Dutch beachcomber (海滩拾荒者) Wim Kruiswijk has accumulated a collection of 1,200 messages-in-bottles over the course of nearly 4 decades and has responded to almost all of them.

68-year-old Kruiswijk says that his unusual hobby began in 1983 when he found three drift bottles (漂流瓶) on his local beach, each containing letters and return addresses. He wrote to all three addresses and was surprised to receive responses from each one. It was this experience that aroused his interest in hunting and collecting messages in bottles, and he hasn’t stopped looking for them since.

“I find my messages in bottles on the beach of Zandvoort, where I live, and on the DutchIslands,” Kruiswijk recently told Great Big Story. “Messages in bottles are slow mail. It takes you days, or weeks, or months to find a bottle. ”

In the early years, Kruiswijk would find as many as 50 bottles a year, but since 2000 that has slowed to around 20-30 finds, mainly due to beach cleaning efforts. He believes that the rise of the Internet has also played a role in the diminishing number of messages in bottles, telling Dutch newssite PZC, “I used to get a response at half the bottle messages that I answered. Now that’s less; many people want ‘instant satisfaction’.”

Throwing a message in a bottle out into the sea is a longstanding human tradition dating back to the time of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, about 310 BC,who used the bottles to study water currents. Scientists still apply the method to this day, as a means to help researchers develop ocean circulation maps, and to crowdsource scientific studies of ocean currents.

In the past bottles have also been used to send distress messages from sailors in trouble. They also have been used for memorial tributes, or to send loved ones’ ashes on a final journey. One of the more common uses though is just to send invitations out to prospective pen pals, a quaint notion in these modern times, but, as Kruiswijk so clearly shows, an effective one.

4.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A. Kruiswijk found secrets hidden in drift bottles.

B. What made Kruiswijk become a beachcomber.

C. How Kruiswijk formed the hobby of collecting drift bottles.

D. Kruiswijk liked to do some research on bottles thrown into the sea.

5.How did Kruiswijk feel the first time he received response from drift bottles?

A. Satisfied.

B. Astonished.

C. Frightened.

D. Disappointed.

6.Why do Kruiswijk find fewer drift bottles than before?

A. People hate to receive messages from strangers.

B. Many drift bottles have not been washed up onto the beaches.

C. Drift bottles appearing on the beach are cleared up rapidly.

D. Fewer people are interested in Kruiswijk’s message in bottles.

7.What’s the purpose of Theophrastus using the bottles?

A. To ask for rescue.

B. To look for a pen pal.

C. To study ocean currents.

D. To send a message to his loved person.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a seven-part series of fantasy written for adults. George R. R. Martin writes each chapter from the perspective of a specific character, providing a limited point of view for each section. The reader is able to understand the inner workings of the individual, but the reader is barred from a whole understanding of the text. The world he has created has magic, but there is much more than that. While magic exists, it exists on the edge, and the inner unrest of the characters is much more important.

His work also has a level of realness that is astonishing in a work of fantasy. Characters are imperfect, and many make questionable moral choices. In the end, however, Martin shows that both good and bad happen to both the people of high moral standard and the corrupt. He has made it clear that any character can die at any point, which has led to a lot of heartbreak from readers.

In 2011, A Song of Ice and Fire became a television series titled Game of Thrones. Martin has been closely involved with the production. It has currently run for seven seasons, and viewers anxiously await the eighth season to answer their questions from the season seven finale.

His fans are also waiting for The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, the next books in the series, to answer the questions Martin and the television show have not yet addressed. Martin, however, has no plans to rush. He has made it clear that he will continue to write the books while working on the television show and writing other novels.

But how will the story continue? What is going to happen in Westeros, and more importantly: when are we going to find out? Martinis skill as a writer has kept readers and viewers spellbound. Many hope he will finish the next book before the next season of the show begins, but no one knows with Martin. He always keeps his readers guessing. 8.One of the characteristics of A Song of Ice and Fire is ________.

A. each chapter is written from a limited point of view

B. magic is the center of the story

C. Martin has made imperfect characters die at any point

D. many characters make astonishing choices

9.What is George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire considered to be?

A. One of his masterworks of fantasy.

B. An unsuccessful screen adaptation.

C. An artistic creation for the TV.

D. One of the best TV programmes.

10.What does the word “address” in the fourth paragraph mean?

A. written

B. spoken

C. solved

D. directed

11.How will the ending of the story be?

A. Interesting.

B. Confusing.

C. Novel.

D. Unknown.

Imagine waking up one day and finding that your beautiful local beach is no more—gone, its fine white sand swept away by an abnormal storm. You go about your daily business for 12 long years and then suddenly the beach is back, all its glory restored by another storm. This is what happened on the island of Achill, off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return of the beautiful AshleamBay beach that was taken from them in 2005.

