06 Passage 1Lane waited on the bench nearest the bridge, as he had been instructed. The strong cold wind blew straight across the river, and he had to pull his overcoat closer about him.He went over his instructions in his mind. The agent would appear at four o'clock. He would chat to Lane for a while, after which he would get up, leaving his newspaper behind. The plans would be found inside.A distant clock began to strike the hour. As if from nowhere, a man appeared and sat down beside Lane, placing his newspaper on the seat between them. He was thin and middle-aged, and seemed in need of a good meal. He didn't look like a successful spy, Lane thought. He bore no resemblance to Lane's idea of a successful spy. His conversation about the weather was painfully uninteresting.A few minutes later he got up and continued on his way. Lane picked up the paper which lay on the bench, as if he wanted to look at the news. He was excited to see the plans, pinned to the centre page. At that moment, however, there was a strong gust of wind which lifted the newspaper into the air, like a kite, and blew it into the river.1. Sitting on the bench, Lane ____.[A] memorized his orders[B] recited his orders[C] tried to remember his orders[D] repeated his orders to himself2. The agent was going to give Lane some important ____.[A] papers[B] information[C] instructions[D] advice3. Lane found the agent very ____.[A] impressive[B] peculiar[C] ordinary[D] well-fed4. Many people want to get rid of (摆脱) their cars, and they are doing just that. Police say that about 110 cars are abandoned every night in New York city. Why do people leave their cars to be towed (拖) away by the police? Maybe the car just doesn't run any more. It would have to be towed to the junk dealer. Besides the cost of towing, the car owners would have to find a way to get home from the junk yard. This might cost money, too. So the license plates are removed, and the car is abandoned. How can the police stop people from filling the streets with abandoned cars? Faced with about 21,000 abandoned cars a year, the Chicago police made a plan. They checked engine registration numbers and were able to find the owners of the cars. Then the owners were charged for the towing. So far, the plan has turned the problem into a profit. The city has collected almost a million dollars from the towing, and sale of abandoned cars.Even if the city police can stop people from abandoning cars, we still must face the problem of cars that wear out. At present, there are about 40 million cars in junk yards across the country, and that number keeps going up.How can the U.S. Get rid of its large and growing car junk yards? A U.S. Senator from Illinois said that the government should use the tax collected on new cars to pay for the "burial" of old cars.If you're thinking of looking for and fixing up an abandoned car, forget it! You have to have a bill of sale or title from the owner before you can get new license plates.6. The author's purpose is ____.[A] to call for a tax on new cars[B] to praise the Chicago police[C] to tell about the problem of abandoned and worn-out cars[D] to tell you how to get a car7. From the information in this article, you could not say that ____.[A] abandoned cars are a nuisance[B] worn-out cars are piling up in junk yards[C] Chicago police found a solution to abandoned cars[D] if you want a car, find one that's been abandoned8. If one has to drive a car legally, one has to ____.[A] have a license plate[B] pay for the towing of the car[C] get rid of his old car properly[D] pay for the burial of his old car9. In this selection, the word "tow" probably means ____.[A] sell[B] drag[C] throw[D] collect10. A word opposite in meaning to "profit" is ____.[A] expense[B] gain[C] loss[D] payment06 Passage 3About three hundred words in the English language come from the names of people. Many of these words are technical words. When there is a new invention or discovery, a new word may be created after the inventor or scientist. It is interesting to observe how many common words have found their way into the language from the names of people. Lord(贵族) Sandwich who lived from 1718--1792 used to sit at the gambling(赌博) table eating slices of bread with meat in between. As the Lord was the only one among his friends who ate bread in that way, his friends began to call the bread "sandwich" for fun. Later on the word became part of the English language. The word "boycott" means to refuse to have anything with somebody or something. It comes from a man called Captain Boycott. He was a land agent in 1880 and he collected rents and taxes (税) for an English landowner in Ireland. But the Captain was a very hard man. He treated his poor tenants (房客) very badly. His tenants decided not to speak to him at all. Eventually word got back to the landowner and the Captain was removed. The word "boycott" became popular and was used by everyone to mean the kind of treatment that was received by Captain Boycott.11. The tenants did not like____.[A] to collect rents and taxes[B] the English landowner[C] the cruel land agent[D] to speak15. When the landowner found out that the tenants were boycotting his land agent, he ____.[A] dismissed(解雇) the agent[B] praised the agent[C] removed the poor tenants[D] increased the rents and taxes06 Passage 4In the past ten years several experts have tried to teach language to apes. One American psychologist trained his ape named Sarah to make sentences on a computer. Another American scientist trained an ape named Washoe to make signs for words. A third American scientist also trained an ape named Nim Chimpsky to use sign language. Nim learned over a hundred signs for different words. But can we say that these apes learned language?Dr. Herbert Terrace of New York City is a psychologist. He wanted to study the language ability of apes. He decided that he would raise a young ape in his home. He would send this ape to school, and teachers would teach him sign language. Then doctor Terrace would give different language tests to the ape. By this experiment he would discover if apes could learn language.Dr.Terrace's ape, a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky, went to nursery school at Columbia University. There he had special teachers who taught him signs for English words. These teachers worked with Nim for five hours every day. They