英语作文-寻求灵感,启迪艺术创作Creativity is the heartbeat of art, the force that drives innovation, and the soul that breathes life into every masterpiece. But what happens when inspiration seems elusive, when the well of creativity runs dry? In these moments, artists often embark on a journey in search of inspiration, seeking to reignite the spark that fuels their imagination and propels their work forward.Inspiration, like a mysterious muse, can manifest itself in myriad forms. It may whisper softly in the rustle of leaves, or blaze brightly in the colors of a vibrant sunset. It may hide in the lines of a beloved poem, or dance gracefully in the movements of a captivating performance. Wherever it resides, the quest for inspiration is a deeply personal and often transformative experience. One of the most powerful sources of inspiration lies in the world around us. Nature, with its boundless beauty and infinite complexity, has long been a muse for artists across disciplines. From the sweeping landscapes of the countryside to the intricate patterns of a single leaf, nature offers a treasure trove of sights, sounds, and sensations waiting to be discovered.Consider the work of the Impressionist painters, who found inspiration in the play of light and color on the natural world. In their quest to capture the fleeting moments of everyday life, artists like Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh sought out landscapes bathed in the golden glow of dawn or the soft hues of twilight. Their paintings, suffused with a sense of atmosphere and emotion, continue to captivate audiences to this day.But inspiration is not limited to the external world; it can also spring from within. Self-reflection, introspection, and personal experiences can all serve as fertile ground for artistic inspiration. Through the exploration of one's own thoughts, feelings, and memories, artists can uncover universal truths and themes that resonate deeply with audiences.Take, for example, the poetry of Emily Dickinson, whose introspective verses delve into the depths of the human soul. Drawing on her own experiences of love, loss, and longing, Dickinson crafted poems that are at once intensely personal and universally relevant. In her words, we find echoes of our own joys and sorrows, fears and hopes, connecting us across time and space. In addition to nature and introspection, collaboration can also be a powerful catalyst for inspiration. By engaging with other artists, sharing ideas, and exchanging feedback, creators can push the boundaries of their own creativity and embark on journeys of artistic discovery together.Consider the collaborations between composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, whose operas, including "Don Giovanni" and "The Marriage of Figaro," revolutionized the genre. Through their partnership, Mozart and Da Ponte brought to life stories of love, betrayal, and redemption, creating works that continue to inspire and enthrall audiences centuries later.Ultimately, the search for inspiration is a deeply personal and often unpredictable journey. It may lead us down unexpected paths, challenge us to confront our deepest fears and desires, and ultimately transform us in ways we never imagined possible. But in the end, it is through this journey that we find our truest selves and create art that speaks to the hearts of others. In the words of artist Georgia O'Keeffe, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way—things I had no words for." So let us embrace the journey of inspiration, wherever it may lead, and allow it to guide us on our path to artistic expression and enlightenment.。

我想要学习一个劳动技能的英语作文I Want to Learn a Labor SkillHi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 10 years old. I'm in the 5th grade at Oakwood Elementary School. I've been thinking a lot lately about the future and what kind of job I might want when I grow up. It's hard to know for sure since I'm still just a kid. But one thing I do know is that I really want to learn a useful labor skill - something hands-on where I can work with my hands and body to build or make things.A lot of my friends want to be doctors, lawyers, scientists, or professional athletes when they grow up. Those are fine careers, I guess. But to me, they seem kind of boring jobs where you're stuck in an office or lab all day. I want a job where I'm active and moving around, not stuck at a desk. I have too much energy to sit still for that long!My dad is a construction worker and that's the kind of job I'm really interested in. He builds houses, office buildings, schools - you name it. When I was younger, he used to take me to his construction sites on weekends sometimes. I loved watching the huge machines dig up the earth and pour concrete. And then seeing all the workers put the wooden frames togetherand do all the detail work to make it a finished building. It was like painting a giant 3D picture, but with power tools instead of paintbrushes!I could definitely see myself being a construction worker when I'm older. Doesn't that sound like the coolest job? You get to work outdoors, listen to music on your headphones, and put actual buildings together with your own two hands. Plus, my dad says construction workers make really good money if you stick with it and gain more skills over the years. But construction work isn't the only hands-on labor skill I'm considering. I'm also really fascinated by how things are made in factories. Have you ever seen videos of those huge assembly lines where robots and human workers put every little part together to build something like a car or television? It looks like a big dance with everybody having their own step to perform perfectly in sync. I think working on an assembly line would be a ton of fun, like solving a giant puzzle over and over again. My uncle works at the local auto factory