How do we get more young people to increase their consumption of iron-rich foods? Many nutritionists are advocating the fortification of a number of foods. This may help, but I contend that we should also intensify our efforts in nutrition education among our young people. I simply do not believe the argument that it is futile (徒劳的) to try to change eating habits. Once an intelligent person--and this includes adolescents--understands the need for a healthy diet, I think he or she will act accordingly. As for specific actions: I suggest that blood hemoglobin (血红蛋白) should be checked as a routine part of a youngster's yearly physical. It should contain at least 11 grams per 100 milliliters of blood for a girl and at least 12 grams for a boy. If it is any lower, the physician probably will prescribe an easily absorbed iron supplement.

Adolescents--and everyone else--should cut out highly processed foods and drinks, which may be how in iron and other nutrients. Read the labels for iron content. Especially make sure that all bakery products are made with enriched flour or whole grains. Try adding liver ,chicken, beef, veal or any other variety to the weekly menu.

Finally, even when you're trying to lose weight, always eat a sensible, well-balanced diet made up of a variety of fresh of very lightly processed foods. This way, you stand a good chance of getting not only enough iron, but also adequate amounts of all the other essential nutrients.

第36题:

The author recommends that young people ______.

A.check blood hemoglobin yearly

B.be oh a strictly vegetarian diet

C.lose weight

D.do some more studies on hemoglobin

第37题:

The passage is mainly about ______.

A.the importance of diet

B.the need of iron

C.adolescents' eating habits

D.blood hemoglobin

第38题:

When the author says that we should intensify our efforts in nutrition education among our young people, he means that we should ______.

A.force young people to eat well-balanced meals

B.tell young people to eat liver , chicken, beef ,or veal

C.teach adolescents about nutrition in home economics class

D.try to change eating habits to get enough iron and other essential nutrients

第39题:

The author says that the appropriate way to lose weight is to ______.

A.cut out highly processed foods and drinks

B.eat a variety of fresh or very lightly processed foods

C.eat vegetables and eggs

D.eat foods recommended by a physician

It is impossible that the people of the world today could agree upon a single international language that everyone would be able to speak and understand. In the United Nations there are five official languages —English, Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. How about making one of them into an international language? English has been worked on for this purpose. A basic word list of B50 English words named Basic English was made. These are the only verbs in the entire list: "come, go, give, keep, let, do, put, make, say, be, seem, may, will, have, send." Writing in Basic English may require you to use a great number of words—as in having to say "it came to my ear" instead of "I heard"—but you can still say anything you want to with just 850 different words and a few suffixes and prefixes. This is a much smaller number of words to have to be memorizes than ordinary words offered to students of a foreign language.

But people have always had a need to do more than simply "tell it as it is". Language is for reporting not only one's work. For this, a language needs all kinds of grammar and style that throw back its history and development just as a person needs eyebrows. Is there some special reason why our lips should be a different color from the rest of our face? Perhaps not, but this is how people—real people—are. For communication between people, languages in all kinds will remain to reflect the growth of the societies that speak them.

第61题:

In this passage, "tell it as it is" means "______".

A.people think Basic English can express what they see or hear

BRITAIN is a popular tourist place. But tours of the country have pros and cons.

Good news

Free museums. No charge for outstanding collections of art and antiquities.

Pop music. Britain is the only country to rival (与……比敌) the US on this score.

Black cabs. London taxi drivers know where they are going even if there are never enough of them at weekends or night.

Choice of food. Visitors can find everything from Ethiopian to Swedish restaurants.

Fashion. Not only do fashion junkies love deeply and respect highly brand names such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen; street styles are justly loved, too.

Bad news

Poor service. "It's part of the image of the place. People can dine out on the rudeness they have experienced, "says Professor Tony Seaton, of London University's International Tourism Research Center.

Poor public transport. Trains and buses are promised to defeat the keenest tourists, although the overcrowded London tube is inexplicably (无法解释的) popular.

Lack of languages. Speaking slowly and clearly may not get many foreign visitors very far, even in the tourist traps(圈套).

