2019-2020年高中英语Unit5Thepowerofnature-section1Part Two: Teaching Resources (第二部分:教学资源)Section 1: A text structure analysis of AN EXCITING JOBI. Type of writing and summary of the textII. A retold version of the textMy job is traveling distant mountains to observe them and meet people from around the mountains. The mountains are not the ordinary ones you see daily. They are volcanoes. So I may work outdoors, use instruments and meet with occasional dangerous eruptions. The job is dangerous and exciting. It makes me feel excited. For I am out to keep people alive and protect them from being hurt.I am now work for a Hawaiian volcano observatory. I collect information about an active volcano called Mount Kilauea. You may not have heard of it, I think. When a volcano erupts we try to save lives by urging people to leave their homes as quick as possible. Then, very soon, the houses, the villages might be moved out of places and get covered with volcano ashes. All that exist in its path would be burned to the ground by the boiling rock erupted from the crater of the volcano. Huge rocks might crash to the sky and back to the ground, causing great dangers to all that is around the mountain. The high buildings fall down and bee buried under the molten rock.Even today, years after, I still cannot forget my first sight of the volcano eruption. That day we arrived at a small mountain village close to a volcano. We went to bed and soon fell fast asleep. All of sudden we heard a strong sound outside the window. Because I had experienced earthquakes before, I did not take much notice. I went back to sleep. Then suddenly the sky outside became as bright as day. I ran out of the room into the back garden to see in the distance the volcano erupting in the side of the mountain. It was fountaining violently into the sky. It was really an absolutely fantastic sight. The next day I was lucky to have a closer look at the volcano. I was driven up the mountain to be very close to the crater to collect ashes from it. I put on thick glasses and jacket look like a spaceman in the flying suits. We made our way to the top of the smoking mountain. We looked down into the crater and climbed down into it. We collected lots of rock and ash for later study. We stayed at the top for two hours, being so enthusiastic about the job and so amazed at the sight that we took no notice of the damage which might done to us.2019-2020年高中英语Unit5Thepowerofnature-section3Part Two: Teaching Resources (第二部分:教学资源)Section 3: Words and expressions from Unit 2 Healthy eatingexcite []v. 1. produce a magnetic field in: Excite the neurons. 2. raise to a higher energy level: Excite the atoms. 3. arouse or elicit a feeling 4. stir feelings in: Excite the audience. 5. act as a stimulant 6. stimulate sexually 7. stir the feelings, emotions, or peace of 8. cause to be agitated, excited, or rousedimpress []n. the act of coercing someone into government service v. 1. dye (fabric) before it is spun 2. produce or try to produce a vivid impression of 3. mark or stamp with or as if with pressure: To make a batik, you impress a design with wax. 4. impress positively: The young chess player impressed her audience. 5. take (someone) against his will for pulsory service, especially on board a ship 6. reproduce by printing 7. have an emotional or cognitive impact upon: This child impressed me as unusually mature.cancel []n. a notation cancelling a previous sharp or flat v. 1. declare null and void; make ineffective: cancel the election results 2. postpone indefinitely or annul something that was scheduled: cancel the dinner partyeffort []n. 1. use of physical or mental energy; hard work: He got an A for effort. 2. earnest and conscientious activity intended to do or acplish something: make an effort to cover all the reading material 3. a notable achievement: The book was her finest effort. 4. a series of actions advancing a principle or tending toward a particular end: contributed to the war effort. relieve []v. 1. take by stealing: The thief relieved me of $100. 2. free from a burden, evil, or distress 3. provide physical relief, as from pain: This pill will relieve your headaches. 4. alleviate or remove: relieve the pressure and the stresstremble []n. reflex shaking caused by cold or fear or excitement v. move or jerk quickly and involuntarily up and down or sidewaysanxious []adj. 1. causing or fraught with or showing anxiety: spent an anxious night waiting for the test results 2. mentally upset over possible misfortune or danger etc; worried: anxious parents panic []n. sudden mass fear and anxiety over anticipated events: panic in the stock market. v. 1. cause sudden fear in or fill with sudden panic: The mere thought of an isolation cell panickedthe prisoners. 2. be overe by a sudden fear: The students panicked when told that final exams were less than a week away.courage []n. a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain without showing fear: He didn't have the courage to tell his mother that he had failed in the exam.diverse []adj. 1. distinctly dissimilar or unlike: diverse parts of the country 2. many and different: a person of diverse talentsunique []adj. 1. highly unusual or rare but not the single instance: spoke with a unique accent 2. the single one of its kind: the unique existing example of Donne's handwriting 3. radically distinctive and without equal: Bach was unique in his handling of counterpoint.bathe []n. the act of swimming: The Englishman said he had a good bathe. v. 1. cleanse the entire body: bathe daily 2. clean one's body by immersion into water: It’s a good habit to bathe every day. 3. suffuse with or as if with light: The room was bathed in sunlight.swallow1 []n. 1. the act of swallowing: One swallow of the liquid was enough. 