They stood outside the door--two children in shabby outgrown coats.

“Any old papers, lady?”

I was busy. I wanted to say no until I saw the snow on the clothes. And their little sandals(凉鞋)were also covered with snow.

“Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”

There was no conversation.Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor.I served them cocoa and toast with jam to strengthen them against the cold outside. Then 1 went back to the kitchen and started again on my household.

The silence in the front room got me to look inside. The girl held the empty cup in her hands,

looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?"

“Am I rich? Mercy, no!”

I looked at my shabby sofa. The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully.

“Your cups match your saucers.” she said.

They left then, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you. They didn’t need to. They had done more than that.Plain blue cups and saucers were only worth five pence, but they matched.

I tasted the potatoes and looked at the meat. Potatoes and meat, the roof over my head, my man with a good steady job—these things matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and tidied the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor. I let them be. I wanted them there in case I ever forget again how very rich I am.

Research scientists say they have discovered a new drug that will help the fight against the disease tuberculosis(肺结核). Experts say it has been shown in animal experiments to clear tuberculosis bacterium two times faster than other medicines. Scientists have just begun to test the experimental drug in people.

Tuberculosis infects at least eight million people each year.It also is one of the leading causes of death around the world. Only AIDS more.

Tuberculosis spreads easily through the air, by coughing, sneezing or even talking. But people infected with the tuberculosis bacterium will not necessarily become sick. The organism can live in the body for years before becoming active.

Koen Andries led the effort to develop the new drug. He said the new drug is the first such medicine to be tested in people since rifampin was developed in 1963.

Today, rifampin is used with two other medicines to treat tuberculosis. The drugs must be taken for up to nine months. But experts say the treatment is no longer effective against the disease in many parts of the world. They say this is because the bacterium has developed defenses against the treatment. Doctors say the resistance resulted from patients failing to follow directions

for the medicines.

Doctor Andries says the new drug works differently than other ones. It blocks the energy supply of the organism, He also says the drug appears to be most effective when given with the older drugs.

Limited human tests of the new drug have shown that it is safe. But some researchers warn that it may not work as well in people as it has in mice.

60. According to the passage,we can conclude that _________.

A. it's easy to treat tuberculosis if you follow the doctor’s directions

B. tuberculosis causes the second largest number of deaths each year

C. the new drug won’t develop resistance against the treatment

D. Andries worked Out the new drug alone

61. What's the purpose of the writer? He wants to ________.

A. say that AIDS is more dangerous than tuberculosis

B. tell us that the new drug will be sure to remove the patient’s pain

C. say that being healthy is most important to us

D. introduce a new research result

62. We can infer from the passage that

A. the new drug is more effective on mice

B. the new drug can also treat the AIDS

C. people began to use the new drug to treat tuberculosis

D. we must be careful when using the new drug

63. What does the underlined word “It” in the last paragraph but one refer to?

A. Tuberculosis

B. A new drug

C. A treatment

D. A bacterium

MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people. MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like. Started two years ago, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.

Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it. Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’ worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.

For teenagers, it is a reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after-school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information.

“MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone. I don't have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if 1 want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,” said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16-year-old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

Parents on the other hand are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace.

“Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about MySpace.” said Kent Cates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars(研讨会). The National Centre for missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace-relatcd complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburg, “Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web. And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It's like a free checklist for trouble-makers and it endangers children.”Buchanan said.

64. From the passage,we can learn that MySpace __________.

A. brings about the generation gap

B. is very careful about people's privacy

C. encourages you to list your personal information D.1ists the telephone nnmbers of your friends

65. Why are some parents against MySpace?

A. Because they think MySpace has a bad influence on their children.

B. Because they don't want to pay so much money for MySpace.

C. Because it takes up too much of their children's spare time.

D. Because trouble-makers can easily approach their children through the site.

66. What can we infer from“Every time we hold a parents meeting.the first question is always

about MySpace”?

A. MySpace has become a top issue troubling parents.

B. MySpace often holds parents meetings.

“The exhibition, the Forbidden Empire, was designed so that visitors can observe both the relationships and the differences between the two groups’ painters in terms of themes, techniques, and visions,” said Yu Hui, the Chinese curator of the show.

