AMy senior year of high school was a very hectic one, to say the least. If I wasn´t studying or worrying about my grades, I was working on after-class activities. It seemed as if my life had turned into one crazy cloud of confusion and I hoped to find some sort of direction. Finally, I got a part-time job at the local coffee shop. I had thought it would be easy and, for the most part, stress-free. I pictured myself pouring coffee and becoming close friends with my customers. What I hadn´t expected were the people with so many orders. There were moments when I was very angry simply because I couldn´t seem to please anyone. There was always too much sugar, too little ice, or not enough skim milk. However, I kept at it.One day, one of my customers came in, depressed. Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn´t ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw his favourite doughnut (甜甜圈) I had given him. He smiled and thanked me before heading out into the rain. The next evening, he came. Instead of ordering something, he handed me a single pink rose and a note.“Thanks for being so sweet and thoughtful yesterday. It is so nice to meet someone who´s warm and unselfish. Please don´t change your ways because I truly believe that you will do better. Have a great day!”As time went on, I did come across some customers really particular. But anytime I felt depressed, I thought of that man and his kindness. Then I would smile, hold my head up high, clear my throat and ask politely, “How can I help you?”1.What does the underlined word “hectic” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Glad.B. Interesting.C. Productive.D. Busy.2.What can we know about the author´s part-time job?A. It is easy and stress-free.B. It is quite busy and challenging.C . It doesn´t need special skills. D. It gives the author a feeling of freshness.3.What´s the message the author wants to convey?A. Kind words are worth much but cost little.B. It is impossible to satisfy everyone in our life.C. A small act of kindness can make a big difference.D. Our attitude determines our suffering or our freedom.BAn idea that started in Seattle´s public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The idea is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit(爱好) to be enjoyed by all, theprogramme allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起)the “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” project in 1998. Her original programme used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the “One Book, One Chicago” programme. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and characters. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved.Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself. As Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how many people read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.4.What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy?A.To invite authors to guide readers.B.To encourage people to read and share.C.To involve people in community services.D.To promote the friendship betweencities.5.Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project?A.They had little interest in reading.B.They were too busy to read a book.C.They came from many different backgrounds.D.They lacked support from the local government.6.The underlined words “shared a word” in Paragraph 5 probably mean .A.exchanged ideas with each otherB.discussed the meaning of a wordC.gained life experienceed the same languageCScientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do, the results may range from the disastrous (灾难性的) to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen. The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country´s bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated (交配) it with the more easy-going native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, which was the scientist´s name, had a total success on his hands. Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry. They attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places. But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees, with their dangerous stings (刺), began to attack their neighbours—cats, dogs, horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings. This would have been bad enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and North America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.7. The results of the South American experiment .A.are not importantB.are not yet certainC.have caused a serious troubleD.have proved to be wrong8. The experiment mentioned in this passage was designed to .A.make African bees less activeB.increase the number of bees in BrazilC.make Brazilian bees more easy-goingD.increase the amount of honey in Brazil9. Which of the following may be the cause of the new bees´ attacking personalities?A.Their bad temper.B.Their hard work.C.Their production of honey.D.Their living environment.10. The last paragraph implies that .A.the bees prefer to live in BrazilB.the bees must be stopped from moving northC.the bees may bring about trouble in more countriesD.the bees have been driven to Central and North America第二节阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important part? For early men, there were dangerous all around them—bad weather, wild animals. The key to keeping on living lay in man’s abili ty to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them in the past. In order for memories to be stored, the human brain became more complex. And as man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized (文明). Surprisingly, scientists today understand little about memory and how it works. They have not yet found a way to open up the brain and observe its function without destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of memory: short-term and long-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a few hours. For instance, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room number and forget as soon as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a long period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a particular hotel, it’s likely that you’ll remember your stay quite clearly.Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory through consolidation (巩固). A lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain.Although the human brain weighs three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells (神经细胞) acting like a computer. When those changes strengthen the links (联系) in certain nerve cells, a thought becomes part of the long-term memory.1. According to the author, without the development of man’s memory there would be _________.A. no modern worldB. no recorded historyC. no animalsD. no dangers2. Scientists’ knowledge about the function of brain is _________.A. interestingB. not enoughC. greatD. encouraging3. Short-term memory can change into long-term memory on condition that _________.A. memory is goodB. it acts like a computerC. people do more exerciseD. the links in nerve cells are strengthened by certain changes4. So far the great discovery scientists have made about the function of brain is _________.A. the weight of brainB. two types of memoryC. 30 billion nerve cellsD. chemical and physical changesBA “blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a “blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like. There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas in many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write about their ideas and react to the ideas of others.A research company called Perscus has studied more than 300 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives. The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year. However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products. At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service . He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago. And thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing. One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Website in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.Ms. Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything—politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.5. The text is mainly written to _________.A. introduce an Internet computer Web site called “blog”B. introduce a short way of saying Web logC. tell readers about blogsD. tell readers how to write blogs6. From the text we can learn that blogs cover almost everything except _________.A. different ideasB. medical adviceC. advertisementsD. account passwords7. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the text?A. Politicians don’t use blogs at all.B. A lot of bloggers no longer write or read blogs.C. Those who like to use blogs are mostly teenage girls.D. Dave Winer closed his “” because of money shortage.8. The reason why Rebecca’s Pocket is still going strong is that _________.A. it was created by a womanB. it is about the history of blogsC. it provides useful information and adviceD. it has editions in at least four different languagesCJersey City, New Jersey, Nov.10An underworld leader Gelato and three bodyguards were gunned down on Thursday by unknown attackers after a short gun battle.Gelato and two of the bodyguards died immediately, the police said, while the third bodyguard remains in serious condition at Margaret Haig Hospital. The only eyewitness told the police the three or four gunmen were dressed in overalls and hard hats like building workers. One pulled a light machine gun out of a bag and sprayed the four with bullets, the witness said. The other gunmen fired handguns.Three of the men fell immediately, but one of the bodyguards managed to pull his handgun and returned the fire before being shot himself, the witness said. The gunmen then jumped into a black car and drove off. Police said the car was later found in Stegmen Street.Police sources said the 48-year-old Gelato was the leader of a new crime syndicate (犯罪团伙), challenging the city gangsters (暴徒) for control of the city. The city gangsters decided to get rid of him. Killers were brought in from outside the state to do the job.Police are now waiting to question the surviving bodyguard when he came back to life.Gelato had a long police record with his first arrest when he was 14 years old. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle….They c ompare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake or correct it. Let him work out with the help of other children. If it is a matter of right answer in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time in such routine (日常的) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they do not know.13. According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by _________.A. liste ning to skilled people’s adviceB. asking older people many questionsC. making mistakes and having them correctedD. doing what other people do14. According to the writer, teachers in school should _________.A. allow children to learn from each otherB. point out children’s mistakes whenever foundC. correct children’s mistakes as soon as possibleD. give children more book knowledge15. The title of this passage could probably be _________.A. Let Us Teachers Stop WorkB. Let Us Make Children LearnC. Let Children Correct Their ExercisesD. Let Children Learn by ThemselvesE. 七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

While scientists are finding the ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri(MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with energy density(密度),” said Jae Known, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素)battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”Known and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, recently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro/nanoelectromechanical systems(M/NEWS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said. “ however, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor(半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure(晶体结构)of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said. “by using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that the battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.1.Which of the following is true of Jae Kwon?A.He teaches chemical battery.B.He developed a chemical energy source.C.He is working on a nuclear energy sourceD.He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.2.Jae Kwon gave example in Paragraph 4___________.A.To show chemical batteries are widely appliedB.To indicate nuclear batteries can be safely usedC.To describe a nuclear-power systemD.To introduce various energy sources3.Liquid semiconductor is used toA.Get rid of the radioactive waste.B.Test the power of nuclear batteries.C.Decrease the size of nuclear batteries.D.Reduce the damage to lattice structure4.According to Jae Kwon, his nuclear battery___________.es a solid semiconductor.B.Will soon replace the present ones.C.Could be extremely thin.D.Has passed the final test5.The text is most probably a ___________before appearing in daily ext life.A. science news reportB. book reviewC. newspaperD. science fiction storyBAn increase in students applying to study economics at university is being attributed to the global economic crisis awakening a public thirst for knowledge about how the financial system works.Application for degree courses beginning this autumn were up by 15% this January, according to UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. A spokesman for the Royal Economic Society said applications to do economics at A-level were also up.Professor John Beath, the president of the society and a leading lecturer at St Andrews University, said his first-year lectures-which are open to students from all departments-were drawing crowds of 400, rather than the usual 250.“There are a large number of students who are not economics majors, who would like to learn something about it. One of the things I have done this year is to relate my teaching to contemporary events in a way that one hasn’t traditionally done.” He said.University applications rose 7% last year, but there were rise above average in several subjects. Nursing saw a 15 %jump, with people’s renewed interest in careers in the public sector, which are seen as more secure in economic crisis.A recent study showed almost two thirds of parents believed schools should do more to teach pupils about financial matters, and almost half said their children had asked them what was going on, although a minority of parents felt they did not understand it themselves well enough to explain.Zack Hocking, the head of Child Trust Funds, said: “it’s possible that one good thing to arise from the downturn will be a generation that’s financially wiser and better equipped to manage their money through times of economic uncertainty.”6.Professor John Beath’s lectures are___.A.Given in a traditional wayB.Connected with the present situationC.Open to both students and their parentsD.Warmly received by economics7.Careers in the public sector are more attractive because of their___.A.greater stabilityB. Some people are compulsive(难以自制的)shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games.[2] Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to mall or stores more everyday, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopabolics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.[3] The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Somepeople go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopahlics say that they feel more import and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addition when they feel guilty.[4] Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addition, but it can_________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.1.List three activities that develop into addictions based on the text(Please answer within 8words).①_____________________________________________________.②_____________________________________________________.③_____________________________________________________.2.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3(Please answer within 8 words)?_________________________________________.3.
