A (故事,主旨,推断)

Knowing that Louise Mallard had heart trouble, care was taken to tell her the news of her husband’s death.

It was her sister, Josephine, who told her. Her husband Richard had been in the newspaper office when the news of the railway accident was received, with Brent Mallard’s name leading the list of “killed”.

On hearing the news Louise cried at once in her sister’s arms. When her tears ended she went to her room alone. She would have no one follow her. She sank into the comfortable armchair that faced the open window, as if she was pressed down by a sadness that seemed to reach into her soul.

From the window she could see the tops of trees and new green spring life. The delicious smell of rain was in the air. Some blue sky could be seen through the clouds. She was young, with a fair, calm and intelligent face. But now there was an empty look in her eyes, as she dully stared out at the sky.

Fearing for her sister, Josephine came to the door and begged Louise to come out. Finally she opened the door. She held her sister’s waist and together they came down the stairs. Richard stood waiting for them at the bottom.

Suddenly there was the sound of someone opening the front door. Brent Mallard entered. He had been far from the accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood in shock as Louise let out a scream.

When the doctor came, he said Louise Mallard had died of a heart attack.

D (特殊文体:演讲稿,猜词,推断)

He says the problem with teachers is, “What will a kid learn from someone who chose to become a teacher?” He reminds the other dinner guests that it’s true what they say about teachers: Those who can, do; those who can’t teach.

I decide to bite my tongue instead of biting his and stop myself from reminding the other dinner guests that it’s also true what they say about lawyers—that they make money from the misfortune of others.

“I mean, you’re a teacher, Taylor,” he says to me. “Be honest. What do you make?”

I wish he hadn’t asked me to be honest, because now I have to teach him a lesson.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could.

I can make a C+ feel like a great achievement and an A- feel like a failure.

How dare you waste my time with anything less than your very best?

I make parents tremble in fear when I call them:

I hope I haven’t called at a bad time,

I just wanted to talk to you about something Billy said today.

Billy said, “Leave the kid alone. I still cry sometimes, don’t you?”

And it was the bravest act I have ever seen.

I make parents see their children for who they are and what they can be.

You want to know what I make?

I make kids wonder.

I make them question.

I make them criticize.

I make them think.

I make them apologies and mean it.

I make them write, write, write.

And then I make them read.

I teach them to solve math problems that they once thought impossible.

I make them understand that if you have brains then you follow your heart, and if someone ever

tries to judge you by what you make, you teach them a lesson.

Let me make this simple for you, so you know what I say is true;

I make a great difference! What about you?

A (普通记叙,猜词,推断)

A black and white kitten with a broken back lay on animal doctor Betsy Knenon's examination table. A regular customer had rushed him to her office after his pet dog brought the cat home in his mouth. The dog's owner was horrified, believing that his pet had caused the cat's injuries. But Kennon found no teeth marks or bite wounds, which showed that the dog had probably saved, not harmed, the kitten.

In Kennon’s opinion, however, the cat was a hopeless case. Many doctors would have put down such a badly hur t animal. But she couldn’t be so cruel. The kitten’s bright eyes and sad face had won her over. There was no way of finding his owner, so Kennon, a single woman aged 56, decided to keep him.

She gave him a round of shots and fed him food mixed with medicin es. He couldn’t move his back legs but soon started pulling himself forward with his front legs. The doctor named him Scooter and contacted a company that makes carts for disabled animals. Scooter took to his new wheels like a natural. In no time he was able to move freely, if somewhat awkwardly, around Kennon’s office, home and even her backyard. The sight of the determined Scooter was uplifting and amusing in equal measure and Kennon had to smile each time the cat entered the room.

Kennon was convinced that her kitten could share his high spirits with others. So she took Scooter to the local hospital to see if he could help the patients. His first patient was an elderly woman who’d had a stroke and hadn’t spoken to anyone for two days. Scooter jumped out o f Kennon’s arms and onto the bed, rolled over to the patient, and lay gently near her cheek, purring softly. The woman looked at Scooter. “Kitty,” she murmured as she began to talk to him. Amazed, Kennon turned

to the doctor---and saw that she was in tears. The cat had engineered a small miracle.

Today Scooter spends about ten hours a month working with patients who are recovering from strokes and injuries. Again and again, Kennon watches as her cat provides hope and comfort. As one patient who’d lost her leg in a car accident said, “If he can do it, so can I.”

27. The underlined phrase “put down” in Paragraph 2 most probably means___________.

D. The cat was hopeless.

30. According to the passage, what is the main reason that the cat works miracle?

A. He is able to inspire others.

B. Patients feel sympathy for him.

C. People are amused by his appearance.

D. He has the ability to cure the ill.

A boy of 12 was expelled from school for pulling two legs off a daddy-long-legs, his mother claimed.

Wendy Parker said son Christopher was sent home after killing a crane fly which he found in the playground during lunch break.

But Beauminster School in Dorset disputes her story, saying the incident was the straw that broke the camel’s back after a series of behavior problems involving Miss Parker, 40, Weymouth, said, “It is pathetic. They called me to say they were sending Christopher home because he wasn’t doing as he was told and had pulled the legs off a spider. What child hasn’t done that before? It’s all part of growing up. What sort of society are we bringing our kids into when they are punished for something as trivial as that?”

Miss Parker admits Christopher can sometimes be naughty because he is a special needs pupil with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

She added, “I know he does not do what he is told a lot of the time but so do a lot of kids. He is on medication and the school should know to control him.”

Headmaster Mike Best denied that Christopher was expelled. He said that Miss Parker had agreed that because of her son’s behavior problems, it was best to take him out of mainstream education and enroll him in a part-time learning centre.

Dorset council has enrolled Christopher in a centre while it finds him a place at another school.

A spokeswoman said: “We are carefully monitoring his progress with the aim of enrolling him as soon as possible.”

41. Which animal didn’t Christopher kill at school according to the report?

A. A daddy-long-legs.

A. indifference to the boy

The designer’s job isn’t to invent something 12 , but to communicate something that already exists, for a purpose.
