Joe was kind to Pip and he also wanted Pip to be a good blacksmith. But the emergence of Estella has changed his life.He fell in love with Estella and he wanted to be a gentleman for her. Then a mysterious person came to help him to realize his greatexpectations. At first Pip thought that it was Miss Havisham, a strange woman made plansfor him.But at last, it proved that an escaped convict who he had helped when he was alittle boy was his benefactor. When the escaped convict was arrested again, his expectationswere at an end. Finally he realized that he only wanted to be a gentleman but he had ignoredhis old friends. He came to the real life again eventually. After suffering so many pains heand Estella came together at last.My view on this story“Great Expectations”, I think there is an irony included in this title. It relates to some unrealistic dreams. From this novel, I have learnt a lot.Firstly, I pick up several lessons from Pip.One can have great dreams, but we should achieve our dreams by our own effort instead of depending on other people. In this story, Pip had an unrealistic dream. He didn’t want to be a poor blacksmith like Joe.He wanted to be upper class people, to be a gentleman and he imagined that there was someone had made a plan for him.It is true that Abel Magwitch helped him secretly. But when Abel Magwitch was arrested, it put an end to Pip’s great expectations. He had nothing left. And in this book, Herbert and Pip form a poignant contrast.Herbert made great efforts to realize his dreams. In the end, his business was doingwell, and his company had offices overseas. Therefore, we should realize that if we want to achieve something or fulfill one of our ambitions, we must make efforts by ourselves. There is no one in the world that makes plans for us.And there is no short cut for success.Secondly, I have learned from Pip’s experience that we should be grateful to others. We know that Pip was brought up by his sister and Joe.And Biddy was also friendly to him when he was at home. But when he was helped by a mysterious person, he moved to London to learn being a gentleman. He began to be proud and look down upon those people at home.He wanted to forget his poor life and his poor friends. But when h is “great expectations” were ruined, it was still those people who helped him out of trouble. However, when he began to realize it, his sister has died;it was too late to say thanks to her. What I want to say is that no matter how successful we are, we should not be proud;we should not forget the people who had helped us, and return for them.If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now.Don’t hesitate until it is too late to give our thanks.Thirdly, I also learn some lessons from Miss Havisham, She is a woman full of hatred, and she lived in hatred for so many years. She brought Estella up in order to revenge on man.I think what she did is not worth at all.On one hand, she was not in real happiness, although she revenged on other people. On the other hand, she had ruined Estella’s life.In addition, she also made other men miserable. As for as I’m concerned, if I was Miss Havisham, I will choose another different kind of life.I will make myself live better than before to prove that I can live better without that man. From her experience, I think we should learn to forgive, learn to give up some bad things that had happened. No matter what had happened in the past, we should not be always lost in the pastand we are supposed to look forward, and continue our new life. There is no doubt that if she had chosen a positive way, she will have a satisfactory life. What’s more, when it comes to Estella, I want to say that we should live our own life, and do not only live up to others’ expectations. We kno w that, Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham to revenge on man.She did everything that Miss Havisham told her.We can say that she was “made” by Miss Havisham, and she was proud, cold.At last, following Miss havisham’s requirements she married to a man s he didn’t love at all.I think she lived an unhappy life. She only did as other people told her.And she didn’t do something what she liked.I think this kind of life is meaningless. We should have our freedom. It occurred to me that nowadays, parents have high expectations on their children. They decide so many things for their children without getting their children’s permission.I think children should have their choice of life.Parents should not put their children into cage.It is wise for them to set their children free to look for their own sky.In a word, from this book, I have learnt how to be myself, how to realize my dreams and how to live my own life. In thistterm , I read a book called 《 Great Expectations》, it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions.People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich.If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too.we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem. If we never possessanything, we will not mind we lost some thing.Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor. The protagonist of this novel is Pip(Handel). His parents died when he was a baby. His sister had brought him up ‘by hand’.His sister married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith. They didn’t have much money, and Pip never went to school to study. But he was often very happy.Because all of his friends are like him.It isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. But by a chance, Pip helped a convict;he gave much food to him. Then he met Miss Havisham, a very strange old woman and she was very rich.Four years later, Miss Havisham wants Pip to be removed from his home and educated as a gentleman who expects inherit a fortune when he grow up.After hearing that.Pip started to despise his poor friends. He even feel ashamed because he live with the poor man.Pip’s ‘great expectations’ destroyed his life. This novel told us that we cannot compare with others.Don’t feel envy at the others money. And if one day you be very rich , please don’t despise your poor fr iends. Great Expectations“Great expectations” is one of Dicken’s most maturest works. After Dicken had experienced large part of meaningful life, he had a deeper cognition for people, environment, as well as the life which he had gone through. And all the mature cognitions are included in this writing---Great expectations.pip was brought up by his sister who was unpleasant as well as crude and her friendly blacksmith husband—Joe.Joe himself had arranged a common hard but satisfied path for pip to go through, and on the other