Each of the passages is followedby 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C,D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWERSHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneI knew a man who was asked to be the new dean(院长)of the College of Business of a large university. When he first arrived, he studied the situation the college faced and felt that what it needed most was money. He recognized that he had a unique capacity to raise money, and he developed a real sense of vision about fund-raising as his primary function. This created a problem in the college because past deans had focused mainly on meeting day-to-day faculty needs. This new dean was never there. He was running around the country trying to raise money for research. But he was not attending to the day-to-day things as the previous dean had. The faculty, who were used to working with the person at the top,had to work through his administrative assistant. The faculty became so upset with his absence that they sent a delegationto the president of the university to demand a new dean or a fundamental change in his leadership style. The president, who knew what the dean was doing, said,”Relax. He has a good admi nistrative assistant.Give him some more time.”Within a short time, the money started pouring in and the faculty began to recognize the vision. It wasn’t long until every time they saw the dean, they would say,”Get out of here!We don’t want to see you. Go out and bring in more funds.Your administrative assistant runs this office better than anyone else.”This man admitted to me later that the mistake he made was not doingenough team building ,enough explaining, enough educating about what he was trying to accomplish. From him I learned a powerful lesson. We need toconstantly be asking ourselves,”What is needed out there, and what is my unique strength?”16. The new dean thought that the most important thing for him to do was to _D____.A.gain a sense of visionB.set up a primary goalC.win the trust of the facultyD. raise money17.The new dean was different from the past deans in that ___B_____.A.he was less responsibleB.he didn’t attend to daily thingsC.he had an adminis trative assistantD.he didn’t like to talk with others18.We can learn from the passage that the faculty __B___.A.was not well paid for their workB.didn’t understand the new dean’s ideas at firstC.had a conflict with the president of the universityD.didn’t want to work with the administrative assistant19. The faculty would ask the new dean to get out because they ____A___.A.were upset by his leadership styleB.wanted to get rid of himC.were unhappy with his explanationD.wanted him to bring back more money20.What was the mistake the new dean realized he had made?CA.He was absent all the year around.B.He was insensitive to the faculty’s needs.C.He didn’t communicate well with the faculty.D.He didn’t work hard to accomplish his goal.Passage TwoIs new technology damaging our ability to communicate?Fingersflying ,we can blog(写博客文章),email, and enter chat rooms. But ,as we type our millions of words, something is being lost.As our virtual skills increase,I wonder if our ability to communicate using speech is on the decline.Young people send me dozens of emails from schools and universities. They often attach long lists of questions,to which they want detailed responses. Time is short, so my reply is usually that they can phone me and I’ll do my best to answer. They very rarely do,at least partly because their oral and telephone skills are less developed than their ability to type, text and email.Yet to adapt an old business saying,a meeting is worth five phone calls and a phone call is worth five emails.Direct communication can quickly lead to bonding and trust.People are more likely to reveal what they are thinking when they actually speak to another person. Most are wary of committing themselves in writing. The great tragedy, of course,is that the phone was invented before the computer. If it had been the other way around,Internet forums would now be filled with the news:”Have you heard (type, type, type)? There is this amazing new device(type, type). Now you can talk directly withpeople(type, type, type).Without all this typing.”Marketing would do the rest and college would be rushing to develop new course in telephone skills. But,as it is ,we are stuck with the supremacy of the typed word and it is getting in the way of our ability to look people in the eye and talk. We should reconsider the technology in which the speed of our fingers is more important than the quality of our voices.21.According to the author, young people today don’t ___A___.A. like to communicate using speechB.like to communicate with peopleC.know how to communicate with peopleD.know how to ask questions in communication22. According to Paragraph 3, compared with meetings, e-mails are __C___.A.more efficientB. more interestingC.less efficientD.less interesting23. In Paragraph 4,”wary of ”can be replaced by “____B___”A.good atB.happy abouted toD.cautious about24. The author believes that if the phone had been invented after the computer, people would ___A________.A.be eager to learn how to use the phoneB.be glad to have both means of communicationC.still prefer typing words on the computerD.show little interest in the phone25.Which of the following can best describe the author’s attitude towards the communication using typed words today?AA.Concerned.B. Curious.C.Indifferent.D.Impatient.Passage ThreeMost Americans are very conscious of their health and try to maintain a nutritious diet and daily routines to maintain good health.Yet, for