diagrams Sentences

Diagramming sentences provides a way of picturing the structure of a sentence. By placing the various parts of a sentence in relation to the basic subject-verb relationship, we can see how the parts fit together and how the meaning of a sentence branches out, just as the branches of a plant ramify from the stem in space and time. Most students who work at diagramming sentences derive a clearer understanding of how sentences work —as well as satisfaction in the pictorial rendering of sentence structure. This presentation touches upon only the basics of diagramming. Use the hyperlinks back to the Guide to Grammar and Writing (this color)for additional information.

We begin, naturally, with the representation of a very simple sentence: Glaciers melt. We will place the subject-verb relationship on a straight horizontal line . . . Glaciers melt and separate the subject from its verb with a short vertical line extending through the horizontal line.

English sentences 英语基本句型分类(英文版)

English sentences In English, sentences are made up of words of different word classes by means of grammatical rules, and to convey pieces of communicative information, wherein subjects and predicates are the two significant elements. Various sub-categories of predicate verbs will determine the patterns of English sentences, and will in turn determine the patterns of English Post-verb Constructions. As for English sentence, it is widely accepted that there are five Basic English Sentence Patterns, which are SV, SVO, SVC, SVoO, SVOC patterns. However, according to Zhang Zhenbang (2009), there are some adverbials indispensable in the basic patterns of SV and SVO, thus two more patterns as SVA and SVOA is to be added up to the basic sentence patterns. Since adverbial in SVOA pattern can also be named as complement in SVOC, in this section, six patterns of SV, SVO, SVC, SVA, SVoO, SVOC are going to be discussed. In SV pattern, the finite verb here is to be an intransitive verb, like ache, appear, come, arrive and go. Sentences of this pattern are just as the following: (12) My head aches. (13) Everybody laughed. In SVO pattern, the finite verb is to be a transitive verb, like deceive, teach, build and answer. Sentences of this pattern are just as the following: (14) He teaches English. (15) I enjoy sitting in the sun. In SVC pattern, the finite verb is to be linking verb, like be, look, smell, see and hear. Sentences of this pattern are just as the following: (16) She is a teacher. (17) The rose smells sweet. In SVA pattern, the finite verb is to be intransitive verbs, like live, stay, run, and come, and the adverbials here can be adverb and preposition phrases indicating time, location and degree. Sentences of this pattern are just as the following: (18) He lives in Beijing. (19) He runs fast.