treated Nim lovingly and patiently. In four months Nim learned the signs for 125 words. But during the next two years Nim's language did not improve very much. Nim still had a small vocabulary. Most of Nim's words were nouns for visible things such as table or apple. Nim learned a few active verbs such as bite. Jump, and hurry. He also learned some basic colors such as blue and red. Nim would often use two or three words together. He might make signs that said, "Nim eat apple." This seemed like an English sentence. But Nim would also use signs meaning "eat Nim apple. " This is not a correct English sentence.Dr. Terrace decided that Nim could not really learn language as humans can. For example, Nim never created new words. He never added new information to his sentence. Nim couldn't even begin sentences. He would only give responses to his teachers' questions. Will future experiments show that apes can learn language? Dr. Terrace doesn't think so.16. The main purpose of the several experiments with apes is to ____.[A] make sure how many words an ape can master[B] discover whether apes have the ability to learn language[C] know whether sign language will be acceptable in the future[D] decide the differences between humans and apes17. How long did the experiment with Nim last?____[A] 24 months [B] 4 months [C] 14 months [D] 28 months18. Nim's vocabulary was largely ____.[A] nouns for things he saw [B] verbs that were active[C] words for things at school [D] words for things he could eat19. Which of the following is Not True?____[A] Dr. Terrace raised Nim in his home [B] Dr. Terrace hired special teachers for Nim[C] Dr. Terrace taught Nim language [D] Dr. Terrace tested Nim's vocabulary20. Which of the following is Not True?____[A] Nim learned more nouns than verbs and adjectives[B] Nim had a small vocabulary after 4 months of learning [C] Nim often used two or three words at a time [D] Nim learned to speak English in four months21. Dr. Terrace finally decided that apes could not learn language mainly because ____.[A] they can hardly answer humans' questions[B] they can not make themselves understood[C] they can never learn in an active and creative way [D] all of the above22. The passage tells us that ____.[A] apes don't have language ability [B] Dr. Terrace is not a good psychologist[C] apes can learn signs for nouns and verbs [D] talking apes can only be a future possibility[总题数:22;总分数:44分;总参考时间:44分0秒]。

Deeply ReadingKite flying is the sport of sending up into the air,by means of the wind , a light frame covered with paper, plastic or cloth. The frame can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history of practical application and many different types of kite have been debeloped to serve various purposes. The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valleys. The current folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved type of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird-like wings,it looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually made of tissue-paper rather than the traditional silk.Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, for getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact , as recently as world 2 ,German U-boats flew kites from their towers to lift people into the air to watch the land. These kites ,which are no longer in existence, were made of light-weight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Theirdesign, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for children, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame,no wings and brown-paper covering.Box-kites are another type of kite found in toy shops today. The first box-kite,named for its box-like body, was developed in the nineteenth century to test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly assisted the success of early aeroplane. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box-kite,which consists of two main sections, placed side by side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind,it is the only modern kite described which has practical value . A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.1. _________________________________________________________________ The ancient Chinese bird-kites were usually made of light frames covered with _______________ .a. silkb. paperc. clothd. plastic2. _________________________________________________________________________ The kites used by German U-boats in would war 2 for the military purpose were made of ________ .a. brown paperb. plastic materialc. light-weight clothd. traditional silk3. _________________________________________ T he ancient Chinese man-lifting kites were used ___________________________________________ .a. to carry ropes across rivers and valleysb. for the military purposec. as toy for childrend. for fishing in strong sea wind4. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct. Ignorance is not a defense."But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but manage to fool themseelves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Everyone else does it," "I'm not hurting anyone," or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm looking at another's exam, even though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not cheating because I'm just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses. If we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immediate benefits ("what's in it for me"), and simply haven't considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious, and may include a "0" on a test or assignment; an "F" in the class; Suspension or Dismissal from school; transcript notation; and a tarnished reputation. In fact, when you break a rule or law, you lose control over your life, and give others the power to impose punishment: you have no control over what that punishment might be. This is an extremely precarious and vulnerable position. There may be some matters of life and death, or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there aren't many things that fall in this category.Getting Away With It--Or NotThose who don't get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesn't learn from the test, depriving him/herself of an education. Cheating undermines confidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-esteem and integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty, and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences. Students have been dismissed from school because they didn't get this simple message: Honesty is the ONL Y policy that works.Cheating Hurts Others, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don't count" and don't really hurt anyone. But individual choices have a profound cumulative effect. Cheating can spread like a disease, and a cheater can encourage others just by being seen from across the room. