The fields, hills and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground whose adventures were only limited by my imagination.I can remember once hiking to nearby lake and walking slowly around it. At the back of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tyre tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ears “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn and walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scare d. I didn’t want to end up being trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on the earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love! May you always help your fellow travelers along the way! B.All Roads Lead Home.C.Every Effort Is Worthwhile. D.Be Brave to AdventureDBats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.Last week, the group of scientists said they had discovered important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体). The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒),which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging. The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived an average of 37 years. The scientists said it had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, r eaching 41 years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expectedto live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rat.32. What decides bats’ aging process according to the text? .A. The body size of the batB. The type of chromosomesC. 第I卷(选择题)一、阅读理解For World Heritage(遗产) Sites, you probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, and historical buildings. But there are a few of the more unusual sites..Citadel of Haiti. These monuments were built at the end of the nineteenth century when Haiti became independent and the many thousands of black slaves in Haiti were free for the first time. These ex-slaves built the monuments, which The World Heritage List (WHL) describes as a true symbol of liberty..The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India. This railway was opened in 1881 and is still operating today. It crosses a difficult area of mountain landscape and it is a great example of railway engineering. The WHL says that it is the first and still the most outstanding example of a hill passenger railway..Borders of France and Spain. This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological shapes. Besides, people there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times. The WHL says it shows us about past European society through its landscape of villages, fields and mountain roads..Alto Douro, Portugal. This is an area in the North of Portugal where wine has been produced for thousands of years. Nowadays it is world-famous for the port wine that is produced there. The WHL says that this long tradition of wine making has produced a cultural landscape of outstanding beauty that reflects its technological, social and economic development little by little.1.In the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India, you can __________________.A.experience the mountain railway B.enjoy the natural mountain beautyC.explore the railway engineering D.learn the history of the railway2.Which of the following is in honor of freedom?A.The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India B.Borders of France and SpainC.Citadel of Haiti D.Alto Douro, Portugal3.If you want to learn something about ancient farming, you should go to ___________.A.Alto Douro, Portugal B.Borders of France and SpainC.Citadel of Haiti D.The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in IndiaPhillip Island is a small island and nature reserve off the coast of South Australia, about 140 km from Melbourne. On the island you can see koalas, kangaroos and the main attraction, the Penguin Parade(归巢)on Summerland Beach. As dusk was approaching, we made our way down to the beach, as did everyone else. On the beach was a stone grandstand, rather cold on the behind, so bring a coat or blanket to sit on. As it got darker, people talked less, keeping an eye out on the beach to see the arrival of that first penguin.Suddenly there was movement at the edge of the surf and all heads turned as one. There, standing by the edge of the water was the smallest penguin we had ever seen. He looked left, then right, as if he was considering crossing a busy road and then he ran quickly across to the sand dunes and the penguin holes. He must have been the scout(侦查员), because after him, there came groups of penguins, some consisted of two or three penguins, and some had about ten or fifteen, but they all made the same mad dash across the sand into the holes, as if they couldn't get there fast enough. The groups started to lessen and finally no more penguins emerged from the sea.We sat on the grandstand for a while, not talking, just feeling awed(敬畏的) at what we'd just seen. Neither of us had ever seen penguins in the wild before, only in zoos and it was an amazing feeling. You could see the penguins here every evening and morning, but they weren't in cages or in small pools. The sea was their playground and it is a sight we would definitely recommend to anyone. You weren't allowed to take flash photographs as it scared them. After the penguins had gone to their holes, you could walk along boardwalks and see them there. That's got to be worth a look.4.