2. small long-winged songbird noted for swift graceful flight and the regularity of its migrations 3. a small amount of liquid food v. 1. believe or accept without questioning or challenge: Am I supposed to swallow that story? It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up. Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and on you. There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire breakouts during an earthquake. Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged. Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you. Never use the elevator to go down. Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out. Use the staircases at all times. If you are outdoors, do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place. Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object. If trapped in debris (瓦砾堆), cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you. Use a whistle (哨子) if one is available. Never shout for help. Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust. Do not light a match because you may burn yourself. AAvalanches(雪崩) are one of those natural disasters that can cause great damage and only Mother Nature knows when and where they’re going to occur.Even with modern technology it’s still impossible to know exactly when or where one is going to occur.Mountain climbers are wise to be careful, as avalanches kill many of them each year. The physics of how and why an avalanche occurs is complex. There are times of higher probability.During the year, the transition from winter to spring will cause some snow and ice to melt, which may trigger avalanches. Also at daybreak there is a higher probability due to the temperature change. While climbers hike up slopes (斜坡), some distance between the climbers should be kept.If an avalanche occurs, then there will be fewer lives lost and a higher probability that someone will be able to seek help.Since an accident is more likely to happen when a top layer of snow is loose, avoid areas where heavy snow or rain has recently occurred.Try to choose areas that you are familiar with and stay in areas with rocks, bushes and trees.Trees and bushes allow snow to pile up and keep the layers stable (稳定的).If an avalanche occurs, trees will take the impact of the snow, so there is a better chance of being safe.Climbers must also pay attention to the degree of the slope.Avalanches won’t occur on level ground and there is little snowfall on very steep areas. The greatest danger is in areas where the slope is between 25 and 40 degrees.Remember that, if you get stuck in an avalanche, there is no car hire available to take you to the nearest airport.1.What do we know from the first paragraph?A.Many mountain climbers die of avalanches each year.B.Of all the natural disasters, avalanches cause the greatest damage.C.Most climbers who meet avalanches die for not paying enough attention to avalanches.D.With the development of science and technology, avalanches can now be predicted exactly.2.The underlined word “trigger” in the second paragraph probably means “”.A.make use ofB.result inC.put an end toD.slow down3.It wouldn’t be a good idea for a climber to while climbing a mountain.A.keep some distance from other climbersB.avoid areas where heavy snow or rain has recently occurredC.choose areas that he or she is familiar withD.climb up a slope which is between 25 and 40 degreesBThe ground we walk on seems firm, but deep under the earth and under the sea the rocks change and move.In some parts of the world there are “fire mountains”, which we call volcanoes. From time to time they burst open and throw out fire and burning ash. These volcanoes are very dangerous.Hong Kong does not have any volcanoes but there are many in Indonesia and the Philippines. There is also a famous mountain near Tokyo, Japan, which is a volcano too.Its name is Mount Fuji. For much of the year, it is covered with snow. One of the most famous volcanoes which erupted in recent times was Krakatoa, on an island in Indonesia. The first explosions (爆发) took place on 20th May, 1883, but the big eruption did not come until the 26th and 27th August of that year. The people on the island were used to the explosions by that time, and so they were completely unprepared for this terrible happening.Almost all the people on the island died and the explosion also made huge waves in the sea, which drowned (淹死) many people on the other island nearby. After the eruption was over, people saw that the whole northern part of the island had completely disappeared.Scientists say that 15 cubic (立方的) kilometres of rocks and ash were thrown up in the explosion. The noise of the explosion was heard nearly 5,000 kilometres away in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and