第二节:完形填空(共20题;每小题1分,满分20分)

阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从21—40各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Manners nowadays in big cities like London are particularly non-existent. It’s 21 for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside for the last 22 seat on the bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her, as he ought to. In fact, it is a 23 to note that if a man does offer his seat to an older woman, it is nearly always a man of the older 24 .

This question of 25 seats in public transport is much argued by young men, who say that, since women have claimed 26 , they no longer deserve to be treated 27 and that those who go out to work should take their turn in the rat race like anyone else. Women have never claimed to be 28 as strong as men. Even if it’s not 29 that young men should stand up for older women, however, the fact remains that good manners should be shown to the old, the 30 and the burdened. Are we really so lost to all ideals of 31 that we can sit there calmly reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves “First come, first served”, while a gray-haired woman, or a mother with a young child stands? 32 this is too often seen.

Older people, tired and easily 33 from a day’s work, aren’t angels, either. Many a sudden argument or a fierce quarrel 34 as the tired people push and pull each other to get on buses or tubes.

If cities are to remain pleasant places to 35 in at all, however, it seems necessary, not only that communication in 36 should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and 37 . Shop assistants won’t bother to 38 , taxi drivers shout at each other as they drive dangerously round corners, bus conductors pull the bell 39 their desperate passengers have had time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it’s up to the young and strong to do their small 40 to stop such “worsening”.

21. A. something B. nothing C. anything D. everything

22. A. good B. comfortable C. ideal D. remaining

23. A. pity B. pleasure C. surprise D. sight

24. A. kind B. race C. generation D. tradition

25. A. taking up B. handing over C. putting away D. giving up

26. A. right B. equality C. position D. respect

27. A. specially B. equally C. carefully D. warmly

28. A. clearly B. socially C. physically D. legally

29. A. said B. agreed C. reported D. considered

30. A. young B. poor C. rich D. sick

31. A. determination B. generosity C. peace D. unselfishness

32. A. Yet B. Also C. Instead D. Rather

第二部分:阅读理解(第一节20小题,第二节5小题; 每小题2分, 满分50分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist and philosopher (哲学家). Originally trained as a botanist (植物学家), he developed one of the most important theories of cognitive (认知的) development in the field of developmental psychology. He was born in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. As the son of a university professor, Jean Piaget was of great intelligence and interested in the natural world and the subject of biology. Jean Piaget was growing up during a time when Sigmund Freud’s theory and practice of psychoanalysis (心理分析) was developing and becoming popular, which also influenced his interests.

After graduating from his university, Jean Piaget moved to Paris and taught at a school directed by Alfred Binet, who developed standardized intelligence tests that are still used today. As he helped to score Alfred Binet’s tests, Jean Piaget noticed patterns of errors made by younger children but not by older children and adults. He personally believed that young children thought differently from adults. This was the beginning of what would eventually become his theory of progressive, distinct states of cognitive development that people go through universally as they grow.

Jean Piaget went from France back to Switzerland in 1921, where he directed the Rousseau Institute in Geneva. When he and his wife had three children of their own, he studied their behavior and learning from their births and through their childhoods. He used the techniques of direct observation and the case study, a method of developing a thorough understanding of each individual child. Piaget described children as “little scientists” who learned through exploring and acting upon their environments.

Jean Piaget said in his theory that in learning, just as in biology, humans adapted to their environments through processes of assimilation (同化) and accommodation (适应). He said that babies formed mental constructs to represent their world, which he called schemata (图式). A new boy assimilates new information by fitting it into an existing schema. When it will not fit, the child accommodates to it by changing an existing schema or forming a new one. Because of his stress on children’s roles in actively constructing their own knowledge of reality, Jean Piaget has been called a great pioneer of constructivism – the theory that people acquire knowledge based on interactions (互动) between their thoughts and experiences.

41. From the passage we can learn that at first Jean Piaget’s interest was in ______.

A. botany

B. psychology

C. philosophy

D. intelligence test

42. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is correct about Jean Piaget?

