Can Indoor Plants Really Purify the Air?

Plants are very important to human life. Through photosynthesis (光合作用), they transform carbon dioxide into fresh oxygen. They ___21___(assume) to remove toxins from the air we breathe—but is this true?

One famous NASA experiment, published in 1989, has found indoor plants can clean the air by removing pollutants ___22___(cause) cancer. Later research has found soil micro-organisms in the potted plant also ___23___(play) a part in cleaning indoor air.

Based on this research, some scientists say house plants are effective natural air purifiers, and the bigger and leafier the plant, the better. The amount of leaf surface area influences the rate of air purification. ___24___, however, say the evidence that plants can effectively accomplish this feat (功绩) is far from conclusive.

“There are no de finitive studies to show that having indoor plants can significantly increase the air quality in your home,” ___25___Luz Claudio, a professor of environmental medicine and public health. “There’s no question ___26___plants are capable of removing volatile (易挥发的) chemical toxins from the air under laboratory conditions,” says Claudio. But in your home or office space, the notion that putting a few plants together can purify your air doesn’t have much hard science ___27___(back) it up.

Most research efforts to date, including the NASA study, placed indoor plants in small, ___28___(seal) environments to assess how much air-purifying power they have. “But those studies

aren’t really applicable to what happens in a house. In many cases, the air in your home compl etely turns over—that is, exchanges places with outdoor air—once every hour. In most instances, air

exchange with the outside has a

___29___(great) effect on indoor air quality than plants.” says Stanley Kays, a professor of horticulture (园艺学).

Disappointed ____30____many people may be by what Kays said, the professor also made it clear that he believes house plants are beneficial. Studies have shown plants can knock out stress and make people feel happier. More research shows spending time around nature has a positive effect on a person’s mood and energy levels.

Smart Homes Around the Corner

Internet-connected lights, locks and laundry machines are close to becoming everyday household items, thanks in part to voice-activated speakers such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home.

The market has witnessed increasing sales of lights that turn off when you say “good night”

smart locks that let in your friends before you get home, and other smart-home gadgets (小配件). Smart speakers and their digital assistants also have been growing in ___31___. From your couch, you can ask these smart assistants to play your favorite music, check the weather, order pizza or___32___flights.

While the devices are still relatively expensive—you can get six ___33___light bulbs for the price of a single smart one—___34___is likely to pick up further as prices fall in the future.

Moreover, the more people use such speakers, it turns out, the more things they want them to do. In some cases, that leads ___35___to other smart gadgets for the home. People who own an Echo are___36___more likely to install other smart gadgets, said David Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices and services. “They don’t start by rewiring the whol e home. They start with a switch.” That switch, known as a smart plug, can make any appliance remote-controllable by cutting or___37___its power—just ask an assistant to turn it off or on.

U.S. sales of smart speakers have more than tripled (增至三倍) to nearly 25 million in 2017, as shown by a CTA (Commodity Trading Advisors) ___38___. They’re expected to grow further this year, to about 36 million, as Apple’s HomePod joins the competition.

Smart-home products such as lights and security cameras are lagging behind, but they have been catching up. “We’re still in the early stages,” said Jeff Patton, a smart-home executive at General Electric. “While the gadgets aren’t yet ___39___” he said, “average people are much more aware of them”.

Alex Hawkinson, CEO of Sam sung’s Smart Things smart-home business, said that about half of his new customers are coming because of smart speakers “____40____a lot of excitement.” Once people get their first smart product, such as a smart plug, they are likely to buy more, market researchers say. They also tell friends and neighbors about them, and might buy some as gifts. 【答案】31. B 32. K

III. Reading Comprehension Section A

Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.

Children’s books are filled with fantastic friendships between humans and beasts. From a young age, we learn that if a tiger comes for tea we should expect it to eat all our sandwiches, and if a Peruvian bear___41___for lunch we had better have some marmalade (柑橘酱) in the cupboard.

In this fantasy world, we can coexist peacefully with large mammals. ___42___, in real life, young people are having fewer wild interactions than ever before. In part this is a result of ___43___screen time and decreased access to wild spaces. Perhaps it doesn’t help that many countries drove out their most exciting ___44___ —bears and wolves—centuries ago.

