The passing of Ruth Handler, the creator of the Barbie doll, brought back memories to many parents whose lives were connected to Barbie’s when their daughters were little.

When my daughter was 7 years old, she said she wanted a Barbie doll. Since a Barbie was only 3 dollars, I bought one for her and didn’t think anything more about it. A week later my daughter came in and said, “Dad, Barbie needs a new dress. There is on e in the catalogue (目录) for only 3 dollars.”I took the catalogue and found out what the makers of the doll were up to. Barbie was only 3 dollars, but you had to buy 200 dresses.

I was hoping my daughter would settle for a dress, but a few weeks later she came back and said that Barbie wanted to be an airline stewardess. I put another 3.50 dollars on the line. Not long later, she wanted to be a nurse, then a singer in a nightclub and then a dancer, each requiring 3 dollars. And then I had to buy a boyfriend named Ken for her. He needed an electric shaver, a basketball, several suits and a tux. You can figure out how much that cost. Pretty soon I had put up 400 dollars to protect my original 3 dollars. Then my daughter announced that Ken and Barbie were going to get married. I had to buy a list of wedding clothes and Barbie’s dream house, and the house cost seventy-fifty. Early on Good Friday in 2002, Kanzius played a round of golf at the Forest Country Club in Fort Myers, Florida. He’d worked 40 hard years building a chain of radio and TV stations around Erie, Pennsylvania, and then he started to enjoy the rewards in retirement.

In the late 1990s, he and his partner sold their stations and took home millions. Strong, slim and still only 58 years old, Kanzius bought a 4,000-square-foot, three-level house on Sanibel Island. He threw himself into retirement, growing plants, playing golf, fishing or sailing along the Gulf of Mexico with Marianne and his friends.

But on that Good Friday afternoon, the long and happy retirement dream ended. Following his doctor’s advice, he went for an X-ray at a radiology center (放射中心) in Fort Myers. He feared something was wrong, but didn’t tell Marianne, because he thought it might be just a false alarm.

Then the results came out. Though the doctors weren’t sure if he had a deadly cancer or a more curable form of Hodgkin’s disease, they knew it had to be treated seriously.

He told Marianne all about it, and on Easter Sunday, they began the battle. They drove north back home, where he would start treatment at a cancer center in Erie.

In fall 2002, after six months of treatment, Kanzius became better. He and Marianne headed for Sanibel. But the following March, a CAT scan showed that the cancer had returned. He was told that he had only 9 to 12 months to live.

D. Because Kanzius was not sure if he was really seriously ill.

63. From the last paragraph we know that _____.

A. Kanzius was cured successfully

Few kids today are taught the value of empathy (同情). It seems so hard for people to show their love and care toward others and to actually understand what they are going through.

As a child I was taught to go out of my way to make someone else happy. My mom would tell me to say at least one kind word to someone else every day. I admit that it wasn’t very easy to do. But as soon as you see the look of gratitude (感激) in that pers on’s eyes, you just want to do as much as you can.

I had an experience with a guy that people were always making fun of. Every time I saw that happening, I knew in my heart that it was wrong. I decided I would try to be his friend. I started walking with him and introducing him to people around us. I was making him happy by just doing that. And I loved the fact that I was really making a difference in his life.

After a while I realized that he wasn’t the kind of person everybody thought he was. We are still really good friends today. People have almost completely stopped making fun of him. But he is still what he was. What had changed was the attitudes of others toward him.

From this experience I’ve learned to be more loving toward other people. What I did for my friend was so easy. And at the same time I had a lot of fun. So I hope that everyone could say a kind word to someone else at least once a day. I can promise it will be the best feeling you can ever get.

One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.

D. a kind word may benefit both the speaker and the listener

66. What does the writer focus on in this passage?

A. Understanding.

B. Friendship.

C. Kindness.

D. Fun.

67. Which of the following can best describe the main idea of this passage?

A. One kind word could make someone’s day brighter.

B. Good feelings can make life a little brighter.

C. Having a good friend can brighten your life.

D. It is not easy to say a kind word in our daily life.

At the beginning of the 20th century there were more than a million lions worldwide. Today there are less than 30,000 in the wild. The remaining lions are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, hunting and activities to protect farms and cattle.

For generations, Masai tribesmen on the large African plains in southeastern Kenya have hunted lions —to protect their farms and cattle. Today they celebrate the lions’ life.

