Statuses(身份) are part of human inventions that help us get along with one another and determine where we “fit” in society. As we go about our daily routin es, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, and so on.The statuses we take often vary with the people we meet and change throughout life. Most of us can quickly adjust our statuses that various situations or occasions require. Most of social interaction(互动) consists of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to take their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of judgment. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits, the buyer can choose style and fabric (衣料). But an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Furthermore, our choice is limited to a size that will fit, as well as by our pocketbook(钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can make certain changes, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks(衣架). Statues too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited. 76. What is the function of statuses ? 天津高考英语百日训练之阅读表达(78)含答案详解【题文】Happy Leap Day! Leap Day, you ask? Yes, it’s February 29. You may notice this date didn’t appear on the last year’s calendar, or the year before that, or…That’s because Leap Day happens every four years and 2014 is a leap year.A leap year has 366 days instead of the usual 365 days that an ordinary year has.An extra day is added to the calendar in a leap year, and here’s why: The 365 days of the calendar are meant to match up with the solar year.A solar year is the time it tak es the Earth to complete its orbit around the Sun, about one year. But the Earth’s yearly trip around the Sun takes a bit longer than 365 days. The orbit takes 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds, to be exact. That time equals roughly one quarter of a day, so the calendar and the solar year don’t match accurately. After a few years, that extra time in the solar year begins to accumulate. After four years, for example, the four extra quarter days will make the calendar fall behind the solar year by about a day.According to the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies — a club for people born on Leap Day — there are an estimated 4 million people whose birthdays come but every four years. But who wants to wait four years to celebrate his/her birthday? Most celebrate yearly on February 28 or March 1.There was a time when strict rules prevented women from proposing marriage to their beloved. In most cultures, that’s not the case anymore. In fact, female pioneers who thought this rule was clearly unfair managed to get Leap Year established as an acceptable time for women to to unmarried men.So on February 29, a man could be surprised at an offer he couldn’t refuse. The first documentation of this day of ladies’ choice was in 1288 in Scotland.Officials then d ecided to pass a law that allowed women to propose marriage to men of their choice in that year. They also made it a law that any man who said no to a proposal in a leap day had to pay a fine. The fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.55.What is the main idea of the first two paragraphs? After I left Saigon, Vietnam (越南) in 1975, I landed in San Francisco and attended a summer school in Daly where I met Mr. K. I prepared myself for the seventh grade in Colma Junior High. At that time I didn’t speak English, but only Vietnamese and a little French.Mr. K’s first question was what my name was and his second was how to properly pronounce it in Vietnamese. He repeated it several times until he got the difficult pronunciation almost right at last. Then I didn’t feel I was an outsider any more. In the following days, I was his echo. He would hold a card up in front of me with a picture. I would repeat after him, copying his gestures (手势). Since he could say my Vietnamese name, surely I could bend my tongue to make myself sound more American. That first summer, he gave me an “A” that I was shy about. I knew it wasn’t my real grade. And soon the Vietnamese boy became the American teacher’s pet. It was my task to go and get his lunch, clean the blackboard and collect and hand out homework. When I missed the bus, he’d drive me home.Mr. K also started a little book club. He gave each of us a box with books in it and it felt a bit like Christmas in July. I turned the pages in wonder. Perhaps the smell of fresh ink, paper and glue became the smell of imagination. I did not yet know how to read in English, oh, but I couldn’t wait to learn!I pushed myself very hard to move forward. After a few months, I began to speak English freely, and didn’t depend on Mr. K’s cards any more. By my second year in America, I was getting the second “A”, a “A” this time. 天津高考英语百日训练之阅读表达(70)含答案详解第一节【题文】阅读表达(10分)Critics often speak of “the rich” as if those at the very top of the income ladder aren’t honest or as if becoming rich is difficult and means others must become poorer. However, we must add that achieving the statu s of “the rich” isn’t particularly difficult, contrary to popular wisdom. The rules for acquiring huge wealth are few and simple, one of which is to avoid temptations. That is easier said than done, and we don’t intendedly recommend all people to lead a pu re and joyless life.To have a good chance at being rich, most individuals will need at least a college education, which will double their incomes over what they would have earned with only a high school diploma. A professional degree will result in an average annual income of about twice that of college graduates. The first auxiliary rule for becoming rich is to ________ or, if out of school, go back to it. Of course, to stay in school is not enough and they’ll learn something worth the time and effort. It has never been easier to get an education. College costs have been rising steadily for more than a decade. However, the rate of return on a college education has been rising as well, making the investment a good deal. The second auxiliary rule for becoming rich is to pick your education carefully. Teachers will find getting rich tougher than engineers, given that the former can expect to earn half as much over their careers. Music professors may earn much less than their students who major in business. The third auxiliary rule for becoming rich is to marry someone with an equal or higher education, and then stay married. By itself, marriage seems to provide a stable institutional setting that promotes greater earnings, which affords greater savings. From our perspective, becoming rich is really a matter of choice and opportunities exist in large numbers.71. What impression do the rich often leave on critics? (No more than 5 words)72. Why is a college education essential to become wealthy? (No more than 10 words)73. 高一英语百日训练之 阅读理解(57)含答案详解【题文】Do you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander. Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming.Researchers from the university of California, Santa Barbara, found an association between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes having participants first do an “unusua l-use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could. Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual -use task” again: complete a difficult task; complete an easy task; take a 12-minute break; or skip the 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again.Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity. But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought”. Even when you are n ot actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way. When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas.Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander.12. The “unusual -use task” in Paragraph 2 means that participants ______.A. complete an easy taskB. complete a very difficult taskC. take a 12-minute breakD. think of various ways to use an object13. I heard them talking.“Is anyone at home” the father asked.“Just my mean elder sister, Sara, and she’s probably in her room as usual,” my sister replied. I couldn’t believe it. I opened the door, thanked the father for bringing her home then shut the door and started to cry.To make a long story short, a huge fight followed that ended with me driving my sister to her room. But I realized that what was worse than the fight was that I really hadn’t been a good elder sister.I had lost track of what was important, and what really mattered. I had been fallen into a whirlpool漩涡of pressure and competition, and it took my sister’s honest observation to show me that the grades I got didn’t matter to everyone---certainly not to her. All that matters to her is that I’m her elder sister, and that’s what matters to me, too.1:What kind of life did the author live at high school no more than 5 words ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 2: What does the underlined phrase “dropped off” in Paragraph 3 meansno more than 3 words________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 3:Why did the auth or’s sister consider her as a mean sister No more than 8 words________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 4:What happened to the two sisters one day according to the passage no more than 5 words________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ 5:What lesson do you learn from the author;s experience no more than 20 words__________________________________ __________________________________2 Before he sailed round the world sin already surprised his friends several t world but failed. Several operations and speech classes later, when she was seven, we found out that Jenny had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis风湿性关节炎. She could not put pressure on the heels of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe. All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine, and I would often wrap her feet in towels and hold her until the pain eased. But, as soon as she could bear the pain, Jenny immediately carried on, as though she were free of pain. She was very popular and funny, attending every football game and cheering the team on, carrying her pillow everywhere she went, so that she could reduce the pain. Then came her senior year. She would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award and losing out.So Jenny came to a decision, and in her strange manner, she began to bombard the high school football coach with requests. She promised. She got her best friend to sign up with her. Finally, the coach gave in, with the warning, “If you miss ONE game, you are out”She carried big buckets of water to her teammates. She bandaged knees and ankles before every game. Many years ago it was described as “a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole.”So some golf officials figure that if they make the hole 15 inches wide — about the size of an extra-large pizza— players will score better, play faster and have more fun. Some folks even want to allow players to hit do-over shots (after bad ones) or throw the ball out of sand traps. These changes are being suggested because there were about 30 million golfers in 2005, and by 2012, that number had dropped to about 25 million, according to the National Golf Foundation. And the game is not very popular among kids.I have played golf since I was a child, and I think bigger holes would be great, especially for kids and beginning golfers. Think about it: We change the rules in lots of kids’ sports to make the games easier and more fun to play. Why should golf be any different? Many soccer leagues start kids with four-against-four matches on smaller fields without goalkeepers(守门员). This is great, because there is more scoring, and all the players get more touches.A 10-foot basket and a regular basketball are too much for most 7- or 8-year-olds. They can hardly get the ball to the basket. So kids play on an eight-foot basket with a smaller ball. But after a few years of putting the ball into a pizza-size hole, I hope kids would try the adult version of golf. Sports should be about challenging yourself and trying to get better. It’s hard to swim 100 meters or run a mile or learn to handle a puck(冰球) while skating. But when you do it, you feel proud and ready to take on something even harder. Games that are too easy become boring. In fact, golfers often work on their putting by placing a tee(高尔夫球的球基) or a coin on the practice green. Then they try to hit the tee or coin. After that, the 4.25-inch hole looks as big as an extra-large pizza.56. [1] Boys whose fathers work very long hours are more likely to be aggressive, according to a new research. A study of more than 1,400 children found those boys, whose fathers worked more than 55 hours a week, were more aggressive than their peers, yet the same thing didn’t happen to daughters. What’s more, mothers’ working hours did not seem to affect it.[2] Now, further research needs to be carried out to find out why this happens in males, and to look for ways to tackle it. In Germany, 15 percent of fathers of children, aged three and four, worked 55 or more hours a week. Dr. Jianghong Li said, “It is possible when fathers work very long hours, children are less well monitored after school, especially if mothers also work full time hours. There is some evidence young boys are less well monitored than girls, when fathers have high work related demands. As a result, it will cause more problems.[3] The average amount of time parents spend with their children has increased in recent years, but the quantity and quality of parent-child time is still raised as a concern. Studies in the US and Australia point to a desire among parents to work fewer hours and spend more time with their children. A wish among children is that parents would come home from work less tired and stressed.[4] The finding provides evidence to support equal opportunities for mothers and fathers to share parenting and work responsibilities. Instead of focusing on negative effects of mothers’working hours, policy makers should pay attention to negative results of fathers’long working hours for children’s emotional well being. Fathers should be urged not to work long hours, but to have a greater share of parenting responsibilities.76. What’s the main idea of the passage? (no more than 11 words)77. [1] Have you ever had the wish to live another 100 years or more? Experts say that scientific advances will some day enable us to live tens of years longer than what is now seen as the natural limit of the human life span.
[2] “I guess we are knocking at the door of living longer,” said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. “I think by 2075 we will ____________ and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).”
[3]At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louris, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology (纳米技术)make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. “There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,” he said.
[4]However, many scientists who specialize in aging are doubtful about it and say the human body is just not designed to live past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
[5]Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. “It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have a good quality of life?” said Leonard Poon, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. “At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.”