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The main attraction on Phillip Island.B.The Penguin Parade on Summerland Beach.C.The beautiful scenery on Phillip Island.D.How to protect the penguins on Phillip Island.5.Which of the following shows the right order of the Penguin Parade?a. At the same time the other half group carried out the same type of water activities, but with the absence of dolphins. Researchers want to find out the influence of water and the natural setting. All the study volunteers didn’t continue to take any drugs or psychotherapy ( 心理治疗) at least for weeks before the start of the study and did not take any drugs during the study, said the researchers from the division of clinical Psychiatry at t e the University of Leicester Medical School.By the end of the study, those people who swam with the dolphins had a greater average reduction in their depressive symptoms than those who did not.The researchers noted that the study supports the theory of biophilia, which thinks that human health and well-being depends partly on the human connection with the natural world. The findings appeared in the issue of the British Medical Journal.Coming from the Greek, biophilia means “love of life”, and it has been developed by biologists to reflect the humans’ natural tendency to connect with nature and animals, leading to interactions and positive emotions that result in psychological treatment.8.Why didn’t the volunteers take drugs before and during the study?A.Because the drugs had no effect at all.B.Because they didn’t want to take drugs.C.Because the result of study might be affected.D.Because they wanted to make the study easier.9.What can we infer from the text?A.We should often swim with dolphins.B.Nature and animals are important to human beings.C.Dolphins need to be protected by human beings.D.There are no effective drugs to treat depression.10.Which of the following statements about biophilia is TRUE?A.The English word means “love of life”.B.The biologists understand it in a new way.C.Actually we don’t use the word any longer.D.It’s a new way to swim with dolphins.11.What’s the main idea of the text?A.Swimming with dolphins can treat depression.B.Patients with depression like swimming with dolphins.C.What’s the relationship between dolphins and people?D.Dolphins are smarter than other animals.Hip-hop culture covers many fields; it includes spoken words, break-dancing, beat-making, painting, fashion, lively design, technology, and more. Hip-hop is becoming the unofficial music in the education world, as more artists launch school programs, summer camps, and other activities connected city youth in the classroom through the beliefs of hip-hop culture. Even more and more university teachers — who once would have been strongly against hip-hop — have joined thecrew. In the past two decades, hip-hop culture, including hip-hop education, has become a legitimate(合法的) field of study in universities and the subject of numerous books.Hip-hop culture has influenced every piece of American and global culture because the culture is so prevalent. Teachers must be willing to engage in it if it's part of the unique reality of their students' lives. That way, teachers can truly be effective, reaching students in a meaningful, culturally connected way.Teachers might at first feel frightened by hip-hop culture, an area in which they might not have previous knowledge or experience. But a lack of knowledge is actually a blessing; the best trained hip-hop educators have been those that are at the beginning disconnected(分离的) from the culture. One of the biggest sayings in hip-hop is “keep it real”. If a teacher comes to the classroom and says, “I don' t know hip-hop, but I recognize that it's your culture and I want to learn,” the kids will teach the teacher, and then the students will be more willing to learn from that educator. Hip-hop is about a respect for youth culture.12.Those who once most probably disagree with hip-hop education are ___________.A.middle school teachers B.unofficial artistsC.the young living in cities D.university teachers13.The underlined word “prevalent” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ____________.A.familiar B.similarC.popular D.regular14.The author finds teachers’ lacking in hip-hop culture might be beneficial because _________.A.students will frighten teachers at schoolB.teachers can learn from students in the fieldC.teachers will connected the culture with lessonsD.teachers’ knowledge or experience will be enriched15.Who would the young like to learn from?A.Those who respect their culture.B.Those who are interested in music.C.Those who keep their character real.D.Those who are willing to learn from others.二、七选五To Live Truly in TodayHere are some suggestions on how we should truly live in today. 16.. AOn the evening of June 21, 1992, a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes entered the beautiful hall of the Bell Tower Hotel in Xi’an with his bicycle. The hotel workers received him and telephoned the manager, for they had never seen a bicycle in the hotel ball before though they lived in “the kingdom of bicycles.”Robert Friedla nder, an American, arrived in Xi’an on his bicycle trip across Asia which started last December in New Delhi, India. When he was 11, he read the book Marco Polo and made up his mind to visit the Silk Road. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?5. It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that ______.A. are lying on the groundB. have an unpleasant tasteC. bees don’t likeD. have an unfamiliar shape6. In each show, popular stars are given zoo-keeping tasks that allow them to interact with wild animals in order to bring humans and animals closer together.Animal welfare advocates(倡导者) say that is exactly what should be avoided. Dave Neale of Animals Asia (an advocacy group) said, “It is hugely misleading to the public about the needs and welfare of captive animals (圈养动物) and putting the animals’ welfare and health at risk.”