Rain. Still in the number one complaint(抱怨).

An air-conditioning. So that even splendidly hot summers become as unbearable as the downpours.

Overpriced hotels. The only European country with a higher rate of tax on hotel rooms is Denmark.

Licensing hours. Alcohol(酒)is in short supply after 1! p.m. even in "24-hour cities".

第64题:

What do tourists complain(抱怨) most?

Which picture do you find the most interesting? Ask as many people as you can to see which picture they prefer.

I have found that most people prefer Illustration A. The shape of the bushes in Illustration B is the same and they are the same distance from the edge of the picture. The center of balance of the picture is right in the middle, and this equality seems to be boring.

This principle applies to abstract shapes as well. The squares in Illustration C are all the same. There is no reason for us to look around the picture; if we have seen one square then we have seen them all. In Illustration D the squares are different, each has individual character. We look from one rectangle to another comparing them and thinking about their relationship.

Illustration D is a little more interesting. When we look at Illustration C our eyes don't move; when we look at Illustration D our eyes move as they look at each shape.

Try it and notice how your eyes move. Show C and D to a friend. Position yourself so that you can see your friend's eyes. Tell your friend to look at each drawing for a few moments, while you try to guess which one they are looking at by the way their eyes move.

Every picture is made of shapes, spots, lines and spaces. The shapes may be people and roads and trees and skies. They may not represent anything at all. But the arrangement in the picture will always be important. The arrangement can express so many different feelings, like music.

第68题:

______ seems to be boring according to the passage.

A.Illustration A

B.Illustration B

C.The shape of the bushes

D.The arrangement in Illustration A and D

第69题:

When we look at Illustration C, ______.

A.our eyes don't move

B.we think about the relationship between the squares

C.we guess what the shapes may be

D.we express the artist's feelings

第70题:

It is likely that the author wants to tell us ______.

A.how to draw pictures

B.why to draw pictures

C.how to enjoy pictures

D.what to be seen in pictures

C

In pioneer days, being a good neighbor was very important. Neighbors helped one another raise a house, build a barn, and clear fields. Families depended on one another for friendship and entertainment. But today in our cities and suburbs, neighboring is not common. A family may

not even know the other families that live close by.

We live in an age of machines, and each family may have its own car, TV set, and washing machine. People no longer depend on neighbors as much as they once did.

Machines keep people apart in other ways. In our grandparents' time, women met while they hung out their washing, and men stopped and talked while they mowed their lawns. Today, women stay in the house with their automatic driers. The men can't hear anything above the roar of their power lawn mowers. And the children are inside watching their favorite TV shows.

Is the idea of being neighborly old-fashioned? In 1985, a power failure hit New York City, and many thousands of people were left stranded. Suddenly, everyone shared the same problem, and our largest city became a group of eight million neighbors. People with cars offered rides to those walking. Other persons helped direct traffic. Trapped in elevators, people played word games and helped keep each other in good spirit.

In times of trouble, people still depend on one another. As time goes on, people may once again feel that being good neighbors is important. 第71题:

Which is true of this passage?

A.The other families might not even know a family that lived close by in the past.

B.We live in an age of machines when machines can do everything.

C.Neighboring is not as common as it used to be.

D.Everyone shared the same problem—power is not enough for daily use.

第72题:

What does the writer of this passage want tell readers?

A.Since human beings cannot live alone, being neighbor will be important again.

B.Machines are not good because they keep people apart.

C.Neighbors are not necessary in our time of machines.

D.Machines call replace good neighbors as they can work for people and entertain people.

第73题:

Which statement do you agree with after your reading?

A.When the power failure hit New York City, people only minded their own business.

B.Nobody needs all the machines we have made till now.

C.People used to pay each other with their building, raising, and so on.

D.People have difficulties in finding a good neighbor today.

BEIJING -- Beijing is to spend up to US $20 billion to change the Chinese capital into a 21th century one for the 2008 Olympics.

