ARCHITECTURE -Reaching for the sky

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. A build ing reflects the scientific and tech no logical achievements of the age as well as the ideas and aspirations of the designer and client. The appeara nee

of individual build in gs, however, is often controversial.

The use of an architectural style cannot be said to start or finish on a specific date? Neither is it possible to say exactly what

characterises a particular movement. But the origins of what is now generally known as modern architecture can be traced back to the social and technological changes of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Instead of using timber, stone and traditional building techniques, architects began to explore ways of creating buildings by using the latest tech no logy and materials such as steel, glass and concrete st re ngthened steel bars, known as reinforced concrete. Technological advances also helped bring about the decline of rural industries and an increase in urban populations as people moved to the towns to work in the new factories. Such rapid and uncontrolled growth helped to turn parts of cities into slums.

By the 1920s architects throughout Europe were reacting against the conditions created by industrialisation. A new style of architecture emerged to reflect more idealistic notions for the future. It was made possible by new materials and construction techniques and was known as Moder nism.

By the 1930s many buildings emerging from this movement were designed in the I nternational Style. This was largely characterised by the bold use of new materials and simple, geometric forms, often with white walls supported by stilt-like pillars? These were stripped of unnecessary decoration that would detract from their primary purpose一to be used or lived in.

Water Gropius, Charles Jeanneret (better known as Le Corbusier) and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe were among the most influential of the many architects who contributed to the development of Modernism in the first half of the century. But the economic depression of the 1 930s and the second world war

(1939-45) prevented their ideas from being widely realized until the economic

conditions improved and wartorn cities had to be rebuilt. By the 1 950s, the I nternational Style had developed into a universal approach to building, which standardized the appearance of new buildings in cities across the world?Unfortunately, this Modernist interest in geometric simplicity and function became exploited for profit? The rediscovery of quick-and-easy-to-handle reinforced concrete and an improved ability to prefabricate building sections meant that builders could meet the budgets of commissioning authorities and handle a renewed dema nd for development quickly and cheaply. But this led to many badly designed buildings, which discredited the original aims of Modernism.

Influenced by Le Corbusier's ideas on town planning, every large British city built multi-storey housing estates in the 1 960s. Mass-produced, low-cost high-rises seemed to offer a solution to the problem of housing a growing inner-city population. But far from meeting human needs, the new estates often proved to be windswept deserts lacking essential social facilities and services? Many of these buildings were poorly designed and constructed and have since been demolished?

By the 1 970s, a new respect for the place of buildings within the existing towenscape arose. Preserving historic buildings or keeping only their facades (or fronts) grew commoru Architects also began to make more use of building styles and materials that were traditional to the area? The architectural style usually referred to as High-Tech was also emerging? It celebrated scientific and engineering achievements by openly parading the sophisticated techniques used in construction. Such buildings are

commonly made of metal and glass; examples are Stansted airport and the Lloyd's building in London. Disillusionment at the failure of many of the poor imitations of Modernist

architecture led to interest in various styles and ideas from the past and present? By the 1 980s the co-existenee of different styles of architecture in the same building became known as Post-Modern. Other architects looked back to the classical tradition. The trend in architecture now favours smaller scale building design that reflects a growing public awareness of environmental issues such as energy efficiency. Like the Modernists, people today recognize that a well designed environment improves the quality of life but is not necessarily achieved by adopting one well defined style of architecture.

Twentieth century architecture will mainly be remembered for its tall buildings. They have been made possible by the development of light steel frames and safe passenger lifts. They originated in the US over a century ago to help meet the demand for more economical use of land? As construction techniques improved, the skyscraper became a reality.

SECTI ON B Multiple Choice Questions (1 5 points / 1 point each) Directions: Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the following questions. Put your answers A, B, C, or D in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet.

Passage One

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable occupations? Personal consultants give them better advice for finding jobs? Even judges are softer on attractive defendants? But

in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman. Handsome male executives were perceived as having more integrity than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to account for their success. Attractive female executives were considered to have less integrity than unattractive ones; their success was attributed not to ability but to factors such as luck? All unattractive women executives were thought to have more integrity and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive over night successes was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than was that of attractive overnight successes. Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is perceived to be more feminine and an attractive man more masculine than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally masculine positions appears to lack the "masculine” qualities required ?

This is true even in politics?"When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently/5 says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates?

She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The stude nts were told the photographs were of can didates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them. The results showed that attractive males utterly defeated unattractive men, but the women who had been ranked most attractive in variably received

the fewest votes.

