阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

On the first day of my school life in the USA, I showed a great interest in my marketing class. My teacher, Mrs. Tolman, suggested me joining a national marketing club called DECA attracting many students with talent and interest in business. So I did.

The first challenge was to raise money for the marketing competition later in the year by selling candles. Mrs. Tolman said the competition was due in a week and that 40 percent of the income would go into my personal account.

At the beginning, I tried to sell some candles to my host mom. She said that if I

could show confidence and do a wonderful sales presentation, she would certainly buy some. I started my presentation with a firm handshake. Then I introduced all the different kinds of candles and the special sales I could offer and convinced her that our candles were the best choices for gifts and home decorations. Finally she bought three candles.

Greatly encouraged I decided to sell my candles around the neighborhood.

On Saturday morning, with great courage, I knocked at the door of my first potential buyer.

"I’m a student at Skyline High School and we are raising money for DECA. I’m trying to sell..."

"Not today, sorry." the man interrupted me and shut the door.

Embarrassed, I walked away and said to myself the worst thing that might happen was being refused like that again. However, I had to continue with the day. Finally a woman kindly bought nearly $ 60 worth of candles. I couldn’t even hide my happiness and said "Thank you very much" to her with a bow.

After a week’s hard work, I turned in my $408 worth of sales of candles, which gave me $163 in my own account. I was surprised to find out I was the second highest seller in all classes.

It was the first time that I had worked as a sales person. This experience let me know that worrying about difficulties was only wasting time and a barrier in my way to success.

21.What does the passage mainly talk about? ______

A.The author’s first part-time job in the USA.

B. The author’s experience of acting as a saleswoman.

C. The author’s experience after graduation.

D. The author’s skills in promoting different kinds of candles.

22.If the author got $550 worth of sales of candles, how much should go into her personal account?

A. $220

B. $250

C. $320

D. $330

23. Selling candles to her host mom _____.

A. let her earn a lot of money

B. was good practice and built up her confidence

C. was really easy because they had got on really well

D. didn’t take much persuasion because she happened to need some

The latest fashion in kitchen is the food steamer. All the stores are selling them; everyone wants one. Steaming is one of the simplest and healthiest ways of cooking food. However, that cooking time is usually longer than with other methods. In case you’re thinking of buying a steamer, I've done a survey about the steamers available on the market to help you decide which will suit you best.

●Folding Steamer

The simplest and least expensive is the folding stainless-steel(不锈钢)version.

Advantages: This is a good, basic design which sits inside a variety of different shapes of pans with the water under it; a ring in the center allows for easy lifting and it's easy to clean.Disadvantages: It only holds small dishes. Also, if you put too much water in the pan, it will boil up through the vegetables and they will be watery. If you put too little water in and let it get dry, you will burn the pan and get strange-smelling vegetables.

●Steaming Pan

This is a three-layered black Teflon-coated version with a lid and two double-handled steamers, which sits on the oven ring. The brand I bought is called Nutritious Living.Advantages: This is an excellent steamer, lightweight, easy to clean, and of all the steamers I've tried, this cooks the fastest. Fish and chicken can be cooked on the bottom with rice or vegetables on the top. It's easier to store.

Disadvantages: Water can boil away until the pan is dry, but if you make sure you fill the pan up to the suggested level and do not overcook the food, this should not happen. You cannot see the food cooking from the top. It doesn't supply a dish for cooking rice.

For serious users of steamers, I recommend having one of each version. If you just want to try it, get the folding stainless-steel type.

25.Why did the author carry out the survey? _____

A.To inform people of different steamers

B.To run an advertisement for steamers

C.To find out a suitable steamer to buy

D.To learn how to cook with steamers

26.What can we learn about the folding steamer? _____.

A.It comes in different kinds of shapes and sizes.

B.It is designed for large families.

C.It is able to clean itself.

D.It is easy to take out.

27.The Nutritious Living steamer _____.

A.is more difficult to store

B.provides a dish to cook rice with

C.cooks different foods at the same time

D.cooks fish and chicken faster than vegetables

C

A dog’s tail can tell you a lot more than you might think. Is it wagging (摇) to the left or is it wagging to the right?

“The direction of tail wagging does in fact matter,” said Giorgio Vallortigara, a professor at the University of Trento in Italy. Professor Vallortigara finds that the way the tail is wagging can tell you a lot about a dog’s state of mind—whether you’re a human or another dog.

What’s the di fference between a left wag and a right wag?Professor Vallortigara and his colleagues have studied 43 dogs of various breeds -- German Shepherds,Beagles,Boxers,Border Collies and some mutts. They find that if a dog wags its tail to the left. It’s feeling a nxious or nervous. The reason could be an unfamiliar or dangerous situation,an unfamiliar person,or an unfamiliar and possibly threatening dog. But if the tail is wagging to the right,it means the dog is feeling relaxed and approachable.

“The tail is a very important signal,” said Thomas Reimchen, a biologist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. “There is a lot of visual information that dogs use when communicating with each other.”

How did the scientists figure all this information out? They had the dogs in their study watch videotapes of other dogs. When the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the right, they say the other dogs remained calm and cool. But when the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the left, the other dogs got anxious.

