OVERDENSITYOFI′-DROPOUTGALAXIESINTHESUBARUDEEPFIELD:ACANDIDATEPROTOCLUSTERATZ≃61,2

APERandMAG2Otaetal.jectsdetecteddowntoz′≤26.5,weselected158i′-dropoutsbyusingthecriteria:B>28.45,V>27.74,i′−z′>1.45.Nulldetections(<3σ)inBandVwererequiredsincethefluxofaLBGbluewardofLyαshouldbeabsorbedbytheintergalacticmedium.Ouri′−z′>1.45criterionpicksupgalaxieshavingLymanbreaksatz≃5–7.1,basedoncalculationsusingpopu-lationsynthesismodels(Bruzual&Charlot2003;Madau1995).ThismodelcalculationalsoshowsthattherecouldbeweakremainigfluxesnotcompletelyabsorbedbytheintergalacticmediumintheR-bandwavelengthofz∼6galaxies’spectra.Hence,wedidnotrequireanulldetec-tioninR.Allthei′magnitudesfainterthan28.62(1σlimits)werereplacedbythisvalueinapplicationoftheselectioncriteria.

2.2.ContaminationfromInterlopersTheprobleminselectingz∼6galaxieswithoutnear-infraredimagesiscontamination.Threedifferenttypesofinterloperscouldsatisfyi′−z′>1.45;dwarfstarswithspectraltypelaterthanM7(Hawleyetal.2002),z∼1–2oldellipticalgalaxiescalledExtremelyRedObjects(EROs)with4000˚ABalmerbreakinz′-bandandz∼6quasarswithLyαabsorption.Weevalu-atedfractionsoftheseinterlopersinoursampleusingthesamemethodasOtaetal.(2005):usingastarcountmodel(Nakajimaetal.2000),oldellipticalEROsam-plesactuallyobservedinSubaru/XMM-NewtonDeepSur-vey(Miyazakietal.2003)andHubbleUltraDeepField(UDF)(Yanetal.2004),andaquasarluminosityfunc-tion(Yan&Windhorst2004).Thecalculatednumbercountsofeachinterloperaswellasz∼6LBGareshowninFigure1.Most(∼91%)ofthei′-dropoutsinSDFarefainterthanz′=25.Thepossiblefractionsofdwarfs,EROsandquasarsinz′>25areonly5.9%,0%and0.12%,respectively.IfweconsidercosmicvarianceofEROnumberdensity(Somervilleetal.2004)andPoissonerrorfor0(Gehrels1986),theupperlimitofEROfractioncouldbe󰀁16%inSDFsurveyareaiftheseEROssatisfyi′−z′>1.45.However,Malhotraetal.(2005)alsocon-firmedthatnoEROshowsi′−z′>1.3color(Seetheir§3andFig.1)basedontheirspectroscopyofi-dropoutsinUDF.Hence,weignoretheEROcontaminationinthesubsequentanalysesanddiscussions.Thelowcontamina-tionrateestimatedhereisconsistentwiththefactthatourfollow-upspectroscopydidnotrevealanycandidatestobeinterlopers(See§4).

3.skydistribution3.1.DiscoveryofALocalSurfaceOverdensityTheskydistributionof158i′-dropoutsinSDFisshowninFigure2.Averyinterestingregioninthesouthshowsasignificantoverdensityofthesei′-dropoutswhichmaybeaprotoclusteratz∼6.Toverifythesignificanceofthiscomparedtootherregionsquantitatively,wemea-suredthedegreeofdensityexcess,σΣ20,theoverdensityofi′-dropoutsinacircleof20Mpccomovingradiusatz=6definedasσ2Σ20≡[󰀊(Σ−¯Σ)2󰀋−¯Σ]/¯Σ2(Peebles1980).Here,Σand¯ΣarethenumberofobjectsinthecircleandthemeanofΣvaluesmeasuredincirclesat2000randomlychosenpositionsinthez′imageofSDF,respectively.WeobtainedσΣ20=0.63with3σsignificancefortheregionof

ourinterest.ThisvalueismuchhigherthanthoseofanyotherplacesinSDF,andcomparabletothatofz∼5.7protoclustersfoundbyOuchietal.(2005).Thisareaalsoshowsthehighestdensitycontrast:σΣ≡(Σ−¯Σ)/¯Σ=3.6with5σexcessmeasuredinacomoving8Mpccircle.Thisvalueiscomparabletothoseforaz∼4.8structurefoundbyShimasakuetal.(2003,2004)andz∼5.7protoclustersbyOuchietal.(2005).Wefound56and22i′-dropoutsin20Mpcand8Mpccircles,respectively.Theoverdenseregioncontainstwoextremelybright(z′=21.88and22.16)i′-dropoutsthatmightbez∼6quasarsordwarfstarsasseeninFigure2.TheycouldbepartofasystemconsistingofLAEsphysicallyassociatedwithoneortwoquasarsatz≃6,althoughthesebrighti′-dropoutsaremoreplausiblydwarfstars.IntheSDF,z∼6galaxycandidateshadbeenalsoselectedbytwodifferenttechniques.Shimasakuetal.(2005)madezBandzRfilterssplittingthez′wavebandat9500˚Aandselectedoutz=5.9±0.3LBGcandidatesinthei′−zRvs.zB−zRcolorplanedowntozR=25.4.Meanwhile,Shioyaetal.(2005)detectedz=5.8–6.5LBGcandidates(NB816-dropouts)usingthei′−z′vs.NB816−z′colordiagramdowntoz′=26.07,whereNB816isanarrowbandfiltercenteredat8150˚AwithFWHMof120˚A.OuroverdensityregionincludesthreesuchzR-detectedob-jectsoutof14i′-dropoutsdowntoz′=26.22(totalmag)assumingitiscomparabletozR=25.4(z′∼zR+0.82onaverage;seeTable2inShimasakuetal.(2005))andtwoNB816-dropoutsoutof14i′-dropoutsdowntoz′=26.07.Theyareregardedasmoreplausiblegalaxycandidatesatz∼6.NotethatsincetheircandidateselectionsadoptnulldetectioninR-band(R<2–3σ),wealsolimitedoursampletoR<2–3σinthecomparison.