many years the tobacco and liquor industries have tried to project the image of style and fashion for those who use their products. Most have learned, however , that the dangers caused to health by tobacco and alcohol can no longer be denied or ignored. The campaigns to alert the public to the evils of these two social drugs have been intense and effective .However, most people dislike being warned that they shou ldn’t do something. It is a kind of psychological resistance.Yet, all tobacco and liquor products must now contain a warning on the package. The warning is simple, but the message is clear:smoking and drinking are hazardous to health. The wording may vary, but it is phrased in such a way as to draw the attention of the consumer to the danger. On TV all tobacco advertising is legally banned, and every ad in a magazine must display the warning. There are many public notices on trains and buses giving out the warning that smoking is linked to lung cancer and other lung and heart diseases. The warning against alcohol consumption is of a different kind.It goes out especially to women who are pregnant and anyone operating a car or electrical machinery. A pregnant woman can cause damage to her baby by drinking alcohol. Also anyone operating a machine runs the risk of an accident which could be fatal.Such warnings appear on all wine bottles and even an appatently harmless can of beer.26.Tobacco and liquor ads try to make people believe that smoking and drinking will ________C______.A.make them look fashionableB.help them keep a nutritious dietC.make them conscious of their healthD.show their healthy images to others27.In the case of smoking and drinking, most people __B______.A.ignore the campaigns against themB.are aware of the dangers they causeC.do not really believe their dangersD.participate in campaigns against them28.It can be inferred from the passage that the campaign against smoking is _____B_.A.short-livedB.long-standingC.widespreadD.well organized29.Tobacco advertising is __B_______.A.popularizedB.restrictedC.bannedD.disliked30.Warnings against drinking are usually directed at ____D_____.A.civiliansB.car driversC.young peopleD.some groups of peoplePassage FourToday, there is no such thing as a “typical”college student.People of all ages are enrolled in colleges.Though the concept of college may be the same for all students, the stress and future goals are different. The college students most people think of usually range in age from 18-21,and are most often away from home for the first time.As a result, they now have choices and no parent to tell them what to do. They are responsible for their own lives, needing to learn to manage their time and find a job, while attending school. They enter this new world with the anticipation of freedom, fun and a good job after graduation. The new faces in the college are usually 30 years old or older, and are returning to school after several years away. They are starting their college education, after raising a family and now ready to do something for themselves.Their lives are considerably different from their younger classmates. They have been on their own for a while, and are concerned about family, responsibilities, work, and the adjustment of being back in school after some years. Most important to them are the hopes of a new career or a job promotion after they graduate.Though they may come to college for different reasons, the result is the same, It is their chance to make a better life for themselves or theirfamilies. As the younger generation is looking for freedom in their lives, those who are returning to school also see freedom. The same opportunities were not available 20 years ago.So in our college and universities, there is a new sense of hope and dreams.Where once stood only the youth of our future, they are now joined by people of all ages who share the dreams of a better life.31.The passage is mainly concerned with the change of ______B__.A.college administrationB.college studentsC.college coursesD.college life32.

Reading and Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A) ,B) ,C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:America is the land of the automobile. This country has only 6 percent of theworld's population but 46 percent of the world's cars. Right now, there are 97 million privately owned cars consuming 75 billion gallons of gasoline and traveling an estimated 1,000 billion miles a year. The figures also affirm something we know every time we refill our gasoline tank. The automobile is a very thirsty piece of technology. Of the total petroleum supply in the UnitedStates, 30 percent goes to satisfy that thirst. Every year for each passenger car, about 800 gallons of gasoline are consumed.Other aspects of the automobile are worth reminding of here. It takes a great deal of energy to manufacture one automobile. We also expend energy in the process of shipping cars from factories to showrooms, displaying them for sale and making replacement parts for repairs. About two gallons of gasoline are consumed in the process of making every ten gallons that are pumped into an automobile's gas tank.Building highways and parking lots has used up much of our land. It has been estimated that we have paved over 21,000 square miles of this country's surface, most of it to accommodate the automobile. The automobile is also the largest contributor to our nation's air pollution problem.Apart fro m the great impact that wo uld occur if everyo ne serio usly practised conservatio n, one sho uld stop and think abo ut his own casual use of the auto mob ile. There are numerous situatio