⼤学演讲稿当苏格拉底遇上孔⼦When Socrates Meets Confucius——When the western education meets the eastern educationGood evening, ladies and gentlemen,Today my topic is When Socrates Meets Confucius——when the western education meets the eastern education. Maybe many people would be surprised by this topic. When Socrates was born, Confucius had passed away for 10 years, and they lived in different countries and there were no planes at that time. How can they meet?! But today let’s suppose they meet each other. When Socrates meets Confucius, maybe he would say: “Hi, Confucius!” And Confucius would make a Chinese fist and palm salute and answer “nice to meet you, Mr. Socrates!” And then they will discuss many questions. At last, Confucius would say:“Mr. Socrates, you can be my teacher.” Because Confucius always insisted that “three-line, must be my teacher”. And Socrates would answer it by his well-known saying: “I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance.”Of course, it’s just a joke. Socrates and Confucius were both the best and most famous educators in the ancient. Confucius’educational thoughts had a very deep influence on Chinese education, and Socrates deeply affected the western education as well. So when Socrates meets Confucius, I think it’s the western education meeting the eastern education. The western education and the eastern education have many differences, but they both have many good things at the same time. I think the western education and the eastern education could learn from each other to create better educational methods.Yes, there’s already some communication between the western education and the eastern education, and it has promoted educational development. But I think it is still not enough. We need more communication.Education is the guider of culture. The western education leads the western culture and the eastern education leads the eastern culture. So, if we fuse the western education and the eastern education together, it would be a kind of new education, and it will create a new world culture and make our world more harmonious. When Socrates meets Confucius, when the western education meets the eastern education and be fused together, it would become t he Socrates and Confucius’ Education——let’s call it as the New World Education! I believe this New World Education will make our world better and better! So, let’s make Socrates meet Confucius!。

Today I'm going to talk about two great thinkers. Socrates and Confucius. two men with great minds. Both English and Chinese have a saying about great minds,"Great minds think alike" and "英雄所见略同."Then do Socrates and Confucius think alike?I will try to compare the two great minds interms of their lives.thoughts and influence. Now let's get started. Both Socrates and Confucius seemed to lead a meaningful and colorful life. As a young man, Socrates had been a brave soldier fighting in a war. Confucius'early life seemed to be equally difficult, since he had to earn his living at menial tasks. After that, it seems that Socrates and Confucius followed different ways in their lives. In middle age.Socrates did nothing but ask people questions in the marketplace. By contrast, Confucius tried all possible ways to achieve his dream. For example, he had been a teacher.gathering young men to study his doctrines. He was also given an office in the government, although he did not have real power. When he saw that he could accomplish nothing.he resigned his post and set off on travels to advocate his Way in other states. After that, he resumed his teaching. Socrates and Confucius spent their lives in different ways.because they had different pursuits. Socrates spent his whole life pursuing wisdom by asking questions. For Socrates, wisdom meant understanding the true nature of our existence, including the limits of what we can know. He declared that if we do not think about what we are doing, then life is not worth living. Therefore. he kept asking questions to himself and to others. By doing this, he helped people understand such concepts as moral and courage and realize what they knew and what they didn't. Socrates would die rather than give up his pursuit of wisdom and truth.Confucius, however, pursued common welfare, that is, the well-being of all the common people. During his times, the common people lived a miserable and tragic life. Confucius could not tolerate these conditions and resolved to devote his life to trying to right them. According to Confucius, in a natural and normal stateof society men should Confucius and the rulers should aim to bring about the welfare and happiness of all the common people. As I have mentioned,he tried all possible methods to achieve this goal. He taught young men to promote his doctrines; he worked in the government to put his teachings into practice;he also travelled around many states to find a ruler who would use his Way.Socrates and Confucius pursued different things, but both had great influence. Socrates laid the foundation of Western philosophy. With him the subject really took off. However.the two thinkers have influenced the Western tradition and the Chinese tradition in different ways. Following Socrates'pursuit of truth and wisdom. Western thinkers seemed to be more interested in studying the physical world. After Confucius, Chinese thinkers paid more attention to interpersonal relationships. Then, do great minds think alike? Well, they may have different pursuits, but they have the same devotion to their pursuits. That is what I have learned about Socrates and Confucius.
whenconfuciusmeetssocrates5篇范文第一篇:when confucius meets socratesWhen Socrates meets ConfuciusDuring the 5th and 6th Centuries B.C, two great thinkers, Socrates and Confucius, sprang successively from Greece in the West and from China in the Orient. They have respectively exercised influence over the civilizations of the east and west so deeply and widely that they have been revered as “sage” or “saint” by later generations. However, none of them ever heard of a piece of news of the existence of another.A curious mind might wonder what would happen if the two masters had had a chance to meet each other, say, when one day they were strolling with some of their disciples along the bank of a river. They should have a great deal to say to each other. The two great people both lived in historical periods marked by tremendous social changes: frequent wars, political disturbances, ideological confusion and conflict, and demoralization.Confronted with political and social crises, they both sought moral principles as a basis for understanding those crises and for mending the social fabric. And they indeed eventuall y find or establish an ultimate “principle” or “reason” for human life, esp.for moral actions through their approaches. The historical Socrates or Socrates of the early Platonic dialogues focused his attention on how to live in this world instead of speculating extensively about nature, the gods, or the character of any existence people might have after death. He held that people were endowed by the Gods with intelligent souls that desire the good and one must consciously devote oneself to the understanding o f one’s moral nature and to the purification of one’s soul. This activity is of primeimportance in one’s life.In regard to human nature, Confucius said, ”by nature, near together;by practice, far apart”.He thought that at birth people had nearly the same nature;the great differences in morality were caused by practice. He held that the pursuit of morality is more important than that of the physical necessities of life. And in his whole life he had been dedicating himself to the search for “the human-way” as w ell as trying hard to implement this way in his own time. The essence of “the human-way” was Ren, with kindness and affection as its core. Now you might think the two great thinkers will shake hands on such similarities between their own ethics. However, the so-called “moral reason” that Socrates finds or establishes does not equal to what Confucius finds or establishes.