A

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up and down America‘s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn‘t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.

I watched such a moment not long ago at a woman‘s funeral. I didn‘t expect the eve nt to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.

The teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: ―I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would truly attack her, what would Nana say? ?oh, what beautiful barking that dog has!‘ That was Nana. ‖

―She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for my grandpa‘s career,‖ he said, with a voice now trembling, ―That was Nana‘s way.‖

Through a low sob, he continued, ―Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you‘d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to show off.‖

Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and said, ―Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana‘s way, and I hope I can carry on in the same manner.‖

There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven‘t learned to be controlled.

When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ceremony. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.

All over again we felt those powerful losses crossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

43. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The boy‘s speech moved no one present at the funeral except the writer.

44. What words can best describe grandmother‘s quality?

A. Weak, wise, mild and modest

So far, scientists have named about 1.8 million living species, and that‘s just a small part of what probably exists on Earth. With so many plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms covering the planet,it can be tough to figure out what type of spider is crawling up your leg or what kind of bird just flew by.

A soon-to-be-launched Website might help. An international team of researchers has announced the creation of a Web-based Encyclopedia of Life(EOL).The project aims to catalogue every species on Earth in a single,easy-to-use reference guide.

To get the encyclopedia started, the creators will use information from scientific databases that already exist. And eventually,in special sections of the site, nonscientists with specialized knowledge will join. Gardeners, for example, will be able to record the dates that their flowers first bloom each year. Bird-watchers will be able to input which birds they‘ve seen and where. The technology for this kind of tool has only recently become available.

As the EOL develops, you might find it useful for school projects. The site will have special pages for kids who are studying ecosystems in their neighborhoods. To make sure the encyclopedia is accurate, scientists will review much of the information added to it. People who visit the site will be able to choose to skip pages that haven‘t been reviewed.

Another convenient characteristic of the EOL is that you‘11 be able to pick the level of detail you see to match your interests, age, and current knowledge. If you wanted to learn about polar bears for a science class report, for example, you could use the ―novice‖ setting to get basic information about the animals. On the ―expert‖ setting,on the other hand, you could get much more detailed information about the history, literature, and exploration of polar bears.

It now takes years for scientists to collect all the data they need to describe and analyze species. The creators of the Encyclopedia of Life hope that their new tool will speed that process.

Keep an eye on https://www.doczj.com/doc/5110246232.html,. Pages will begin to go up sometime next year, and you might find them useful for your school reports. The EOL team might have the basics for all 1.8 million entries online as early as 2017.Someday,you might add your own notes.

Women nowadays do not just want to work to help meet the rising costs of living and education for their children. They also want a career that will enable them to bring out their skills and use their potentials so that they can experience a sense of fulfillment and pride that come from achievements and success. Some careers that have

been traditionally dominated(支配)by the male species have been made open and filled up by women as well. It is no longer a surprising occurrence today to see many women working as pilots, astronauts, engineers, in construction sites, and in the printing business that operates high-tech machines.

Many women are also taking their chances on managerial and executive positions that mostly men are the ones sitting on. Many of them also do well in the line of education as teachers, deans and even presidents of universities. You can also see many women as lecturers and reviewers of different businesses. One example is that of the online printing company reviews where women usually have a say on what is the best choice for online printers for any marketing needs.

From the income that women are getting from their work, they are able to maintain a family and able to provide a better education for their children and able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

However, there are still pronounced biases (偏见) against women in high leadership positions. There still exists the so-called gender-role stereotyping. Women need help to cope with and manage the typical stereotyping of women workers and managers. Those who look for jobs advertised in the classified sections of the newspaper often discover that many corporate positions are closed to women. And most often than not, many give preference to men by indicating in their ads phrases such as ―male preferred‖ or ―male applicants only.‖ Even in some family run or owned corporations, seldom can you see women managers and presidents.

Surveys show that although a man and a woman have the same level or handle the same position in an organization, the man would get a higher or bigger compensation package (薪酬) compared to women. Because of this, many women are just contented to be in subordinate positions in finance, human resources, sales, manufacturing and other supportive roles.

There are still other barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potentials in the world of employment. Our culture does not encourage women to excel in government and in business-related jobs. Women who are able to make it on top and handle leadership roles are sometimes regarded merely as tokens. The abilities and skills of women are normally questioned by their own peers, and sadly even by other women.

If you are a woman who have the interest, ability and drive to pursue management careers, career counseling is of great help to help you find direction and increase motivation to pursue your career goals. It will help you have the self-confidence to get you in the same career opportunities open to men in this society that still prefers men for top level positions.

Tips for Saving Money in College

College can be an expensive endeavor, even with many kinds of financial aid. Everything from textbooks, food, supplies and entertainment —these will all cost you money. There‘s no getting around it. However, there are easy ways to save. Here are several ways to avoid the constant panic of going broke.

61._______

Instead of driving to class and spending money on gas, parking passes and possible tickets look into a local bus or subway system. If the system is run by your university, you‘ll probably be able to ride for free with a student ID. If such a system doesn‘t exist (or the existing one isn‘t safe or reliable), try to work out class sched ules with friends and carpool. If you‘re close enough, walk or bike to class and get some much-needed exercise.

62._______

Banks usually cater to college students by offering free checking and savings accounts, allowing you to avoid fees on withdrawals (取款), fund transfers or the minimum amount allowed in the account. Make sure online banking is an option, as this makes it easier to follow your activity. Keep track of your account — overdrafting (透支)will only cost you more in fees. So, do what it takes to stay out of the red as much as possible.

63._______

It might seem like a hassle, but saving receipts of everything you purchase is a great way to monitor your spending habits. Try it out for a month. When your thirty days are up, add up all of your expenses and see where your money went. You‘d be surprised at how easy it is to cut back on unnecessary spending.

64._______

Everyone needs to unwind after studying, and college campuses typically offer all sorts of opportunities — movie theaters, bars, cafes, arts centers, parks, downtown shopping centers, et cetera. Ask if any of these places can offer student discounts. You can also think of alternative ways to have a good time. If you make the right choices and use a bit of creativity, you can have fun and save money at the same time. Plan a picnic in the park; make dinner for a date instead of going to a fancy restaurant; go for a bike ride around town; play Frisbee golf on campus. Any of these activities can cost a fraction of the typical college experience and can be more fun.

65._______

If you can fit it into your busy class schedule, that is a great way to bring in some extra income and give you some more flexibility with your spending. Waiting at tables or delivering food can bring in great tips, and college-town restaurants are almost always looking for new help. A great way to earn some money and get some studying done is to work at your university‘s library. It‘s not a very demanding job and is usually quiet, so you can read for class and get paid at the same time.

A In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719— but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad. In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim— were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It’s partly t hat his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible —and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one. 21. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century