The researchers are still not exactly sure if the direction of tail wagging is something the dog does consciously. They suspect that it might be something the dog does without even thinking about it — kind of like when you get goose bumps if something scares or startles you. They plan to do more research to get more information about what dogs are thinking and feeling while they’re wagging. As Reimchen said,“I'm not going to be surprised if we find all sorts of really interesting processes that n obody has ever seen before. ”

28. Professor Vallortigara’s study focused on the relationship between _______.

A. a dog’s state of mind and its owner's feeling

B. a dog’s state of mind and the direction of its tail wagging

C. a dog’s sense of direction and its state of mind

D. a dog’s intention of tail wagging and its feeling

29. According to the study, dogs which wag their tails to the left may feel _______.

A. calm

B. happy

C. angry

D. nervous

30. It is implied in Thomas Reimchen’s words in Paragraph 4 that ________.

A. dogs’ tails play an important role in their growth

B. dogs show their feelings only by wagging their tails

C. dogs get to know others by watching tail wagging

D. dogs can understand each other by repeating tail wagging

31. How does the passage mainly develop?

A. By making comparisons

B. By asking and analyzing questions

C. By following the order of time

D. By providing examples

D

A new TV ad for a brand of electronic cigarettes marks the first time in decades cigarettes of any sort have been promoted on US television. Anti-smoking campaigners fear the rapid growth of tobacco-free cigarettes could undermine years of successful anti-smoking efforts.

Most living Americans had never before seen a cigarette advertised on television - they were banned in 1971. But the electronic cigarettes fall outside that law, since they contain no tobacco.

"We know that smoke-free laws encourage smokers to try to quit," says Danny McGoldrick, vice-president of research at Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. If electronic cigarettes keep people smoking who would otherwise quit, that is harmful, he says.

Electronic cigarettes are either banned or heavily regulated in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany and several other countries. But in the US, at present electronic cigarettes are unregulated.

"It feels like what they're trying to do is re-establish a norm(准则) that smoking is okay, that smoking is attractive and acceptable," says Cynthia Hallett, executive director of Americans for Non-Smokers' Rights. “This time around, instead of disobeying parents and teachers, the ad encourages smokers to rebel against more recent anti-smoking social norms.”

Electronic cigarettes are sold in a variety of flavours. “Much research has shown flavoured tobacco appeals to young smokers and adolescents who are not ready for standard cigarettes,” says Joseph Cappella, a professor of communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

Anti-tobacco campaigners say they're keeping an open mind about electronic cigarettes. "We are not against them being on the market but they should be responsibly regulated and marketed and tracked over time in a way that protects the public health and fully informs consumers of their effects." says David Abrams, executive director of the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies at Legacy.

32. The underlined word “undermine” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.

A.strengthen

B. build

C. protect

D. weaken

33. What do we know about the advertising of electronic cigarettes in the US? _____

A.It is not allowed by law.

B. It was once banned in 1971.

C. It has attracted widespread criticism.

D. It’s popular among adolescents.

34. Danny McGoldrick agrees that ____.

A. the government should take control of electronic cigarettes

B. smokers may become addicted to electronic cigarettes

C. flavoured tobacco attracts non-smokers to smoking

D. there should be a law against electronic cigarettes

35. We can infer from David Abr ams’ words that _____.

A. Electronic cigarettes should be carefully monitored.

B. Electronic cigarettes are harmful to the public health

C. Consumers should watch out for electronic cigarettes

D. Governments should prevent electronic cigarettes coming into the market

Apart from kept a young boy entertained, she taught me a large number of important thing on how to behave. I was rather impatient when I was a child and she taught me that good things happened if I could wait for it. She was a positive person but she also taught me how to look for the good in everything.

One possible version

Recently our class had a series of activities to show love to those in need.

Some of us went to see the elderly in the nursing home. They did what they could to help them, cleaned the house and did some washing for them. At the same time, they raised money to buy things like food and clothes for these old people. In order to respond to the Students’ Union, some of us sent books or dictionaries to some poor children. And to their credit, some volunteered to help those students who fell behind others in their studies.

I was greatly impressed by these activities. It’s a good way to pass love on. I’m determined to take part in activities. Love and care are needed in the daily life. Sometimes a small act can make a difference.

What’s cooking? Nothing! Nothing’s on the stove. Nothing’s in the oven. Almost no one has time to cook anymore. Both women and men work. Parents are spending time with their kids. Senior citizens are out playing golf, and teenagers are always busy.

Everybody needs to eat, but meals need to be quick and easy! So what do we do? Nearly 80% of people in the United States buy take-out food at least once a month. Many people buy it every day. Most of us are in a hurry so we get fast food like pizza or hamburgers. We often eat in our cars. But some of us are tired of eating fast food. We want to eat dinner at home with our families and friends. We want food that tastes like home cooking. We’re hungry for healthy meals with main dishes like fish, roast beef, or pasta and side dishes like rice, potatoes, or steamed vegetables. And sometimes we want dessert like cake, pie, or cookies. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem.

Just use your computer to look up food businesses on the Internet, https://www.doczj.com/doc/c87089563.html, will show you a list of restaurants in your neighborhood. You can also see the menus. Type the name of the restaurant and the meal you want on the Web page. Your dinner can be ready in an hour. You can also order dinner for next week or next month. The restaurant will deliver your meal to your home or business, or you can pick it up.

Now you don’t need to cook to get a go od, hot meal. All you need is a computer ... and a good appetite!
