The ancient Romans drank 47 million gallons of wine every year: a bottle aday for every man, woman, and child in the city. Wine was consumed by both therich and the poor, drunk at every meal. Even slaves were given a weekly amount of 5 quarts each in order to preserve their strength.

Though wine was always popular, the Romans did not plant their own vineyards (葡萄园) until they had taken control of the Italian peninsula in thesecond century AD. Vineyards quickly sprang up all over the Roman countryside and beyond. By the first century, wine was being imported from Gaul and Iberia(modern day France and Spain) in order to quench Rome’s endless thirst for it.

Transporting wine over such vast distances was a serious challenge. Winecontainers needed to be airtight in order to prevent oxidation (氧化), strong enoughto keep from breaking, and light enough to be carried by hand. It was also important that the container be made out of a material that wouldn’t upset the wine’s flavorand be kept at a cool, stable temperature in order to prevent damage, a majorconcern for wine makers to this day. The Romans used clay and oak to solve theseproblems, creating one of the greatest and most wine-soaked cultures.

The drinking habits of Ancient Rome had an enormous influence on Europeanculture. As they conquered Europe, they not only brought their laws, but also theircustoms, exporting their love of wine throughout their empire. They were the first to plant vineyards in the Rhone Valley and across France. They introduced wineto Germany and Britain, and used their knowledge of wine craft to transform andexpand Spanish vineyards. The Roman study of vineyard skills not only improvedthe wine’s quality, but also helped guarantee its survival following the breakdownof Rome and the turmoil (动乱) of the Middle Ages.

24. What does the underlined word “quench” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Limit.

B. Satisfy.

C. Explain.

D. Experience.

C. How to choose wine containers.

D. How to preserve wine properly.

26. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?

A. The Romans’ contribution to wine culture.

B. The Romans’ rule of the European continent.

C. T he Romans’ efforts in building a big empire.

D. The Romans’ remarkable skills in making wine.

27. What can we learn from the text?

A. The Romans produced wine mainly for export.

B. The Romans learnt to preserve wine from the Europeans.

C. The Romans gave slaves wine to make them work harder.

Teenagers who check social media for several hours a day are at the risk ofdeveloping ADHD (多动症), a study has concluded.

The research team, from the University of Southern California, tracked 2,600teenagers aged 15

and 16. They asked them how many times they checked theirphones and other digital devices for various reasons, and then monitored them for symptoms of ADHD. After two years, those who had checked their phones the mostoften were twice as likely as those who checked the least often to show signs ofADHD.

Writing in the JAMA medical journal, the scientists said, “Modern mediadevices immediately inform users when new text messages, social media postings, or videogame play invitations arrive. Exposure to such information may drawattention away from important tasks. Frequent distraction could interrupt thedevelopment of constant attention and organization skills.”

They believe constant access to instant entertainment also has an impact. Researcher Professor Adam Leventhal said all previous research had focused on the link between ADHD and televisions. “What’s new is that previous studies on thistopic were done many years ago, when social media, mobile phones, tablets andmobile apps didn’t exist. We can say with confidence that teens who are exposedto higher levels of digital media are significantly more likely to develop ADHDsymptoms in the future,” he said.

Leventhal believes the findings help fill a gap in understanding how newmobile media devices and seemingly limitless content pose a mental health risk forchildren. And the findings serve as a warning.

British scientists welcomed the findings. But Professor Andy Przybylski of theOxford Internet Institute said, “The study relies on survey responses provided bythe students in question. It is not clear if teachers or parents would rate the childrensimilarly or if the self-reported measure of digital screen use is related w ith eitheractual behavior or higher quality survey items.”

28. How did the researchers conduct the study?

A. By monitoring 2,600 teenagers with ADHD.

B. By tracking the participants for two years.

C. By analyzing data from previous researches online.

D. By controlling different teens’ time spent on social media.

29. What does Leventhal think of the exposure to higher levels of digital media?

A. It will cause diverse ADHD symptoms.

B. It will create higher ADHD risks.

C. It will weaken tee nagers’ confidence.

D. It will have a major influence on organization skills.

30. What does Professor Andy Przybylski think of the study?

A. It provides a better understanding of the media.

B. It should have focused on parents’ responses.

C. Its findings are not reliable enough.

D. It’s a breakthrough in this field.

31. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. The use of digital media is on the rise

B. Teens are increasingly exposed to ADHD

C. Heavy use of social media may increase ADHD risks

D. Teens’ exposure to modern media calls more attention

D

Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier thantheir

gasoline-powered cousins.

People in California love to talk about “zero-emissions vehicles”, but people inCalifornia seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly use fireto make it. Aside from the new folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get ourelectricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something—usually coal, oil,but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms andgeothermal (地热)plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.

