Xi’s words inspire youth

习近平主席给年轻人的七条人生建议。

takes time to share his experiences and wisdom with the country?s young people. From forming a healthy lifestyle to keeping a positive attitude toward life, his wise words are like a lighthouse (灯塔) that guides China?s youth on the right path to personal growth. Here are seven pieces of advice he has given to Chinese youth on different occasions. Let?s take a look.

Refine (磨炼) professional skills

①The youth must refine their professional skills. Study is the ladder of progress and practice is the

realizing the Chinese Dream. (May 4, 2013)

The buttons of life

②Living one?s life is like buttoning up one?s jacket. If the first button is not fastened correctly, the

beginning. (May 4, 2014)

Young people should avoid staying up late

③I was so eager to do my job well but fell ill quite often. The reason? I always burnt the midnight oil. Later, I came to realize that I couldn?t work like this anymore. One has to be fully aware that one cannot finish all the work at a time, however enthusiastic one may be about the job. (Jan 12, 2015)

Happiness does not fall from the sky

④The future is encouraging and inspiring. But happiness does not fall from the sky. We shall

Honest work

⑤The whole society should vigorously promote the spirit of hard work, encouraging people to realize their dreams and change their fate through honest work, while opposing negative thoughts such as profiting from other people?s work, opportunism and indulging in ple asure and comfort. (April 26, 2016)

Roll up our sleeves (袖子) to work harder

⑥As the saying goes, “success comes to those who share in one purpose”. As long as our 1.3 billion-plus people are pulled together for a common cause, as long as the Party stands together with the people and we roll up our sleeves to work harder, we will surely succeed in a Long March of our generation. (Dec 31, 2016)

Not slack in prosperity and not lose faith in adversity

⑦During one?s growth and endeavor, the young may gain succes s and joy, but may also face difficulties and pressure. One should treat the success and failure at the moment with a correct attitude, not slack in prosperity and not lose faith in adversity. One should consider both the success and failure as wealth in life instead of burdens. (May 3, 2017)

Question: Which one impresses or inspires you most? And why? Try to share your own ideas and combine them with your own life experience.

Blame genes for bad sleep

“夜猫子”可能和基因突变有关。

For a lot of people, getting a full night?s sleep is nothing more than just a dream. Some of us climb into bed in the early evening, and the next thing we know, it?s 2 in the morning and we?re still staring at the ceiling.

It?s common knowledge that sleep problems can be caused by things suc h as stress, anxiety, or even using a smartphone before bedtime. But recently, a team of researchers discovered that genes could also be a cause of sleepless nights.

The scientists, from Rockefeller University in New York, US, found that delayed sleep phase disorder (DSPD, 睡眠时相延迟障碍), a condition that affects one?s sleeping patterns, is passed down via a mutated (突变的) gene.w DSPD sufferers wake up later and go to bed later than the average person.

To come to their conclusion, the team studied a 46-year-old woman who is only usually able to fall asleep at 2 or 3 in the morning.

It was discovered that the woman?s body produces the hormone (荷尔蒙) that helps us sleep at night up to seven hours later than regular sleepers. The scientists found this was caused by a mutation in one of the woman?s gene, one that helps regulate (调节) the “body clock”.

Some of the woman?s family members were also found to share the same mutation – and the same sleeping problems – leading the scientists to believe that sleep troubles are passed down through the generations.

However, having this mutation doesn?t mean you automatically have sleep problems. The team also found two people who had the mutation but reported no problems with their sleep.

But while this is an interesting discovery, it offers no help to those who can?t fall asleep at night –although there are a few things you could try to help you sleep earlier.

BBC journalist Michael Mosley produced a TV documentary in May in which he talked about his battle with insomnia (失眠) and the techniques he used.

“I avoid social media for at least an hour before bed, I do mindfulness (正念冥想) exercises, and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I read a book for an hour or so,” he wrote in an article for the Radio Times.

Pre-reading:Have you ever tried skydiving (跳伞)? Do you think anyone should be able to do it?

Freedom of flying high

When a medical condition put Jessika Kattah in a wheelchair, she knew she wouldn?t be able to walk again.

But she could still fly.

Kattah and other disabled people have found a home once a month at an indoor skydiving center in Davie, US. Every second Thursday of the month, it hosts a special event for physically challenged people, during which they can experience what it?s like to fly.