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hurts others' grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and others may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don't cheat, I can't compete with those who do.") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The real reward of good teaching is seeing students learn, but a cheater says, "I'm not interested in what you're trying to teach; all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is a blatant and destructive attack on the quality of your education. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the University, and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MattersIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. We must rely on the honesty and good faith of others every day. If not, we couldn't put money in the bank, buy food, clothing, or medicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can have. The savings and loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindles, and, of course, Watergate, have undermined the faith of many Americans in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whole. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation's economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for education. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community, and our society. Our actions do matter. It is essential that we act with integrity in order to build the kind of world in which we want to live.1. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words).1.Skipping ReadingPersonality is to a large extent inherent—a type parents usually bring about a type offspring. But the environment must also have a profound effect, since if competition is important to the parents, it is likely to become a major fact or in the lives of their children. One place where children soak up A characteristics is school, which is, by its very nature, a highly competitive institution. Too many schools adopt the win at all costs moral standard and measure their success by sporting achievements. The current passion for making children compete against their classmates or against the clock produces a two-layer system, in which competitive A types seem in some way better than their B type fellows. Being too keen to win can have dangerous consequences: remember that Pheidippides, the first marathon runner, dropped dead seconds after saying: “Rejoice, we conquer!By far the worst form of competition in schools is the disproportionate emphasis on examinations. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concentrate on those things they do well. The merits of competition by examination are somewhat questionable, but competition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful.Obviously, it is neither practical nor desirable that all A youngsters change into B’s. The world needs types, and schools have an important duty to try to fit a child’s personality to his possible future employment. It is top management. If the preoccupation of schools with academic work was lessened, more time might be spent teaching children surer values. Perhaps selection for the caring professions, especially medicine, could be made less by good grades in chemistry and more by such considerations as sensitivity and sympathy. It is surely a mistake to choose our doctors exclusively from A type stock. B’s are important and should be encouraged.Questions:1. Beside inherence, personality is also deeply effected by ______________________.2. Person who has A characteristics is ______________________________________.3. What was disagreed to in schools by the author? ______________________________.4. Why is top management of school to fit a child’s personality____________________.5. According to the 5th Para., B’s characteristic is suggested to be ________________.2.Deeply ReadingKite flying is the sport of sending up into the air,by means of the wind , a light frame covered with paper, plastic or cloth. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutter kite. A long-lasting plastic material has to be used for this kite, which carries fishing lines.1.The ancient Chinese bird-kites were usually made of light frames covered with_____.a.silkb.paperc.clothd.plastic2.The kites used by German U-boats in would war 2 for the military purpose were made of _____.a.brown paperb.plastic materialc.light-weight clothd.traditional silk3.The ancient Chinese man-lifting kites were used_____.a.to carry ropes across rivers and valleysb.for the military purposec.as toy for childrend.for fishing in strong sea wind4.Which of the following statements is not ture?a.The frame of a kite is attached to long string held in the hand or wound on drum.b.The ancestor of the double box-kite.c.The cutter kite has a diamond-shaped body but no wings.d.The current folding kite is developed to test theories of flight.5.The best title for this passage may be______.a.The ancestors of modern kitesb. The history of the chinese kitesc.different types and uses of kitesd.the different between ancient and modern kites.3.Fast ReadingWhy Integrity MattersWhat is Integrity?"Integrity" is defined as "adherence to moral and ethical principles; honesty." But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct. If we fool ourselves into believing we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choicewe're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watching over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future aswell as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usuallycheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. AIt’s no secret that kids are much more physically active when they’re outside. But according to a new study, children are 适当的 spending less time outdoors than ever before.A research team at the National Trust for Nature Conservation wanted to find out how modern activities