hand, pip beheld this as his highest goal to achieve. But the two things which he had experienced later had changed hispursue and his fate as well.Met Abel Magwith(an escaped convict)in the swamp, and unwillingly helped him out of danger by stealing food from his own home.If say that had changed his attitude for material life, then, his introduction to Miss Havisham, an aging woman who had been jilted at the alter and Estella who had been brought up by Havisham only to revenge for her own pain had brought vast shock for his world of spirit.Aspiring to be a gentleman despite his humble born, pip fortunately or unfortunately received a fund of wealth from an unknown source and being sent to London with a lawyer. From then on, he became a gentleman without question at the price of losing everything. The title of this book is ‘Great expectations” which make an impression on us that the character would have great expectations just as the title goes. But in fact this title has a tone of sarcastic on the other way around. This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot.One of the paragraphs, which I appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between pip and Estella.“We are friends,” said I, rising and bending over her, as she rose from the bench.‘And will continue friends apart.” Said Estella.I took his hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place;and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first let the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.At the view of language, this works had achieved a step o f highest, Dicken had made this writing plain and fluent as well, which surely can attract lots of readers and high comments. To be frank, I really impressed by this art of beauty. So I like Dicken’s works very much. To be simpleAfter reading the whole book of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right for the foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing. But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role —pared with the life of pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people.May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest adv antage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him.In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence(May be, in that period, it is common)。

I think there are three themes revealed in the novel Great Expectations.1.women are fragile. That is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called “hero saving the beauty”. This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men?s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure2.Facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. Or we can say that both menand women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. Women are restricted to families, which restrictsthem from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. The ordinary intelligence of women in marriage and love is exposed pletely. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. Bearing these two conflictive thoughts in mind, Havisham certainly fails to live her own life out of the control or influence from male.3.The discipline for women ]. A feminist De Bufuwa says: “One is called woman because she is ?made? not ?born.” Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham?s misfortunes are closely attached to loveand marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip, but at last she es back to him. And Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her husband. So in Dickens?s novel, women are decent on surface, but failed in heart.Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women?s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe that maleplays a dominant role. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male pany. Her ending somewhat is tragic but Estella harvests through a long time, but anyway she wins in depending man and leading a pleasant life. Recently, I have finished reading Great Expectations, which is widely considered as themasterpiece of Dickens. The historic background of this book is Victorian Period which was the time when British was governed by Queen Victoria. The hero of the book is Pip, who was living in a blacksmith family. Someday, he met Magwitch, who was a convict, and he helped him. To show his gratitude, Magwitch gavePip a good fortune and Pip led a totally different life after he got the money. However, Pip lost all of his money and fame because of his enemies’ plot at the last and e ordinary people at the last.Dickens is famous for his novel such as Great Expectations, the Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and so on. He always creates some people in lower class and show their different qualities. In Great Expectations, he tried to show us the conflict between different classes in VictorianPeriod by telling us the story of Pip. After Pip got the money, he left his friends and family to city, and then he learned to raise his social state. However, he was a child born in a blacksmith family and there’s a wide gap between him and the upper class. Finally, he lost all of his greatexpectations and went back to his hometown as ordinary people. Fortunately, he met his lover, Estella, in Satis House and they left there together at the end of the story. In the book, my favorite character is Joe, Pip’s brother in law. He was a blacksmith and belonged to the lower social class. However, he possessed some good qualities that made him noble. For example, though Joe didn’t know any w ord, he thought highly of Pip when Pip tried to write him a letter. What’s more, Pip’s sisteralways considered Pip as the burden of their family but Joe always believed that his brother can e successful. No matter how unkindly he was treated, Joe was always family to others. Undoubtedly, it’s Joe’s noble quality that prevents Pip from ing someone snobbish. In my opinion, the story of Pip is really attractive while the writing style is also special. For example, Dickens used simile and metaphor for many times in his book. When Joe visited Pip, Dickens wrote that Joe had taken his hat as a bird’s nest with egg in. I think it’s hard to show the inner world of characters as well as feeling because those things are really abstract. On the other hand, if we write it directly, that may be boring and childish. And by using simile, Dickens transforms the abstract feeling into visual language, with which we can use our imagination to enjoy the story much more easily. I think that we can also make good use of Dicke ns’s outstanding skills to improve our writing. After reading “Great Expectations”, many