With more and more cars on the road, the traffic jam will happen. How do we see it and how can we solve the problem?
We know that the traffic jam(堵塞)happens in many places, especially in big cities. What are reasons for the problem? On one hand, some people think that they should have a car when they have enough money, and then it's easy to go out and they can feel comfortable. On the other hand, a growing number of people hope to use their cars to show off (炫耀). What's more, years of research has shown that one of other reasons for the traffic jam is the driving habit. For example, many young people enjoy driving very fast, so they can feel excited. At last, most of them hardly care about the speed rules.
Many governments are working at how to make the traffic better. In my opinion, firstly, the governments should educate those people who have cars or plan to buy cars. The governments must make them know that the traffic jam is very serious, and set up a much more perfect traffic system (体系) to solve the traffic pressure.
41. Why is the traffic jam getting more and more serious?
A. Because there are not enough ways of transportation (交通方式).
B. Because there are fewer speed rules.

D. They should hardly care about the speed rules.
44. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Reasons why people want to buy cars.
B. How drivers should drive.
C. The traffic jam, reasons for it and solutions.
D. Many young people enjoy driving very fast, so they can feel excited.
B
Many people say that they are working too many hours. They don't have enough time to relax or to stay with their family.
Work hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. That means a Japanese worker works 513 more hours a year than a French worker.
Why do people work so many hours? Some people work extra hours because they want to make more money. However, many companies don't pay overtime. Their workers don't get more pay for more work. Some people think it's their duty to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don't work more hours.
Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers used all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy." If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.
45. A Japanese worker works __ more hours a year than a French one.
A. 513
B. 1,646
C. 2,159
D. 3,805

How green are you? Do you know how to be green?
We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.
Reduce
Reduce means “use less”. Don’t waste things. This saves mon ey and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary—or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.
Reuse
Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don’t use a paper cup of a paper bag. It’s better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
Recycle
Recycle means “change things into something else”. Though it takes energy to change something into some thing else, it’s better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and take part in recycling programs. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.
So please remember these three words: reduce, reuse and recycle.
49. What is the passage about?
A. How to produce things.
B. How to burn things.
C. How to help others.
D. How to be green.

A. D on’t waste things.
B. Always throw away old things.

D. Buy too many things from abroad.

A. a menu
B. a dictionary
C. a storybook

Different gestures (手势) mean different things in different countries. Sometimes a gesture that is polite in one country is not polite in another and should not be used. Different meanings of gestures can also cause problems in understanding what another person is trying to say. A gesture that many people do not understand is one that uses the thumb. Most westerners will sometimes show that they like something by holding out a closed hand with the thumb lifting in the air. This is called give someone or something “the thumbs up”. Often, only one thumb is used, so it should be “the thumb up”.
The usual explanation (解释) for the origin of this gesture is not really correct. It says that in ancient Roman times, when people were pleased with the way a gladiator (角斗士) had fought, they showed their thumbs up. When they were not pleased, they gave the thumbs down. When a gladiator was given the thumbs(拇指)up, the emperor allowed him to live. When a gladiator was given the thumbs down, the emperor ordered him to be killed.
The truth is, however, it was translated into a wrong meaning by mistake. If people wanted to save the gladiator, they put out their hands and hid their thumbs in their hands. If they wanted the gladiator to die, they pointed their thumbs straight at him.
53. Westerners lift their thumbs when they ________.
A. want someone to die
B. like something
C. want to go to a playground
D. want someone to live
54. Most people think that in ancient Rome, “thumbs up” meant that ________.

B. the people wanted the gladiator to live
C. the fighting could continue
D. the people were not pleased
55. In fact, if people wanted a gladiator to live, they ________.
A. hid their thumbs
B. pointed their thumbs down
C. lifted their thumbs up
D. pointed their thumbs at him
56. From the article we know that ________.
A. different gestures have different meanings in different countries
B. a friendly gesture is always the same in different countries
C. the meaning of “thumbs up” is the same both now and the past
D. we should often use the thumbs
57. The main idea of this article is about ________.
A. gestures around the world
B. closed thumbs
C. gestures in ancient Rome

I'm a middle school student. We know now there are many left-behind children whose parents work away from their hometown. These children are facing many problems now. It is easy for them to feel lonely and they also have some trouble making friends with others sometimes. They also need help with their study. Most of them are looked after by their grandparents. They are not strict with their grandchildren. I think we should plan a volunteer project to help them. And we can give away our money and clothes to them. We should care more about them. And their parents should return to their children as often as possible.
It’s really important to do something for left behind children if we want to build a better society.。