“Virtue is knowledge” is the famous proposition at the core of Socrates’ viewpoint on morality. He held that the ultimate principle of moral life lies in nothing other than rational knowledge in human mind. The notorious Socratic paradox is that all wickedness is involuntary and due to ignorance. For him, only under the direction of wisdom could human nature achieve the several virtues. On the contrary, we cannot find a definition of virtue in Confucius’ discourses like we can in the Platonic Socrates’.But we can see his general concern with moral issues and according to him, the ultimate principle of moral life lies in nothing other than consanguineous affection in human heart.Morality is more effective than is law in securing and maintaining stability and harmony in a society. With similarities and differences lying in their thoughts, the ethics of Confucius’ and Socrates’ have been treasures of world culture and their influences have lasted until today. If the two meet each other today in a world that enjoys a thriving prosperity as well as severe challenges posed bytremendous advances in science and technology and by related social changes, they may rethink traditional assumptions and to learn from one another’s traditions.Only in this way can people in both East and West lead to live an abundant, noble and spiritual life.。
关于苏格拉底和孔子的英语作文English:Socrates and Confucius, though belonging to different cultural contexts and historical periods, share significant similarities in their philosophical outlooks and approaches to moral education. Both thinkers prioritized the cultivation of virtue and wisdom as essential components of a flourishing life. Socrates, in ancient Greece, emphasized the pursuit of knowledge through questioning and dialogue, famously asserting that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Similarly, Confucius, in ancient China, underscored the importance of self-reflection and learning from others, advocating for the rectification of names and the cultivation of ren, or benevolence, as foundational to ethical conduct. Moreover, both Socrates and Confucius challenged conventional wisdom and societal norms, seeking to guide individuals towards a deeper understanding of themselves and their responsibilities within their respective communities. Despite their differences in cultural background and specific philosophical doctrines, the enduring legacy of Socrates and Confucius lies in their shared commitment to the pursuit of wisdomand moral excellence as pathways to a more just and harmonious society.中文翻译:苏格拉底和孔子虽然属于不同的文化背景和历史时期,但在哲学观念和道德教育方面有着显著的相似之处。
当我想起孔子英文作文英文,When I think of Confucius, the first word that comes to mind is wisdom. Confucius was a philosopher and teacher who lived in ancient China. He is known for his teachings on morality, ethics, and social relationships. His ideas have had a profound impact on Chinese culture and continue to influence people all over the world. One of Confucius' most famous teachings is the concept of the "Analects". These are a collection of sayings and ideas that Confucius wrote down during his lifetime. They cover a wide range of topics, from personal relationships to politics and governance. The Analects are still studied today as a guide for living a virtuous life.Another important aspect of Confucius' teachings is the idea of filial piety. This refers to the respect and reverence that children should have for their parents and elders. Confucius believed that this was the foundation of a harmonious society, and that by practicing filial piety, individuals could cultivate their own moral character.中文,当我想起孔子时,我首先想到的是智慧。
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. When Socrates meets Confucius, it is not only a feast of ideas exchanged, but the eastern and western cultural collision and fution.Confucius was considered as the greatest saint in the east. In the west, Confucius also enjoyed great reputation in education, politics, ethics and so on .They are the symbols of human civilization all the time.In terms of education, I think that both of the cultural celebrities will criticize what students received today in China. Actually, students' ultimate goal is to pass examinations with the highest marks and be admitted to the best university in future. To make things worse, they forget the true meaning of education, they lose the ability of learning. Socrates once said,' A man is never too old to learn.’and Confucius was learning all over his life journey. They are right. Now when we look into the western educational system, we can find that they pay more attention to kids' creativity and imagination. In their eyes, mark doesn't mean everything. One's own ability is the most important. When Socrates meets Confucius, they may try to combine advantages on both sides to make for the world's educational career. With the development of globalization, peace and development is the timeless issue in this world. The cultural communication between countries is becoming more and more popular. Recently China has set up many Confucius Institutes all over the world to spread Chinese culture. Foreigners come abroad to study Chinese in China. Although many Chinese go abroad for further education, many people living in China know little about other cultural customs. In ancient times, Confucius travelled to learn from Lao Zi. Socrates was a modest person, as well .When they meet, they will totally support the cultural travel and communication. And I think, travelling is as important as reading in books, exercising while learning different culture all the way, what a wonderful thing! When Socrates meets Confucius , they will do their best to contribute to the western and eastern cultural fution ,and besides help modern people create a more and more beautiful future ! Thank you .。

When Socrates meet with Confucius As we all known, there are two famous philosopher influenced the development of scientific thought in the ancient world. In the East is Confucius, and in the west is Socrates .they were the same age of eastern and Western excellent philosophers, they are pushing the progress of the society with his advanced ideas. In today's world of people still put some of their’s thought as their criterion. Two people have many similarities in the educational thought, of course there will be a different point. People usually regard them as the comparison object. We can imagine, what will happen between them when Socrates met Confucius ? Of course, what they will say is not known, but we can according to their ideas to image. At first ,we talk about their similarities: Socrates is the most famous ancient Greek philosopher and educator. They are at the same time basically. As Confucius, Socrates is a wise philosopher also, but also a be tireless in teaching others educator. Era of Confucius and Socrates' life, east and west are isolated from each other, but two people on the education thought have many striking similarities. In the object of education, two people have advocated "make no social distinctions in teaching", promoted the popularization of education and culture. In the understanding of the function of education, two people are highly affirmed the important value of education, and regarded as the purpose of education is to cultivate the talents of have both ability and political integrity. In education methods, both pay attention to the heuristic teaching, encourage educated to think for themselves, "chalk against direct ready-made conclusion is given.Confucius and Socrates understanding of the value of education, set a good example for future generations of respecting teachers.Confucius and Socrates the ideology of "no child left behind" with broad mind will originally belonged to the nobles education only open to civilians, free of charge for the popularity of theirrespective national education at that time and the spread of culture has played an indelible contribution.Different points:Because of their different social classes, so they on behalf of the interests of different also.Confucius is the etiquette service for ancient slavery to restore week, Socrates was however in order to save Athens democracy of Athens。
