However, the hottest sections of the desert may become even hotter, increasing by up to1.5°C.The wall may seem like a moonshot, but all the best ideas usually are.As Thomas Sankara, former president of Burkina Faso said in1985,“You cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain degree of madness...The courage to turn your back on the traditional methods, the courage to invent the future.”24.What’s the purpose of the“Great Green Wall”?A.To protect the original landscapes.B.To bring more wildlife to this region.C.To increase the varieties of local plants.D.To stop the Sahara desert from expanding.25.What can we know about the Sahel region?A.It is in the centre of the Sahara.B.It is home to50million cattle.C.It provides a lot of job opportunities.D.It consists of many poor countries.26.What impact would the wall have on weather patterns?A.Free of drought in Africa.B.More rainfall in the Sahel.C.Lower temperatures all year round.D.Cooler weather in the hottest areas.27.What is the author’s attitude to the project?A.Favorable.B.Uncaring.C.Critical.D.Ambiguous.CThe earliest discovered cave paintings date back to the Upper Paleolithic(旧石器)period. We might expect that they would be sim l made, but the cave paintings of Spain and southern France show a high degree of skill. So do the cave paintings in southern Africa. Some of those appear to have been painted as much as28,000years ago,w ich suggests that painting in Africa is as old as painting in Europe. The early Australians may have painted on the walls of rock shelters at least30,000years ago.The researchers identified three principal locations of paintings in the caves of western Europe:in obviously inhabited rock shelters and cave entrances;in galleries near the inhabited areas of caves;and in the inner reaches of caves, whose difficulty of access has been interpreted as a sign that magical-religious activities were performed there. The subjects of the paintings are mostly animals. The paintings rest on bare walls, with no decoration.Perhaps, like many contemporary peoples,Upper Paleolithic men believed that the drawing of a human image could cause death or injury, and if that were their belief,it might explain why human figures are rarely found in cave art.Another explanation for the focus on animals might be that these people sought to improve their luck at hunting. The particular symbolic significance of the cave paintings in southwestern France is more clearly revealed by the results of a study. The data suggest that the animals in the cave paintings were mostly the ones that the painters preferred for meat. For example, wild cattle and horses are found more often than we would expect by chance, probably because they were larger and heavier(meatier)than other animals in the environment. In addition, the paintings mostly draw animals that the painters may have feared the most because of their size, speed, natural weapons such as horns. That is,mammoths(猛犸)are drawn more often than deer.28.What do we know about cave painting in Europe?A.It is as much as28,000years old.B.It is much more than30,000years old.C.It is much older than painting in Australia.D.It is older than painting in southern Africa.29.What makes people think certain paintings were connected with magical-religious activities?A.The paintings were in cave entrances.B.The paintings were in hard-to-reach places.C.The paintings were obviously more attractive.D.The paintings were similar to those in galleries.30.Why are human figures rarely found in the cave painting?A.Human figures could improve their hunting luck.B.Human figures were too difficult to draw at that time.C.The drawings of human figures were believed to cause death.D.The drawings of human figures differ from those of contemporary people.31.Which best represents hunters’attitude to deer in the Upper Paleolithic period?A.Hunters did not fear deer as much as mammoths.B.Hunters didn’t hunt deer because of their size and speed.C.Hunters avoided deer because of their natural weapons.D.Hunters preferred deer’s meat to those of other animals.DAdults are often embarrassed about asking for aid. It’s an act that can make people feel vulnerable. The moment you ask for directions, you reveal that you are lost.Seeking assistance can feel like you are broadcasting your incompetence.New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school, even when they need it, for the same reason. It has revealed that youngsters as young as age five care deeply about the way others think about them.To learn more about how children think about reputation,we asked576children,ages four to nine,to predict the behavior of two characters in a story. One of the characters genuinely wanted to be smart, and the other merely wanted to seem smart to others. In the study,we told children that both characters did poorly on a test.We then asked which of these characters would be more likely to raise their hand in front of their class to ask the teacher for help. The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought that the character who wanted to seem smart would be less likely to ask for assistance. And children’s expectations were truly “reputational”in nature—they were specifically thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. When