3. Bowman's experiment reveals that when it comes to politics, attractiveness一_________ .

A. turns out to be an obstacle to men

B. affects men and women alike

C. has as little effect on men as on women

D. is more of an obstacle than a benefit to women

4. It can be inferred from the passage that people's views on beauty are often __________ .

A. practical B? prejudiced C? old-fashioned D? radical

5. The author writes this passage to ___________ .

Passage Two

There were two widely divergent influences on the early development of

statistical methods? Statistics had a mother who was dedicated to keeping orderly records of governmental units (state and statistics come from the same Latin root, status) and a

gentlemanly gambling father who relied on mathematics to increase his skill at playing the odds in games of chance? The influence of the mother on the offspring, statistics, is represented by counting, measuring, describing, tabulating, ordering, and the taking of censuses 一all of which led to modern descriptive statistics? From the influence of the father came modern inferential statistics, which is based squarely on theories of probability.

Descriptive statistics involves tabulating, depicting, and describing collections of data. These data may be either quantitative, such as measures of height, intelligence, or grade level 一variables that are characterized by an underlying continuum 一or the data may represent qualitative variables, such as sex, college major, or personality type? Large masses of data must generally undergo a process of summarization or reduction before they are comprehensible. Descriptive statistics is a tool for describing or summarizing or reducing to comprehensible form the properties of an otherwise unwieldy mass of data?

Inferential statistics is a formalized body of methods for solving another class of problems that present great difficulties for the unaided human mind. This general class of problems characteristically involves attempts to make predictions using a sample of observations? For example, a school superintendent wishes to determine the proportion of children in a large school system who come to school without breakfast, have been vaccinated for flu, or whatever. Having a little knowledge of statistics, the superintendent would know that it is unnecessary and inefficient to question each child; the proportion for the entire district could be estimated fairly accurately from a

sample of as few as 100 children. Thus, the purpose of inferential statistics is to predict or estimate characteristics of a population from a knowledge of the characteristics of only a sample of the population.

6. With what is the passage mainly concerned?

A. The drawbacks of descriptive and inferential statistics.

B. Applications of inferential statistics.

C? The development and use of statistics

D. How to use descriptive statistics.

7. According to the first paragraph, counting and describing are associated with __________ .

A. inferential statistics

B. descriptive statistics

C? unknown variables D. qualitative changes

8. Why doe s t he author mention the "mother” and “father” in the first paragraph?

A. To point out that parents can teach their children statistics.

B. To introduce inferential statistics.

C? T o explain that there are different kinds of variables.

D. To present the background of statistics in a humorous and understandable way.

9. Which of the following is NOT given as an example of a qualitative variable?

A. Gender.

B. Height C? College major D. Type of personality.

10. According to the passage, what is the purpose of examining a sample of

a population?

A. To compare different groups?

B. To predict characteristics of the entire population.

C. To consider all the quantitative variables?

D. To tabulate collection of data?

Passage Three

I n the fall of 1924 Thomas Wolfe, fresh from his course in playwright at Harvard, joined the eight or ten of us who were teaching English composition in New York University. I had never before seen a man so tall as he, and so ungraceful. I pitied him and went out of my way to help him get adjusted to his work and to make him feel at home.

His students soon let me know that he had no need of my protectiveness? They spoke of his ability to describe a simple eve nt in such a manner as to have them roaring with laughter or struggling to keep back their tears, of his readiness to quote in detail from any poet they could name, of his habit of writing three pages of comment on a student's one-page composition, and of his astonishing ease in expressing in words anything he had seen or heard or tasted or felt.

Indeed, his students made so much of his powers of observation that I decided to make a little test and see for myself. My opportunity came one morning when the students were slowly gathering for nine-o5clock classes?

Upon arriving at the university that day, I found Wolfe alone in the large room which served all the English composition teachers as an office? He made no protest when I asked him to come with me out into the hall, and he only smiled when we reached a classroom door and I told him to enter alone and look around? He stepped in, remained no more than thirty seconds and then

came out. “Tell me what I see/1 I said as I took his place in the room, leaving him in the hall with his back to the door.

Without the least hesitation and without a single error, he gave the number of seats in the room, identified those which were occupied by boys and those occupied by girls, named the colors each student was wearing, pointed out the Latin verb written on the blackboard, spoke of the chalk marks which the cleaner had failed to wash from the floor, and pictured in detail the view of Washington Square from the windows?

As I rejoined Wolfe, I was speechless with amazement. He, on the contrary, was wholly calm as he said, 'The worst thing about it is that I'll remember it all.n
