This is the allure of the paper book, a treasure trove of stories waiting to unfold. Now, let's not get carried away with the nostalgia. There's a practical side to this too. 呼吁同学重拾对纸质阅读的兴趣英语小作文In today's digital age, where screens and electronic devices have become an integral part of our daily lives, it is easy to overlook the timeless pleasure and profound benefits of reading physical books. As students, we are often bombarded with a constant stream of information and stimuli from our smartphones, laptops, and tablets, making it increasingly challenging to carve out dedicated time for the immersive experience of reading a printed book. However, I firmly believe that rediscovering the joy of paper-based reading can have a profound and lasting impact on our intellectual and personal growth. One of the primary advantages of reading physical books is the deeper level of engagement and focus it fosters. When we hold a book in our hands, we are not distracted by the constant notifications, pop-ups, and temptations to multitask that are inherent in the digital world. The act of turning pages, feeling the texture of the paper, and physically immersing ourselves in the narrative or information presented allows for a more concentrated and mindful reading experience. This enhanced focus has beenshown to improve comprehension, retention, and the ability to critically analyze and engage with the content. Moreover, reading physical books can have a profound impact on our cognitive and creative development. Studies have demonstrated that the tactile experience of holding a book and the spatial awareness of navigating through its pages can stimulate different parts of the brain, leading to enhanced memory formation, problem-solving skills, and even imagination. The ability to physically annotate, highlight, and make notes in the margins of a book can also foster a deeper level of engagement and active learning, as opposed to the more passive experience of reading on a screen.Furthermore, the act of reading physical books can have a calming and restorative effect on our mental well-being. In a world that is increasingly dominated by the constant stimulation and distractions of digital media, the simple pleasure of curling up with a good book can provide a much-needed respite and opportunity for introspection and relaxation. The absence of the blue light emitted by electronic devices, which can disrupt our sleep patterns and contribute to eye strain, further enhances the therapeutic benefits of reading physical books.Beyond the individual benefits, the preservation of physical books and the reading culture they represent is also crucial for the broaderintellectual and cultural landscape. Physical books serve as tangible repositories of knowledge, history, and human creativity, providing a tactile connection to the ideas and perspectives of past and present thinkers, writers, and artists. The act of collecting, organizing, and preserving physical books in libraries, bookstores, and personal collections not only supports the livelihood of authors and publishers but also fosters a sense of community and shared appreciation for the written word.In contrast, the predominance of digital media and the gradual decline of physical book reading can lead to a loss of this rich cultural heritage and the unique sensory experiences that come with it. As students, we have a responsibility to safeguard and revitalize the tradition of physical book reading, ensuring that it remains a vibrant and accessible part of our educational and personal lives. To this end, I would like to encourage my fellow students to make a conscious effort to rediscover the joys of reading physical books. This can be as simple as setting aside dedicated time each day to read a printed book, rather than defaulting to scrolling through social media or binge-watching on a screen. Explore the local library or bookstore, and indulge in the tactile pleasure of browsing through shelves filled with diverse titles and genres. Engage in book clubs or discussions with friends and classmates, where you can share your insights and experiences with physical books. Moreover, consider the environmental and sustainability benefits of choosing physical books over their digital counterparts. The production and distribution of physical books, while not without its own environmental impact, can be more sustainable than the energy-intensive and resource-dependent nature of digital media and electronic devices. In conclusion, the call to rediscover the joy of reading physical books is not merely a nostalgic yearning for the past but a vital investment in our intellectual, emotional, and cultural well-being. As students, we have the power to shape the future of reading and preserve the timeless traditions that have enriched the human experience for generations. By embracing the unique sensory and cognitive benefits of physical books, we can cultivate a deeper appreciation for the written word, foster a more engaged and contemplative learning environment, and contribute to the ongoing preservation of our shared cultural heritage.。

Ambassador for Young Spreads a Love of Books (MUSIC)DOUG LOHSON: Welcome to AMERICAN MOSAIC in VOA Special English. (MUSIC)DOUG LOHSON: I'm Doug Johnson. This week on our program we listen to music from superstar Whitney Houston. And answer a question about the Old Believers religious group. But first, we meet a new ambassador in Washington whose wants to spread the message that reading is fun.(MUSIC)DOUG LOHSON: If you are over the age of thirty you may not have heard of Katherine Paterson. But if you are under that age chances are good that you have. In fact, you might have read one of her many award-winning books. Or maybe you saw the movie version of her book, "Bridge to Terabithia." Now, the United States government has awarded Katherine Paterson a new job. Mario Ritter has more.MARIO RITTER: Earlier this month, the United States Library of Congress named Katherine Paterson the national ambassador for young people's literature. She is only the second person to hold the position. She replaces writer Jon Scieszka, who had served since two thousand eight. The librarian of Congress, James Billington, said Miz Paterson "represents the finest in literature for young people." He spoke of national as well as international praise for her writing. Mister Billington said she would speak to the importance of reading in the lives of America's young people.Miz Paterson has written more than thirty books. She is among only five writers to have won two Newbery Medals. These are among the most important children's book awards in the United States. "Bridge to Terabithia" won a Newbery Medal in nineteen seventy-seven. Her book "Jacob Have I Loved" won the award in nineteen eighty-one.Katherine Paterson's books for children are often quite complex. "Bridge to Terabithia" includes adult themes like depression and death. The book has caused debate because of its place on school library bookshelves. Some parents think it is too adult for young children. Miz Paterson says the idea for the book came from a real life experience. Her son's best friend died innineteen seventy-four when she was struck by lightning.Katherine Paterson is seventy-seven. She began writing as a young mother with three children. But she says her interest in writing came as a surprise. As a child she had thought about becoming a Christian religious worker in foreign countries like her parents were.Katherine Paterson spoke to a gathering of children when she was named ambassador on January fifth in Washington. She said: "Read for your life. Read for your life as a member of a family, as a part of a community, as a citizen of this country and a citizen of the world."(MUSIC)DOUG LOHSON: Our question this week comes from Russia. Aleksey wants to know about the Russian community of Old Believers in the American state of Oregon.Old Believers is the name used to describe millions of people who rejected reforms to the Russian Orthodox Church in the sixteen hundreds. Old Believers who chose not to accept the reforms were often mistreated or killed. Over time, millions fled Russia. Many fled to Asia, Australia, South America and Europe. Many others came to the United States. There are large communities of Old Believers in the states of Pennsylvania, Alaska and Oregon. In fact, Oregon has the largest population of Old Believers in the United States. More than ten thousand live in that state. Many continue to follow their old traditions and customs. Women wear coverings on their heads and long dresses, tied at the waist. Men are not permitted to shave the hair from their faces.Old Believers follow special rules governing what they can and cannot eat on different days of the year. For example, they may not be permitted to eat things like dairy products, meat, fish or eggs, or drink alcohol. They also cannot eat off of the same dish that a non-believer has eaten off of. Because of this, many eat at fast food restaurants that serve food in containers that can be thrown away.Old Believers observe forty religious holidays each year. On these days they are not permitted to go to work or attend school. In Oregon many Old Believers have their own businesses or farms. But a growing number of them work in jobs in the city, especially at furniture factories and sewing companies. Many Old Believers live in small, private and somewhat closed communities. But the modern world is having an effect. Modern technology is entering their communities. Many Old Believers watch television and drive cars. And many, especially the young, are reportedly having a harder time trying to hold on to their spiritual and cultural traditions.(MUSIC)DOUG LOHSON: Whitney Houston's recent album "I Look to You" marked her long awaited return to the music industry. It opened at the number one position in the United States and Canada. It also appeared in top positions in Australia and five European countries.
