Teaching plan for Week 9
Group Discussion & Case Study
The activity is based on the following principles:
1.Tell me, I forget; show me, I remember; involve me, I learn.
2.If you exchange an apple with someone, you get an apple, but if you exchange an idea with
someone, you get two ideas.
Objectives:
Through group discussion and case studies, students will be able to:
1.attach importance to intercultural communication;
2.understand cultural differences and learn to appreciate them;
3.explain why different lands have different friendships;
4.develop cultural awareness through case studies;
Procedures:
1.The class will be divided into small groups of 6 or 7 students based on the class number and
the seat arrangement.
2.Each group will select a chairperson and a stenographer.
3.The teacher offers the students questions for discussion and case studies in advance so that
they can get prepared before class.
4.Each student will have his or her opinion heard during the discussion and the peers can argue
if they don’t a gree with him or her.
5.Each group will single out two students to give presentation next week.
Questions for Discussion:
1.Have you ever found cultural differences in addressing, greeting, complimenting, apologizing,
and leave-taking between China and English-speaking countries? Please provide as much information as you can.
2.What’s the cultural clash between the Chinese and Americans in the film Gua Sha Treatment?
Anything we could do to bridge the gap?
3.What are similarities and differences between the Chinese concept of friendship and the
western ones ( for example, the American, the French or the English)? (Textbook P.81, No.6) 4.After reading the story The Present, could you explain why the old lady felt so hurt when she
got the cheque from her daughter? What would you do if you were the old lady?