When Socrates And ConfuciusIf the two ancient education masters, Socrates and Confucius meet, there may be a song floating in the air.I don’t wanna know what the future is.All I want is to be here with you.All friendship means no promises. It is but a feeling we all share.Meet is never a lasting thing. But it is in the hearts of us.Your good will be in my memory.I just wish that mine too within yours.Although the difference in language ,they will find a way to overcome. There must be a culture exchange between east and west when Socrates meets Confucius.Confucius advocated the rules, love for man and no child leftbehing. He affected the Chinese culture and development for more than two thousand years.Socrates advocats the mind, and said that”man is the measure of everthing”.It is the origin of western humanism.Of course, because of the difference of eastern and western political and economic environment, the two thinkers of the past communication to the social difference with other, maintaining the interests of the rules, which is essentially depressing human nature, against god stress individual character liberation and individualvalue. In my opinion,on form to the social developmet trend is good ideas.Thinking to judge right and wrong, only through practice.Practice makes the master,if you do your best always, over and over again, you will become a master of transformation.Practice makes the master.By doing your best you become a master.Everything you have ever learned, you learned thourgh repetition. You learned to write,to drive, and even to walk by repetition. You are a master of speeking, because you practiced.A ctions is what makes the difference.。
When Socrates Meet ConfuciusBoth of them stood on the highest spot in education area and the realm of thought in their time.Confucius,a great thinker and educator in the Spring and Autumn Period, the founder of the Confucian School. Socrates(469BC--399BC), one of the most famous educator and philosopher in ancient Greek, they was at almost the same period. The east and west was still separated at their time, but they share so many common points in education and politics. My paper is trying to talk about them from three aspects. PhilosophyConfucius, the most influential philosopher in ancient China, though he claimed only to elaborate the theories of the predecessors and do not have original ideas of his own,he already pioneered a philosophy system which include the concept of natural law, humanities’law, epistemology and methodology before the competition of hundred school. Both they two did not have any work wrote by them own, most of their thoughts and behaviors was recorded by their students. We learn about Socrates’s thoughts most from his student Plato’DIALOGUE which consists of Socrates’s arguments with others, but sometimes we can hard to tell which points are really Socrates’s. Before Socrates, the philosophy in ancient Greek was studying about the origin of the universe, what the world consist of etc.Out of the concern for his country and citizens,he turned to study the human being,i.e,the moral principles, like what is justice or injustice, what is bravery or coward, where the knowledge came from, how to rule a country, what kind of people can rule a country and how to foster them.He opened up a new area for the philosophy study, make it back from the heaven to the man’s word. The Spring and Autumn Period was a time when the idea about nature was experiencing the alteration,Confucius had no explicit idea about the nature of the world, but he did believe in the fate, which is of historical inevitability.About the epistemology, though not put much emphasis on it,Confucius did not give up the idea that people be born with the knowledge, and ranked the intuitive knowledge at a high level. What stands at an important point in his epistemology is the idea that wisdom obtained by studies,he encouraged students to listen and observe in order to get the truth. About the humanities’law,he stood for deny self and return to propriety, benevolence was considered the highest level of spirit for human being.Moderation was the golden mean of the Confucian school, and also the methodology Confucius promoted.Everything should be in a reasonable extent, being just right. The fundamental assertion for Socrates’s philosophy is “know yourself”,he thought people are innocent, and only when they realize it will they get the intelligence. He tried to let people know that they are all imperfect, and only through continually studying, thinking and practicing can they get closer to the perfect. And to achieve this goal, people have to use the nous as the guidance,to unremittingly pursue the truth and judge the truth by their own carrying out.Secondly,he proposed that virtue isknowledge, the moral behaviors have to be based on the knowledge, the sense should be used as the standard to judge the moral behaviors. So he called on people to concern more about their own soul and to find their bounden duty, their goals. PoliticsConfucius was the descendant of the king of Shang dynasty, but was driven out at 3 years old. When he was still young,he had been wanting to join the political area eagerly,so he always thought about the management of the country, when he reached 30,he had made a name for himself. At the age 55,he started the journey travel through all the kingdoms.Though being highly respected,he had seldom be given a post. Finally,he came back to Lu and put all heart in education.Confucius had long lived a poor life.Because the country was rife with the wars, his policy of benevolence was not accepted at that time. The major political ideology of Confucius was rite and benevolence. He thought the governor should rule by virtue, and manage the country by morality, and feudal ethical code is the most gracious statecraft. This strategy made the virtue and rite be applied to the populace, and broke one of the most important boundaries between noble people and the populace at that time. The theory of benevolence shows the humanitarian spirit, and the rite enshrines the principle of the set of etiquette. In modern society, these two ideas are order and institution. He called for the restoration of the system of rites and music adopted in the Western Zhou Dynasty. But he did not think the political system should be unalterable, reversely,it should be reformed according to the changes of the society. The system of rites and music reinforced and stabilized this strict patriarchal clan hierarchy.Consistent with the theory of virtue ruling,Confucius did not regard the corporal punishment as the main way to rule a country. The governor should influence his people, change them by education and persuasion, but rather than the punishment. He also agreed that an open-minded monarch should know how to choose virtuous and talented person,he said if the governor can not make full use of the talented people,he is violating his duties. What’s more,on keeping the unity of the society,Confucius strongly against the huge gap of the distribution of the property between the ruling classes,he said this may result in the instability within the ruling classes. He also claimed that what should be worried about most is the unevenness among the public instead of the poor. Socrates came from a common citizen family in ancient Greek. He looked common and spoke flatly, but possessed holy ideas. He born in a time when all the talented people in ancient Greek gathered in Athens and brought with them the new knowledge and the new trends of free debates. This helped a lot for him to develop his own theory. He assimilated himself to a gadfly, the gift given by the god to the Greek.Around the age 40,he was known far and wide. As his most famous thesis,Virtue is knowledge,he believed the country should be ruled by people who possesses great virtue. This point view share some common points with Confucius’s.In his point of view, the moral nature and the system of the moral value are the foundation of the politic.Owns the good education, people will have well politicalbehaviors, then