assistance could be sought privately(on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.When children themselves are the ones struggling,it seems quite possible they, too, might avoid seeking out help when others are present, given our findings.Their unwillingness could seriously slow academic progress.Such reputational barriers likely require reputation-based solutions.Teachers could give children more opportunities to ask help privately by making themselves available to students for one-on-one conversations.Teachers should help students consider asking questions in front of others as normal, positive behavior.Parents could point out how a child’s question kicked off a valuable conversation in which the entire family got to talk and learn together.Adults could praise kids for seeking help. These responses send a strong signal that other people value a willingness to ask for aid and that seeking help is part of a path to success.32.What does the underlined word“vulnerable”in paragraph1probably mean?A.Helpful.zy.C.Weak.D.Lost.33.Why are children unwilling to ask for help in front of others?A.They care about their reputation.B.They want to learn from the adults.C.They worry about others’emotions.D.They can solve the problem independently.34.What are children asked to do in the study?A.To pretend to be smart.B.To find out which character is smarter.C.To choose a character they like.D.To predict who would ask for help publicly.35.Which of the following can be a way to solve reputational barriers?A.Parents keep asking kids more questions.B.Teachers discourage asking for help privately.C.Adults consider asking questions publicly worthwhile.D.Teachers reduce one-on-one conversations with students.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
英语高考模拟卷一、阅读选择1.阅读理解There were no people on the park bench as I sat down to read beneath the branches of an old willow tree, with good reasons to sigh, for the world was dragging me down. At this time, a boy approached me. He stood right before me, and said with great excitement, “Look what I found!〞In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, with its petals (花瓣) all worn. Wanting him to take his flower and go off to play, I managed a smile and then turned to the other side. But instead of leaving, he sat next to my side and placed the flower to his nose and said firmly and clearly, “It really smells pretty and it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it. Here it's for you.〞The flower before me was dying or dead. But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the flower, and replied, “Just what I need.〞But instead of placing the flower in my hand, he held it in mid-air. It was then that I noticed that the boy was blind.I heard my voice quiver (轻微颤抖), and at the same time my tears shone like the sun. As I thanked him for picking the very best one, he smiled and said, “You're welcome.〞And then he ran off to play, not knowing the influence he'd had on me.I sat there and wondered how he managed to see a self-pitying woman beneath an old willow tree. Perhaps from his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.Through the eyes of the blind boy, I could see the problem was not with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I had been blind. From now on, I promised to see beauty and appreciate every second. Some years ago,the group to which Sparrow belonged was taken over by another company. Although Sparrow showed no sign of declining, the chain was generally in an unhealthy state. With more and more fast-food concepts reaching the market, the Sparrow menu had to struggle for attention. And to make matters worse, its new owner had no plans to give it the funds it required.Sparrow failed to grow for another two years until a new CEO,Carl Pearson, decided to build up its market share. He did a survey, which showed that consumers who already used Sparrow restaurants were extremely positive about the chain, while customers of other fast-food chains were unwilling to turn away from them. Sparrow had to develop a new promotional campaign.Pearson faced a battle over the future of the Sparrow brand. The chain's owner now favored rebranding Sparrow as Marcy's restaurants. Pearson resisted, arguing for an advertising campaign designed to convince customers that visits to Sparrow restaurants were fun. Such an attempt to establish a positive relationship between a company and the general public was unusual for that time. Pearson strongly believed that numbers were the key to success, rather than customers' spending power. Finally, the owner accepted his idea. The campaign itself changed the traditional advertising style of the fast-food industry. The TV ads of Sparrow focused on entertainment and featured original songs performed by a variety of stars. Instead of showing the superiority of a specific product, the intention was to put Sparrow in the hearts of potential customers.Pearson also made other decisions which he believed would contribute to the new Sparrow image. For example,he offered to lower the rent of any restaurants which achieved a certain increase in their turnover(营业额).These efforts paid off,and Sparrow soon became one of the most successful fast-food chains in the regions where it operated.