assembling car engines. For my 10th birthday, he gave me a little engine model kit to put together myself. It had hundreds of tiny plastic pieces that you had to very carefully snap and screw together in just the right order. It took me all weekend, but I loved every minute of it!Piecing together all those little components one-by-one until it became a complete working engine model was just so satisfying.I could totally see myself doing that kind of detail assembly work in a factory.Or maybe I'll learn a craft like woodworking, metalworking, or even something artistic like glassblowing. I just love the idea of taking raw materials and transforming them into beautiful, functional objects with my own skills and creativity. It would make me feel so proud to point at something I personally built or made and say "I created that from scratch!"My grandpa is a retired carpenter and he's going to start teaching me some basic woodworking skills this summer. We're going to make a birdhouse together as my first project. I can't wait! I've seen the kind of gorgeous wooden furniture he's made over the years and it would be incredible if I could one day create pieces that intricate and well-crafted. He always says "Measure twice, cut once" - which must be the woodworker's motto about being very precise. No matter what kind of labor skill I ultimately decide to pursue, I know it's going to involve a lot of hard work and determination to master the craft. But that's perfectly fine by me. I've never been someone who's afraid of getting my hands dirtyand putting in the effort on tough projects that take time. I think I have the patience and stick-to-itiveness to stick with ahands-on skilled trade for the long haul.Sure, it would probably be easier to just go to college and get some normal office job. But what fun is there in that? I want a career where I can constantly learn new techniques, create useful and beautiful things from scratch, and use my mind and body together to make a living. To me, there's no greater satisfaction than standing back at the end of a hard day's work and taking pride in whatever I managed to build, fix, or assemble with my own labor. Bringing things into this world that didn't exist before just by combining my skills and efforts with raw materials - that's true magic if you ask me.I have so much more respect for skilled tradespeople and factory workers than a lot of people seem to these days. We couldn't function as a society without their labor creating all the buildings, roads, vehicles, furniture and countless other things we use every single day. These skilled laborers are the true backbone and engine that allows our modern world to even operate. So why not be one of those highly skilled workers myself? It's honest work that you can take real pride in and make a great living for your family. I don't need to be brilliant orbook-smart - I just need patience, determination, and a willingness to work hard with my hands each day to slowly master my craft over many years. That's my dream career path for now at least - to spend my life learning and practicing a skilled manual labor trade of some kind. Woodworking, metalworking, construction, factory assembly, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, the options are endless for becoming a true craftsman who builds useful things that improve people's lives. I'll get to be creative, problem-solve, work with my hands, and see the incredible results of my efforts become real, tangible objects when I'm finished each day.Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind twenty times before I'm an adult and ready for the workforce! But for now, I'm seriously leaning towards a career as a skilled laborer and craftsman over a desk job. I just have this deep, inner drive to build and create things from scratch using my own skills. I want a job where I can move around, get sweaty and dirty, listen to music, and put something together piece-by-piece until it becomes a completed, functional object that does what it's supposed to do perfectly. To me, that's true satisfaction in a career - not just pushing paper around, but assembling realthings that make the world better using your own hands as creative tools.I realize I'm still a kid with a lot of life ahead of me to figure it all out. But cultivating hands-on skills that allow me to build and create is definitely my goal. Maybe I'll be a construction foreman like my dad one day, rapidly assembling houses from the ground up. Or an auto worker putting together vehicles from the most basic parts on the assembly line. Perhaps I'll master woodworking and sell my own handmade furniture. Wherever life takes me, I know it's going to involve wielding tools, supplies, and raw materials to craft something useful and purposeful through good ol' fashioned hard work. Being able to look back at the end of each day and see the REAL, TANGIBLE results of my skilled labor is what I'm craving. Here's to one day becoming a true craftsman!。