the whole country can also be stable and well-organized.About the electing of the rulers,he did not agree with the democracy, and even more objected the absolute monarchy. What he proposed for is the sage politics,he held the opinion that every position should be possessed by people who own the specialized ability.Sage politic and ruling the country by virtue are the most similar points between Socrates and Confucius’s theory. Both Socrates and Confucius put much emphasis on the rel life,on the real politics,Socrates claimed the voice of the god in his heart does not allow him to join the political activities. But,facing the perishing of the democracy,he did not evade, and struggled to push through his theories, even after being sentenced to death,he still adhere to his principles, thought keep to the justice, one has to abbey the law,so,he would never shirk the decision of the court. In his political theories, kindness and justice alway occupy an important position.EducationConfucius and Socrates were the earliest educationalist respectively in the east and west history.Their educational thoughts have similarity in teaching approaches, objects.goals and contents.Confucius broke down the monopolize in the education area, and initiated the private school.Confucius was the first one in ancient China to present the idea that people’s talents are similar, the differences are due to the acquired studying and social environments. So he proposed that everybody should be educated and everyone can be educated. He believed there should be no social distinctions in teaching,so he set up the private school and recruit students from different social levels, broke down the noble classes’monopolize for the education.Confucius emphasize that schools have to put the education of morality on the first place, the main course of his classes are rite and benevolence. He put forward the idea that learn to meet practical needs, apply the knowledge. He was also the first to teach students in accordance of their aptitude. He successfully practiced hie idea of learn with indefatigable zeal, and be tireless in teaching. In the west,Socrates also pay much attention to the exploratory learning,He thought the tasks of the philosophy and teachers were not make up and spread the truth, but to create the new ideas. He did not just teach the students the new ideas,he prefer to through debate and and ask and answer to get the new ideas, and he never make sure the fixed ideas. In the process of education, they two both made the students as the main body of the teaching, and tried to stimulate the students’thoughts, and mobilize their enthusiasm. The time Confucius lived was when the slavery was going to break up, to revive the Rites of Zhou, his goal of education was to develop political talents,to absorb the civilians into the politics, make the gentleman and snob be back to their own positions. What Socrates faced at that time is the breaking up democracy, the injustice of the court, and he felt deep depressed for the violent rule.Though he did not participate in the politic himself,he encouraged his students to join the political life. The comparison of similarities and differences between Confucius and Socrates is of great importance to understand Chinese and western Cultural tradition, critically assimilate the positive factors of western education in ethics ,and promote theconstruction of contemporary ethical education in China.
When Socrates Meets ConfuciusIt is universally acknowledged that Socrates, the great ancient Greek philosopher, has imposed profound and far-reaching influence on the world with his ideas in education, moralizing and politics while Confucius, kind of Socrates’s counterpart in ancient China, is regarded as the greatest sage whose ideas have laid the foundation for Chinese thinking pattern. And since they were both fond of traveling around the county to advocate their thoughts and ideas, there could be a chance that Socrates traveled to ancient China and came across Confucius who was teaching his students, then two great minds met and discussed about their ideas of education. The most possible matter they may discuss is the ideal teaching method, also the one they were practicing. Socrates introduced Maieutics or Socratic Method to Confucius, and he insisted that every man has got his innate knowledge in his mind which is just like the baby in a pregnant woman’s body, and the teachers’ work is supposed to be help the students to give birth to that innate knowledge. In other words, he made conversations with the students to arouse the hidden knowledge in their minds by asking questions to make them aware of their ignorance and leading them to find the truth. And judging Confucius’s way of teaching by this standard, Socrates criticized Confucius for telling the students what’s true directly sometimes. Then Confucius would answer him withone sentence,” I would not give any guidance to them until they reach to the point that they must figure out it; I would not inspire of enlighten them if it isn’t that they have understood itbut can’t express it correctly and completely; I would give them no more examples if they can’t draw inferences about other cases from one instance ”. Here, both of them f ocus on enlightenment. Socratic Method is based on the presumption the students acquire knowledge in the very way he has assumed, i.e. like pregnant women giving birth to babies, but actually students acquire knowledge in various ways, we can’t simply imag ine or take it as granted that they all learn things in the same way, and treat them with one teaching strategy. And that brings them to the next question--educating students in accordance with their aptitude and cognitive rules.Confucius started by tell one example: both his students Zilu and Ranyou came to ask him that when they heard something whether they should put it into practice immediately, and he told Zilu not to practice it while he encouraged Ranyou to do it. He explained that Zilu was an adventurous man, so I told him to be cautious, but Ranyou was a little timid, so I encouraged him. Confucius pointed out that he got to know his students better though observing them and talking with them, and then he gave guidance to them according to his understanding of their aptitude. And when Socrates wanted to justify himself by saying that his Maieutics didhelp to arouse the students’innate intelligence, Confucius could make him speechless by asking,"what if the student shakes his head in answer to all q uestions? You still don’t give him a clue?"Indeed, different students follow the different cognitive pattern when they approach the world around them. Today we have many different theories with regard to the human cognition such as Theory of Tabula Rasa and Constructivism, we can not tell which one is right or wrong, because the only way tojudge them is whether it is suitable for the individuals. Teachers in the modern society should bear in mind that there is no fixed teaching method, so we should apply flexibly different teaching methods to deal with different students based on an in-depth understanding of their cognitive style.。