〔1〕Which was one of the problems Sparrow faced before Pearson became CEO?A.The number of its customers was declining.B.Its customers found the food unhealthy.C.It was in need of financial support.D.Most of its restaurants were closed.〔2〕What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A.Customers of Sparrow restaurants.B.Sparrow restaurants.C.Customers of other fast-food chains.D.Other fast-food chains.〔3〕For what purpose did Pearson start the advertising campaign?A.To build a good relationship with the public.B.To stress the unusual tradition of Sparrow.C.To learn about customers' spending power.D.To meet the challenge from Marcy's restaurants.〔4〕What was Pearson's achievement as a CEO?A.He managed to pay off Sparrow's debts.B.He made Sparrow much more competitive.C.He helped Sparrow take over a company.D.He improved the welfare of Sparrow employees.3.阅读理解Richard Dermer is a pizza shop owner. The objects were discovered off the coast of the United States in the Pacific Ocean. The crew of the Nautilus,a private research ship, recovered the rock particles(颗粒). The Nautilus is operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. The group says its aim at present is to examine areas of the ocean that have never been explored before. The search was launched after US government weather stations observed a large meteorite exploding some months ago. The explosion lit up the sky and sent the rock particles to the earth. The meteorite fall was the largest recorded over the United Slates in at least 20 years. The team includes scientists from NASA, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and the University of Washington. The scientists examined what they believe were two small meteorite fragments. Further testing is needed before they can confirm that the material came from the explosion. The Nautilus is equipped with two remotely operated vehicles(ROVs), called Hercules and Argus. These robotic submarines help researchers find and collect materials from the seafloor. The fact that the particles landed in the ocean? instead of on land, means larger pieces may have survived and can be studied. For this reason, scientists decided to launch the first intentional search for meteorites from the ocean. Until the latest research, scientists had only accidentally discovered a small number of meteorites from drilling operations. The objects recovered from the bottom of the sea likely came from the recent explosion for two main reasons. First, meteorite particles are basically made of glassy materials that do not tend to last long in seawater. Secondly, they came from what looked like a small hole on the seafloor. Some evidence shows that they came from something that fell.12.What is the current goal of the crew of the Ocean Exploration Trust? ______A. To recover the rock particles.B. To observe movements of the universe.C. To study unexplored places of the ocean.D. To examine creatures of the explored ocean.13.What mainly caused the start of the search in the sea? ______A. A huge meteor shower.B. Business value of meteors.C. Plenty of natural resources.D. The brainstorm of researchers.14.Why do the scientists prefer to search for meteors in the ocean? ______A. They can find meteors more easily.B. They may find bigger rock particles.C. They like to explore strange sea areas.D. They have better submarine equipment.15.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? ______A. Offer clues for the search.B. Give reasons to support a guess.C. Stress the importance of the event.D. Describe the process of the search.【答案】【小题1】C 【小题2】A 【小题3】B 【小题4】B【解析】1.C.细节理解题.根据第二段The Nautilus is operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust. She was usually her own worst critic, but today Adriana was pleased with what she saw.Sunset was her best work yet! Not that her classmates would agree.Their reaction to her abstract art was always "What's that supposed to be?" or "Artists use brushes to paint, not knives, string and cloth." Still, she didn't care. Adriana painted to please herself, not others. When she showed the work to Mr. Marcus, her middle school art teacher, the net day, he shook his head and said sternly, "Please Adriana, I've had enough of this." Anyone hearing this comment and its tone would naturally think Mr.Marcus was criticizing her work, but it was his frustration speaking. He loved Adriana's paintings and had repeatedly begged her to show them publicly. She always refused. As her middle school graduation approached, however,Adriana began worrying about university. Her parents would cover her study fees, but Adrianaplanned to pay for her university books, art supplies and accommodation herself. So,this time, when Mr.Marcus made the suggestion,Adriana agreed. A disbelieving grin appeared on Mr. Marcus's face. The following day, after checking the newspapers and visiting several local real estate offices, Adriana and Mr. Marcus wandered around the town looking for a suitable location. Finally, though, they could not find anything within their price range. At the day's end, the pair entered a small coffee shop to rest. Mr. Marcus could see the disappointment on Adriana's face and, as a woman came to take their order, said, "Don't worry. We'll find somewhere to show your art." On hearing this, the woman