I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car in a freight yard(货场) in Atlantic City and landing on my head. Now I am thirty-two. I can slightly remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity(灾难) can do strange things to people. It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind.I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply,

I was totally confused and afraid. But I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me—a potential to live, you might call it—which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.

The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn’t been able to do that, I would have collapsed(崩溃) and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, intricate(错综复杂的) pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.

It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the simplest things. Once a man gave me an indoor baseball.

I thought he was making fun of me and I was hurt. “I can’t use this.”

I said. “Take it with you,” he urged me,“roll it around.” The words stuck in my head. “Roll it around!” By rolling the ball I could hear where it went. This gave me an idea how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. At Philadelphia’s Overbrook School for the Blind I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it ground ball.

All my life I have set ahead of me a series of goals and then tried to reach them, one at a time. I had to learn my limitations. It was no

good trying for something that I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.

Lightning flashed through the darkness over Donald Lubeck’s bedroom skylight. The 80-year-old retired worker was shaken by a blast of thunder.

It was 11 p.m. The storm had moved directly over his two-story wood home in the rural town of Belchertown, Massachusetts. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping. Lubeck padded down the stairs barefoot and opened the door to the basement, and flames exploded out.

Lubeck fled back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom, but the phone didn’t work.Lubeck realized he was trapped.“ I started panicking(恐慌),” he says.

His daughter and young granddaughters, who lived with him, were away for the night. “No one will even know I’m home,”he thought. His house was three miles off the main road and so well hidden by pines that Lubeck knew calling for help would be fruitless.

Up a hill about a third of a mile away lived Lubeck’s closest neighbors, Jeremie Wentworth and his wife. Wentworth had been lying down, listening to the radio when it occurred to him that the sound was more like a smoke detector. He jumped out of bed, grabbed a cordless phone and a flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the noise.

He dialed 911 “Is anyone there?” he call ed out as he approached the house. Wentworth knew that Lubeck lived in the house.

Then he heard, “Help me! I’m trapped!” coming from the balcony off Lubeck’s bedroom.

“I ran in and yelled, ‘Don,where are you?’ Then I had to run outside to catch my breath.”

After one more attempt inside the house, he gave up and circled around back. But there was no way to get to him. “I shone the flashlight into the woods next to an old shed and noticed a ladder,” says Wentworth. He dragged it over to the balcony and pulled Lubeck down just as the second floor of the house collapsed.

Wentworth and Lubeck don’t run into each other regularly,but Lubeck now knows that if he ever needs help, Wentworth will be there.

Lubeck still chokes up when he tells the story. “I was alone,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life.It was Jeremie.”

On the other hand,students’ expectations have risen.They are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation,as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own countries.

To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to make living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private bathrooms, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. 中学班主任工作暂行规定(摘要) 第一章班主任的地位和作用 第一条班级是学校进行教育、教学工作的基本单位。班主任是班集体的组织者、教育者和指导者,是学校领导者实施教育、教学工作计划的得力助手。班主任在学生全面健康的成长中,起着导师的作用;并负有协调本班各科的教育工作和沟通学校与家庭、社会教育之间联系的作用。 第二章班主任的任务和职责 第二条班主任的基本任务是按照德、智、体、美全面发展的要求,开展班级工作,全面教育、管理、指导学生,使他们成为有理想、有道德、有文化、有纪律、体魄健康的公民。 第三条班主任的职责是: (一)向学生进行思想政治教育和道德教育,保护学生身心健康,教育学生热爱社会主义祖国,逐步树立为人民服务的思想和为实现社会主义现代化而奋斗的志向,培养社会主义道德品质和良好的心理品质,遵守《中学生守则》和《中学生日常行为规范》。 (二)教育学生努力完成学习任务。会同各科教师教育、帮助学生明确学习目的,端正学习态度,掌握正确的学习方法,提高学习成绩。 (三)教育、指导学生参加学校规定的各种劳动,协助学校贯彻实施《体育卫生工作条例》,教育学生坚持体育锻炼,养成良好的劳动习惯、生活习惯和卫生习惯。 (四)关心学生课外生活。指导学生参加各种有益于身心健康的科技、文娱和社会活动。鼓励学生发展正当的兴趣和特长。 (五)进行班级的日常管理。建立班级常规,指导班委会和本班的团、队工作,培养学生干部,提高学生的自理能力,把班级建设成为奋发向上、团结友爱的集体。 (六)负责联系和组织科任教师商讨本班的教育工作,互通情况,协调各种活动和课业负担。 (七)做好本班学生思想品德评定和有关奖惩的工作。 (八)联系本班学生家长,争取家长和社会有关方面配合,共同做好学生教育工作。 第三章班主任工作的原则和方法 第四条调查研究、全面了解学生。要从学生特点和思想实际出发,进行工作和教育活动。讲求思想教育工作的科学性、针对性、实效性。 第五条正面教育、积极引导。寓教育于活动和管理之中。要表扬先进,树立榜样,充分调动积极因素。对学生的思想认识问题不要简单地批评压制,要循循善诱,以理服人。要引导学生进行自我教育,发扬学生的主动精神和创造精神。 第六条热爱学生、尊重学生。对学生严格要求,耐心帮助,热情关怀。要努力做好后进学生的转化工作。工作中发扬民主作风。严禁体罚、变相体罚和侮辱学生人格。注意发挥集体的教育作用,在进行集体教育的同时注意培养学生良好的个性品质。 第七条以身作则、言传身教。衣着整洁,仪表端庄。在思想、道德、文明行为等方面努力成为学生的表率。