There are two comparable famous philosophers inthe world:one is Confu cious from China, the other is Socrates from Greek. Both of them teac h, but their teachin methods are quite different.Confucius helps stud ents get hang of the knowledge and ask them to bear it in mind. While Socrates encourages students to learn by inquiring. He debates with his students and sometimes there are even no standard answers at all. In my mind, the latter is more beneficial to students' creativi ties. When Socrates Meets ConfuciusI believe that many people are not sure what will happen if Socrates and Confucius met at the same time. Perhaps there are many similaritiesand differences in all aspects between them. I am more interested in theirperspective in education. Now let me use an example to represent theireducational point of view.Socrates and Confucius were privileged to teach in the same school. One day, a student asked Confucius, " A man fell into the water, I savedhimandthenhisfamilypreparetosendmeaheadofcattle, shouldIaccept it or not? And thenwhatwouldyoudoit?"Thestudentsadd,"everyonecanseemesavingrewards, recognizingthebenefitsofsaving, itwouldraisetheenthusiasm of saving people, later saw people fall into the water will rush to him. " Confucius noded. The student put the same question to ask the other teacher, Socrates. Socrates asked him, "What is your own opinion? And why do you think so? " The student replied, "it is wrong to receive people's gift, saving is a good thing to be, but receive other people's stuff is no real in my mind. ""What you say makes sense. " Socrates said. Students went on to say, " But I think I should take it to my things, in this case everyone will know the benefits of saving lives, preferring to save lives. " Socrates clap OK praise him.ItisobservedthatConfucius'heuristicmethodofteachingwasspecifically targeted at the State proposed by the prevalence of personal teaching. When Socrates Meets ConfuciusCommon people come to the world with nothing, and leave with nothing. Great people come to the world with nothing, but they’ll leave with endless possibilities. Socrates and Confucius are such great people. Assuming these two wise individuals with their regional thoughts deeply in mind meet one day, what kind of spectacle will happen on them or even in the two countries, especially in China?Firstly, Chinese will gradually realize the importance of the establishment of the legal system. The Confucianism centered on morality. It emphasizes that morality is much more important than the law, which inversely causes the citizen’s law consciousness to be light. While the Socrates lived in a more law-based country, comparing to the virtue, he attached greater importance to the legislation. So, when Socrates meets Confucius, he will share his legal awareness with Confucius and finally blend it to the Chinese culture. Secondly, Chinese will deal with things in a more rational and scientific way. In ancient China, most people are superstitious. The Confucianism spread some kind of mysterious figure, such as the god and the fairy. So, many times when it came to something difficult to deal with orexplain to the civilians, the rulers may choose to advocate the illusory theology to comfort them. This kind of handling will only cover up the facts in short term. While Socrates’thought is scientific, he may have an absolutely different way to deal with the same thing. Thus, when Socrates meets Confucius, as the days progressed, Chinese will be more rational and no longer depend on the so called god to bless for a good life, but try to work hard on their own.Thirdly, Chinese culture will be more inclusive and exoteric in academic. The Confucianism is almost authoritarian in the ancient times, especially in the Qing dynasty, which limited the development of other schools. Whereas the Socrates treats the academic in a broader way, he recognizes the freedom of learning. Therefore, when Socrates meets Confucius, Chinese culture will develop in a more inclusive and exoteric way. Different thoughts will integrate and the Chinese culture will“sparking”.In conclusion, if Socrates meets Confucius, great changes must have happened to China in the establishment of the legal system, the rational and scientific Chinese manners of dealing with things and the more inclusive and exoteric Chinese culture.。
When Socrates Meets ConfuciusI think many people have heard the story: As for the student whose dream is to be a clown in the future, the Chinese teacher will reprimand him as having no ambition at all, however, the foreign teacher will say: " May you bring laughter to the whole world”. From this, we can see great differences between Eastern and Western education, especially for educational ideas. Obviously, Western education attaches more emphasis on the interests of students and respects the students' individuality, whereas Chinese education places more emphasis on lofty goals and ignores what the student wants to become.Searching more deeply, we have to mention the two great educators---Socrates and Confucius, who have had great influence on Western and Eastern education. They have many striking similarities on educational thought. For example, they both advocate "no child left behind" on the object of education to promote the popularization of education and culture. And in their educational methods, both emphasize heuristic teaching, encourage the educated to think independently, and are against instilling teaching that gives the answer directly. But they also have big differences, which have greatly influenced education to this day so that the teachers have different attitudes to the student who has the same dream. On the one hand, Confucius attached great importance to ambition. He was of the opinion that in order to achieve something great, we should have a big ambition when we are young, and advocated that we should resist the temptation of material things and a pleasure-seeking lifestyle. Just as he said: “you cannot accomplish great things if you seek petty gains”. On another hand, he calls for self-restraint & returning to rites, which, to a large extent, neglect and restrain the development of personal individuality. He upheld that students should honor the teacher and respect his teaching, and children should follow their parents’ directions. All these teachings have profoundly impacted the current situation in Eastern education. Students lack personality, lack interest, and don’t even know what they want to be. And when a student wants to be a clown, the teacher will think he has no ambition, which I think is a thought-provoking assumption.Next, let’s look at Socrates, the ‘wise man of the West’. First, he is well known for one of his mottos, “Know yourself”. What this means is that we should have a clear vision for ourselves, what our interests are, what we really want to do and which occupation is the most suitable for ourselves. He wanted the student to become a more complete person thus leading to a happy life. No doubt, his teachings strongly influenced Western education, which aims to let the student know themselves, develop their own personality, do what they want to do, and be what they want to be. So, when the student says that he dreams of being a clown in the future, the teacher encouragingly will say : “May you bring laughter to the whole world”.Finally, I think Eastern and Western education are really very different in many aspects. We should learn many things from the Western style of education. For example, they pay attention to developing the students’ interests, encouraging them to try what they want to do, cultivating students’ operational ability and capacity toinnovate. But that doesn’t mean our education is good for nothing. We also have some advantages. For example, the Chinese students usually grasp a more solid grounding in fundamental knowledge, which builds a strong foundation for their future development . Thus, I think we should hold onto our advantages, but also learn from the Western style of education. Only then, we can have a better education!。