affected the amount of time kids spend outdoors. They found that children are only spending an average of 4 hours a week playing in the great outdoors (户外活动). That’s just half the amount of time their grandparents spent outdoors as kids.Instead, kids are spending more time indoors playing video games or watching TV.It’s not just about how much kids enjoy playing indoors more; parents are playing a larger role (作用) too. The study found that 52% of parents admit that they lack (缺乏) the confidence to teach their kids outdoor skills. This is in comparison to 40% who were confident enough to teach their kids when they were growing up.Several parents admitted that they’re worried about letting their children play outdoors because of the traffic, strangers or even allergies (过敏症) . Meanwhile, other parents said they prefer their kids to stay indoors in order to keep the house clean. The question is: What are kids really missing out on by not spending more time outside?Well, research has found that kids who spend more time in nature are generally happier and healthier. Outdoor play develops a variety of areas, such as physical skills, coordination, and social skills. So while TV and video games can be fun and educ ational, it’s also important to make sure your kids get the right balance of indoor and outdoor play.1. According to the passage, children today spend ________ playing in the great outdoors as children in the past.A. twice as much timeB. half as much timeC. a similar amount of timeD. a lot more time2. Eco tourists are people who appreciate nature and want to do their part to protect it.So why can’t people just travel like any other tourist? Unfortunately, traditional tourism can have a negative impact on the environment. For example, the transportation used by traditional tourists, such as airplanes and buses, produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. In addition, many tourists visit beautiful natural sites but do not respect or protect the areas they travel to. They might throw garbage on the ground, scare away animals, or pick flowers. This can damage ecosystems and harm plants and animals. Finally, traditional tourism often brings in large amounts of money, but only a small part of it goes to the local people. The largest part of the money usually goes to tour companies and big hotel chains.Eco tourists, on the other hand, try to have a smaller impact on the environment. They usually use transportation that produces fewer greenhouse gases. They also try to reduce the pollution they produce at hotels and campsites. Part of being an eco tourist is also learning about andrespecting the culture of the people who live in the places they visit. Eco tourists often stay in hotels that are locally owned or eat at locally owned restaurants, so that more money goes to the local community.16. What is the purpose of eco tourism?A. To conserve natural areas.B. To improve global well-being.C. To reduce the amount of greenhouse gases.D. To make money for tour companies.17. According to the passage, why is traditional tourism bad for the environment?A. It creates jobs for local people.B. It doesn't respect local culture.C. It harms ecosystems and animals.D. (完整版)大一英语上学期期末考试试卷2022级高校英语第一学期期末考试(A卷)Jan., 2022Part II Reading Comprehension (30 %) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneScience is not a set of unquestionable results but a way of understanding the world around us. Its real work is slow. The scientific method , as many of us learned in school, is a gradual process that begins with a purpose or problem or question to be answered. It includes a list of materials, a procedure to follow, a set of observations to make and, finally, conclusions to reach. In medicine, when a new drug is proposed that might cure or control a disease, it is first tested on a large random group of people, and their reactions are then compared with those of another random group not given the drug. All reactions in both groups are carefully recorded and compared, and the drug is evaluated. All of this takes time and patience. It’s the result of course, that makes the best news—not the years of quiet work that characterize the bulk of scientific inquiry. After an experiment is concluded or an observation is made, the result continues tobe examined critically. When it is submitted for publication, it goes to a group of the scientist’s colleagues, who review the work. Einstein was right when he said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right, a single experiment can at any time prove me wrong.”In August 1996, NASA announced the discovery in Antarctica of a meteorite(流星)from Mars that might contain evidence of ancient life on another world. As President Clinton said that day, the possibility that life existed on Mars billions of years ago was potentially one of the great discoveries of our time. After the excitement wore down and initial papers were published, other researchers began looking at samples from the same meteorite. Some concluded that the “evidence of life”was mostly contamination from Antarctic ice or that there was nothing organic at all in the rock. Was this a failure of science, as some news reports trumpeted? No! It was a good example of the scientific method working the way it is supposed to. Scientists spend years on research, announce their findings, and these findings are examined by other scientists. That’s how we learn. Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two. It’s a process filled with disappointments and reverses, but somehow we keep moving ahead.21. The author’s main purpose in writing this passage is to state that ____________.A) most scientific discoveries are not reliableB) mass media is misleading because it looks at the research results onlyC) scientific research is a process filled with reverses and requiresslow and patientworkD) repeated experiments are necessary before medicine can be used in patients22. Publication of a scientific finding signifies __________.A) a challenge to fellow scientists to prove it wrongB) the end of a processC) the beginning of a new scientific inquiryD) the soundness of the result23. Einstein’s words are used to show that he thought___________.A) experiments have proved him rightB) scientists do not need so many experimentsC) one experiment is not enough to prove him wrong.D) scientific ideas are never free from challenge24. NASA’s announcement of the discovery of evidence of ancient life on Mars shows _________.A) the way human beings learn about natureB) the failure of the scientific methodC) the fruitlessness of human search for life on another worldD) the excitement brought by scientific findings25. It can be inferred from the passage that the media is interested in __________.A) the process of scientific researchB) the results of scientific researchC) the scientists who do the researchD) the effects of scientific research on human lifePassage TwoNormally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressureand strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find timefor great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.26. Normally a student would at least attend __________classes each week.A) 36B) 12C) 20D) 1527. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed _______.A) to live in a different universityB) to take a particular course in a different universityC) to live at home and drive to classesD) to get two degrees from two different universities28. The student organizations seem to be effective in _________.A) dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB) ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC) evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD) keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesPassage ThreeDoreen Sykora is now a junior at Mcgill University. She had a difficult time when she first began college. She said, “I was always well prepared for my examinations. But I would go in to class to take the exam, and I would fall apart. I could not answer the questions correctly-----even though I knew the answers! I would just blank out because of nervousness and fear.”HitoshiSakamoto, an anthropology student at Temple University in Tokyo reports similar experiences. These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because a student worries and is stressed about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the severe tension and nervousness. Now there are special university courses to help students. In these courses, advisors and psychologists try to help students by teaching them to manage test anxiety. Such a course helps students learn to live with stress and not fail because of it. First students take a practice test to measure their worry level. If the tests show that their stress level is high, the students can take a short course to manage the fear. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. They get training to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work more easily. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.Doreen Sykora saw immediate results after taking such a course. She now has enthusiasm about the relaxation methods. “Mostly, what I do is imagine myself in a very calm place. Then I imagine myself picking up a pencil. I move slowly and carefully. I breathe easily and let all the tension out. With each breath, more worry leaves me. It really works too. My grades have improved greatly! I’m really doing well at McGill now. This relaxation method works not only on examinations, but it has improved the rest of my life as well.”For Hitoshi in Tokyo, the results were much the same. He is enjoying school a lot more and learning more.31. No one speaks for very long. Speakers take turns frequently, often after only a few sentences have been spoken. “Watching a conversation between two Ame ricans is like watching a table tennis game,” a British observer said. “Your head goes back and forth and back and forth so f astit almost makes your neck hurt.”Americans tend to be impatient with people who take long turns. Such people are said to “talk too much.” Many Americans have difficulty paying attention to someone who speaks more than a few sentences at a time, as Nigerians, Arabs, and some others do. Americans admire conciseness, or what they call “getting to thepoint.”Americans engage in little ritual interaction (礼仪式的交流). Only a few ritual greetings are common: “How are you?” “I’m fine, thank you,” “Nice to meet you,” and “Hope to see you again.” These things are said in certain situations Americans learn to recognize, and, like any ritual greetings, are concerned more with form than with substance. That is, the questions are supposed to be asked and the statements are supposed to be made in particular situations, no matter what the people involved are feeling or what they really have in mind. In many American’s opinions, people who rely heavily on ritual greetings are “too shy” or “too polite,” unwilling to reveal their true natures and ideas.Americans are generally impatient with long ritual greetings about family members’ health—common among Latin Americans—considering them a waste of time.47. During a typical conversation between Americans, people try to be ________.a. politeb. interestedc. concised. friendly48. By comparing a conversation between two Americans toa table tennis game, the British observer means that _________.a. Americans like to take short turns in a conversationb. Americans enjoy talking as well as watching a table tennis gamec. Americans get excited easilyd. Americans talk with great expression49. Americans ___________ when they talk with Arabs.a. may lose their patienceb. have to listen very carefullyc. talk too muchd. never use English50. In the United States, ritual greetings __________.a. are very common in people’s conversationsb. are suitable in all situationsc. help to lead to a serious conversationd. have little substance51.According to this passage, Americans have a low opinion of people who ____________.a.. do not talk muchb. do not pay attention to the speakerc. like to ask about other people’s healthd. bring too many ritual greetings into a conversationPassage 2Ask most American children what they want to be when they grow up, and they probably will say “doctor” or “lawyer.”Though our culture, our economy, indeed our very security are heavily dependent on science and engineering, only 12 percent of American high school students graduate with the prerequisites(必要条件) for a career in science or engineering. Worse yet, only 6 percent of minority children are said to be soprepared.Don’t be too surprised. If you ask further why the majority of the high school students would choose a career in medicine or law, the answers will be straight out of some popular TV shows.