“What they don’t realize is that wild animals need space,” said Xie Yan, a zo ologist and China director of the Wildlife Conservation Society. “Putting clothes on chimpanzees is not as adorable as you may think from the animals’ point of view.I guess their idea was to get their viewers to love and protect the animals,” Ms. Xie adde d, “but we do not agree with this approach for entertainment.”Using famous people to focus public attention on wildlife is a common practice in conservation campaigns. The Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming went to Africa and highlighted the problem of elephant and rhinoceros poaching (偷猎) in the documentary “The End of the Wild”. “But differently, he, as a human observer, kept his distance and was there to see the hard truth of poaching, and that is different from a show created to attract viewers.” Ms Xi e said.Critics (评论家)also argue that the show violates (违反) Chinese wildlife protection laws.4. A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discover ed that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study,by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powdermade from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious thanthose fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study publishedin The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and causedthe mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows’ milk harvested at different timehas not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggestedto those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax. Milk is also sugar-freeand additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.12.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk_________.A. started sleep more easilyB. were less activeC. were more anxiousD. sleep longer13.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?A. D.Murphys Point Provincial Park.3.In which section of a newspaper can you probably find this passage?A.Health. B.Science C.Education. D. Travel.BMy motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem. I thought. So I put Roald dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen. We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip.I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I'm beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.4.Why did the author start reading in the car?A.She wanted to have a better journey.B.She wanted to keep a family traditionC.Her children were addicted to music.D.She wanted to kill the time.5.How did the children react after the author read a few lines?A.They soon settled down. B.They hid themselves.C.They kept quarrelling. D.They continued to fight in their seats. 6.What can we learn about the author and her family’s trip to the beach?A.They had a good time on the beach.B.They enjoyed reading on the road.C.They were caught in a storm.D.They thought it had passed too quickly.7.Which can be the best title for the text?A.Better Reading than Traveling B.Books that Changed My ChildrenC.Road Trips Full of Challenges D.Reading Makes Great Road TripsCPinocchio may be just a children’s fairy tale, but Spanish scientists at the University of Granada recently investigated this so-called “Pinocchio effect” and found that our noses don’t grow when we tell a lie, but actually shrink a bit.Dr. Gómez Milán and his team developed a lie detector test that used thermography (温度记录法)to tell if people were lying, and found that whenever participants in their research were being untruthful, the temperature of the tip of their nose dropped up to 1.2℃, while the temperature of their forehead increased up to 1.5℃. Scientist also found that drop in temperature at nose level actually caused it to slightly shrink, although the difference is undetected by the human eye.“One has to think in order to lie, which rises the temperature of the forehead,” Dr. Gómez Milán explained the findings. “At the same time we feel anxious, which lowers the temperature of the nose.”For this study, researchers asked a number of 60 students to perform various tasks while their temperature is scanned by thermal imaging (热成像)technology. One of these tasksrequired making a 3 to 4 minutes call to their parents or a friend and telling a significant lie. Participants had to make up the lie themselves during the call. Interestingly, this lie detector picked up the “Pinocchio effect” temperature difference in 80 percent of the test subjects, which is a better rate of success than that of any modern lie detector.