said, "Did you say art? You know we show local artists' works right here in the café," pointing to the paintings hanging on the walls. "Bring a few of your pieces around tomorrow for me to look at. I'm Susan by the way, the owner." Manned bases on the Moon or Mars for example, have long been a dream of many. There is a natural desire to explore as far as we can go, and also to extend humanity's presence on a permanent or at least semi﹣permanent basis. In order to do this, however, it is necessary to adapt to different extreme environments. On the Moon for example, a colony must be self﹣sustaining and protect its inhabitants from the airless, harsh environment outside.Mars, though, is different. While future bases could adapt to the Martian environment over time there is also the possibility of modifying the surrounding environment instead of just co﹣existing with it.This is the process of terraforming ﹣ adjusting Mars' atmosphere and environment to make it more Earth﹣like. But the bigger question is, should we?One of the main issues is whether Mars has any native life or not and if it does, should it be preserved as much as possible? If the answer is yes, then large﹣scale human settlements on Mars should be completely off﹣limits. Small colonics might be fine, but living on Mars should not be at the expense of any native habitats, if they exist. If Mars is home to any indigenous life, then terraforming should be a non﹣issue; it simply shouldnot be done. What if Mars is lifeless? Even if no life exists there, that untouched and unique alien environment needs to be preserved as it is as much as possible. We've already done too much damage here on our own planet.By studying Mars and other planets and moons in their current natural state, we can learn so much about their history and also learn more about our own world. We should appreciate the differences of other worlds instead of just transforming them to suit our own ambitions.(1)What is the best title for the text?A.A Is there life on Mars?B.Can we adapt to Mars?C.Should we terraform Mars?D.Are Mars and Earth So Different?(2)What does the author think we should do if life is found on Mars ?A.Ensure that it's not harmed.B.Negotiate with the Martians.C.Change the unpopulated regions.D.Assess the advantages and disadvantages.(3)What does the underlined word "indigenous" in paragraph 3 mean?A.Complex.B.Native.C. Foreign.D. Intelligent(4)How does the author develop his ideas in the text?A.By referring to others' research.B.By evaluating different planets.C.By justifying the benefits of terraforming.D.By arguing in support of one viewpoint.4.(8分)After 400 years,William Shakespeare (1564﹣1616)is still widelycelebrated as a great crafter of language and playwright (剧作家).But he was not the only great master of dramatic writing to die in 1616,and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting impact on theatre. While less known worldwide,Tang Xianzu is rightly considered China's greatest playwright and is highly admired in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi Province, and worked as a government official until,in 1598 and aged 49,he retired to focus on writing. Unlike Shakespeare's large body of plays and poems, Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin, A Dream under a Southern Bough, Dream of Handan and The Peony Pavilion ﹣ widely considered to be his masterpiece. In the latter three, much of the story is told through dream sequences. Tang used these scenes to explore human emotions in ways that challenged the feudal system of his time.It is a similar dream structure that we find in Shakespeare^ A Midsummer Night's Dream.Tang lived towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368﹣1644)and, similarly to Shakespeare, his lasting success was partly due to the growth of theatre as an artistic practice during his lifetime. As in Shakespeare's England,it became hugely popular in China, with public theatres opening in different cities and traveling performance groups becoming common. Theatrical audiences started to populate open public spaces, and theatre as a popular form of entertainment found its place outside palaces. However, unlike in Shakespeare's England, there was hardly any mixing of the rich with commoners at theatrical events.During this time, the way in which play﹣texts were enjoyed, spread and performed also changed. Initially, Chinese dramas had an emphasis on poetic language and were distributed in book form, to be read like novels. They were seldom,if ever, performed. However, from the mid﹣16th century, kunqu opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southern China to become a symbol of Chinese culture. While Tang and Shakespeare lived a world away from each other, they share in common the humanity of their drama, their heroic figures, their love for language, a lasting popularity ﹣ and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.(1)Why does the writer refer to Shakespeare throughout this article about Tang?A.To compare the writing styles of the writers.B.To emphasize Tang's importance in literature.C.To assess the achievements of these two great writers.D.To examine the different influences of Tang and Shakespeare.