A. He developed standardized intelligence tests with Alfred Binet.

B. He found the tests were not suitable for younger children.

C. He realized that younger children and adults didn’t think in the same way.

D. He proved his theory with the results of the tests.

43. Jean Piaget observed his children’s behavior and learning to ______.

A. make sure that they were behaving properly

B. find out how children acquire knowledge

C. find out a better way for them to learn efficiently

D. see whether they could be scientists in the future

44. Based on his observation and the case study, Jean Piaget declared that ______.

A. children were all little scientists

B. children were good at adapting to environments

C. children formed schemas to represent the real world

D. children’s learning abilities were equal at birth

45. According to Jean Piaget’s theory, which is more important in acquiring knowledge?

Experiences.

A. Teachers.

Holiday hotspots: where to go in 2015

Looking for inspiration for this year’s holiday? We’ve selected several hot destinations for 2015, each with a fresh reason to visit, from new railways, hotels, arts events and festivals to a solar eclipse (日蚀)…

Kanazawa, Japan

Kanazawa was one of the few Japanese cities to escape major destruction during the second world war. As a result, it is able to show off its traditional culture: from the Nagamachi quarter with its samurai residencies (武士居所) to the teahouses of Higashi Chayagai–a district with the only geisha (艺妓) community outside Kyoto. In March, a new high-speed train line will make the city more accessible than ever, cutting the journey time from Tokyo to Kanazawa from four hours to two-and-a-half. Inside Japan Tours offers a 14-night Traditional Japan self-guided trip from £1,360pp (based on two sharing) including 14 nights’ B&B accommodation, some meals, and all domestic transport (excludes international flights).

Haiti

One for the adventurous traveler, Haiti is set to welcome more visitors in 2015 with several operators, from Wild Frontiers to G Adventures and Exodus, running trips for the first time. Five years on from the terrible earthquake, the country claims it is ready for tourism, offering an authentic Caribbean experience with an amazing arts scene, the largest fortress in the Americas and unique Creole culture among the highlights. A 10-day trip with G Adventures costs from £1,599, excluding flights.

Nicaragua

Though it’s been peaceful for 25 years, the largest Central American country remains one of the least-visited. It’s a land of rainforests (Indio Maíz biological reserve is the largest area of virgin rainforest north of the Amazon), lakes and volcanoes, with deserted beaches, and incredible wildlife. Things look set to change, though, as the country opens up – an airport opened recently on Ometepe island. A bridge is being built over the San Juan river, connecting Nicaragua with Costa Rica. There’s been a boom in luxury hotel openings, one of the latest being Mukul on the Emerald Coast. Journey Latin America has a one-off group tour in May visiting Ometepe island and the Solentiname islands in Lake Nicaragua plus a cruise on the San Juan river. The 17-day trip costs £2,098pp, excluding international flights.

Faroe Islands

A tiny 18-island archipelago (群岛) roughly halfway between Iceland and Scotland, with nearly twice as many sheep as people, the Faroe Islands have a romantic appeal for travelers looking for a remote, back-to-nature experience. In March, the islands will be one of only two places in the world to see the total solar eclipse (the Norwegian islands of Svalbard being the other). It’s a great reason to visit the Faroes – a magical world of waterfalls and huge bird colonies. There’s a thrilling cultural scene, too – festivals and boat races in traditional Faroese boats fill the summer months – but among the most intimate and left-field is Hoyma, a new music festival held each November, which takes place in locals’ sitting rooms. Most hotels are booked now for the eclipse, but there are still B&

B and camping options: see solareclipse.fo. Flights are via Copenhagen or Oslo with Atlantic Airways.

46. We can learn from the above passage that ______.

A. the daily cost of a trip to Haiti is the lowest

B. during the second world war Kanazawa was mostly destroyed

C. Nicaragua and Costa Rica are quite close to each other

D. Haiti will be open to visitors in 2015 for the first time in history

47. Kanazawa is recommended as a hotspot for 2015 because ______.

A. transportation will be more convenient

B. travelling expenses will be much lower than before

C. similar traditional culture can’t be seen anywhere else

D. unique musical festivals are held regularly there

48. A German tourist who hates long distance flights had better go to ______.

A. Nicaragua

B. Faroe Islands

C. Kanazawa

D. Haiti

49. Which travel agency should he turn to if one wants to have a trip enjoying both natural scenery and wild

animals?