ns where better p lanning and awareness could really make a d ifference in energy savings and do llars. Because the auto mob ile uses the largest percentage of energy in an average American family's energy b udget and almost half o f the do llars, the impetus for saving is tremendo us.1. According to the author, most peop le realize that ____.A) other sources o f energy must be fo undB) great efforts have been made to so lve the energy prob lemC) the auto mob ile uses large amo unts of gaso lineD) it is the auto mob ile that causes the energy prob lem2. In fact, tho usands o f do llars o f merchand ise, ranging fro m autos, clothing, to electrical app liances are purchased by buyers thro ugh the cred it card. Credit cards have also been of significant importance to the natio nal eco no my. Businessmen have been encouraged to expand p lant and equip ment and hire add itio nal personnel to meet the heavy demand for their prod ucts. The tendency o f emp lo yment and inco me wo uld be to rise significantly.Unfo rtunately, the ease with which b uyers can increase their purchase with cred it cards have caused them to overlook the add itional costs. Purchases on cred it cards are postponed payments. Buy-now-and-pay-later enco urages b uyers to use cred it cards extensively.S ince the b uyer is in effect borrowing mo ney for a specific purpose, he must expect to pay an interest charge. Interest is the price o f using mo ney over a lo ng period of time. A close analysis o f the use o f cred it cards for heavy p urchases will show that the b uyer has added to the cost o f mak ing these purchases. It must also be kept in mind that unpaid mo nthly balances means added interest charges. Furthermore, the use o f cred it cards will add to the cost o f the product since the shopkeeper does not receive the mo ney at the time o f purchase. Shopkeeper might add o n the cost o f hand ling cred it cards to the bill.6. Interest charges fo r the use o f cred it cards reflect____.A) the cost o f owning a cred it cardB) the unpaid balance o f a mo nthly b illC) the shopkeeper's cost of hand ling cred it cardsD) the price o f using mo ney fo r a long period o f time10. The author o f the passage imp lies that____.A) credit cards tend to raise interest chargesB) buyers sho uld not use cred it cards at allC) buyers sho uld make p urchases with cred it cards cautio uslyD) the use o f cred it cards red uces the consump tio n possib ilities Questio ns 11 to 15 are based on the fo llowing passage:The modern age is an a ge o f electricity. Peop le are so used to electric lights radio televisio ns, and telepho nes that it is hard to imagine what life wo uld be like witho ut them. When there is a power failure, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to g uide them, and food spo ils in silent refrigerators.Yet, people began to understand ho w electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millio ns o f years. Scientists are d iscover ing more and more that the living world may ho ld many interesting secrets o f electricity that could benefit humanity. All living cells send o ut tiny pulses o f electricity. As the heart beats, it sends o ut p ulses, which can be recorded in an electrocard iogram, and a doctor can stud y it to determine how well the heart is work ing. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small--often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in so me animals, certain muscle cells have beco me so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers o f these cells are linked to gether, the effects can be astonishing. The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send as much as eight hundred vo lts o f electricity thro ugh the water in which it lives (An electric ho use current is only o ne hundred twenty vo lts.). As many as fo urfifths o f all the cells in the electric eel's body are specialized for generating electricity ,and the strength o f the shock it can deliver corresponds ro ughly to the length o f its bod y.11. What is the main idea o f the passage?A) Electric eels are dangero us.B) Bio lo gy and electricity appear to be closely related.C) People would be at a loss witho ut electricity.D) Scientists still have much to d isco ver abo ut electricity.12. It can be inferred that the lo nger an eel is, the_____.A) more beneficial it will be to scienceB) more powerful its electrical charge will beC) easier it will be to findD) tougher it will be to eatQuestio ns 16 to 20 are based on the follo wing passage:If it were only necessary to decide whether to teach elementary science to everyone on a mass basis or to find the gifted few and take them as far as they can go, our task would be fairly simp le. The pub lic schoo l system, however, has no such cho ice, for the jobs must be carried on at the same time. Because we depend so heavily upon science and techno lo gy for o ur progress, we must produce specialists in many fields. Because we live in a democratic nation, whose citizens make the po licies for the natio n, large numbers of us must be educated to understand, to support ,and when necessary ,to judge the work of experts. The public school must educate both producers and users of scientific services. In educatio n, there should be a good balance among the branches of knowledge that contrib ute to effective think ing and wise jud gement. Such balance is defeated by too much emphasis on any one field. This questio n of balance invo lves not only the relation o f the natural sciences, the social scie nces, and the arts but also relative emp hases amo ng the natural sciences themselves.Similarly, we must have a