苏格拉底跟孔子的英语作文Socrates and Confucius, two of the most influential philosophers in Western and Eastern thought, respectively, lived in different parts of the world during the same historical period, yet their teachings share remarkable similarities and differences. This essay aims to explore the philosophical underpinnings of both thinkers, their methods of inquiry, and the impact of their teachings on society and education.Socrates, an Athenian philosopher, is known for his Socratic method, which involves questioning and dialogue to illuminate ideas and expose contradictions in one's beliefs. He believed in the power of critical thinking and the pursuit of wisdom, famously stating, "I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing." Socrates' approach to philosophy was fundamentally ethical, focusing on the nature of a good life and the virtues of justice, courage, and self-control.Confucius, on the other hand, was a Chinese philosopher whose teachings revolved around the concept of "Ren" (仁), which can be translated as "benevolence" or "humaneness." Confucius emphasized the importance of social harmony and the role of ritual (礼) in maintaining it. His philosophy was deeply rooted in the idea of the "Junzi" (君子), the ideal gentleman who leads by moral example and cultivates virtue throughself-improvement and education. Both Socrates and Confucius valued the role of education in shaping individuals and societies. Socrates encouraged his students to think for themselves, fostering a spirit of inquiry that would lead to self-awareness and moral growth. Similarly, Confucius advocated for the education of the masses, believing that knowledge and virtue could be taught and that everyone had the potential to improve themselves. However, their methods of teaching and their views on therole of the individual in society were distinct. Socrates' approach was more confrontational and individualistic, challenging his students to question everything, including the established norms and values of Athenian society. Confucius, in contrast, placed a greater emphasis on social order and the importance of adhering to traditional roles and rituals, which he saw as essential for maintaining harmony. The impact of their teachings has been profound and enduring. Socratic thought laid the groundwork for Western philosophy, influencing figures such as Plato and Aristotle, and continues to be a cornerstone of Western intellectual tradition. Confucianism, meanwhile, has shaped the social and political structures of China and other East Asian countries for centuries, with its emphasis on moral leadership and the importance of education. In conclusion, while Socrates and Confucius approached philosophy from different cultural perspectives, they both sought to guide individuals towards a life of virtue and wisdom. Their teachings have left an indelible mark on the development of human thought and continue to influenceethical and educational discourse today. Despite their differences, they share a common goal: to cultivate a society of thoughtful, virtuous individuals who strive for the betterment of themselves and their communities.。
In ancient Chinese and western, there are two education masters ca n be comparable to each other.one is Confucius in Chinaand the oth er one is the ancient Greek Socrates, which up to now are still prais ed in the world.Imagine, when Socrates meets Confucius, what sparks will they colli de out?As we know, Confucius is considered as the greatest of the ancient Chinese sages, and Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who was regarded as a saint dying for the pursuit of the truth. When it c omes to educational mode, they have something in common, but at the same time they still hold volume of different views. From the perspective of Confucius, Confucius's teaching method is t he gentleman type, although in the teaching he is an amiable old m an,he established the basic specification of teacher’sabsolute autho rity.In general, Confucius taught studentsby theknowledge-transfer ence way. Although he also prompted the student, what he did was intended to find ways to let them understand what the teacher sai d better. So he was not happy for students against the intention of t heir teacher. This educational mode ismore to cultivate students to t he teacher's loyalty and understanding, to believe in authority. However, Socrates’ teaching methods were quite different from Co nfucius’. He never taught studentsthe ready-made answers, buttoo kdispute, cross-examine and so on to force students to think for the mselves, and finally found the answer to their questions. He didn’t c are whether they thought the same with their teacher and they beli eve what the teacher saidor not.The Socrates’ mode is more to culti vate students their own reasoning ability and self-awareness. So Pla to, whowas good at thinking and pursued the dialectical way, beca me the heir of Socrates' education style. From the way of education, Confucius transmitted knowledge while Socrates forced students themselves to get knowledge;Confucius t aught people to believe while Socrates taughtthem to doubt.Of course, they both paid attention to the heuristic teaching and en couraged independent thinking instead of the force-feeding teachin g with results given directly. If they two learnt the teaching idea fro m each other, the world culture will be further integration. Also, Chi na's feudal culture bound won't continue for so long. Last but not le ast, the cultural conflicts will be reducedand the world will be more peaceful. When Socrates meets ConfuciusIn ancient times, there are two great educator. One was Confucius in China. The othe r was Socrates in Greece. They are still be praised in the world today. So, nowadays we discuss the topic " when Socrates meets confucius ". Of course, in the real world, there is no chance that they encounter with each other. However, there is a field of c onsciousness where they can exchange ideas through modern communications in th e whole world. Because their thoughts are still having a profound impact on moder n people. Not only did they advocated benevolence and goodness, but also they paid attention to humanism and concerned about people and society.Firstly, i image that they would become good friends and live in harmony with each o ther when Socrates meets Confucius. These are also entirely reflected from modern people communication activities such as Olympic, Copenhagen conference and so on . For example, we are committed to peace and opposed to the war. In addition, our c ommunications become more and more frequently in political, economical and cultu ral aspects, especially in Expo. Besides, many of the students choose to study abroad in order to exchange ideas. Thus, there is a peaceful exchange between friends whe n Socrates meets Confucius.Secondly, because they advocated benevolence and goodness. I image that they wou ld help each other when they would have suffered from difficulties. It is reflected fro m countries in the world. When a country encounters with a major disaster, the othe r countries will extend a helping hand. For example, an earthquake had struck Sichua n in china. Then, many countries also sent supplies to help deal with some problems.Thirdly, on the one hand, they had these ideas in common. On the other hand, they had the different emphases. Confucius laid emphasis on human ethics, adjusting the relationship between people. He paid attention to the social nature of people. Howe ver, Socrates advocated human freedom. Not only did he lay emphasis on human, bu t also he against God. He focused on the human personality. For instance, Although g ay marriage can not be legally recognized in china today. In the us, they are not only able to receive a marriage certificate, but also they can adopt a child, which is due to that they focus on personality. Thus, they do not scruple on pursuing something. All in all, when Socrates meets Confucius, it is not only a feast of ideas exchanged, bu t also it is a cultural collision.W HEN S OCRATES M EETS C ONFUCIUSGiants always represent their age,and they are always symbols of human civilization. Each nation owns its sages. In the east,Confucius is considered as the greatest saint. He is the major founder of our profound traditional Chinese culture and was rewarded as one of “the Top Ten Cultural Celebrities”. Confucianism, which he established and developed by his follower, had a significant influence on the formation of our national characteristics. His theory relates topolitics, economy ,education and aesthetics.Confucius was respected and remembered by offspring. At the same time ,Socrates was like a star shining in the sky of west.He was known as “the western Confucius”. As an Asian ,I know little about Socrates. But there is always a conventional image in my mind : an old man, barefoot ,in rags ,looking in to the sky and lost in thought. He has contributed to the western culture such associology ,education, natural philosophy, ethics and so on .In a word, they both share great fame in history