Being a craftsman is super cool because you get to work with your hands and create useful or beautiful objects that others can enjoy.I dream of becoming an excellent craftsman one day. It seems like such an interesting job where you're always learning new skills and making awesome stuff. But it's not easy to become a true master of a craft. It takes years of hard practice, patience, and dedication. Here are some tips for young people like me who hope to develop outstanding craftsmanship skills:Find Your PassionThe first step is figuring out what kind of craft excites you the most. There are so many possibilities - woodworking, metalworking, sewing, glassblowing, pottery, jewelry making, and more. Maybe you're drawn to working with natural materials like wood or clay. Or perhaps you prefer metals, fabrics, or other manufactured materials.Think about the types of objects that fascinate you. Do you admire intricately carved furniture? Are you amazed by the details in hand-sewn clothing? Or do you find yourself staring at the curves of a beautifully blown glass vase? Identifying what craft speaks to your heart and interests is key.Learn the FundamentalsOnce you've chosen your craft, it's time to learn the fundamentals from the ground up. Mastering the basic skills and techniques is crucial before you can move on to more advanced levels. Don't skip this vital step! For example, if you want to become a woodworker, start by learning all about different woods and their properties. Study how to properly use and care for basic tools like hammers, saws, chisels and sanders. Practice fundamental skills like precise measuring, cutting, shaping and joining pieces of wood.Having a solid foundation will make the more complicated methods easier to understand later. Be patient with yourself asyou are learning. Developing skills takes a lot of repetition and time.Find Good TeachersHaving knowledgeable teachers to learn from is so important when you're starting out. Seek out experienced craftsmen who can provide guidance, feedback and share their expertise. Really pay attention and absorb everything they demonstrate.Maybe you're lucky and have a parent, relative or family friend who can mentor you in their craft. If not, look for community centers, guilds, clubs or vocational schools that offer classes taught by masters of the trade you want to pursue.Don't just read books or watch videos - having an instructor who can work with you in-person is extremely valuable. They can correct your technique, answer questions, and provide personalized advice as you practice. Finding quality teachers will dramatically accelerate your learning.Practice DiligentlyCraftsmanship isn't something that can be rushed. It requires repeating the same processes over and over again until you've built up skill through sheer repetition of practice. Even mastercraftsmen practice certain basic exercises consistently to maintain and refine their abilities.Set aside regular time to work on your craft each day or week. Start small with short, frequent practice sessions and then gradually increase the duration as you build strength and endurance. High quality work takes patience and meticulousness - there are no shortcuts. Also, don't be afraid to make mistakes as you practice. That's how we learn! Examine your errors, figure out what went wrong, and use those lessons to improve next time. Crafting is about constantly experimenting and tweaking techniques.Develop Your CreativityWhile strong technical skills are essential for craftsmen, creativity and artistic vision are also vital. Don't just become a robot who can perfectly reproduce the same object over and over. Let your imagination run wild!Combine different materials, colors and methods in unique ways. Design your own original patterns or functional object ideas. Find creative solutions to construct something that's never been made before. Leave your personal signature andself-expression on everything you make.A big part of being an outstanding craftsman is infusing your work with artistic flair and innovative thinking. Channeling that creative energy into your craft will set your pieces apart and make them distinctly yours.Be Patient and PersistentMastering a professional-level craft takes years and years of dedicated hard work. True craftsmanship cannot be rushed or obtained through some quick shortcut. You have to fully commit yourself to this long journey. There will be times when you feel frustrated with your slow progress. Or you may temporarily lose motivation and passion after obstacles or setbacks. During these tough stretches, be patient with yourself and persistent in continuing your practice. If you stick with it diligently, you'll be amazed at the skills you develop over time. Don't give up on your craftsmanship dreams! Have faith in your abilities and let your love for your craft fuel you forward every single day.So in summary, if you hope to become an excellent craftsman someday, find the hands-on craft you're most passionate about. Learn proper fundamental techniques from good teachers. Practice diligently through repetition. Let yourcreative vision shine through in your work. And above all, stay patient and persistent on this incredibly rewarding life-long journey. With serious commitment and hard work over many years, you too could join the ranks of highly skilled craftsmen and women. Imagine the immense pride and satisfaction you'll feel as you create beautiful or useful objects with your own two hands! Craftsmanship is such an amazing skill to develop and share with the world.篇2How to Become an Excellent CraftsmanHave you ever made something with your own two hands? Maybe you built a birdhouse in woodshop class or made a cool clay sculpture. It feels really good to create something yourself, doesn't it? Well, there are people whose job it is to make amazing things every single day. They are called craftsmen and craftswomen.A craftsman is someone who is an expert at a particular craft or trade that involves making things skillfully with their hands. Some examples of craftsmen are carpenters, jewelers, potters, glassblowers, and furniture makers. These people have spent years perfecting their craft through hard work and dedication.Wouldn't it be awesome to become a master craftsman when you grow up? Just imagine wood carving beautiful furniture, blowing colorful glass vases, or creating shimmering golden rings! If you have a passion for making things and working with your hands, then becoming a craftsman could be the perfect job for you. But how do you get there? Let me share some tips on how to become an excellent craftsman:First, you need to choose a craft that you absolutely love. Do you enjoy drawing