That in itself is unusual enough, but the story gets even better! You see, another beach in Achill did a disappearing act once, but took much longer to return. The beach at Doonagh, located only six miles away from AshleamBay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leaving just rock pools behind.

There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at AshleamBay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again. But this time around it took a bit longer than that. It was last seen in 2005 and it stayed for a few months at that time before it was washed away again.

As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thrilled to have their sandy beach back, and even though no one knows how long it’s going to be around for, they are making the most of the time they’ve got before it disappears again.

Some may be quick to believe climate changes cause the phenomenon, but that’s not the reason these two beaches in Achill keep disappearing. Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics (流体力学) and sediment(沉积物) supply, rather than climate changes.

Regardless of what’s causing them, disappearing and reappearing beaches are just part of what makes nature so fascinating.

12.What is people’s reaction to the return of the AshleamBay beach?

A. Full of fear.

B. Quite delighted.

C. Very disappointed.

D. Extremely confused.

13.What can we learn about the beach at Doonagh?

A. It is not located in Ireland.

B. It disappeared 12 years ago.

C. It once disappeared for more than 30 years.

D. It is just made up of rocks and pools.

14.According to the local legend, when should the AshleamBay beach have come back?

A. In 1982.

B. In 2012.

C. In 2016.

D. In 2018.

15.What does Dr Kevin Lynch think of the phenomenon?

A. Some abnormal storms lead to ocean’s enlargement.

B. It is hard to uncover the mystery of beach’s disappearing.

C. Climate changes can result in beaches disappearing completely.

D. Hydrodynamics and sediment supply cause two beaches to disappear.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Why you shouldn’t punish your kids for lying Getting your children to stop lying is challenging. There are many influences (TV, movies, video games and some great books) in which lies are common. Children see parents lie to others, if only to be polite. Most parents add to that with tales about the lives and activities of Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, or to lessen fears. 16.The most common reactions to children who lie are explaining why it is wrong and punishment. 17. Here are three better tools supported by research to use instead. PRAISE: You could ask your child to say something that happened at school that is true. When your child obeys, praise him enthusiastically. Be specific: 18. and give your child a hug or a high five. Aim for one or two interactions (互动) like this a day. If you happen to “catch” your child in a lie, say something like, “That is not true and could ge t you in trouble outside of the home.”

MODEL: Explicitly tell the truth. This could be about something that happened when you were a child or something that happened during the day. It need not be dramatic. Another option is to play a game at dinner. Each person tells one thing that was true that day. Again, give a little praise to the child who normally lies if she plays along.

DECREASE PUNISHMENT AND MORALIZING: They are unlikely to change behavior or develop the conduct you want. 19. Rather, use very mild punishment (light scolding, short loss of privilege, a brief time-out). More severe punishments (shouting, taking away something for a week, hitting) are not more effective in actually changing the frequency of lying.

20. Usually they can be dropped by then. It is unlikely that lying will be completely removed, but with the right encouragement, lying can be dramatically lessened.

A. It is not what that is, but about practice.

B. As ways of changing behavior, these are ineffective.

C. That does not mean ignoring, lying or letting it go.

D. “That was great! You told me what happened just like I asked. Wow!”

E. Try these procedures for two to three weeks and see where you are.

F. “You did a good job, but what you said was not what I’d like to know!”

G. Parents do this out of love, but for some children, lying can become a problem. 第二部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

But the truth is, it is very hard work. If you’re successful, there are deadlines to be met, appointments to keep and the press to deal with. If you’re not successful, then life is extremely tough. I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra cash to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I played extras in many crowd scenes and became a confident participant in a lot of TV commercials for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder. I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go in to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came along the corridor with a piece of paper. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put the paper in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I unfolded the paper, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (试演) for a clown (小丑) for the Canadian circus. I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film! When I was at drama school, there had been a course in acrobatics (杂技) and clown tricks. I had gained top marks in this course for originality and daring. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I’d had in mind when I enrolled in drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make-up. I had the opportunity to travel

高一下学期英语6月月考试卷 一、阅读理解 1. 阅读理解 Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean. In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10330 feet In I960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35800 feet. All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then, in 1964, he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface. Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a

辽宁省实验中学分校2013-2014学年高二6月月考 英语试题 Word版含答案

第一部分:听力(1-20题略) 第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment. Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas. There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control. Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and b uying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free. 21. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of? A. Motor racing in the desert. B. Cycling around a lake. C. Playing basketball in a gym. D. Swimming in a sports center. 22. What do we know about golf from the passage? A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain. B. It causes water shortages around the world. C. It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green. D. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes. 23. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________. A. It uses fewer resources. B. It improves our health. C. It is an outdoor sport. D. It is suggested by experts. 24. The author writes the passage to _________.
