IX. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)(12分)

This was my grandmother’s first birthday without grandfather, and before he passed away, we had promised him that we would make it her best birthday ever. Grandfather had always said that she expected her birthday party every day since it was also a time for family reunion(团聚).

When my mom, dad, three sisters and I arrived at her little house, we found she had waited up all night for our arrival. Once arriving, we immediately set to prepare for the birthday celebration. We ordered a large three-tier birthday cake and decorated the house with colorful belts and balloons. When everything was ready, I noticed something was missing.

“Where’s your scarf?” I asked.

That scarf, faded(褪色的) and even older than my mom, was a necessary pan of the yearly celebration. Grandfather gave it to grandmother forty years ago on their first date. But now, on her first birthday without him, the scarf was gone, too.

“It must be here somewhere,” she said. “Your grandfather always packed everything so carefully.”

Then we started to search every corner for the missing scarf. As we emptied box after box and found no scarf, my grandmother’s eyes were filled with tears. However, seeing our worried looks, she soon hid her disappointment.

“Check it out! This may be a gift from Grandpa!” my sister shouted as she found a well-wrapped(包装完美的) box.

Grandmother shakily opened the box. With great joy, she pulled out a brand-new red scarf with a note. Her voice trembled(颤抖) as she read it aloud:

“Dear, I noticed some tiny holes in your scarf when I washed it. So I thought it was time for a new one. 1 hope it can bring you as much joy as the first one did. Happy birthday!

Love, Bryant.”

Finally, grandmother blew out the candles in her new scarf, as if grandfather were still with her. It also brought my grandfather home in each of our hearts and made the party our best birthday celebration ever.

For some children around the world, the environment they grow up in has a huge effect on their lives. This is the case in Madagascar, an island country in Africa, where a 3D-printed school is now being built. Maggie Grout was just 15 years old when she set up a non-profit organization-Thinking Huts. Now 22, she is raising money to build a series of 3D-printed school powered by solar energy. She led the whole process from start to finish, working with university professors. They chose Madagascar because it needs more schools. Many children in that country don't have the chance to have access to education. Besides, it has a lot of sunshine, which can be made into energy to power things. Maggie then drew a design for the school. She thought about what the people might need and where they worked best. Next, Maggie found an architect and 3D printing company for the job. To make it environmentally friendly, they use a special 3D printer to build the school. It meant up to 50 percent less concrete (混凝土) used and less CO2. Plus, the school could be completed in just a week. They also used local materials to build the doors, windows and roof. What's more, Thinking Huts trained local workers to use a 3D printer so that they could build more schools on their own in the future. Maggie plans to print more new schools in other parts of Madagascar because one in five children don't have the chance to attend primary school there. Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题) (12分) Face to the Sunshine “Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows” is a popular saying. It encourages people to make the best of a situation, to see the “bright side” of things. It calls attention to the way sunflowers follow the sun during the day. People have known about this phenomenon (现象) for a long time. Recently scientists have discovered how this works. They know why sunflower s keep their “faces” to the sunshine. Sunflowers move and respond to their environment. These flowers actually face the sun as it rises in the cast and follow it as it moves across the sky until it sets in the west. Just like people. these flowers depend on the daily rhythms (节奏) of the day and night. Both the sunflowers and human beings wake up in the morning, follow the sun all day and then rest at night. During the day, young sunflower plants track the sun from east to west. The green flower head turns towards the sun. At night, the young plants turn east waiting for the sun to rise in the morning. Adult sunflowers don’t move. Once the flower is open, it faces only east. Scientists have discovered that this movement and lack of movement has to do with uneven (不均匀的) growth in the plant stems. One side of the stem gets bigger during the day, and at night the other side gets bigger. Certain genes (基因) control this growth. They respond to the light and cause the flowers to turn to face the sun. Scientists have found that young sunflowers that follow the sun have more biomass (生物量) —that means that they get bigger. Adult plants facing the cast get warmer. That in turn attracts more bees and other insects that will help pollinate(授粉) the plant. This means that the plant can produce seeds and has a better chance of reproducing. 78. The material above is a news report, isn’t it? 79. What do sunflowers usually do during the day? 80. Why do both sunflowers and human beings depend on the daily rhythms of the day and night? 81. When do the young sunflower plants turn to face the east? 82. A few weeks ago, Catherine asked Thomas, her 12-year-olds on, what he would like to be when he grew up. Thomas said he wanted to be a Lego(乐高) designer. The next day he appeared with a letter, written in his “best handwriting”, asking Lego if he could work for them. He wisely shared that he'd be available to help with designing Legos afterschool, on weekends, and in the holidays—and that his sister would be keen to do the same. His mom put the letter in the mail but also tried to manage his expectations. She told Thomas that the company probably wouldn't respond though Lego would appreciate his letter. According to Catherine, “He looked disappointed.” Then a package arrived from Christian Pau, the vice president and general manager of Lego U.K. and Ireland. Inside was a Lego kit(模型套装) and a handwritten letter that said: “Seeing my son light up with pride at the beautifully crafted(制作精美的) letter,” Catherine wrote, “was something I won't forget.” And neither will Thomas.
