ADo you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering around the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”.Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit ar e that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying ”. She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around. But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in-store discounts or free gifts. We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen, but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!1. The two questions in Paragraph 1 are raised to ________________.A. introduce the topicB. give two examplesC. compare different opinionsD. get answers from readers2. According to Amy Cashman, which is not the reason for showrooming?A. The lack of time.B. The comfort of the sofa.C. The shortness of money.D. The security of the product.3. The author’s attitude towards showrooming is __________________.A. criticalB. neutralC. casualD. supportiveBThere is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander the Great, King of Greek. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, and I have three wishes. Please carry them out without fail.”“My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “My physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be spread with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.”The king continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander’s favourite general kissed his hand and pressed it to his heart. “Oh, King, we assure you t hat your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any bodies. They are powerlessgranted.”“The second wish of spreading gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth.”“And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty-handed into this world and empty-handed out of this world.” With these words, the King closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.4. The first paragraph suggests that Alexander ________________.A. wanted to leave the world as he came empty-handedB. realized that what he got in his life was nothing to him at allC. was spending a lot time conquering many kingdoms and had earned a great amount of wealthD. regarded his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth as the most important things5. The underlined word “clutches” in Paragraph 4 means “___________”.A. sentenceB. attentionC. controlD. shadow6. The author intends to ________________.A. tell us the story of AlexanderB. stress the power of Alexander the GreatC. persuade people to realized what Alexander saidD. introduce readers to the instructive lessons of Alexander7. What would be the best title of the passage?A. The Death of AlexanderB. The Greed of AlexanderC. Three wishes of AlexanderD. The Life of AlexanderCA new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better on exams than those who use laptops.Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and legibility (清晰度). But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and apply the concepts they have been taught.Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop increased the tendency to make notes “mindlessly” by taking down word for word which the professors said.In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills. Thirty minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how well they understood concepts. The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts. Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts. The researchers’ report said, “While more notes are benefi cial, if the notes are taken mindlessly, as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears.” In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrotenotes by hand performed significantly better on the exam. These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for immediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the future.8. More and more students favor laptops for note-taking because they can ____________.A. write more notesB. digest concepts betterC. get higher scoresD. understand lecture better9. While taking notes, laptop users tend to be ________________.A. skillfulB. tirelessC. thoughtfulD. mindless10. The author of the passage aims to _________________.A. examine the importance of long-term memoryB. stress the benefit of taking notes by handC. explain the process of taking notesD. promote the use of laptops11. The passage is likely to appear in _________________.A. a finance reportB. a computer textbookC. a science magazineD. a newspaper advertisementDIf you don’t think technology can improve your trip, meet Judy Williams. When she and her husband recently checked into Blu Hotel in Zurich, a clerk asked themto sign the dotted line on a room rate hundreds of dollars higher than their online offer.“It was not a cheap stay,” says Williams, a lawyer from Billings, Mont. But it became more of one after her husband fired up the app he’d used to book their room on his smartphone.“As soon as we showed him the cost, he honored it,” Williams says.Technology may create challenge s for travelers but it can also solve them. It’s more than making sure of a hotel cost. The latest can help users select hotels by location, make a secure booking and view the confirmed (已确认的) cost so they never need to re-discuss their hotel price.Another pain point for travelers is traffic that eats away precious vacation time. There’s a new app called Commute which is aimed at users who have to make the same trip every day. But if you’re headed to Los Angeles or Honolulu, where visitor s can easily get stuck in hours of heavy traffic, Commute can help.Just input basic information about your destination and expected leaving time, and the app will start sending you traffic information 15 minutes before you leave. Testing Commute proved to be a challenge for me, because my home address is about 900 miles from my place of work. But if you have only a short distance to travel through a heavily populated area, you can use Commute to avoid traffic jams.Another source of travel-re lated problems is money. That’s particularly true when you’re dealing with a foreign currency. The latest Travel Money Tracker helps travelers prevent currency mix-ups. It immediately changes a country’s native currency to yours, so you know exactly how much that Espresso (浓咖啡) in Milan costs in dollars. It can also warn you when you’re overspending, which can sometimes be a problem when you’re on vacation. The only catch, of course, is that you have to remember to record all your purchases.Taken together, these apps solve some of the most common travel problems. But not all of them. Some things, no smartphone can fix, which means I get to keep my job – for now at least.12. What does the writer want to tell through the example of Judy Williams?A. The cost of Blu Hotel was higher than that of others.B. The clerk was very friendly and patient.C. The smartphones have many functions.D. Technology can make our trips better.13. Commute is not suitable for those who_______________.A. have a long journeyB. go on the same trip every dayC. can easily get stuck in traffic jamsD. travel a short distance downtown14. What is the function of Travel Money Tracker?A. It tells people how much Espresso costs.B. It warns people when they are shopping.C. It changes the native currency to yours.D. It records all people’s purchases.15. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To encourage people to travel.B. To introduce some new apps.C. To help people with technology problems.D. To provide people with traveling information.第二节(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2023-2024学年广东省佛山市顺德区第一中学高二上学期期中考试英语试题Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That’s right - during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin. But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them. “Running at an amazing pace,” Cassidy told Runner’s World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, “Help! He took my phone and laptop!”At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物) in a backyard. No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they’d seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site - and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush and right into the arms of campus police, who’d joined the chase shortly behind the runners. The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. “Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat,” Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. “But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities.”1. Why do the group members gather together?A.To do some stretching. B.To have a regular run.C.To deliver a lecture. D.To cover some topics.2. We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to ______.A.the assistance of the runners B.the owner of the row houseC.the campus police on patrol D.the joint efforts of the people3. Which of the following best describes Cassidy?A.Athletic and generous. B.Courageous and ambitious.C.Helpful and humorous. D.Thoughtful and demanding. In my everyday life, I am on an ongoing journey to figure out different ways to reduce my carbon footprint on the planet. A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas weproduce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices than, let's say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced goods? After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain.A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide(CO2)from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole lifecycle of products we use-those related to their production and breakdown.Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances(设备)that we need we can go with new, energy-saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy-saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.4. What is the text mainly about?A.What appliances to buy to save energy.B.What a carbon footprint means in our life.C.How to identify different carbon footprints.D.How to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices.5. What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint?A.It is related to our consumption of fuels.B.It is made when we are buying the products.C.It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint.D.It is counted as ours though not directly made by us.6. Which of the following helps reduce our carbon footprint according to the author?A.Using second-hand textbooks. B.Using old and expensive cars.C.Buying new but cheap clothes. D.Buying new wooden furniture.7. "The footprint" underlined in the last sentence refers to the CO2 produced in _________.A.using the product B.recycling the productC.making the product D.transporting the productResearchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another witha“vocabulary”of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges.Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they intentionally sent a message to another group member.“That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the onl y thing that looks like human language in that respect.”Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices deliberately to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said.Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signal ling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mother’s back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species out there that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter.Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”.“The unclearness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,”shesaid.“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains.”8. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter?A.Memorizing specific words. B.Understanding complex information.C.Using voices to communicate. D.Communicating messages on purpose. 9. What did Dr Shultz think of the study?A.It was well designed but poorly conducted.B.It was a good try but the findings were limited.C.It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable.D.It was a failure but the methods deserved praise.10. Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthroughB.Chimpanzees developed specific communication skillsC.Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdomD.Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated11. 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。

高二第一学期静校题(12周)ADear Sir / Madam,It worried me a lot when I heard of the plan to cut down St John’s Wood to make a car park for shoppers. Although I agree that the town is short of car parks, this idea would be improper. In the first place, the wood is an area of natural beauty. There are many ancient trees of an unusual kind. I often go there for a picnic or just to relax at weekends. The wood is, without doubt, a natural home for birds, animals and insects. If the trees were cut down, many species (物种) would be lost. Furthermore, the wood is right in the centre of a heavily polluted part of town. The trees help to make the air cleaner. The council (地方议会) says they are worried about global warming, yet they wish to cut down trees which help reduce the build-up of gases that lead to global warming because they feed on carbon dioxide. Besides, that area also suffers (遭受) from high noise levels from passing trucks and the railway line. The trees help reduce the noise levels and do a lot of good to the whole environment. In my opinion, cutting down the wood would be stupid and pointless. A car park may well attract shoppers to the town and increase the shopkeepers’ trade. However, a beautiful part of our town would be destroyed. I would be very interested in hearing what your other readers think.Yours faithfully,Roland Chang21. What has made Roland Chang feel worried?A. That the town is short of car parks.B. That shoppers park their cars badly.C. That there are few parks in the town.D. That a wood in the town might disappear.22.