The government managed to host the 2008 games. The general aim is for Beijing to have the same environmental standards as Paris, London or Washington by 2008.

Hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent to pipe natural gas to the city's homes, taking away dirty coal burning gradually while 60 000 buses will be changed to liquefied(液化的)gas.

The money also will be used for relocating the polluting factories and building green belts. By 2008 around 90 percent of Beijing's waste will be treated, compared to only 40 percent at present.

Olympic officials have already announced that around 50 large projects are being dealt with to improve traffic congestion and cut down pollution. They include construction of Beijing's first light railway, a 40.5-kil-ometer-long line which was completed in 2005.

Beijing, besides, plans to build an 82.25-kilometer-long subway to add to the existing 53 kilometers. Nine major roads will be rebuilt or widened.

Beijing also plans to build a 70-meter-wide green belt among the waterways to protect water quality as well as increase the green areas. 第74题:

To fight a noise by making more noise sounds strange, but that's exactly what motor engineers are doing in Germany and some other countries.

Car makers' research and development laboratories have already proved that mixing more noise with the help of loudspeakers can reduce the unwanted noise.

Physicists have known about the technique for a long time. Sound is made up of pressure waves in the air. If two sound waves of the same frequency (频率) mix so that the highest point of one wave happens at the same time as the lowest point of the other wave, the result is no sound. Therefore, by producing a perfect copy of the noise and delaying it by half a wave cycle (周期), we can kill the unwanted noise. Using this technique many carmakers are racing to develop noise-killing systems (系统) both inside and outside the cars.

Another good thing about the use of noise-killing systems is that it saves the need for a silencer; this not only reduces the weight of a car, but also makes the motor burn less fuel and work better.

Some engineers believe that the noise-killing system will be used in most cars within a few years. But the carmakers haven't decided if they will carry it into production because it would add several hundred dollars to the cost of their cars.

第78题:

Which of the following gives a general idea of how the noise-killing system works?

A.By producing pressure waves going in the opposite direction.

B.By mixing high frequency sound waves with low frequency sound waves.

C.By mixing new sound waves with the noise and sending them out together.

D.By making copies of tire unwanted sound waves and letting them out a little later.

第79题:

Besides its main use the noise-killing system can ______.

A.make a car lighter

B.make a car quieter

C.reduce the cost of a silencer

D.improve the performance of a silencer

第80题:

The noise-killing system is not yet popular mainly because ______.

A.it is still being tried out

B.drivers still have their doubts

C.it increases the cost of car production

D.carmakers are not sure if it is necessary

全国公共英语三级模拟试题及答案

2011年全国公共英语三级模拟试题及答案 Section I Listening Comprehension(25 minutes) (略) Section ⅡUse of English(15 minutes) Directions: Read the following text. Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B,C, or Don your ANSWER SHEET 1. Text Most young people enjoy physical activities, walking, cycling, football, or mountaineering. These who have a passion 26 climbing high and difficult mountains are often 27 with astonishment. Why are men and women 28 to suffer cold and hardship, and to 29 on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities 30 which men give their leisure. There are no man-made rules, as there are for 31 as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to 32 , but it is this freedom from man-made rules 33 makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to their own 34 . If we 35 mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is 36 mountaineering is not a “team work”. However, it is only our misunderstanding. There are, in fact, no :matches”37 “teams”of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may 38 , obviously, there is teamwork. A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight with natural 39 that ate stronger and more powerful than man. His sport requires high mental and 40 qualities. A mountain climber 41 to improve on skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions 42 in their early twenties. But it is not 43 for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more 44 than younger men, but they probably climb more skill and less 45 of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

Passage 1 Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services.” Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _______. A. deceive customers B. increase production C. arouse suspicion D. push the sale 2. The word “media ” (in the first paragraph) includes_______ A. the press B. television C. radio D. all of the above 3. Advertisement is mainly paid for by ________ A. the customer B. the producer C. increased sales D. reduced prices 4. Advertisement can increase demand ________ A. all the time B. in any circumstances
