1 Unit 3 Computers
Part 1 WHO AM I?
Over time I have been changed quite a lot. I began as a calculating machine in France in 1642.
Although I was young I could simplify difficult sums. I developed very slowly and it took nearly two
hundred years before I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Babbage. After I was
programmed by an operator who used cards with holes, I could “think” logically and produce an
answer quicker than any person. At that time it was considered a technological revolution and the
start of my “artificial intelligence”. In 1936 my real father, Alan Turing, wrote a book about how I
could be made to work as a “universal machine” to solve any difficult mathematical problem. From
then on, I
grew rapidly both in size and in brainpower. By the 1940s I had grown as large as a room,
Festivals and celebrations of all kinds have been held everywhere since ancient times.
Most
ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest
in autumn. Sometimes celebrations would be held after hunters had caught animals. At that time
people would starve if food was difficult to find, especially during the cold winter months.
Today’s festivals have many origins, some religious, some seasonal, and some for special people
or
events.
Festivals of the Dead
Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or to satisfy the ancestors, who might return
either to help or to do harm. For the Japanese festival Obon, people should go
to clean
the
graves
and light
incense in memory of their ancestors. They also light lamps and play music because
they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico people celebrate the Day

Although students are familiar with the topic of theme parks and they have

introduction to a theme park .
Ⅲ.Teaching methods
Help students prehend what a theme park is by showing them different pictures;
train students’ reading skills of skimming and scanning by giving them some tasks to
do; train students’ writing skills by reading the text.