A. Inside Japan Tours.

B. G Adventures.

C. Wild Frontiers.

D. Journey Latin America.

I suppose many people agree that losing weight is such an important topic for girls in Hong Kong. You can tell by the number of advertisements in the MTR stations, magazines and even on TV promoting the importance of it… in your everyday life. If you walk in the streets in Hong Kong, you will find that the majority of women are fairly skinny, maybe skinnier than they need to be because I guess if they are not in good shape, they know that if they are not in good shape, they’ll be considered ugly or in general not attractive at all. There was a piece of news that a girl in high school had killed herself because she was considered fat and had been consistently teased by her peers (同龄人) or been called names by her peers, and she couldn’t take the pressure and I guess she had the concept of being fat is generally a sin (罪恶).

In fact I myself have tried different ways of losing weight. The first method that I’ve tried was go to beauty salons (美容厅) regularly and there are of course pros and cons of doing that. One of the pros is that it’s really fast and it’s quite effective in fact. Of course the biggest con is that it’s quite costly - it can cost you from say 5000 grand to more than 10,000 grand depending on how many days or how many courses you open. And the other con is that it in fact rebounds quite quickly if you don’t go to the beauty salons on a regular basis. And other than going to the beauty salon, you can also control your diet by eating less than you usually do but it can really be a killer if you are a food lover like me and it’s sometimes hard to maintain the diet.

And the third method that I tried was to sleep earlier than I usually do, which is around, say 11 pm. I think it is really a good method or it’s really good for your health because it keeps your metabolism

going. And also to sleep late, say 2 am, usually you’ll get hungry and you’ll grab a supper too, meaning that you will consume more food than you really need to. And the fourth method that I tried, that I finally tried, which is by far the most effective method was to work out, or to go to the gym regularly, not that it helps you to achieve your goal – to lose weight and it is actually not difficult to do because if you go to the gym or run every day for at least half an hour or say just half an hour, you can achieve your goal within one month. And also noticed myself getting healthier because it improves my blood circulation, and I guess less tired and I start to perform well or better at work as well. And people say that your brains produce what I call the happy hormones (荷尔蒙) after you finish your work out and I really like the feeling of being happy especially if I go to the gym after work and it’s a great stress reliever.

And in summary I think that it is not a bad idea to lose weight on a regular basis because you get a better appearance by doing that, and that generally does improve one’s self-confidence. And also if you work out to lose weight, obviously you get a healthier body, which is one of the, or I say the most important thing for life.

50. The writing purpose of the passage is to ______.

A. introduce various effective ways to lose weight

experiences of losing weight

C. persuade readers to lose weight for their health

D. encourage readers to be confident despite their being overweight

51. The number of advertisements is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to ______.

A. convince readers that being fat is not acceptable in modern society

B. tell readers why most of the girls in Hong Kong are so thin

C. persuade readers to lose weight as soon as possible

D. show losing weight is an important topic in Hong Kong

52. It can be inferred from the above passage that ______.

A. girls who are not thin enough are usually ugly

B. most people agree being overweight is actually a sin

C. many girls lose weight because of pressure from peers

D. customers are often cheated in the beauty salons

53. The writer’s favorite way to lose weight is most probably ______.

A. going to beauty salons

B. eating less than usual

C. sleeping earlier than usual

D. exercising regularly

54. In the writer’s eyes, the best part of working out to lose weight is that ______.

A. you can get a healthy body as well

B. it can help relieve your stress

C. you will feel happy after working out

D. it improves your performance at work

D

I grew up in a small town where the primary school was a ten-minute walk from my house and in an age, not so long ago, when children could go home for lunch and find their mothers waiting.

At the time, I did not consider this a luxury, although today it certainly would be. I thought it was just what a mother should do. I never questioned that this ambitious, intelligent woman, who had had a career before I was born and would eventually return to a career, would spend almost every lunch hour throughout my primary school years just with me.