In other w ords, those “zero-emissions” cars are likely coal-burning cars. It’s justbecause the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not. It’s as if the CaliforniaGreens are covering their eyes—“ If I can’t see it, it’s not happening.” Gasoline is ani ncredibly efficient way to power a vehicle;

a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But whenyou take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice partof that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat—at the generator, through the transmissionlines, etc.

A gallon of gas may propel your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallonof gas won’t get you as far — so electric cars burn more fuel than gasoline-poweredones. If our electricity came mostly from nukes or geothermal, or hydro or wind or solar, thenan electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, wedon’t use much of those energy sources.

In addition, electric cars’ batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventuallyend up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread acrossall the roads. When it’s a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is verygood at cleaning up when things are too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all thegarbage is in one spot.

32. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Electric cars are far from being clean.

B. Electric cars are better than gasoline-powered ones.

C. People cast doubts on electric cars’ batteries.

D. Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle.

33. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run.

A. no less than 25 miles

B. as far as 50 miles

C. less than 25 miles

D. as far as 25 miles

34. According to the text, electric cars.

A. are more environmentally friendly

B. burn more fuel than gas-powered ones

C. are very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated

D. are poisonous for a long time and will eventually end up in a landfill

35. It can be inferred from the text that.

A. being green is good and should be encouraged in communication

B. electric cars are the dominant vehicles compared with their gas-poweredcousins

C. zero-emissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environment

D. electric cars are not clean because we get electricity mainly by burning something

武汉二中2015-2016学年高一下学期期末英语试卷

武汉二中2015-2016学年高一下学期期末英语试卷 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A My mother was a firm supporter of corporal punishment, but for all her talking she has never spanked(打屁股)my sisters, and me only once. Instead she found ways of punishment that left me a more lasting memory. One of the most memorable of these occasions occurred when I was four. That day mother picked me up early from daycare because we were going to Sears&Roebuck to pay on a Christmas Layaway. I was excited by the lights and decorations, and as we walked through the toy section on the way to the Layaway Department, I saw a toy I had to have. It was a white and red telephone whose bells rang as it was pulled along on a string. Looking lovingly up at my mother I ask ed, “Mama, can I have that telephone?” She replied, "Baby, not now, but if you are a good girl maybe Santa will bring it to you. " "But Mama, I want that telephone right now. " Her eyes narrowed and her hand tightened on mine. "Becky, you can’t have that telephone today, but if you misbehave you can have a spanking. " By now we were standing in the long Holiday line in the Layaway Department, and I figure it was now or never. I lay down on the ground and began screaming, "I want that telephone, " over and over again. Weary Christmas shoppers looked as my mother calmly said, "Becky, you better get up by the count of three or else. One…Two…Three. " Nothing. I was still in full tantrum. So then she lay down beside me on the floor, and began kicking and screaming, "I want a new car, I want a new house, I want some jewelry, I want…" Shocked, I stood up. "Mama, stop. Mama get up, " I tearfully requested. She stood, and brushed herself off. At first stunned, the others waiting in line began to clap, and before I knew it they were cheering and laughing and patting my mother on her back. She blushed and took a little bow and the next thirty minutes in line was pure misery for me as various parents leaving the Layaway Department, shake their heads at me and say with a smile, "Your mom got you good. I bet you’ll never try that again. " And I didn’t, because it left a lasting mental picture more effective then any physical mark. 21. From the second paragraph, we can know that . A. It was after Christmas B. I was very well-behaved C. I liked a red and blue telephone D. I was a primary school student 22. The underlined word “tantrum” can be replaced by . A. disappointment B. sadness C. bad temper D. excitement 23.Why did the mother scream together with her daughter? . A. She wanted to educate the girl B. She wanted to amuse others C. She wanted the girl to buy those things for her D. She wanted to embarrass the girl 24. What can be inferred from this passage? A. The mother has many fans on educating daughter. B. The mother hit the girl in the Department. C. The mother planned to buy the telephone when the girl first asked. D. The girl is still naughty after this experience. B Why are people interested in eating raw foods or whole foods ? One reason is that eating these types of food reduces the risk of acid accumulation (积累;堆积)in your body. Raw and whole foods are usually digested more than cooked and refined foods. When we cook foods, we destroy the natural enzymes(酶) that are part of the food in its raw form. These enzymes were intended by nature to help us digest the food. When we consume food without these natural enzymes , our bodies either digest the food improperly or allow too many nutrients to be absorbed into bloodstream. In both instances, the result is obesity. When too many nutrients are absorbed at once, the body grows fat. Improperly digested food moves slowly through the digestive tract, where it becomes increasingly acidic. To protect its vital organs from this acidic waste, the body changes the acid into fat and stores it safely away from the organs. Processed foods contain chemical elements, which might confuse the appetite mechanism that tells us when we’ve had enough to eat; as a result, people often overeat. Processed foods also upset the digestive cycle. The body will either