and make significant sacrifices to the world.Although they lived in a different area and had different and created different life path, they shared some points in common.First, they are both not accepted by their age . To some extent,it is like a tragedy. Socrates accepted the final trial and died by drinkingpoison. Meanwhile ,Confucius led a vagrant life for years. The roots of their tragedy are that their advanced and profound thoughts conflict with the inherent social institutions and the interests of high ranks. Socrates lived in Athens where the democratic system has just boomed and the public worship absolute democracy as a guarantee of their happy life. However, there are many inherent errors. The absolute democracy means nothing. People may decided the important social affairs just by wills. Leaders chose by the system might not own the management talent. Socrates observed the fault and pointed it out loud to the public. He promoted that the king or those who had specialized abilities should govern the country. And rulers were ought to make rules and send commands, the ruled were ought to observe the orders. To some extent,it was the right medicine to the “illness” of the system and emphasized the leader’s excellent abilities. However,it went against the public will and sent Socrates to the last trail. So did Confucius. He lived in the Spring and Autumn Period ,which was a famous discord times in history. Every powerful chief set up their own separatist regime by force of arms and competed to enlarge their territory. They regarded the legalism as the only approach to success. Confucius promoted that the king should treat their people by benevolence. They should set the public interests as the first standard to make decisions. The thoughtswere fit for a peaceful dynasty to consolidate power. So Confucius’thoughts can not be employed in this era and he lived a frustrated life. While they were failed in politics, they both played an important role in education and shared great fame . They set the “it is never too old to learn” as their life motto. When Socrates was young,he was interested in natural philosophy and learned from people in the markets. He never gave up any chance to learn. And Confucius was born in a scholarly family. His mother created a great atmosphere for him to grow up and he read a lot at a young age. Then he learned various skills from famous teachers and did a great job.He once went to Zhou Dynasty to discuss issues with Laozi and respected laozi as his teacher. His famous saying"Two heads are always better than one"perfectly proved this. Both Socrates and Confucius are good at teaching. They combined the knowledge with conversations. They did not directly gave the correct answer and just led others to think and comprehensive, which is quite different from the teaching methods of today."Socrates irony" was the earliest form of debate.Through the conversation, let others found the contradiction and got the answer. They thought they did not know everything and kept modest. What they did was helping others to develop themselves.Their words were all recorded by their students through conversations. In a word, they spread knowledge. They did not set certain standards for their students. No matter rich or poor, they treated them all the same.In face of the knowledge, everyone is equal. And they did not build schools, but taught students everywhere in a causal atmosphere. In the little woods,Socrates talked with his students and discussed the vital issues.Confucius taught his students during the journey around the countries. His students followed him and took care of each other. He promoted that the poor should have the same opportunity to get education.Yan Hui,his favorite student, lived a poor life.Their students played a significant role in history like Plato and 72 persons of virtue. They concentrated more on the ethics and came up with standards to be a gentleman.Socrates thought virtue was knowledge.Only when a person own the ethical knowledge ,would he do the moral conduct. He believed that everyone was born with moral sense.Ethics was the basic norm of behaviour. The core of Confucius' theories was benevolence. He encouraged people to be kind to others.Do not push or force others to do the things they are unwilling to do.They all regard ethics as the core value of life. They promote people with moral virtue to take charge of the country.Although Socrates and Confucius have so much in common, there are still many differences based on the different background. In the west, nearly everyone think that God created the world. They think highlyof religion and the bishop take charge of the social business. So Socrates' theories are connected with the God.Although he did not worship the god that westerners believed in,he approved that some deity was really existing. And the deity was omnipotent and knowledgeable. However people are ignorant. The most significant thing of life is learning about oneself. While in the east, the feudalism is gradually forming, and people are connected with agriculture.Confucius' theories are more about national life.He advocates the etiquette of Zhou Dynasty and wants to set it as standard of behaviour which is based on the education that he received. And Socrates’ theories are more abstract,he pays attention to the philosophy about human beings and society. He brings the philosophy from heaven to the ground and to people’s normal life. He says that people need to learn about themselves. The world and the knowledge are changeable. Human are actually ignorant. Only the deity is really wise. He created a new era. He also thinks that soul is immutable and there are differences between mind and matter. He is regarded as the founder of Idealism. He came up with inductive demonstration of argumentation and general definition.,which are the starting point of science. The process of debate is getting conclusion. The most famous is Spiritual midwifery method. However ,Confucius’ theories arespecific, such as how to be a gentleman, how to study and so on. He concentrates more on the self improvement. He is the model of Chinese. In my opinion,we should regard Socrates and Confucius as the bridge of communication between the west and east. Nowadays ,globalization is an irreversible trend. And cooperation is necessary for all the countries. They are all the representatives of their culture and have a profound influence on the generations. However ,most people are just familiar with their own sage and know little about other culture. It is a must to introduce the sage to each other and get more connection.Recently ,China has built many Confucius Institutes all over the world to spread the Chinese culture and led a Mandarin fever. A great many foreigners get access to learn about China and study aboard in China. But Chinese have few chances to know about western culture.,although they have a fancy on western festivals. To learn about a culture need learn the intention and history. I hope that government or organizations could recommend more cultural sages like Socrates to us to exchange culture. What impressed me most are their views on education. It is apparent to see that the government try to give every kid an opportunity to receive education. The civil organizations also contribute a lot to the Hope Project. Now, the serious issue is how to give education. What students received today is exam-oriented education. Students can notlearn skills but to recite knowledge points to get high marks. Before university, the ultimate goal is to enter the best university. Students study for 12 years just to get a passport to university. In the process, the loss of creativity and imagination is inestimable.Socrates and Confucius use conversations to lead students to find answers themselves. The western education is more free and flexible. We should combine the advantages to develop a valuable to teach. After getting intocollege, many students lost their directions and be confused about future. Some are even addicted to games. We should learn from the sage ,they are learning all