Noah is an elder in the Masai community. “We have decided as a community of the Masai to lay down our spears, and there will be no more killing of lions in our community.”He is part of a group of Masai visiting the United States promoting (推广) the Predator (捕食性动物) Compensation Program.

Conservation International’s Frank Hawkins explains, “The Masai have been living with wildlife for many generations and it has been a conflicting relationship in many ways. They compete with the animals fo r food as lions eat their cattle. We’re trying to find ways in which the wildlife will become something useful to them.” They had the Predator Compensation Fund founded in 2003. After much discussion, a group of Masai farmers agreed to protect lions. In turn, if lions or other predators kill their cattle, the Masai owner will be paid market value for the dead animals from the fund.

One man said that in the past, when a lion killed cattle, they killed it on the spot. And now, after the start of the program, the Masai see the lion population growing. Since 2003, only four lions have been killed here.

A. To protect people in the wild.

B. To help the Masai protect their farms and cattle.

C. To protect lions only.

D. To protect the wildlife.

70. Masai tribesmen killed lions before 2003 _______.

A. because lions were dangerous for people there

B. because dead lions were worth a lot of money

C. because they wanted lions’ meat

D. because they wanted to protect their farms and cattle

71. According to the passage, why haven’t Masai tribesmen kille d many lions since 2003?

A. Because lions don’t eat their cattle any more.

B. Because they will be fined if they kill lions there.

C. Because if a lion kills their cattle, they will be paid for the dead animals from the fund.

D. Because there are less than 30,000 lions in the wild now.

72. What do you think of the Masai?

A. Reasonable.

B. Cruel.

C. Poor.

D. Stupid.

Grandpa picked up several items and placed them on the counter (柜台). He told the clerk it would be on credit. The clerk was new and didn’t know Grandpa, though he had been coming to this same country store for 20 years.

“Sign here,” the clerk pointed to a piece of paper and said.

Grandpa took the pencil beside the paper and carefully marked an “X” on the dotted line.

“You’re supposed to sign your name,” she said.

Grandpa’s hand shook with the pencil. He was a tall man, thin with sandy blond hair and blue eyes. I hadn’t seen him so embarrassed (尴尬) before, especially in front of a teenager girl.

“I can’t read or write,” he said. “I’ve always signed with an ’X’”. I could see he wanted nothing more than to get out of there.

I wasn’t sure what happened, but somewhere deep inside of Grandpa h ad been pricked. I

went close to him and broke my Hershey’s bar in half.

“Want some?” I asked. He took it and bit into it. In spite of his smile, the sadness in his eyes said that chocolate wouldn’t make the pain go away.

Grandpa is no longer with us now, but I know he was never simply “Grandpa X”. He just didn’t know how to read and he thought it was too late in life for him to start. What I would want to tell Grandpa more than anything else, if I could speak to him today, is that it’s not too late. There are programs and people who are willing to help him learn to read and write. But the most important thing I’d say is that whether he could read or not, he was never just “Grandpa X” to me.

73. Which of the following statements about the writer’s gr andpa is WRONG?

Text10

Two years ago my husband bought me a bicycle. If you live in a town, it is often faster than a car. You don’t have to worry about parking. You can leave it anywhere. It has a seat at the back and a basket in the front, so I can take my little daughter to school, to the library, to the shop and anywhere in fact.

I use it mostly in summer when the weather is warm and dry. It can be very unpleasant in winter when it is cold or the rain is pouring down. You must be of course careful on a bicycle. Accidents are not the only problem though. One day I went shopping and came back to find my front wheel missing. Now I have three strong locks.

My husband uses my bicycle sometimes for short journeys. He is not a keen cyclist but he says it’s better than waiting for a bus. He still p refers his car for longer journeys, but I think sitting down is making him fat and lazy. On my bicycle I can get a lot of exercise and fresh air, and cycling makes me feel a lot younger.

Now many wild animals have disappeared and many kinds of the existing wild animals are dying out. So how to protect the wild animals arouses increasing attention year by year. Here is some of my advice.

First, the government should build some protection regions for wild animals and no one should kill wild animals in those regions. Once found, he or she should be reported to the Wildlife Protection Association. Second, we should help people around us realize the importance of protecting wild animals. Third, we should not cut down as many trees as we want to, as the forest is the home of the wild animals. Last but not least, we should not kill wild animals for their fur or eat their meat.