第二节简答题(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)

阅读下面短文.根据文后各题的具体要求回答问题。

Airport security has been tightened after the terrorist attacks of September 11. When people fly, their identity is carefully checked. This, at least, eliminates known dangerous people but, of course, can not help with new recruits (新成员) or cases of forged documents. More important is the effort to keep passengers from bringing on board anything that could be used as a weapon. For this purpose, all passengers have to pass through a metal detector. These work by means of a series of very brief magnetic fields. Metal objects affect these fields as they disappear, and in fact make them last a few microseconds longer than normal. The machine Call recognize this and then sends an audio signal to alert staff. When this happens, the passenger will be subject to a more detailed search to establish what is causing the detection to react.

Passengers’ luggage passes on a conveyor belt through an X-ray machine. This sends out electro-magnetic waves. Since different materials absorb X-rays at different levels, with a little help from a computer, the operator can see distinct items in people’s bags. The display monitor usually shows different types of materials in different colors. Explosives usually appear orange. Operators also look for suspicious shapes and items. If they have any doubts, the passenger will be asked to open the bag for inspection.

Complex electronic equipment, such as laptop computers, offers a considerable challenge to detectors. It is almost impossible to know what is hidden in one just by looking. Some airports tackle this with “c hemical sniffers” that can detect traces of chemicals used in explosives.

73. Find a word in the passage similar in menning to the word in bold “distinct”.

________________________________________________________

74. Why do all passengers have to get checked? (不超过9个单词)

75. What is the greatest challenge to a detector according to the passage? (不超过6个单词)

第四部分书面表达(共两节,满分35分)

阅读短文,根据所读内容在表格的空白处填上适当的单词或短语,每空不超过3个单词。

Millions of people visit Yosemite National Park every year to see the tall waterfalls and

mountains. These mountains are a splendid sight when viewed from the valley floor. Lots of stores, hotels, and restaurants are needed to handle the crowds. Also, water, roads, and other service systems are part of the infrastructure (基础设施) that must be maintained.

Unfortunately, these systems are starting to break down. It's not just in Yosemite but in national parks around the nation.

Yosemite is thirty years old according to Dennis Galvin。a National Park Service worker. The Park is not only old but worn out. Two or three times as many visitors come every year. That is too many visitors for the park to deal with.

Four years ago a storm washed out a water pipeline in the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service had to send water trucks to provide water for the visitors. Last month pipes almost broke again and roads had to be closed for a while.

Why hasn't the National Park Service kept up the park repairs? There is a lack of money. The United States has 378 monuments, parks, and wilderness areas. Between three and four billion dollars are needed for repairs.

Yosemite is one national park that does have money for repairs. It has two hundred million dollars but cannot spend it any way it chooses. When the park workers started widening the road, they were forced to stop by the Sierra Club. The club claimed that the road work was damaging the Merced River that runs through the park.

A sierra Club lawyer, Julia Olson, feels that the infrastructure needs to be moved out of Yosemite. That way less pressure will be put on the already crowded park.

Lately, the rate of newly-founded Confucius Institutes worldwide has brought a pleasant surprise, which fully indicates popularizing Mandrin is unavoidable. In the past two years, over 100 new Institutes have been set up, covering more than 50 countries and districts. It is estimated that the number will reach up to 500 by 2010.

Personally, it is a great honor for us Chinese to have such a tide. The main reason lies in our rapid growth in economy and all-around national power. Secondly, it results from the fact that more and more Chinese are developing overseas and they take our splendid culture with them. It is also one of the major measures for China to transform from a big nation to a power. As we know, if a country intends to be a super power, the globalization of its official language comes first.

Although she is my teacher, Ms. Runkle and I are more like friends. She often invites my classmates and me to take part in different activities outside of school. For example, I went to listen to a journalist's speech, which helped me better understand current events (时事). Not only does Ms. Runkle talk with me outside of school, she is also a great teacher in the classroom. English Language and Composition is a really hard subject for a second language learner. We felt worried in the beginning, but Ms. Runkle really makes an effort to help us out. In class, Ms. Runkle always encourages students to question everything to keep us active. One part of class I love the most is when groups of students are required to give speeches on events that are happening in the world. It requires a lot of deep thinking and I really learn quite a lot from it. I love Ms. Runkle very much. She not only helps me to get good scores, but also acts as a good friend and always gives me advice on life. 1. After class, the author _____. A. seldom sees Ms. Runkle B. talks with Ms. Runkle quite a lot C. enjoys introducing Ms. Runkle to her friends D. often invites Ms. Runkle to different activities 2. We can infer from the text that Ms. Runkle is _____. A. friendly and helpful B. kind and humorous C. clever and active D. strict and boring

I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them. I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing th in little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot cocoa.” They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking. The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!” I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful. Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too. I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room.

A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.
