One day when the famous American scientist Addison was on his way home, a young man stopped him and required to have a word with him. Addison accepted his request.

The young man asked, "How, Mr. Addison, can you invent so many things and achieve your fame?"

The scientist said, "It seems that you have been thinking of becoming famous every day."

The young man nodded, "Yes. I have been dreaming of being a person as notable as you. Every minute I am thinking of how to become reputable. I don' t know when I can achieve my fame."

Addison told him, "Don't worry, young man. If you want to be a famous man this way, you will have to wait until you die!"

"Why should I?" the young man was puzzled.

Addison said, "What you dream is actually a high building. You never think of how to build it with bricks. Thus the building will never come into reality. However, your story can serve as a mirror. People will remember you because of your illness and laziness. They will often speak of your name while they give warnings to their children. Aren't you a notorious person by then?"

A long, imaginary prose (散文) story about people is usually called a novel.

It can be about any kind of man, woman, or child. It can be a- bout kins (空族) , or Chicago newsboys, or convicts (罪犯) , or housewives. The Frenchman, Victor Hugo, wrote his novel Les Miserables about a poor man who stole a loaf of bread to keep from starving (饿死).The American, Ernest Hemingway, wrote A Farewell to Arms about a young American with the Italian Army in World War I

A novel can tell the story of any kind of action, over any period of time. The modern Irish (爱尔兰的) writer, James Joyce, covers less than twenty-four hours in Ulysses. Yet Joyce takes a thousand pages to tell all that happens from the time one man gets up in the morning until he goes to bed early the next morning. A German writer,

Herman Hesse, uses only one hundred and fifty pages in his novel Demian to cover a boy's life from the age of ten until he becomes a young man.

A novel does not only tell the things that people do. It also tells why they do them. The Red Badge of Courage, by the American, Stephen Crane, tells about a young soldier in the War between the States who runs away the first time he is in battle. The book shows why he acted as he did. It describes his mental suffering until he overcomes his fears.

Character, action, motive (动机,主题)—this, then, is the stuff (要素) of which novels are made. And herein lies the reason for the novel's continuing popularity, despite changes in style and technique. People buy novels because they enjoy reading about other people. Alone among the literary forms, the novel satisfies the human craving (渴望) to know and understand our fellow creatures.

An old and very rich friend of mine told me he had an unpleasant experience. He went to a famous jewelry shop and asked to be shown some gold necklaces. After examining several, he decided to buy a gold necklace with a precious stone, and asked if he could pay by check. The assistant said that was quite in order, but the moment my friend signed his name, he was invited into the manager's office. The manager was very polite, but he explained that someone with exactly the same name had given them a worthless check not long ago. My friend got very angry when he heard this and said that he would buy a necklace somewhere else. When he got up to go, the manager told him that the police would arrive at any moment and he had better stay unless he wanted to get into serious trouble. Sure enough, the police arrived soon afterwards. They were polite, too, but explained that a person who had used the same name as his was responsible for a number of recent robberies. Then the police asked my friend to copy out a note which had been used by the thief in a number of stores, The note read, "I have a gun in my pocket. Ask no question and give me all the money in the drawer."

Fortunately, my friend's handwriting was quite unlike the thief’s. He was not only allowed to go without further delay, but to take the necklace with him.

The famous American gorilla(大猩猩) expert Diane Fossey had a completely new way to study gorillas-she pretended to be one of them. She copied their actions and way of life-eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk tile way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.

Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired.

Today there are thought to be around 48, 000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400 -450 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes.

Some time age, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. "This is a species of mammal(哺乳类动物 ) ,"said the words below it. "It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good. "The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read," This is a species of mammal," but then went on: "It is the most destructive(破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good."

第77题:

What message can we get from the two photos in the magazine?

A.Gorillas are man's close friends.

B.Both man and the gorilla need to be saved.

C.Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies.

Choose the best word or phrase for each numbered blank and mark A, B,C, or Don your ANSWER SHEET 1. Text Most young people enjoy physical activities, walking, cycling, football, or mountaineering. These who have a passion 26 climbing high and difficult mountains are often 27 with astonishment. Why are men and women 28 to suffer cold and hardship, and to 29 on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activities 30 which men give their leisure. There are no man-made rules, as there are for 31 as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which it would be dangerous to 32 , but it is this freedom from man-made rules 33 makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to their own 34 . If we 35 mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is 36 mountaineering is not a “team work”. However, it is only our misunderstanding. There are, in fact, no :matches”37 “teams”of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may 38 , obviously, there is teamwork. A mountain climber knows that he may have to fight with natural 39 that ate stronger and more powerful than man. His sport requires high mental and 40 qualities. A mountain climber 41 to improve on skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions 42 in their early twenties. But it is not 43 for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more 44 than younger men, but they probably climb more skill and less 45 of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for the advertisement. However, if large-scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less. It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. 1. Advertisement is often used to _______. A. deceive customers B. increase production C. arouse suspicion D. push the sale 2. The word “media ” (in the first paragraph) includes_______ A. the press B. television C. radio D. all of the above 3. Advertisement is mainly paid for by ________ A. the customer B. the producer C. increased sales D. reduced prices 4. Advertisement can increase demand ________ A. all the time B. in any circumstances