people plained that the class difference will always result in tragedy and they think that we should try to destroy those barriers. However, I think the massage that Dickens wants to deliver is that we should always be friendly,warm-hearted and optimistic. With these qualities, we can always lead a happy and fortable life like Joe even though we don’t have much money. Class one Student No.10 Name: Anna Wang Great Expectation was written by Charles Dickens (1812-1870), one of the most popular writers of all the time, who created some of the best-known characters in English literature. Great Expectation is similar to David Copperfield in that it is the story of a boy growing up.Pip has lost his parents when he was fifteen years old. He was brought up by his sister and her husband__Joe Gargery, a blacksmith who takes Pip on as an apprentice, teaches him his trade and makes friends with him. One day before Christmas, when Pip went to the churchyard where his parents were buried, he met an escaping convict__ Abel Magwitch. Pip brought cakes for the hungry man, which touched Abel deeply, although he was caught by police. After the Christmas, Pip was invited to play with Estella, a beautiful girl adopted by Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham was the richest man in the village. But she was very strange. She was dressed a bridal veil all the whole life after her fiancé left herat the wedding day, taking her a large amount of property. So she lived in the revenge and hated all the men. She treated Estella as a tool to take revenge on all man. When Pip met Estella, he loved her, so did Estella. But Estella knew she was just a tool to carry out the revenge plan of Miss Havisham, so she pretended to be proud, indifferent and look down upon Pip- a relative of a poor blacksmith, which broke Pip’s heart. As a consequence, Pip was determined to e a real gentleman who is in possession of money, good manners, luxurious life and a great expectation for Estella’s sake. Under the help of a stranger who donated a lot of money to him, Pip left Joe and the village, and went to London to live a luxurious life to learn to how to e a real gentleman. Pip started to waste money, look down upon other poor people, even including Joe, his brother-in-law and best friend! Gradually, Pip lost himself in the whirlpool of money, although he has had a large number of debts. As the same time, Estella has e more and more beautiful, graceful and brilliant. She walked in the crowd of men and married one of them as the Miss Havisham’s wish, which really tore Pip into pieces. And, as the same time, the mysterious benefactor of Pip came out. He is Abel- the escaping convict whom Pip has helped. When he escaped from the prison again,he earned much money and wanted to pay back Pip in that way. But Abel soon was caught by police and died. The properties he gave to Pipalso were confiscated by police. Pip fell from the heaven to hell. He co uldn’t stand it. As a result, he had a serious ill. After receiving a letter describing the bad situation of Pip, Joe came to London to look after Pip in spite of the bad attitude Pip ever towards him. After recovering, Pip realized his wrong. He decided to be a gentleman by his own endeavor. So he came back to the small village and spared no efforts to make business with his friend__Herbert. Several years later, Pip met Estella again at the old house of Miss Havisham. After knowing her husband has died and the real reason why Estella didn’t choose him before, Pip made a proposal to her. At last, the two lovers were in together and Pip found his real great expectation at the end. When I finished reading the novel, I also take consideration to the que stion “what a real great expectation is?” In my opinion, great expectation not means money, luxurious life provided by others, even the benefactors are your parents. It is our own dreams that we want to realize by our own efforts. Great expectation may be the further study, a respectable degree, agood job, a warm family or something else. But we must know that our future and great expectation must be mastered by our own. We should working for them, fighting for them, even dying for them, whatever. Only when we got what we want by our own endeavor, can we say we have had a great expectation.。
After Reading Great Expectations
After reading,i think that it was the great expectations that made the pip suffer many sorrows. The expectations, which were first aroused by Miss Havisham,a woman who wanted to take revenge on the all men. However, as the days went by ,I hold that pip started to be immersed in his great expectations happily. So,when he lived in London,he enjoyed the prosperity of London very much.He started to spend lavishly. The great expectations ,in my opinion, are similar to the fancy. The fame, the wealth, the love and so.on ,all of these can make us confused or even changed. I think of another man---Gatsby.He and pip,the two man were both lived in their fancy .They both thought that the money could buy the love.
So, when the pip had lived in London for a certain time, his mind changed gradually. For example,he felt a little shamed of the Joe who was his the most closest friend. And from then on ,there was a gap between Joe and him.In my view, pip is a person who easily influenced by circumstance. If everything went as before,I guess that he would be more ostentatious and indifferent.
However, everything changed when the convict came to London. When he knew that the convict was the person who had helped him and Estella could not be him,he was confused and
depressed. His expectations were at the end,but he was a kind person. So,he made many efforts to help the convict to escape. Because of these sorrows, he understood that the money could not make his expectations come true.He changed again and became more mature and more responsible.
Another thing I want to mention is that when Joe came to take care of pip,he called pip his name. But when pip recovered,he called him sir. It reveals that the sense of hierarchy in Britain was very serious. The poor and the noble were not equal. So, the pip wanted to be a gentleman to match the Estella.Estella preferred to marry a rich man who was rude ,which was also because of the sense of hierarchy. So,in my view,it was the sense of hierarchy that caused these tragedies.Another example i want to site is Wuthering Heights.Catherine did not marry Heathcliff who she loved ,because she thought it would degrade her identity. So,from this ,i infer that the sense of hierarchy was rooted in the heart of the British, and it restricted their behavior and mind.。
