That the octopus(章鱼)is known as a human- killer is a total myth(虚构). The octopus can be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural victims(牺牲品). Some shellfish and fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed hunter, but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even the largest among octopi is much smaller than most people's imagination. Far from being large enough to swallow(吞)a ship, as octopi in movies have been known to do, the largest octopus, found on the Pacific coast, weighs around 110 pounds and grows to no more than ten feet in width.

The hard, parrot- like beak(喙)of an octopus is not used for attacking deep- sea divers but for cutting open shellfish. In fact, the octopus has such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. Instead, it feeds by pouring digestive juices(消化液)into its victims, and then sucking(吸)up the soupy remains. A shellfish that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe.Still, people rarely care to go close enough to these careful creatures to get a good look at them.

1.This passage is mainly about ________.

A.the horrors of the octopus B.the largest octopus in the world

C.octopi and their behavior D.the octopus's deadly hunting method 2.What does the underlined part "careful creatures" refer to in the last paragraph?

A.Octopi B.Shellfish C.Fish D.The victims 3.The hard beak of the octopus is used for ________.

A.attacking deep-sea divers B.cutting up large pieces of meat

C.cutting open its victims D.defending itself

4.From the passage, we can conclude that ________.

A.the octopus is not dangerous to man at all

B.people often fear creatures that are not dangerous to them

C.the octopus only hunts its natural victims

D.things described in movies are not to be believed

Every dog has his say

Read the following passage and then choose the most suitable heading from this list for each

1.________________________

Kimiko Fukuda always wanted to know what her dog was trying to say. Whenever she put on makeup, it would pull at her sleeve. Now, the Japanese girl thinks she knows. When the dog

barks(狗吠), she glances at a small electronic gadget(小配件).The following "human" translation appears on its screen: "Please take me with you."

2.________________________

The gadget is called Bowlingual, which translates dog barks into feelings. People laughed when the Japanese toymaker Takara Company made the world's first dog- human translation machine in 2002, but 300,000 Japanese dog owners bought it."Nobody else had thought about it," said Masahiko Kajita, who works for Takara, "We spend so much time training dogs to understand our orders; what would it be like if we could understand dogs?"

3.________________________

Bowlingual, one of US Time magazine's 42 coolest inventions of 2002, has two parts. A wireless microphone is attached(附上)to the dog's collar, which sends information to the gadget held by the owner. The translation is done in the gadget using a database(数据)containing(包括)every kind of bark.

4.________________________

Based on animal behavior research, these noises are divided into six kinds: happiness, sadness, frustration(受挫), anger, declaration(表白)and desire. Each kind is linked to a phrase like "Let's play.", "Look at me." or "Spend more time with me." In this way, the database matches a bark to an emotion(情感), which is then translated into one of 200 phrases. When a visitor went to Fukuda's house recently, the dog barked aloud "bow wow." This translated as "Don't come this way". It was followed by "I' m stronger than you" as the dog barks at the visitor.

5.________________________

However, the translations are never completely accurate."We can't say it's 100 percent right,” said Yoko Watanabe of Takara. "You can't really understand how a dog feels unless you become one yourself."

It is difficult for doctors to help a person with a damaged brain. Without enough blood, the brain lives for only three to five minutes. More often the doctors can't fix the damage. Sometimes they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.

Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.

Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys' blood back to the monkeys' brains. When the brain's temperature was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal.I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work.As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of

orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面团)covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing.Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot run had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast(酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being from outer space.I could see why Doug was so shaken.I had to admit what the 'living thing' was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed(尴尬)by the whole thing — Doug or me.

Ah, good old Bull Riding. This rodeo sport involves riders trying to stay on the large animal for at least 8 seconds without being bucked off. If you can't tell by the image, it is very risky and riders are well trained before they even attempt this.

Kite Jumping

Although it looks like a lot of fun, kite jumping is actually extremely dangerous. It is similar to power kiting but with this you simple jump into the air for brief periods of time and allow the wind to drag you along. The most difficult part about kite jumping(and the most dangerous)is actually in the landing which is said to be hard to control.

A

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005.While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he

usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport.Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.

I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so.This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.

1.Why was the bike so important to the couple?

A.The man's job was bike racing.B.It was their only possession.

C.It was a nice Kona 18 speed.D.They used it for work and daily life. 2.What can we infer from the text?

A.The couple worked 60 hours a week.B.People were busy before Christmas.

C.The stranger brought over the bike.D.Life was hard for the young family. 3.How did people get to know the couple's problem?

A.From radio broadcasts.B.From a newspaper.

C.From TV news. D.From a stranger.

4.What do the couple learn from their experience?

A.Strangers are usually of little help.B.One should take care of one's bike.

C.News reports make people famous.D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.

Host family accommodation, or living with host families, remains popular among language travel students for its advantages. These days, host families are trying to offer more in terms of quality, for they still have something to worry about.

Host family accommodation is often seen as the number-one choice for its advantages in language study, cultural communication and cost of living.Staying alongside host families enables students to get enough practice for the short time of their studying so that their language acquisition is likely to become faster. Living in host families also has the advantage for students of being able to spend a lot of time communicating with their “host parents”, and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. Another advantage is that host family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. It attracts students, for it ensures them a family type of living at a low cost.

The advantages, however, have not prevented host families from worrying. On one hand, some host families are losing their unique selling point. The problem is that the majority of hosts in big cites, now generally single and young, have less time available for students but the selling point for host family accommodation is communication practice. On the other hand, students' expectations have risen. They are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own

countries.

To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to make living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private bathroom, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They are also providing students with structured family activities.

It is believed that host family accommodation will keep the popularity vote with language travel students.

七、书面表达

请根据以下阅读材料和写作要求,写一篇短文。

What are the riskiest sports you can do? Well.If you thought of "dangerous sports" like hang-gliding, parachuting, or scuba-diving, you'd be wrong, because they're not, in fact, that dangerous.Of course, people do get hurt in "adventure sports" and the most dangerous is climbing, which kills eight people a year. But it is not obvious which activities are dangerous. For instance, two people die every year in hang-gliding accidents, but the same number are killed by badminton, whereas six people a year die in fishing accidents! So "exciting" isn't always the same as "dangerous". This is even more true when you consider the activities of everyday life. Many more people die due to accidents in the home than from sports of any kinds. Why? The major reason is safety always goes with danger.

写作要求:

1.通过阅读,认真理解其主要观点及内容;

2.以“Are adventure sports dangerous or not?”为题,写一篇短文,并说明其原因

.....;

3.可参照阅读材料的篇章结构,但尽量不直接引用原文中的句子。
