After years of trying to balance work with motherhood, Karl Smith left her corporate(公司的) job behind to start her own business.

It’s been over a decade since this mom entrepreneur began making cakes out of her family’s kitchen. In that time, she has managed to grow Magical Moments & Elite Party Rental into a well-developed wedding planning and rental operation. Statistics show that these kinds of mommy-owned business are on the rise. Many women say they can’t find work that allows them to balance their responsibilities at home.

Indeed, according to a national study conducted by Ipsos-Reid on behalf of Microsoft Canada, fifty-four percent of female small business owners agree that being able to work at home to raise their family was a key reason to leave the corporate world behind.

“ Being a mom entrepreneur means trading a typical 9-to-5 work week in for a more irregular routine,”says Gemma Moore, a busy mother of two who owns and operates MG Moore Designs, a design company specializing in website, photography and print media. “Finding a business that you can build in the evenings will allow you to spend time with your children during the day and continue your business after they go to school.”

Ninety-two percent of female small business owners say that mobile equipment and computer software can help a mom entrepreneur make her own hours and work whenever she is most productive. In fact, ninety-five percent agree that small business owners need to be more technology-savvy than ever before. The more technology they master, the more successfully they will run their business.

“Balance is a key aspect for most entrepreneurs, but this is especially true for women.”Says Ruth Bastedo, President, Women Entrepreneurs of Canada (WEC). “Entrepreneurs recognize that today’s technology can help them to find work/life balance while still providing them with the tools and materials they need to grow their

He held the blazing(点燃的) matches to a piece of wood. After a while, he became aware that he could smell his hands burning. Then he began to feel the pain. He opened his hands, and the blazing matches fell onto the snow. The flame went out in a puff of gray smoke.

The man looked up. The dog was still watching him. The man got the idea. He would kill the dog and bury his hands inside its warm body. When the feeling came back to his fingers, he could build another fire. He called to the dog. The dog heard danger in the man’s voice. It backed away. The man called again. This time the dog came closer. The man reached for his knife. But he had forgotten that he could not bend his fingers. He could not kill the dog, because he could not hold his knife.

The fear of death came over the man. He jumped up and began to run. The running began to make him feel better. Maybe running would make his feet warm. If he ran far enough, he would reach his friends at Henderson Creek. They would take

care of him.

It felt strange to run and not feel his feet when they hit the ground. He fell several times. He decided to rest a while. As he lay in the snow, he noticed that he was not shaking. He could not feel his nose or fingers or feet. Yet, he was feeling quite warm and comfortable. He realized he was going to die.

Well, he decided, he might as well take it like a man. There were ways to die. The man closed his eyes and floated into the most comfortable sleep he had ever known.

The dog sat facing him, waiting. Finally, the dog moved closer to the man and caught the smell of death. The animal threw back its head. It let out a long, soft cry to the cold stars in the black sky.

And then it turned and ran toward Henderson Creek where it knew there was food and a fire.

C

The stress levels of our students have reached a deadly point, and I am not just talking about those in high school. These days the pressure starts much earlier. From first grade on, many kids are burdened with too many hours of homework. It’s not

uncommon for a third grader to have two to three hours a night, replacing play time, story time, family time-even sleep.

Reinstate(恢复) all those physical education, art and music classes that were cut to make room for more academics. As if that weren’t enough, the need to succeed on relentless(冷酷无情的)standardized tests weighs heavily on little kids. You’d think that seeing anxious elementary school children throw up on their test booklets would make an impression on the schools. But as one teacher told me, she feels helpless to stop the testing, so she’s just learned to keep a wastebasket handy.

Parents are far from blameless either. It’s time to admit that we have allowed the schools to sacrifice our kid s’ childhoods while we stood by and helped.

But we can improve the situation if only we have the courage to do so. First, we’ve got to show some common sense. We all know how badly we react to nonstop stress-why would we expect our children to be any different? Next, we’ve got to admit that what we’ve been doing isn’t working. All of this pressure isn’t resulting in better performance, higher test scores or a greater international competitive edge. Indeed, many schools have found success in cutting back on homework without sacrificing test scores-and often improving them.

Research shows that exercise is key to proper brain development all the way through high school, and it’s well documented that it reduces stress. Art and music classes also provide relief.

And why not teach kids productive ways to manage stress (meditation, exercise, good nutrition and more)-not just as one unit in health class, but as an ongoing part of their education from an early age? If we show them how to take care of themselves, they might not get to the point where they develop all those stomach aches or turn to drugs and alcohol.

64. This passage was probably written in the tone of ____.

A. the parent

B. the teacher

C. the reporter

D. the student

65. It can be inferred that_____.

A.parents expect too much of their children

B.teachers have the right to stop tests

C.schools make greater achievements with more homework

D.students study better under heavier pressure

66. One more effective way for students to deal with the stress is_____.

A. to develop proper brain

B. to learn to care for themselves

C. to have art and music classes

D. to turn to drugs and alcohol

67. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Importance to Take Exercise

B. Importance to Get Higher Score

C. Stress Begins at High School

D. Stress Begins before High School

D

“There were no rush hours any more,” said Charles M. McLean, who runs the nation’s busiest road. “We have rush periods, and they keep getting longer and longer.”

McLean was describing Chicago's 235 mi1es of expressway. But the same might be said about almost any of the expressways that have become an important part of American city life---and about the heavy traffic that often blocks them.

In Chicago, a computerized system has been developed that controls traffic on the city's seven expressways. Now one man- a controller- can follow the movement of Chicago's traffic by looking at a set of lights.

The system uses electronic sensors that are built into each expressway, half a mile apart. Several times a second, the computer receives information from each sensor and translates it into green, yellow, or red lights on a map in the control room.

A green light means traffic is moving forty-five miles an hour, yellow means thirty to forty-five miles an hour, and red means heavy traffic----cars standing still or moving less than thirty miles an hour.

“See that red light near Austin Avenue?” the controller asked a visitor. “That’s a repair truck fixing the road, and the traffic has to go around it.”

At the Roosevelt Road entrance to the expressway, the light kept changing from green to red and back to green again. “A lot of trucks get on the expressway there,” the controller explained. “They can’t speed up as fast as cars.”

The sensors show immediately where an accident or a stopped car is blocking traffic, and a truck is sent by radio to clear the road. The system has lowered the number of accidents by l8 percent. There are now 1.4 deaths on Chicago's expressways for each one hundred million miles traveled, while in other parts of the country there are 2.6.

Traffic experts say that the Chicago system is the “coming thing”. Systems like Chicago's are already in use on some expressways in Los Angeles and Houston. “Chicago has taken the lead,” says New York City’s traffic director; and he adds, “We are far behind...!”

68. Why did the controller ask the visitor?

A. He wanted to tell him how the lights work.

B. He cited it as an example to show the visitor what the lights tell.

C. He showed the visitor what he did.

D. He was teaching him how to control the system.

69. Where is the passage most probably taken from?

A. A science book

B. A travel journal.

C. A magazine

D. A student text

70.What’ the main idea of the passage?

A. A computerized traffic control system greatly helps in Chicago.

B. Rush periods in Chicago are getting longer.

C. Chicago has the busiest road in the nation.

D. The expressways are faster now.

71.What can we learn from the passage?

A. The controller follows Chicago's traffic by waiting for the red light to turn to green.

B. The sensor can immediately deal with the accidents.

C. The system has greatly helped to reduce the deaths on the expressways.

D. At the entrance to the expressway, the lights can only change because of the

speed of the truck.

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Being a Good Listener”.

Good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.

Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.

What I want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. Show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them. In a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.

Thank you for your listening!

Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