balance between current and classical knowledge. The attention o f the pub lic is continually drawn to the discovery of new knowled ge; these should not be allowed to turn o ur attention away fro m the sound ,established materials that form the basis o f courses for beginners.16. According to the first paragraph, the task of educatio n is fairlycomp licated because_____.A) the current p ub lic school system is too comp lex to be understoodB) the public school has no cho ice of what to teachC) it is difficult to choose what to teach in pub lic schoolsD) the educators have to take care of both ordinary and gifted students17. The word "defeated" in paragraph 2 most probably means_____.A) broken B) destroyedC) beaten D) damaged18. Which of the fo llowing is NOT included in the passage?A) We depend much on science and technolo gy for our progress.B) The educators are required to lay emphasis o n so me particularfield.C) A democratic natio n needs a lot of well-educated citizens.D) Elementary science should be taught on a mass basis in pub licschools.19. What can be inferred fro m the last paragraph?A) Most people take great interest in classical knowledge.B) Classical k nowledge is more popular than current knowledge.C) Sufficient attentio n sho uld be given to basic knowled ge.D) The attentio n of the public sho uld not be drawn to new knowledge.20. English-Chinese TranslationDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET. (10 points,10%)The 1960s saw the great civil rights movement whose goals were to end segregation(种族隔离)laws completely and fight for the equal rights for the colored people. Many American blacks began to have a new mood. They declared that "black is beautiful",and the black community showed signs of unprecedented self confidence.(1)Equally important, many black leaders began to disclaim full integrations into the American mainstream as the goal of the black minority.(2)Instead, they argued, blacks ought to coexist with other groups in a plural society containing different and distinctive communities living in mutual respect. The elimination of legal barriers to advancement has been a major gain for the blacks, but institutionalized discrimination is still rife. Housing, in particular, remains highly segregated: the great majority of blacks continue to live in neighborhoods that are overwhelmingly black, and most whites live in neighborhoods that areoverwhelmingly white.(3)Busing and other programs aimed at integrating the schools have had some impact in inner city areas but have made virtually no difference to the segregation that exists between the predominantly black urban centers and the predominantly white suburbs and small towns that surround them. Median family income of blacks rose from 230 in 1960to 142 in 1977,but the median income of white families rose at least as fast, and the income gap between the two groups has widened in recent years.(4)A major source of this differential is the fact that blacks tend to be barred from positions of authority over other workers, and are restricted instead to lower paying jobs further down the work place hierarchy. This factor alone accounts for about a third of the total black white income gap.(5)Race relations between black and white still leave much to be desired, although there is unmistakable evidence of some improvements in attitudes. However, there is a sharp divergence between the races on the question of how much progress has been made in ending discrimination. The majority of whites believe that there has been a lot of progress in getting rid of discrimination, but more than half of the blacks felt that there has not been much real change. Each passages is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:A third of Britons are overweight, states a report published in January by the Royal College of Physicians, the result of an 18-month-long study. About five per cent of the children weigh too much, and are likely to stay that way for life; in the mid-twenties age group the proportion of fat people rises to a third, and of the middle-age population half are overweight.Fat people risk severe health problem, says the report, including high blood pressure, breathlessness, and various forms of heart disease. Smoking is particularly risky for overweight people. The safest way to lose weight is to eat cereals, bread, fruit and vegetables, and cut down on fatty meats, butter and sweet foods. Fat diets do far more harm than good; slimming machines that vibrate muscles have not been proved useful; saunas merely remove a little body water, and health farms, says the report, serve as expensive holidays.Exercise is most important to health, the report emphasizes; though it doesn't necessarily reduce weight, it maintains the correct proportion of body fat to body muscle. And it isn't only for the young. From middle age a minimum of 20 minutes of gentle physical jerks should be practiced three times a week. The report advocates several public health measures to combat the high prevalence of overweight in this country. They include an increase of tax on alcohol to reduce its increasing, and dangerously fattening, consumption; and the provision of more sports facilities by local authorities. Britain's doctors, the report concludes, must learn to be more sympathetic and specific in their advice to the overweight, encouraging a change in eating habits on a long-term basis, and taking into account the many -often complex - reasons why fat people are fat31. The simple reason for this is that there are more different ways of looking at things present in the first kind of society. There are more