(2)What distinguishes The Purple Hairpin from Tang's other plays?A.It does not rely heavily on dream scenes.B.It is widely considered to be his best work.C.It was the only play to be publicly performed.D.It challenged the feudal system of ancient China.(3)What characteristic was shared by both English and Chinese theatre during Tang's lifetime?A.Music and poetry were present in most performances.B.The popularity of public theatrical performances grew rapidly.C.Different social classes often attended the same performances.D.Most plays were written to be read as novels rather than performed.(4)Which of the following would the author probably agree with?A.Tang's plays were superior to his poems.B.Tang is more widely read than Shakespeare.C.Tang is the best playwright in Chinese history.D.Tang and Shakespeare knew of each other s works.第二节(共1小题;每小题10分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.5.(10分)Up in the air﹣a history of ballooningThe first kind of air transportation was the balloon. People traveled by balloon one hundred years before there were planes or jet aircraft. Those early days of ballooning were exciting, but they were also risky.(1)However, the danger did not stop the balloonists. The first real balloon flight was in France in 1783. Two French brothers made a balloon.(2)Hot air is lighter than cold air,so it goes up. The hot air balloon went up 1,000 feet in the sky.(3)They built a fire under the balloon to make the air hot. This made the balloon stay up in the air for a few hours. But their balloon was tied to the ground. So it could not go anywhere.Soon balloonists tried longer flights. In 1785,an American and a Frenchman flew over the English Channel. They left England on a cold, clear January day.Halfway across, their balloon began to drop toward the water. They threw out some equipment and food to make the balloon lighter. The balloon continued to fall, so they threw out almost everything in the basket ﹣even some of their clothes.(4)During the nineteenth century, ballooning became a popular sport and balloons were also used by scientists to study the air and by armies in war time. After the airplane was invented, however, interest in balloons decreased dramatically. But some people today still like to go up in balloons.(5)What's more, they have a wonderful view of the world below.A.They filled a very large paper bag with hot air.B.High up in the balloon basket, they find quiet.C.Sometimes the balloons fell suddenly and sometimes they burned.D.Back then, few people understood how they were able to fly so far.E.Finally, after about three hours, they landed in France, cold but safe.F.Balloon races and displays remain popular all over the world to this very day.G.Later that same year, two other Frenchmen ascended in a basket under a balloon.第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共1小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑.6.(30分)A special delight for many book lovers is to open a cover to find a map secreted inside. It is filled with the details of land about to be (1). Even worse, we are at the risk of developing dangerous behavior such as depression, smoking and so on.As a student, I know there are many reasons for our loss of sleep, mostly connected with the pressure to succeed. For example, we have to spend much time on homework and other study assignments from teachers and parents. Besides, the present educational system is an important factor.Luckily, some effective steps have been taken to ensure enough sleep for students. So I think only by taking a joint effort of families, schools and the government can we ensure students get more sleep to keep healthy.。

"I like baseball cards because they are pictures of people doing happy stuff—doing what they love, and what I love." said Reese.Reese's loss touched the hearts of the Fresno County fire department, which posted her story on its Facebook page with a request to help Reese restore her baseball card collection. That,in turn, touched the heart of Kevin Ashford.Ashford knew exactly where Reese could find replacement cards:in his garage. He had more than 25,000 in his collection, with an exact value of $35,000 to $50,000.Ashford had been thinking about selling them when he saw the fire department's post. "I wasn't really doing anything with them," said Ashford, "I thought I could take care of this problem rather quickly." First volunteers transported the cards from Ashford's garage to theirs and then surprised Reese during a tour of the firehouse.Towers of Ashford's cards were piled in front of the fire engine. After thanking Ashford,Reese was quick to share the thousands of baseball cards shereceived from Ashford and donors around the country with other kids affected by California's Creek Fire. She's gotten so many,in fact, that she started Cards From Reese,an organization that collects cards and donates them to those in need.4.Why were the baseball cards important to Reese?