the city of Jakarta was completely dark for about two and a half hours.4.There are many volcanoes .A.everywhere in the worldB.under the earth and the seaC.in Hong KongD.in Indonesia5.Mount Fuji is famous just because .A.it is covered with snow for much of the yearB.it is a volcanoC.it is near TokyoD.it is in Japan6.The people near Krakatoa were unprepared when it had its biggest explosion because people there .A.had never met any explosions of the volcano beforeB.were used to the explosions of the volcano by that timeC.didn’t want to leave their islandD.could do nothing but waitCAre you a morning person? You might not like the findings in this new research. From a lack of air and drinking water to solar radiation, theoretical Mars pioneers face any number of potential obstacles to settling on the red planet. Now, scientists have found something else to add to the list: seriously messed-up biological clocks. One day on Mars—whic h scientists refer to as the solar day, or “sol”—is 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth. A team of European scientists recently demonstrated why that could be a problem.Circadian rhythms are the body’s natural cycles of rest and waking, which tend to fo llow roughly 24-hour light-dark cycles. These natural rhythms—which play a role in biological functions including brainwave activity and hormone production—can be interrupted by things like jet lag(时差) and night shift work. For the study, the researchers compared mice with healthy, 24-hour circadian clocks to mice with a genetic change that caused them to have shorter, 20-hour circadian clocks. The mice with healthy biological clocks were more likely to survive and reproduce, while the mice with shorter biological clocks were more likely to die off. What does this all have to do with space travel? Since the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth, people with shorter circadian clocks could suffer from health problems as they try to adapt to the rotational speed of the red planet.Unfortunately, the body is unlikely to adapt to the new conditions or“learn” to develop a longer clock. As Loudon explained,“Learning is not a likely option.”In other words: sorry, super-early risers—NASA might not want you for the next Mars mission.7.From the passage, people can face the following troubles living on Mars EXCEPT .A.absence of airB. a lot of fierce creaturesC. lack of drinking waterD. messed-up biological clocks8.According to scientists, how long does one day on Mars last?A. 24 hours.B. 23 hours and 23 minutes.C. 24 hours and 37 minutes.D. 12 hours and 37 minutes.9.How did the researchers study what effect living on Mars has on sleep?A. By comparing different mice.B. By analysing computer data.C. By experiments in spaceships.D. By observing and judging.10.Life on Mars would seriously mess up your sleep because .A. the brainwave activity will be interruptedB. the body’s natural cycles can be shortenedC. hormone production will hurt biological functionsD. the Martian sol is longer than a day on Earth第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
Section Ⅰ Warming Up & Reading—ComprehendingⅠ阅读理解AIn sociology, consumption is about so much more than just taking in or using up resources. Humans consume to survive, but in today’s world, we also consume to amuse ourselves, and as a way to share time and experiences with others. We consume not only material goods but also services, experiences, information, and cultural products like art, music, film, and television. Most of us spend our days consuming rather than producing goods. On any given day, one might travel to work by bus, train, or car; work in an office that requires electricity, gas, water, paper and a host of digital goods; pick up dry cleaning; purchase health products at a drug store; use purchased groceries to prepare dinner, and then spend the evening watching television, enjoying social media, or reading a book.We often organize visits with others around the act of consuming, whether it be sitting down to eat a homecooked meal as a family, taking in a movie with a date, or meeting friends for a shopping trip at the mall. In addition, we often use consumer goods to express our feelings for others through the practice of giftgiving.Sociologists also see consumption as an important part of the process of forming and expressing both individual and group identities. In daily life, we choose consumer goods that we feel that they can say something about who we are. Our consumer choices are often meant to reflect our values and lifestyle, and in doing so, send visual signals to others about the kind of person we are.But sociologists recognize that some troubling implications follow the centrality of consumption in social life. We often make assumptions(假设), without even realizing it, about a person’s character, social standing, values, and beliefs, or even their intelligence, based on how we understand their consumer practices. Therefore, from the sociological perspective, there’s much more to consumption than meeting the eye. In fact, there’s so much to study about consumption that there’s a whole subfield(分支) dedicated to it: the sociology of consumption.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要从社会学角度介绍了消费的相关知识。