“Doctors help people. They save lives.” “Lawyers beat the bad guys.” Most students would say. Now, how about science or engineering as a career choice? The answers will be just as predictable: “Get rea l! Who wants to be a geek? They all are nerds. Besides, I hate m ath.”In our media, scientists and engineers typically are portrayed as introverted(内向的) and humorless. They always wear white lab coats, with a collection of pencils in their pocket protectors. They wear glasses with black plastic frames. If more students are to choose technical careers, they must have a better view presented to them. They need to be told, for instance, that the invention of lifesaving equipment saves lives just as surely as the application of it in the hospital. It also might help if someone emphasized to students that the lawyer who saved the defendant(被告) by introducing the DNA evidence would have seen him hanged had it not been for the scientists who discovered DNA.Whatever we do, until students stop thinking of the term “engineer” as a synonym for “geek,” it is impossible to expect our children to change their views towards scientists and engineers.52. What is the problem with most American children when they choose their careers?a. They have a very low opinion of science and engineering.b. They are too anxious to succeed in different fields.c. They are not sure what career suits them best.d. They do not have enough confidence in themselves.53. Which of the following has influenced American students greatly in their choice of their careers?a. Parents’ opinions.b. TV shows and various publications.c. In order t o change the students’ view towards scientists and engineers, the writer suggests that _________.a. teachers reconsider their way of teaching mathematicsb. students be told about the wonders of science and engineeringc. scientists and engineers change their images a little bitd. the media stop praising doctors and lawyers excessively56.. Judging from what is said in the passage, the writer obviously believes that _________.a. scientists and engineers are more important than doctors and lawyersb. science and engineering have been dangerously ignoredc. American children are hopelessd. there are too many scientists and engineers nowadaysPassage 3Reaching new peaks of popularity in North America isIceberg Water, which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.Arthur von Wiesenberger, who carries the title Water Master, is one of the few water critics in North America. As a boy, he spent time in the larger cities of Italy, France and Switzerland, where bottled water is consumed daily. Even then, he kept a water journal, noting the brands he liked best. “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water,” He says. But is plain tap water all that bad? Not at all. In fact, New York’s municipal water for more than a cent ury was called the champagne of tap water and until recently considered among the best in the world in terms of both taste and purity. Similarly, a magazine in England found that tap water from the Thames River tasted better than several leading brands of bottled water that were 400 times more expensive.Nevertheless, soft-drink companies view bottled water as the next battle-ground for market share—this despite the fact that over 25 percent ofbottled water comes from tap water: PepsiCo’s Aquafina and Co ca-Cola’s Dasani are both purified tap water rather than spring water. As diners thirst for leading brands, bottlers and restaurateurs salivate (垂涎) over the profits. A restaurant’s typical mark-up on wine is 100 to 150 percent, whereas on bottled water it’s often 300 to 500 percent. But since water is much cheaper than wine, and many of the fancier brands aren’t available in stores, most diners do n’t notice or care.As a result, some restaurants are turning up the pressure to sell bottled water. According to an article in The Street Journal, some of the more shameless tactics include placing attractivebottles on the table for a visual sell, listing brands on the menu without prices, and pouring bottled water without even asking the diners if they want it.Regardless of how it’s sold, the popularity of bottled water taps into our desire for better health, our wish to appear cultivated, and even a longing for lost purity.57. What do we know about Iceberg Water from the passage?a. It is a kind of iced water.b. It is just plain tap water.c. It is a kind of bottled water.d. It is a kind of mineral water.58. By saying “My dog could tell the difference between bottled and tap water” (Para. 2), von Wiesenberger wants to convey the message that ________.a. plain tap water is certainly unfit for drinkingb. bottled water is clearly superior to tap waterc. bottled water often appeals more to dogs tasted. dogs can usually detect a fine difference in taste59 The “fancier brands” (Para. 5) refers to ________.a. tap water from the Thames Riverb. famous wines not sold in ordinary storesc. PepsiCo’s Aqua fina and Coca-Cola’s Dasanid. expensive bottled water with impressive names60. Why are some restaurants turning up the pressure to sell bottled water?a. Bottled water brings in huge profits.b. Competition from the wine industry is intense.c. Most diners find bottled water affordable.d. Bottled water satisfied diners’ desire to fashionable.61. Reading Comprehension (20 points)Directions: In this part, there are two passages. Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. (20 points: 10×2 points)Passage OneInternet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others. The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推测). Faceless, bodiless virtual communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology, it’s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study' s sponsors (发起人). “It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”16. What's the finding of the research undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University?A. People spend more time on the Internet now.B. People spend less time with their families and friends now.C. The Net proves socially healthier than television.D. Internet use may cause a drop in psychological health.17. What had the researchers expected before the research?A. The Net may account for the drop in psychological health.B. Internet use may improve social health.C. Internet use has nothing to do with social health.D. Spending much time on the Internet makes people feel bad and lonely.18. Which is NOT true according to the passage?A. The Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.B. Internet communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation.C. Undeveloped Internet technology causes the drop in psychological health.D. The wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.19. What does Christine Riley, the psychologist, suggest?A. It's necessary to take social factors into account in designing applications and services fortechnology.B. It's important to tell the users how to design and apply the technology.C. Compared with social factors, the technology itself has more influence on the Internet users.D. No social factors should be considered in applications and services for technology.20. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage?A. How to Use the InternetB. Disadvantages of the InternetC. Social Factors and the InternetD. Internet May Cause Bad FeelingsPassage TwoThe $11 billion self-help industry is built on the idea that you should turn negative thoughts like "I never do anything right" into positive ones like "I can succeed." But was positive thinking advocate Norman Vincent Peale right? Is there power in positive thinking?Researchers in Canada just published a study in the journal Psychological Science that says trying to get people to think more positively can actually have the opposite effect: it can simply highlight how unhappy they are.The study's authors, Joanne Wood and John Lee of the University of Waterloo and Elaine Perunovic of the University of New Brunswick, begin by citing older research showing that when people get feedback which they believe is overly positive, they actually feel worse, not better. If you tell your dim friend that he has the potential of an Einstein, you're just underlining his faults. In one 1990s experiment, a team including psychologist Joel Cooper of Princeton asked participants to write essays opposing funding for the disabled. When the essayists were later praised for their sympathy, they felt even worse about what they had written. In this experiment, Wood, Lee and Perunovic measured 68 students' self-esteem. The participants were then asked to write down their thoughts and feelings for four minutes. Every 15 seconds, one group of students heard a bell. When it rang, they were supposed to tell themselves, "I am lovable."Those with low self-esteem didn't feel better after the forced self-affirmation. In fact, their moods turned significantly darker than those of members of the control group, who weren't urged to think positive thoughts. The paper provides support for newer forms of psychotherapy that urge people to accept their negative thoughts and feelings rather than fight them. In the fighting, we not only often fail but can make things worse. Meditation (静思) techniques, in contrast, can teach people to put their shortcomings into a larger, more realistic perspective. Call it the power of negative thinking.21. What do we learn from the first paragraph about the self-help industry?A. It is a highly profitable industry.B. It is based on the concept of positive thinking.C. It was established by Norman Vincent Peale.D. It has yielded positive results.22. What is the finding of the Canadian researchers?A. Encouraging positive thinking many do more harm than good.B. There can be no simple therapy for psychological problems.C. Unhappy people cannot think positively.D. The power of positive thinking is limited.23. What does the author mean by "… you're just underlining his faults" (Line 4, Para. 3)?A. You are not taking his mistakes seriously enough.B. You are pointing out the errors he has committed.C. You are emphasizing the fact that he is not intelligent.D. You are trying to make him feel better about his faults.24. What do we learn from the experiment of Wood, Lee and Perunovic?A. It is important for people to continually boost their self-esteem.B. Self-affirmation can bring a positive change to one's mood.C. Forcing a person to think positive thoughts may lower their self-esteem.D. People with low self-esteem seldom write down their true feelings.25. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. The effects of positive thinking vary from person to person.B. Meditation may prove to be a good form of psychotherapy.C. Different people tend to have different ways of thinking.D. People can avoid making mistakes through meditation.Part III. Filling in the blanks (5 points)Directions: In this part, there is a passage with five blanks. Then answer the questi ons or complete the statements in the fewest possible words (not exceeding 10 words).1.Skipping ReadingPersonality is to a large extent inherent—a type parents usually bring abo ut a type offspring. But the environment must also have a profound effect, since if competition is important to the parents, it is likely to become a m ajor fact or in the lives of their children. One place where children soak up A characteristics is school, which is, b y its very nature, a highly competitive institution. Too many schools adop t the win at all costs moral standard and measure their success by sportingachievements. The current passion for making children compete against t heir classmates or against the clock produces a two-layer system, in whic h competitive A types seem in some way better than their B type fellows. Being too keen to win can have dangerous consequences: remember that Pheidippides, the first marathon runner, dropped dead seconds after sayin g: “Rejoice, we conquer!By far the worst form of competition in schools is the disproportionate e mphasis on examinations. It is a rare school that allows pupils to concentr ate on those things they do well. The merits of competition by examinatio n are somewhat questionable, but competition in the certain knowledge of failure is positively harmful.Obviously, it is neither practical nor desirable that all A youngsters chan ge into B’s. The world needs types, and schools have an important duty to try to fit a child’s personality to his possible future employment. It is top management. If the preoccupation of schools with academic work was lessened, more ti me might be spent teaching children surer values. Perhaps selection for th e caring professions, especially medicine, could be made less by good gra des in chemistry and more by such considerations as sensitivity and symp athy. It is surely a mistake to choose our doctors exclusively from A type stock. B’s are important and should be encouraged.Questions:Beside inherence, personality is also deeply effected by ______________________. 