______A. "I think people around the world are longing to have some kind of real connection with the natural world, and this film speaks to that need," Foster said.He said he had many such experiences with nature, like having a fish swim into his hand or an otter swim with him and reach out and touch him.Still,he said, these strong bonds weren't easily created often requiring years of tireless efforts. And he said he learned many lessons from the San masters, native people of South Africa's Kalahari region. "They taught me to track on land and to look for signs.I applied those same lessons to looking in the water," he said, "Tracking involves knowing the animals well and recognizing their behavior and movements." Observing his special octopus, part of a species known for its intelligence, has been alife-changing experience for Foster. One of the most remarkable moments was when the creature that initially hid in cracks allowed him to join her on a hunting expedition. How does Foster account for this?"When the same animal interacts with you every day over a long period of time, you can assume that there is trust involved."Foster said he learned that you can't force this trust. "Everything must happen at the animal's pace, comfort and convenience. In their eyes,we are big and aggressive, posing a threat to them. They make themselves vulnerable in allowing us into their space because trusting the wrong human could mean death. So it's an immense privilege when they show trust."8.Why is My Octopus Teacher well-received?______A. It shows adventures with a wild octopus.B. It meets the need of natural-history films.C. It has won many awards for best documentary.D. It features a bond between man and nature.9.Which words can best describe Foster from his experiences?______A. Talented and ambitious.B. Patient and persevering.C. Adventurous and stubborn.D. Professional and trustworthy.10.What can we learn from paragraph 5?______A. The octopus took Foster as a friend.B. The octopus was curious about Foster.C. The octopus had human-like intelligence.D. Pumping CO2 into the ground is just one way to dispose of it.It can also go to other uses,as well.Energy companies can mix the carbon dioxide with hydrogen to make fuel.Farmers can feed their plants with it.Soda manufacturers can use it to make their drinks bubble when there is a carbonation shortage. At the moment, the costs are high:about $600 to $800 per metric ton of carbon dioxide,Gebald, the cofounder of Climeworks, said far from the levels around $100 to $150 per ton that are necessary to turn a profit without any financial help of the government. In the long term,Gebald thinks prices will be half that by the late 2030s - about the price where it will be a competitive method of reducing global emissions.12.Why is the new facility built in Iceland?______A. To monitor the air quality.B. To control the release of CO2.C. To apply the latest technology.D. To absorb CO2 in the atmosphere.13.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?______A. The capacity of the carbon plant.B. The potential of the carbon plant.C. The challenge of the carbon plant.D. The disadvantage of the carbon plant.14.What does the underlined word "it" refer to in the third paragraph?______A. Mixture.B. Water.C. CO2.D. Temperature.15.What's the author's purpose in writing the text?______A. To persuade people to invest in the plant.B. To warn people of too much CO2 in the air.C. To introduce the biggest carbon capturing plant.D. To explain how to use CO2 in the atmosphere.二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共12.5分)Capture Spirit of Youth Youth is a relatively brief but vital period in one's life.During his time, habits and interests that will continue for the rest of your life are formed and developed. 2020年广东省佛山市高考英语模拟试卷解析版高考英语模拟试卷(一)一、阅读理解(本大题共15小题,共30.0分)AThe Worlds' Best Bookshops There's nothing like being surrounded by books, wherever you are. Here are the finest oases of literature that travellers can bring you.Daikanyama T-site | TokyoIt is well worth visiting even if just to admire the building's beautiful, crisscrossed architecture.Once you've had your fill of roaming three floors' worth of bookshelves, there's the bar,the coffee shop,or even the video rental space to give you more reason to stay just that little bit longer.Grab a book, order a beer and dive into its pages.I could have stayed hours here.City Lights | San FranciscoThe three-storey establishment publishes and sells titles in poetry, fiction, translation, politics, history and the arts.It hosts events and readings, and runs a non-profit of the same name that aims to promote diversity of voices and ideas in literature. It's opposite Vesuvio,a bar frequented by Kerouac and other Beat-generation writers and artists.Shakespeare and Company | ParisI made a special trip to the Left Bank for this one when I was in Paris. It has two floors packed with English-language texts, and I was particularly struck by any spare wall space devoted to notes from visitors - heartfelt messages to a loved one, dedications to the shop itself,or a quote from a favourite author or philosopher.Hutatma Chowk | MumbaiA few years ago I visited India, investigating Rudyard Kipling's connections with the country.I spotted a cheap copy of The Jungle Book on one of the tarp-covered book stalls at Hutatma Chowk (Martyrs' Square). The booksellers here are like amateur librarians, able to lay their hands on almost any title you ask for.To me,those well-thumbed (翻旧了的)books spoke volumes about the changes of Mumbai's readers in the 150 years since the city gave us Kipling.1.In which bookshop can you buy a drink while visiting?