Had they not, more people in the developed world might now be facing similar problems to those in Novaya Zemlya. The playgrounds of this remote Russian archipelago (俄罗斯半岛) were recently___45___by a group of hungry polar bears, driven into human settlements in search of food and ___46___after rising temperatures destroyed the last hospitable slices of the Arctic sea ice. It’s the same story we see across the world: habitat ___47___ driving elephants to attack crops, human settlements spreading into tiger territory, and people losing their lives to big cats.

The Incident of the Polar Bear in the Playground is not a/an ___48___consequences to The Humans Who Melted the Ice Caps. We have known for years that Arctic temperatures are rising

at___49___rates. It should come as no surprise that the polar bears we have forced to leave their natural homes have ____50____shouting at humans’ front doors in search of their basic requirements for survival. Unfortunately, they are more ____51____ to be met with the business end of a shotgun than a marmalade sandwich. And who can criticize the people in the main settlement, Belushya Guba, for wanting to protect themselves?

We’ve had years to____52____these issues. This is not an unusual ____53____but the latest in a list of increasingly frequent human/polar bear incidents. And it’s part of an even longer list of rapidly growing areas where there is human/wildlife conflict. We can’t____54____the local residents of Novaya Zemlya for their quiet town becoming a bear refugee camp. They are not the ones burning fossil fuels, ____55____farming cows and flying across the world for business meetings. It’s almost always the case that those making the decisions that are most serious for the environment are the furthest from the consequences.

(A)

When I was a puppy, I entertained you and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite

a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever

I was “bad”, you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?”—but then you rolled me over for a belly (腹部) rub.

I remember those nights of rubbing you in bed and listening to your secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching

fo r a human mate. She, now your wife, is not a “dog person”—still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by the pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time in another room.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of

me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered “yes” and changed the subject. I had gone from being “your dog” to “just a dog”.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to another apartment that does not allow pets. You’ve made the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only family.

People in the animal shelter are attentive to me, but I lost my appetite. At first whenever anyone passed, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you—that this was all a bad dream or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

“What is civilization?” asked Kenneth Clark 50 years ago in the influential BBC series on the subject. “I don’t know, and I can’t define it in abstract terms, yet. But I think I can recognize it when I see it, and I’m looking at it now.” And he turned to gesture behind him, at the soaring Gothic towers and flying buttresses of Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院).

It seems inhuman to care more about a building than about people. That the sight of Notre Dame going up in flames has attracted so much more attention than floods in southern Africa which killed over 1,000 arouses understandable feelings of guilt. Yet the widespread, intense grief at the sight of the cathedral’s collapsing steeple (尖塔) is in fact profoundly human—and in a particularly 21st-century way.

It is not just the economy that is global today, it is culture too. People wander the world in search not just of jobs and security but also of beauty and history. Familiarity breeds affection.

A building on whose sunny steps you have rested, in front of which you have taken a selfie with your loved one, becomes a warm part of your memories and thus of yourself.

This visual age has given beauty new power, and social media have turned great works of art

into superstars. Only a few, though, have achieved this status. Just as there is only ever a handful of world-famous actors, so the pantheon (万神殿) of globally recognizable cultural symbols is tiny: the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s David, the Taj Mahal, the Great Pyramid— and Notre Dame. Disaster, too, is visual. In the 24 hours after the fire started, videos on social media of the burning cathedral were viewed nearly a quarter of a billion times.

Yet the emotions the sight aroused were less about the building itself than about what losing it might mean. Notre Dame is an expression of humanity at its collective best. Nobody could look up into that arched (拱形的) ceiling without wondering at the collective genius of the thousands of unknown craftsmen who, over a century and a half, realized a vision so grand in its structural ambition and so delicate in its hand-made detail. Its survival through 850 years of political unrest—through war, revolution and Nazi occupation—binds the present to the past.

63. The BBC series in the first paragraph is mentioned to show ________.

A. Notre Dame is a typical example of civilization

B. civilization is supposed to be defined in abstract terms

C. civilization was founded in the past and lasts for decades

D. it’s cruel to care more about buildings than about people

64. Notre Dame fire has aroused worldwide concerns because ________.

A. the disaster coincided with the floods in southern Africa

B. people has lost a historical landmark to take a selfie and rest

C. France’s economic prosperity has made it a must-see place for visitors

D. cultural globalization has bred a common sense of cultural identity

65. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. People’s sadness at the misfortune mainly lies in the building itself.