2. The frame can be one of many different shapes and is attached to a long string held in the hand or wound on a drum. Kites have a long history of practical application and many different types of kite have been debeloped to serve various purpos es.The ancient Chinese used bird-kites to carry ropes across rivers and valle ys. The current folding kite which will dive excitingly is an improved typ e of such a kite. With its long flat body and single pair of bird-like wings,i t looks just like a large bird in the air. The modern version is usually mad e of tissue-paper rather than the traditional silk.Man-lifting kites were developed in ancient times, again by the Chinese, f or getting information from walled cities and army camps. In fact , as rec ently as world 2 ,German U-boats flew kites from their towers to lift peop le into the air to watch the land. These kites ,which are no longer in existe nce, were made of light-weight cloth. They were much larger and stronger than the Chinese ones. Their design, however, was simply that of the cutte r kite. Smaller in size, this type of kite is still very popular as a toy for chil dren, being easy to make with a diamond-shaped frame,no wings and bro wn-paper covering.Box-kites are another type of kite found in toy shops today. The first box-kite,named for its box-like body, was developed in the nineteenth century t o test theories of flight and this type of cotton-covered kite greatly assiste d the success of early aeroplane. These kites are the ancestors of a heavier version of the box-kite,which consists of two main sections, placed side b y side. Developed for the peacetime purpose of fishing in strong sea wind ,it is the only modern kite described which has practical value . "But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts, but manage t o fool themseelves about the risks they're taking by using excuses: "Every one else does it," "I'm not hurting anyone," or "I really need this grade." E xcuses can get very elaborate: "I know I'm looking at another's exam, eve n though I'm supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that's not c heating because I'm just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions, and avoid excuses. If we fool ourselves into beli eving we're not doing anything wrong, we can't see the real choice we're making--and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask ho w you would feel if your actions were public, and anyone could be watchi ng over your shoulder. Would you feel proud or ashamed of your actions? If you'd rather hide your actions, that's a good indication that you're takin g a risk and rationalizing it to yourself. Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the conseque nces, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and t o others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usua lly focus on immediate benefits ("what's in it for me"), and simply haven't considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting ca ught are serious, and may include a "0" on a test or assignment; an "F" in the class; Suspension or Dismissal from school; transcript notation; and a tarnished reputation. In fact, when you break a rule or law, you lose contr ol over your life, and give others the power to impose punishment: you ha ve no control over what that punishment might be. This is an extremely pr ecarious and vulnerable position. There may be some matters of life and d eath, or highest principle, which might justify such a risk, but there aren't many things that fall in this category.Getting Away With It--Or NotThose who don't get caught pay an even hig her price. A cheater doesn't learn from the test, depriving him/herself of a n education. Cheating underminesconfidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that with out dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-esteem a nd integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty, and afraid of getting cau ght. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn't get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks lead s only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences. Students have beendismissed from school because they didn't get this simple message: Hone sty is the ONLY policy that works.Cheating Hurts Others, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don't count" and don't rea lly hurt anyone. But individual choices have a profound cumulative effect . Cheating can spread like a disease, and a cheater can encourage others j ust by being seen from across the room. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hu rts others'grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and o thers may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don't cheat, I can't compete with those who do.") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The r eal reward of good teaching is seeing students learn, but a cheater says, "I' m not interested in what you're trying to teach; all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is a blatant and destructive attack on the quality of youreducation. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the University, and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MattersIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. We must rely o n the honesty and good faith of others every day. If not, we couldn't put m oney in the bank, buy food, clothing, ormedicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dent ist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is c aused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can ha ve. The savings and loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindle s, and, of course, Watergate, have undermined the faith of many America ns in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whol e. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation's economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for edu cation. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community , and our society. Our actions do matter.