the time. When Socrates meets Confucius, they will discuss life ,ethics and so on. The most important is they want to leave their wisdom the next generations and lead them to live a happy life. Sages are like lighthouses to point the right directions when human are confused.Reference: 1.the origin of western wisdomWhen Socrates MeetsConfuciusI believe that many people are not sure what will happen if Socrates and Confucius met at the same time. Perhaps there are many similaritiesand differences in all aspects between them. I am more interested in their perspective in education. Now let me use an example to represent their educational point of view.Socrates and Confucius were privileged to teach in the same school. One day, a student asked Confucius, " A man fell into the water, I saved him and then his family prepare to send me a head of cattle, should I accept it or not? " Confucius told him, "You have to accept it, you think, you saved him, what would his family think? And then what would they do? "The student replied, "they'll appreciate me, wanted to repay me, and then they will give me something to express their gratitude to me. " Confucius said, "If you accept her gift of what other people think? And then what would you do it? "The students add, "everyone can see me saving rewards, recognizing the benefits of saving, it would raise the enthusiasm of saving people, later saw people fall into the water will rush to him. " "What you say makes sense. " Socrates said. Students went on to say, " But I think I should take it to my things, in this case everyonewill know the benefits of saving lives, preferring to save lives. " Socrates clap OK praise him.It is observed that Confucius' heuristic method of teaching was specifically targeted at the State proposed by the prevalence of personal teaching. He opposed the teaching approach that parrot others, does not stimulate students' teaching positive thought. He was a prominent feature in the teaching process, namely the importance for students to learn and think about organically, to acquire knowledge independently, to develop cognitive abilities. And in the process of teaching, he is often implemented progressively, inspired students ' thinking step by step and improved the ability of students ' level of knowledge and awareness. When Socrates was teaching, he likes to keep the student made various question. The time his students unable to come up with the correct answers to questions, he was not anxious to correct the mistake, instead, he asked a question in reply contraposes these errors, at this rate the original errors become more pronounced, put students' thought into "confused " state. In this State, the students thought it was the correct and perfect things, something turn out proving to be wrong or flawed, which makes their original ideas disintegrate completely. Therefore, when Socrates Meets Confucius, they are likely to collaborate to manage a school well.。

When Socrates Meets ConfuciusConfucius, who is riding his vehicle with his disciples, meets Socrates, who always walks around to look for people to talk about questions which involves many aspects. Socrates can clearly hear the sound of “Is it not delightful to have friends coming from far ?”which come from the vehicle. Socrates replies:”It is equal to the reputation of China is a state of ceremonies.”After the normal meeting etiquette, a sharp discussion begins.Socrates: Do you think you are a wise man?Confucius: Hold what you really know and tell what you do not know, this will lead to knowledge.Socrates:Which is the best way to make up for the thing you don’t know?Confucius: Among any three people walking, I will find something to learn for sure. Their good qualities are to be followedand their shortcomings are to be avoided.Socrates: I’d also like to know how can you find your shortcomings ?Confucius: Today I reflect on me for three times.Socrates: This might be a good way. But reflecting on yourself is not enough.Confucius: Be well-informed and suspend judgment on things indoubt; hear much and reject the doubtful points. Socrates: Not all the thing said by the authority is right. In my opinion, we need to speak out the problems which bothersus. On the contrary, why do you leave them in your mind? Confucius: The gentleman wishes to be slow in speech but quick in action.Socrates: I beg to differ from you on the opinion. Without the discussion, there would be no truth .Confucius: Those who are glib in their speech and wear an ingratiating expression have little benevolence aboutthem .Socrates: It’s true that ingratiating expression doesn’t make us feel good. And eloquence is a virtue.Confucius: When a man may be spoken with, not to speak to him is to err in reference to the man. When a man may not bespoken with, to speak to him is to err in reference to ourwords. When Socarets meets Confucius,…
In a TV program, a young gorgeous lady, with a straight black hair going down to her waist, bright eyes, enchanting gesture and almost
ten-centimeter high-heel shoes, showing us a piece of hot dance came out tobe a hundred percent man, which gave the whole audience a total shock. Out of curiosity, I searched the internet broadly and in detail.
The truth turns out as it is.This beautiful young guy named Ye Zihan is a cross-gender actor, enjoying a good fame among the young generation, while suffering terrible stresses from his own
family, especially from his father, who is so fed up with his action that he always turns a blind eye and deaf ear to his news. It seems that he has got himself into a delimma whether to persist in his dreams or just give in to cater for his family, so it comes with me whether his behavior is right or not?
Theoretically, it doesn’t make sense for sure, especially in a society that worships Confucius and reveres his words and deeds as sacred, because in the Confucius’theoretical system, Confucian doctrine of filial piety always comes the priority. To be more specific, a gentleman should obey their parents’will, do what they advocate and never go against them no matter how improper it is. Still, a real man should develop great ambition, focusing on “self-cultivating, family-regulating, state-ordering and then the land great governed”. While, irony enough, let’s take a look at of what he’s been keen on: dropping out of the senior high school, making up and dressing up the way peculiar to the female, and reveling in the so-called career produces nothing worth but laughter.
But in fact, he not only gets himself successfully survival and acceptable and makes himself famous and prevalent among the public, even rewarded as an exotic flower of the cross-gender performance field. How can it come this way? There must exist some moral values different but rewarding in favor of his action, drive him brave enough to be himself, pursue what he’s been long ing for and wins a warm welcome in the end. Maybe it’s the thoughts that derive from another greatest illuminative ideologist--Mesocarps, who strongly believes that each individual is unique and they’re endowed to develop their internal potential freely and equally, no matter who they are, enlighten him to gain the energy and encouragement to achieve himself
and edify the mass to open their mind and accept something maybe new and strange at first sight, but eventually get themselves amused and relaxed from the bottom of heart.
Yet, that’s not to say Mesocarps goes superior to Confucius, for both of them have created the most glorious culture and paved the way for the development of either the Western world or the Eastern world as the thinking guidelines. The example above just shows us the charm of the melange of greatest minds. We learn to attach great importance to be rigious and mind the world under the influence of Confucius, while gain the ambition and strong-will to be unique and draw out the potential capacities with the introduction of Western thoughts, Socarets for instance. Only in this way will our civilization become more enriched, splendid and last forever as a great treasure for the whole nation, and even the whole world.