or painting? Maybe you are good with tools and building things out of wood? Or perhaps you like sculpting clay or working with metals and gems to make jewelry? Find the craft that speaks to your heart and skills. You'll need to devote countless hours to mastering it, so make sure it's something you really, really enjoy.Next, get some basic training in your chosen craft. This could be through a high school shop class, community college courses, an apprenticeship program, or even books and online tutorials. Having a solid foundation from a skilled teacher will give you the proper techniques right from the start. Trying to learn a complexcraft solely through trial-and-error can lead to developing bad habits that are hard to un-learn later. After you have the basics down, practice as much as humanly possible. The old saying is definitely true - "Practice makes perfect!" Spend countless hours sketching new designs, carving wood, blowing glass, or whatever your craft involves. Make a hundred toothpick models before attempting to build an entire chair. Sculpt a thousand vases before trying to recreate a complex series of glass figures. The more you practice and create, the better your skills will become. While you're practicing, get feedback from experienced craftsmen. Maybe there is a woodcarver in your neighborhood that can watch you work and give you pointers? Or see if any artisan guilds allow students to get advice from masters? A fresh set of eyes can spot flaws or inefficiencies that you can't see yourself. Let the masters critique your work - don't take it personally, just learn from their advice.Read books, watch videos, and thoroughly study the history and evolution of your chosen craft. Learn about the pioneering figures who created techniques that are still used today. Understand the cultural contexts and traditions surrounding your craft across different regions of the world. Having thisdeeper knowledge will give you more appreciation and perspective. As you continue to develop your skills over many years of hard work, start experimenting and innovating with new techniques of your own. Don't just copy exactly what others have done before you. Try blending different styles and putting your own creative spin on your craft. The most renowned craftsmen are trendsetters who create completely new designs and methods within their field.Be meticulous about using the absolute best materials for your craft projects. A house framed with low-quality wood is going to be shabby. Jewelry made from fake gemstones and cheap metals will look cheap. If you want to create pieces that are truly magnificent and built to last generations, then you must invest in the finest raw materials available - even if they cost more money.Have incredible patience and don't rush projects, even if a deadline is looming. A master wooden cabinetsmaking craftsman once told me "You can make something slowly and properly, or quickly and poorly - but never both ways at once." Dedicate the necessary time to complete each tiny step with careand precision. A rushed shortcut today could ruin the integrity of the entire final product. Finally, once you've achieved a high level of mastery in your craft through decades of hard work, start teaching others. The most excellent craftsmen and artisans are those who nurture passion in the next generation by sharing their knowledge as mentors. Not only does teaching allow the crafting traditions to be preserved, but you may learn new perspectives from your students as well!Becoming a true master craftsman won't be easy - it takes immense dedication, thousands of hours of practice, and a lifelong commitment. But if you have creative hands, a patient spirit, and the will to keep learning over many years, then this could be an extremely rewarding path for you. Just imagine people marveling at your artistic creations for generations to come! What could be more fulfilling than that?篇3How to Become an Excellent CraftsmanHave you ever looked at a beautifully crafted piece of furniture or a work of art and wondered how it was made? Well, behind every masterpiece lies an excellent craftsman whodedicated countless hours to perfecting their craft. A craftsman is someone who creates things with their hands, using tools and techniques passed down through generations. Becoming an excellent craftsman takes more than just skill; it requires passion, patience, and a willingness to learn.Firstly, you need to find your passion. What kind of craft interests you the most? Is it woodworking, pottery, metalworking, or something else entirely? It's essential to choose a craft that you genuinely enjoy because it will take a lot of time and effort to become an expert. If you're not passionate about what you're doing, you'll quickly lose interest and give up.Once you've found your passion, it's time to learn the basics. Every craft has its own set of tools, materials, and techniques that you need to master. You can learn from books, online tutorials, or even better, find a mentor who can guide you through the process. A mentor is someone who has already mastered the craft and can share their knowledge and experience with you.As you learn the basics, it's important to practice, practice, practice! The more you practice, the better you'll become. Don't get discouraged if your first few attempts aren't perfect. Remember, even the greatest craftsmen started out as beginners. Keep practicing, and you'll see improvement with each attempt. One of the key qualities of an excellent craftsman is patience. Creating something by hand takes time, and you can't rush the process. You need to be willing to take your time and pay attention to every detail. Rushing through a project will only lead to mistakes and sloppy work.Another important quality is attention to detail. An excellent craftsman takes pride in their work and strives for perfection. They notice even the smallest flaws and work tirelessly to correct them. This level of attention to detail is what separates a good craftsman from an excellent one.As you continue to practice and improve your skills, you'll start to develop your own unique style. Every craftsman has their own way of doing things, and their work reflects their personality and creativity. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new techniques. Some of the most innovative and beautiful pieces of art and craft were created by craftsmen who weren't afraid to think outside the box.One of the most rewarding aspects of being a craftsman is the ability to create something that will last for generations. A well-crafted piece of furniture or artwork can be passed down from generation to generation, becoming a cherished family heirloom. Imagine the pride and joy you'll feel knowing thatsomething you created with your own hands will be appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.Of course, being an excellent craftsman isn't just about creating beautiful things. You never know, you might inspire the next generation of excellent craftsmen. In conclusion, becoming an excellent craftsman requires passion, patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn and practice. It's a journey filled with challenges and rewards, but the sense of accomplishment you'll feel when you create something truly beautiful with your own hands is worth every effort. comprehensive and tell an appealing story on the current academic debate on managerial pay policies, their determinants and implications for corpor-ate behaviours. The book is a very good resource for accounting researchers who want to extend their own understanding and positions on compensation practices with a cross-disciplinary perspective to the topic.Practitioners and compensation consultants will find this to be a well-written,accessible book that provides enough detail on managerial pay practices without being overly technical. Those teaching accounting compensation seminars will appreciate the comprehensiveness of the sources quoted in the text. However,I do not envision this book as a ‘stand alone’text in advanced accounting compensation seminars. My caveat would be to integrate it with additional references from the accounting and finance literatures.Overall,I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in developing an in-depth understanding of the most critical issues surrounding pay and incentives.Note 1Out of the 1046references cited in the book about 48%are articles published in management, organisational behaviour, sociology and psychology be learned.186Book ReviewsD o w n l o a d e d b y [U n i v e r s i t y o f S y d n e y ] a t 22:36 29 N o v e m b e r 2013And the back cover promises to deliver something which is ‘ideal for both novice and experienced interview researchers as well as graduate students’.For the qualitatively oriented reader here is something tempting and practical at hand which,at instant impression, makes useful reading.Expectations run high:‘This will help me in getting it right’.But how do the book’s 315text pages fare in a critical evaluation? The first 100pages provide an introduction to,and a conceptualisation of,inter-view research. For the more experienced scholar, important considerations become addressed:Here is a brief history of interviewing, mentioning Freud,Piaget and Mayo en passage ,followed by a reminder that we live in an ‘interview society’.We then plunge into phenomenology, famous philosophical dialogues and so called therapeutic interviews –with more name-dropping attached. After this, fundamental epistemological issues are brought up.In this very genre, are we mere miners and collectors of knowledge or travellers that construct knowledge in social processes? What are the features of interview knowledge as something produced, relational, conversational, contextual, linguistic, narrative and pragmatic? What is the relationship between interviews and positivism?Continuing its deep-dive,the book then moves into the key ethical issues that concern interviewing and finally resurfaces with a somewhat disoriented discussion of research interviewing as ‘craft’.Summing up,for the experienced scholar the first 100pages provide a reassuring intellectual landscape –a reminder of the fundamental questions at stake in this particular profession.Clearly, this book is not about interviews in a narrow, technical sense. But in the mind of the impatient novice, anxiety creeps in:‘This is an ambiguous terrain. And I still don’t have a clue about how to proceed.’The second part of the book, comprising its remaining 200pages or so,is titled ‘Seven Stages of an Interview Investigation’.Finally something practical and actionable, the average reader could expect. However, instead of these seven distinct stages, the reader confronts 12separate subsections.Their interconnect-ing logic leaves,I’m afraid, room for some improvement. The first chapter,on thematising and designing an interview study, seems a bit confusing. It opens a rather discouraging perspective into the emotional dynamics of an interview journey. It flirts with several blueprints for the ‘stages’of an interview which may produce more ambiguity than clarity. And in a way at odds with the interpretive tradition,it is concerned about the ‘generalisability’of the interview findings. In almost apologetic tones, the book rushes ahead to ‘mixed methods’and illustrates the combination of the qualitative method and statistical data analysis with the Kinsey study on sexual behavior. The following chapters on conducting an interview,on different forms of inter-viewing and on interview quality do provide the much expected, more practical advice,as well as some appealing illustrations of the ‘craft’.What is missing, however,is