______A. And I just stared at that email and started crying."Luckily Howard had engraved his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan.A couple of days later when it arrived in California,Morgan couldn't believe it."It was like getting my father back," Morgan says."It was like him being able to tell me the story over again - only this time it was real in my hands."4.The passage details Howard's life as a POW to show that ______ .A. war cannot stop his pursuit of successB. passion for art helped ease his sufferingsC. loss of freedom encouraged his creativityD. misery drives him to fight against his fate5.What can we infer about Howard's comic strip in prison?______A. One's health condition.B. A test result at the age of 3.C. The actual age of one's brain.D. A machine for medical check.9.What is the purpose of Elliott's research?______A. To find out why people look older or younger.B. To measure people's brain age at different stages.C. To discover whether brain age can be measured by machines.D. To explore the relationship between brain age and future health.10.What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?______A. The influence of cognitive tests.B. The procedure of Elliott's study.C. The information about volunteers.D. The findings of the brain research.11.What do the findings of the research imply?______A. We should test our brain age earliest possible.B. People suffering dementia can go on working.C. Brain ageing could be predicted at an early age.D. Healthy eating and exercise can cure brain ageing.DOne of the most popular beliefs in parenting is the so-called Mozart effect, which says that listening to music by the Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart can increase a child'sintelligence. Some pregnant women have even gone so far as to play Mozart recordings on headphones pressed against their bellies. And it's not hard to see how Mozart's name became associated with accelerated development. He was history's greatest child genius, performing astonishing music for kings and queens at an age when many of us were content withtuneless singing "I'm a Little Teapot".So,if you have kids or you're expecting to have them, how seriously should you take the Mozart effect? Will the child who doesn't listen to Mozart in the cradle (摇篮)be limited to an ordinary life? Are you a bad parent if your kids don't know about any works of Mozart?Relax. There is no scientific evidence that listening to Mozart improves children's cognitive abilities. The whole idea comes from a small study done in 1993,which found that college students who listened to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K 448)showed some improvement in a test of spatial (空间的)skills. This finding was later described as something extremely amazing by a musician,Don Campbell,in a book.Campbell's claims about the super powers of Mozart's music were repeated endlessly in the media and fueled a craze for Mozart-based enrichment activities. In 1998,for example, the governor of Georgia in the USA requested funds to send classical-music CDs to all parents of newborns in the state.Since then, scientists have examined the claim that Mozart increases intelligence and found no evidence for it.The original experiment with college students was reviewed in 1999,and the increase in the students' spatial skills was found to be negligible. In 2007 the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research asked a team of experts to examine the scientific literature regarding Mozart and child development, and they found no reason to believe that it increased intelligence.12.People relate Mozart to children's intelligence development because he ______ .A. owned extraordinary music talentB. could perform music as a childC. offered music to pregnant womenD. was an royal Austrian composer13.What can we know about the small study in 1993?______A. It added to the popularity of Mozart's music.B. It found no evidence for supporting Mozart effect.C. It helped college students make academic progress.D. It urged Georgia's governor to spread classical music.14.What does the underlined word "negligible" probably mean?______A. Sudden.B. Insignificant.C. Average.D. I Have Fallen Deep Love with Football
In the above passage, the writer tells us the reasons why he likes water gymnastics, such as the amazing movements and those sexy beautiful women swimmers.
Among various sports, I like football best. The reasons are as follows. First, by playing football, I can strengthen our bodies. Besides, playing football provides me with the chance to compete with my teammates, which is beneficial to increase my team spirit and learn how to work with others,
Since I am somewhat crazy about football, I have spent lots of time doing many things related to football, which certainly disturbs my normal study. I can’t concentrate so much on my lessons, falling asleep in class the next day and not finishing my homework on time, I have almost lost interest in my studies.
How should I deal with the contradiction between my studies and hobbies? Some helpful suggestions are needed. Mean while, I quite regret that I shouldn’t have been addicted to football so much. Maybe, I will get out of the trouble with my efforts and put my heart into my study again.。