B. People wondered who contributed to such an artistic achievement.

C. Notre Dame is a witness to Nazi invasion and French revolution.

D. Fortunately we are blessed with countless splendid works of art.

66. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Notre Dame: The Architectural Treasure

B. Notre Dame: The Humanistic Expression

C. Notre Dame: A Victim To Natural Disaster

D. Notre Dame: A Must-be Tourist Attraction

The man who put romance back into roses for Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is when unromantic people splurge (挥霍) on overpriced roses and expensive restaurants. It doesn’t have to be this way. ___67___For this we have to thank David Austin, the rose guru (专家,大师), who died at 92 on 18 December last year.

Mr. A, as his staff knew him, brought romance back to roses, creating the English Rose, a marriage between fragrant Old Roses and the repeat-flowering Hybrid Tea varieties which had largely replaced them before the young son of a Shropshire farmer decided to change all that.

___68___But still most of the nurseries were unconvinced. It took another 20 years until his Mary Rose and Graham Thomas (named after his horticultural mentor) established Austin and his English Roses—colorful, repeat-flowering, deeply fragrant—in the hearts and gardens of British growers.

The rest is Chelsea-gilded history. Graham Thomas was later voted the world’s favorite rose and his Gertrude Jekyll was twice-named the UK’s favorite.

We have three roses on our London roof terrace: a spicy apricot that a few years ago won best plant at Chelsea; a Bengal Crimson from Great Dixter and a perfect yellow David Austin, named, I think, after an actress. ___69___

So steer clear of the more obvious flower choices for the 14th. Roses, like people, are rarely at their best after a long-haul (长途运输) flight. ___70___Maybe think about buying a rose for summer flowering. It is what Mr. A deserves and would have wanted.

A. Search out something personal, surprising and special.

B. The roses you receive today have been paid for in advance.

C. The love we share makes life so beautiful, and I love you more than roses can say.

D. As I write, the name escapes me but never the repeated flowering and its fragrance.

E. It took a decade of dedication before Austin’s Rosa Constance Spry was released in 1961.

F. Roses don’t have to come in red buds and straight stems, and they don’t have to smell of desperation.

IV. Summary Writing

71.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Live in the present moment

To a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrelevant to what happened yesterday, and what may or may not happen tomorrow.

Without question, many of us have mastered the art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things. We allow past problems to dominate our present moments so much that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed and hopeless. We have concern over events that might happen in the future—we won’ t have enough mo ney, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever. We also postpone our gratification, our priorities and happiness, often convincing ourselves that “someday” will be better than today. Unfortunately, that “someday” never arrives.

Life is what’s happening while we’re busy making other plans. When we’re busy making other plans, our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away and dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. Many people live as if life was a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn’t. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time we have any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, we push problems and fear from our minds.

The best strategy to improve our well-being is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said, “I have been through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened. I don’t think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your efforts will pay off.”

【答案】Living in the present moment is important. However, we always waste precious moment

worrying about what we have no control over, missing out on life by hoping for a better future which never comes. Since we can’t control the past and the future, care for those around us and focus on things at present. That improves happiness.

【答案】Nowadays, star-worshiping is popular among teenagers. I hear that you have spent a large amount of money on theses expensive goods endorsed by WuYiFan. I could not agree with you, because what you did causes some trouble.

First of all, It is a waste of much money .There are so many people in poverty, in anger and in desperation that you can give away your money to those in need. In my opinion. With your financial assistance, they will live a happier life. Besides, with a blind love for your idols, you firmly believe that his choices are the best. As a result, the stars’ clothes, hairstyles and hobbies, as well as their behaviors in public, are closely observed or followed, though, to some extent, they may be considered improper or even ridiculous. Finally, star-worshiping will make you lose your goals and lose yourself, affecting your future, which is very terrible. What you need is to achieve your ambition in your life.

So I think you shouldn’t worship them blindly. You can’t spend too much time about

star-worshiping. In this way can you become a useful person in the future.