But if you think that floating in a wind tunnel (风洞) is nothing like jumping out of an airplane, Kattah, 30, is happy to tell you that you?re wrong.

“You definitely get that feeling of flying,” said Kattah, who did skydiving twice before she suffered her medical condition. “But the fact that I?m able to get out of my chair makes it so great. You forget about your disability; you?re just like everybody else. It?s so freeing and liberating (解脱的), and there?s no chair attached to you.”

The experience is safe and almost anyone of any age can participate. Few people emerge (出来) from the wind tunnel without a big smile on their face, and applause always erupts from the people sitting in the observation area.

Chuck Petscher, who is blind, had never been the type of person to try anything risky. But on a recent evening, he decided to give indoor skydiving a shot. “I?ll do this, but I?m not jumping out of an airplane,” he joked.

After his flight, which he described as “awesome; a major rush,” he said the experience was “like swimming in the air”.

“When you?re handicapped, you usually have to do things in a different way from everybody else,” he said. “Here, you?re doing what everybody else is doing. That?s what turned me on to it.”

This is also why Kattah has started sharing her experiences on a blog. She wants to send a message to people like her that even though they may feel restricted by (为……所限制) their disability, there?s always something they can do that they never thought they?d be able to do.“If you have that inkling (隐约的想法) of wanting to do it, do it. Don?t let fear guide you. In the end, you?re going to be so happy you did it.”

(英语)高二英语阅读理解专题训练答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throwyour bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA. The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard. However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see. The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices. This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter. What a newspaper includes is decided by its editors. The managing editor decides which stories are newsworthy and gives reporters their tasks. To an editor, there are two kinds of news: hard news, such as the election (选举) of a president, and soft news. Soft news includes stories about a new dance craze, a beautiful historic building, or an interesting person. The soft news fills whatever space is left after the hard news is put into the newspaper space. There is also public service news to fit in-information about meetings and lectures, free health programs, or changes in a local library’s hours. The managing editor decides how important a story is. If a story is very important, it is marked for a headline on the front page. Less important stories appear farther back in the paper. The story editor takes a story and decides to “boil or trim it”. If the editor decides to boil a story, it becomes front-page article. Depending on the size of a paper, there may be a sports editor, a business editor or an art editor. On a small weekly paper, an editor may cover two or more of these areas. Once all the stories are written, they are given to a copy editor, who corrects any mistakes and fits the articles into the newspaper’s format(版式). The makeup editor, with the managing editor, usually dec ides how the paper will look. The editor’s job is to decide whether a page will look. This editor’s job is to deicide whether a page will carry two stories and four ads or six stories and one ad. Editors may rewrite or redesign many of the pages as more stories come from the pressroom. 61. 2016年中考英语话题阅读理解专项练习 语言与学习(含答案)

语言与学习 一、阅读理解(共20小题;共40分) A British people have always been good at saying "I'm sorry". They used to be so good at it that they would apologize(道歉) for things that weren't even their fault. However, the British seem to be losing touch with their art. According to a new book by British writer Max Davidson, instead of saying "I'm sorry" when they do something wrong, British people prefer to choose their words carefully. In this book, Sorry—The Hardest Word and How to Use It, Davidson writes about a number of recent apologies. One example is of British television host Jeremy Clarkson. He described Gordon Brown, the UK prime minister (首相), as "a one-eyed Scottish idiot(笨蛋)". (Brown is blind in his left eye) Clarkson was forced to apologize. He said, "In the heat of the moment, I made a remark(评论) about the prime minister. Now I apologize of reflection." Davidson says the apology was just "going through the motions(做表面文章)". Clarkson is not the only one. The best example may come from the UK MP(议员) Tessa Jowell. She said publicly, "If you feel our government falls short of what you expect, then I say sorry for that." Jowell said "sorry". But she is actually saying it's not the government's fault but the voters' fault for expecting too much from the government. Perhaps those people with influence feel they may lose too much by apologizing. But as a teenager, would you really want to lose a close friend, just because you couldn't say something as simple as, "I'm sorry"? That would be hard to forgive. 1. Who was the improper description "a one-eyed Scottish idiot" used to describe? A. Max Davidson. B. Jeremy Clarkson. C. Gordon Brown. D. Tessa Jowell. 2. What does the underlined sentence in the second paragraph mean? A. The British are still good at apologizing. B. The British like to say sorry for everything they have done.