“With this method we have achieved to increase accuracy”, said Dr. Gómez Milán, who added that law enforcement interviewers could one day combine other lie detection technology with thermal imaging to achieve better results.8.Why does the writer talk about Pinocchio in the first paragraph?A.To tell a fairy tale. B.To give an example.C.To talk about a scientist. D.To introduce the topic.9.What is “Pinocchio effect”?A.Our noses will shrink when we tell a lie.B.Our noses will grow when we tell a lie.C.The temperature of the forehead falls if we lie.D.The temperature of the student rises for anxiety.10.How did Dr. Gómez Milán feel about the lie detector?A.Confident. B.Surprised.C.Doubtful D.Puzzled..11.What lesson can we learn from the text?A.A lie will travel very hard. B.Truth is better than lie.C. Many ways to bring a liar to light. D.Once a liar always a liar.DOne in five women and one in eight men are becoming more tired and less productive, according to a new Australian study on mobile phone use.Led by the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, researchers surveyed 709 mobile phone users across the country aged 18 to 83 and asked them a series of questions based on a similar study 13 years ago. Identifying a phenomenon "technoference (科技干扰)", researchers discovered a significant increase in people blaming their devices for losing sleep, becoming less productive and even getting more aches and pains".According to the study's lead author Dr Oscar, the issue is so bad that 24 percent ofwomen and 15 percent of men are now considered to be " problematic mobile phone users". "When we talk about technoference, we're referring to the everyday intrusions (侵入)and interruptions that people experience due to mobile phones and their usage," he said. "Our survey found technoference had increased among men and women. For example, self-reports relating to the loss of sleep and productivity showed that these negative outcomes had significantly increased during the last 13 years. This finding suggests that mobile phones are potentially increasingly affecting aspects of daytime functioning due to lack of sleep. "Compared to a 2005 study, "technoference" issues for 18 to 24-year-old experienced a surprising 40. 9 percent rise, while those aged 25 to 29 also recorded a dramatic increase of 23. 5 percent.Oscar said that with the number of smartphone users around the world expected to surpass 2. 5 billion before the end of this year, the problem of "technoference" could get even worse. "The speed and depth of smartphone take-up makes our population particularly vulnerable to some of the negative consequences of high mobile phone use." he said. "Rapid technological innovations have led to dramatic changes in today's mobile phone technology, which can improve the quality of life for phone users but also result in some negative outcomes. "12.How are people affected by technoference according to the text?A.It makes people addicted to communicating online.B.It causes people to sleep less at night.C.It pushes people to work at a fast pace.D.It brings negative outcomes to people of all ages.13.Which group are most influenced by smartphones?A.Children. B.Young manC.Young women. D.Seniors.14.What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Easily hurt. B.Widely spread.C.Deeply devoted D.Absolutely accustomed.15.What does the text mainly talk about?A.The increasing side effects of smartphones.B.Ways to solve technoference problem.C.Smartphones and people's happiness.D.The popularity of smartphones.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

D.Juliette Brull.BI've been really lucky this year. Not only did I have the opportunity to live in France, but I was able to see some other countries with my girlfriend. Now she is studying in Essen,a large city in Western Germany. I recently went to stay with her—it was my first visit to Germany!Essen is a very large city. It has all the conveniences of any large city so I felt immediately at home. I loved the variety of shops, restaurants, shopping malls, cocktail bars, nightclubs, parks and even a lake. There is also a citywide network of trams, which makes getting around a piece of cake!I found the people to be really friendly, and most Germans speak very good English which made life easy for me. I was surprised by the casual attitude to alcohol in Germany, where it seems normal for people to drink beer on the street,or on the tram. My girlfriend and I visited two famous local cities,Düsseldorf and Cologne, whichare both on the Rhine River. Düsseldorf is an urban metropolis with a great variety of restaurants. We took a boat tour on the river and went up the Rhine Tower,a really tall building which offers great views across the city. Cologne,as you might know,is world-famous for its perfumes. The cathedral there is an unmissable landmark. We made the effort to climb to the top of one of the cathedral's towers. The spiral (螺旋的) stairs seemed endless, but it was worthwhile for the impressive sights from the top.We also went in a cable car over the river and tasted a German delicacy called “Spaghettieis” which is ice cream with strawberry sauce!I also got to try the famous German sausage. I must admit,I really enjoyed the food! The only disappointment was the grey and rainy weather, which proves that Britain does not have the worst weather in Europe!24.Why did the writer feel lucky this year?A.He will have a chance to live in Germany.B.He met his girlfriend in France by chance.C.He got an opportunity of learning in Germany.D.He was able to live in France and visit other countries.25.What do Düsseldorf and Cologne have in common?A.They are both famous for unique perfumes.B.They both serve traditional German sausage.C.They both have many towers with a long history.D.They both offer wonderful views from the tower top.26.According to the writer, which country has the worst weather in Europe?A.Britain. B.Germany. C.France. D.Italy.27.What can be the best title of the passage?A.An unforgettable trip B.A guide to GermanyC.My first visit to Germany D.A brief introduction of GermanyCAre you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or,in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day.The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers don't follow it!