I only knew that when the noon bell rang, I would race breathlessly home. My mother would be standing at the top of the stairs, smiling down at me with a look that suggested I was the only important thing she had on her mind. For this, I am forever grateful.

Day by day, our time together went, unchangeable.

One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always. I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had carefully practiced my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head.

Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator’s (解说员) part to the play, and asked me to switch roles. Her word, kindly delivered, still was painful, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.

I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease, and instead of suggesting we rehearse my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.

It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine (藤) was turning green. Under the huge elm trees, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) sticking out through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with gold. I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the bunches. “I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling one up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.” “But I like dandelions,” I said. “All flowers are beautiful-even dandelions.” My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that.”

Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled kindly.

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her. “The narrator’s part is every bit as important as the part of a princess.”

Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes were spent reading over my lines and talking about what I would wear.

Backstage the night of the performance, I felt nervous. A few minutes before the play, my teacher came over to me. “Your mother asked me to give this to you,” she said, handing me a dandelion. Just looking at it, knowing my mother was out there and thinking of our lunchtime talk, made me proud.

After the play, I took home the flower and my mother pressed it between two sheets of paper in our old family dictionary, laughing as she did it that we were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.

I often look back on our lunchtimes together, bathed in the soft midday light. They were the commas (逗号) in my childhood, the pauses that told me life is enjoyed in the sum of daily rituals (仪式) and small pleasures we casually share with loved ones. Over peanut-butter sandwiches and chocolate-chip cookies, I learned that love, first and foremost, means being there for the little things.

第二节:下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句(第61—65题)。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出适合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. Rely on credit cards.

B. Avoid using credit cards.

C. Live beyond your means.

D. Skip retirement savings.

E. Neglect financial management.

F. Fail to negotiate the first salary.

Five Money Mistakes New Graduates Make

Here’s a look at five common money mistakes new graduates make — and how to avoid them.

61. ______ In this competitive job market, you may be so thrilled to have an offer that you scarcely think twice about the salary. But your first salary will set the bar for your earning potential throughout your career, so

negotiating a slightly higher starting salary can bring you huge advantages down the road. “It is beneficial to negotiate because that will all have long-term effects on how much you’ll be earning over the course of a lifetime,” says Michelle Dosher, managing editor for consumer publications at the Credit Union National Association. “It is OK to negotiate.” Do your research on what someone in your role with your level of experience can expect to earn in that market.

62. ______ For recent grads earning their first full-time salary, there are all kinds of temptations (诱惑). With friends spending money freely on stylish new furniture or nights out at the bar, it’s easy to get carried away. This occurs when your standard of living suddenly balloons, and it can be difficult to cut back later once you get used to expensive meals. “Young adults want a certain lifestyle and they want it now,” Dosher says. “Treating yourself to a few things is fine, but trying to stay mindful of what you’re spending is best.” Poor college students know how to score cheap grub and host parties at home, and there’s no shame in continuing these habits for a few years as you find your financial footing.

63. ______ As you’re establishing yourself in a new job and a new apartment, you may need to charge a few work-appropriate suits or other essentials. However, if you get into the habit of charging things you don’t truly need (pizza delivery, tech toys, designer bags), you could quickly find yourself drowning in debt. “I urge young adults to be very careful while they’re using credit and not charge more than they can afford to pay off monthly,” Dosher says.

64. ______ This may come as a surprise after the previous point, but avoiding credit cards entirely can produce an opposite result. “It’s really important to establish credit in your own name,” Dosher says. “A strong credit history will pay off in the future for young adults when they want to buy a house or buy a car.” If you can’t get approved for a traditional credit card, look into a secured credit card (where you put down a deposit and that serves as your credit limit until you graduate to an unsecured card) or a credit-builder loan (which is designed to help you build a positive credit history).

65. ______ “Many young adults don’t see the benefit of saving for retirement because they’re very young and they’re paying other bills,” Dosher says. “I would stress the importance of saving for retirement while you’re young, because of compounding interest.” If your employer offers a 401(k) match – a special account in which people can save some of the money they earn for their retirement without paying taxes on it, take advantage of that because it’s essentially free money.

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc.