the sufficient emphasis on how theory should –in any theoretically oriented qualitative investigation –guide the interview study.Theory’s guiding influence is under-represented here:How the research questions and the scripting of the interview are related to specific theoretical interests –how focused Book Reviews 187D o w n l o a d e d b y [U n i v e r s i t y o f S y d n e y ] a t 22:36 29 N o v e m b e r 2013theoretical purposes are carefully operationalised in a qualitative interview study –is not discussed in sufficient depth. This same a-theoretical bias can also be discerned in what follows, when the book turns towards the task of transcribing interviews and to the critical issue of interview analysis. In my view, there is,of course,no such thing as a ‘neutral’analysis of interview material.Every reading of it is a partial,theoreti-cally sensitised interpretation.Other interpretations, taking other theoretical per-spectives,are possible and should be welcomed. This could have been explained more fully in this part of the book.Nevertheless, some parts of these sections seem truly instructive. We learn about transcription as subtle transformation from oral language to written form, and about the important practicalities of tran-scription.Hermeneutical interpretations of meaning are brought up.Both narra-tive and discourse analysis,as well as deconstruction, become addressed. Some disturbing statements in this section must finally be acknowledged though:Is it really so that ‘the ideal interview is already analysed by the time the sound recor-der is turned off’(p.190)?And is a positivistic undertone buried, after all,on page 240,under the following claim:‘A mechanical application of methods does not guarantee knowledge that is objective, reliable, valid,or generalizable’.The remaining part of the book focuses first on the issue of validity. It quite rightly points out that validation is not ‘inspection at the end of the production line’,but suggests quality control throughout the different stages of a qualitative enquiry. The chapter moves on to discuss communicative and pragmatic validity, and then falls back again on the House Ghost that seems to haunt this book –on the question of ‘generalisation’from interview studies. This chapter concludes, however, with a useful, crisp synopsis on notorious misunderstandings relating to case studies, and on the counterarguments that should be raised against these. The book draws to a close with a chapter on the reporting of interview knowledge and with a final reflective chapter that summarises the book’s central themes under the rubric ‘conversations about interviews’.The authors make a very good point in stating that boring interview reports may result from contemporary hyper-empiricism.Overall,their practical advice on report-ing is informative, but could be strengthened by underlining, again, the role of theory:After all,we rarely should report research findings without considering the specific theoretical starting points of the study. In the final chapter, some rather provocative statements stand out from its broad reflection,as for instance in what follows:‘It is hard to produce new knowledge through interviews that goes beyond common sense and which may be pragmatically helpful in under-standing or even changing a social situation’(p.299).This book provides a comprehensive, multifaceted and at times not-so-easily digestible discussion about qualitative research that mobilises interviews. The book can be picked up by the more experienced scholar who seeks new interdis-ciplinary insight as well as some comforting reassurance. But this is not a book for the novice. It is not a pragmatic and inspiring book about how to conduct research interviews in practice. For practical purposes, for actually improving 188Book ReviewsD o w n l o a d e d b y [U n i v e r s i t y o f S y d n e y ] a t 22:36 29 N o v e m b e r 2013the ‘craft’of interviews, too many issues remain open.Especially for the qualitatively oriented accounting researcher in particular,it would be instructive to know something about interviews that take place in an organisational context. In what ways do we build a pre-understanding of the organisation and its partici-pants before the interviews? How do we decide whom to interview and what to ask from specific organisational actors? What techniques do we employ in steering the course of the interview?Which other sources of field data from the organisation can be used to triangulate and interpret interview data? And how do we use theories of accounting before, during and after the precious inter-views?There is little in this presentation to answer for instance these questions.I guess the fundamental problem here is that ‘the research interview’means different things in different disciplines, domains and scientific traditions. This book tries to be an ‘all-round book’about interviews and qualitative research –in a fragmented world. This is two psychologists speaking,as can be seen from the book’s illustrations of interviews:We are in the psychoanalytic therapy room asking questions about hatred. We are in the classroom asking college students what they feel about their grades.Or we are in Kinsey’s bedroom asking the more intimate questions. But we are not in accounting,of all things –asking somebody something about accounting, within an organiza-tionally embedded management context.Hence,I very much do regret having to conclude that this book on interviews will not help us much in ‘getting it right’whilst studying our field. This thoroughly written book does, however, open some interesting, wider perspectives on the qualitative research endeavour.Juhani Vaivio Aalto University School of Economics #2012Juhani Vaivio Book Reviews 189D o w n l o a d e d b y [U n i v e r s i t y o f S y d n e y ] a t 22:36 29 N o v e m b e r
