Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on 1.way to school or work. But in China, I hardly see people reading 2.their free time.

Are people’s attitudes toward reading 3.(difference) here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China show that Chinese people still read a lot. They 4.(simple) prefer e-books over regular books. However, other data show that reading is still 5.(popular) in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文学). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms to the modern science-fiction epic The Three-Body Problem, Chinese authors 6.(create) many fantastic works so far.

Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for 7.. Chinese students surely have to read more and do more homework 8.American students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time.

9.learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own 10.(person) beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?

13、

There’s much to see under the sea, but you need to remember that light behaves differently in water than in air. The objects appear closer to you than they exactly are. You might find yourself reaching out to touch something and completely missing it.

Objects under water will appear larger than they would on the surface, too. Be careful not to tell any stories about the big fish that got away. The fish might not be so big after all! It’s just because sometimes things can seem to be as much as about 33 percent bigger in water!

What’s more, in deeper water, colors just don’t seem as bright. In fact, it looks as if some colors are missing. Remember the color of an object results from the wavelengths(波长) of light that are reflected from its surface. And light is taken in as it moves down through the water.

Swimmers wear wet suits to keep warm underwater. Let’s take a bright red, yellow, and blue wet suit as an example. These colors are hard to miss on the surface of water. Watch carefully the changes in color as you descend in water. The red part now looks almost black because the red light wavelengths, the longest among these three colors, are missing. As you go down deeper, the same thing will happen to the yellow part and in the end to the blue part. Even at a place of about 6 to 9 meters underwater, you will look terrible, like a ghost(鬼怪)! And you have to wait for your return to the surface to enjoy the bright colors again.

Do you have a better understanding of the behavior of the light underwater? We need to be careful about the objects around us and explore(探索) their mysteries by ourselves.

1.You miss the object underwater when you want to touch it because___________.

A.your eyesight is quite poor

B.your are not quick enough

C.it is not as close as it seems

D.it disappears very quickly

2.The example of the wet suit is used to explain the change of __of an object underwater in paragraph 4. A.the size B.the color C.the position D.the weight

3.The underlined word “descend” probably means _________ in paragraph 4?

C.stop breathing for a while D.go down

4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.A four-meter-long fish looks three meters long underwater.

B.Much water will be taken in by the swimmer deep in the water.

C.The wavelengths of red light are longer than those of the blue light.

D.Y ou will see a ghost if you go as deep as 6 to 9 meters into the sea.

5.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A.The Standard of Color Underwater

B.The Direction of Light Underwater

C.The Beauty of Color Underwater

D.The Behavior of Light Underwater

15、Do you often listen to music at loud volumes(音量)? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Over 1 billion young people have problems in listening because they listen at loud volumes for a long time, WHO said. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells (听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells detect (探测) sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and make some of them die. This is why people have hearing loss.

Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 decibels is roughly equal to the noise of a subway.

C.Because it prevents our ears from resting.

D.Because it allows people to get used to listening to loud sounds.

4.What can we get from the last paragraph?

A.People love to listen to loud music.

B.It’s reasonable to listen to loud music in some places.

C.People are likely to listen to music on the subway.

D.People don’t always realize ho w loud their music is.