ideas, more disagreements in interest, and more groups and organizations with different beliefs. In addition, there is usually a greater worldly interest and greater tolerance in mixed societies. All these factors tend to promote social change by opening more areas of life to decision. In a society where people are quite similar in many ways, there are fewer occasions for people to see the need or the opportunity for change because everything seems to be the same. And although conditions may not be satisfactory, they are at least customary and undisputed.Within a society, social change is also likely to occur more frequently and more readily in the material aspects of the culture than in the non-material, for example, in technology rather than in values; in what has been learned later in life rather than what was learned early; in the less basic and less emotional aspects of society than in their opposites; in the simple elements rather than in the complex ones; in form rather than in substance; and in elements that are acceptable to the culture rather than in strange elements.Furthermore, social change is easier if it is gradual. For example, it comes more readily in human relations on a continuous scale rather than one with sharp dichotomies(一分为二). This is one reason why change has not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to other American minorities, because of the sharp difference in appearance between them and their white counterparts.41. The passage is mainly discussing _______.更多资讯请留意:中大青年网A. two different societiesB. the necessity of social changeC. certain factors that determine the ease with which social changes occurD. certain factors that promote social change42. ______ is one of the factors that tend to promote social change.A. The expression greater tolerance(paragraph 1)refers to _____.A. greater willingness to accept social changeB. quicker adaptation to changing circumstancesC. more respect for different beliefs and behaviorD. greater readiness to agree to different opinions and ideas44. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. Social change tends to meet with more difficulty in basic and emotional aspects of society.B. Disagreement with and argument about conditions tend to slow down social change.C. Social change is more likely to occur in the material aspect of society.D. Social change is less likely to occur in what people learned when they were young.45. Why has change not come more quickly to Black Americans as compared to white people?A. Black people used to be slavesB. White people are of more different originsC. Black people are poorD. White people like to make shape changePassage fourQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:Most employers say that they wish to employ the right person for the right job. A recent report by Britain's Independent Institute of Manpower Studies, however, disagrees with this. The report states that most employers wish to avoid employing the wrong person. Rather than looking for the right person, they are looking for applicants to turn down. The report also suggests that in Britain and in many other parts of the world, the selection methods used to pick out the right person for the job certainly do not match up to those used to judge a piece of new equipment. Employers used three main selection methods: interviewing, checking resume or application forms and examining references. Most of the employers asked in this survey stated that these selection methods were used more for “weeding out” unsuitable applicants rather than for finding suitable ones.Interviews were considered to be more reliable than either resume checks or references from past employers. Research, however, proves otherwise. Interviewers’ decisions are often strongly influenced by their earlier judgment of the written application. Also, different employers view facts differently. One may consider applicants who have frequently changed jobs as people with broad and useful experience. Another will see such applicants as unreliable and unlikely to stay for long in the new job.更多资讯请留意:中大青年网Some employers place great importance on academic qualifications whereas the link between this and success in management is not necessarily strong. Some employers use handwriting as a standard. The report states that there is little evidence to support the value of the latter for judging working ability. References, also, are sometime unreliable as they are not very important, while checks on credit and security records and applicants' political opinions are often the opposite. The report is more favorable towards trainability tests and those which test personality and personal and mental skills. The report concludes by suggesting that interviewing could become more reliable if the questions were arranged in a careful, organized system and focused on the needs of the employing organization.46. According o the passage, when most employers want to hire workers, _______.A. they will try to find suitable peopleB. they will look for the right applicantC. the wrong applicants are to be turned downD. to turn down the wrong people is what they say they aim to do47. It is implied that ______.A. to evaluate a right person is more difficult than to evaluate equipmentB. employers are more successful in selecting the right equipment than the right personsC. criteria will be set up according to the real situation of the applicantsD. curriculum vitae means application forms48. Which of the following is True?A. Employers get different conclusions from the facts.B. Changing jobs frequently will reduce the change to be recruited.C.
