Advanced English Reading is a core compulsory course designed for college students

majoring in English to study in their third academic year. It is a comprehensive course

designed in particular to train students’ English language skills , such as reading

comprehension, grammar, rhetoric and writing . Via reading and analyzing a wide range of

materials, including those involving political, economic, social, language, literature,

education, philosophy and other famous works, this course can expand students’ knowledge,

deepen students' understanding of society and life, nurture students’ ability to analyze and

appreciate classics, think independently improve logical thinking and consolidate students'

English language skills. Each lesson covers a large amount of related exercises, including

vocabulary study, paraphrases, discussion, English-Chinese translation and writing exercises,

aiming to improve students’ English proficiency .

Ⅱ. Course Objectives

1. The aim of this course is to help students’ enlarge vocabulary, develop a better

control and command of the known words.

2. To foster students’ ability in analyzing the structure of an article and help them

develop their ability at factual reading, critical reading and aesthetic reading.

3. To help students master the basic writing skills and apply to their own writings.

Ⅲ. Course Learning Outcomes(CLOs)

1. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

1) Master a vocabulary of 7000-9000 words, can correctly and proficiently use 5000 of the

common phrases and words.

2)Master basic word-formation method, memorize a certain number of synonyms,

antonyms; improve reading skills and reading speed.

3) Grasp the cohesion between sentences and paragraphs, such as reference, ellipsis,

substitution, etc.

4)Accurately grasp the main points, the structure, and rhetorical features of the article,

obtain the basic knowledge of rhetoric .

5) Improve language competence, namely explain difficult points in the article ,

summarize the theme of the article, conduct analysis and give comments in English.

1. Course requirements:

Students are expected to attend all lectures.

Readings will be presented at the end of every lecture

Students are invited to do short presentation to class

Evaluation will be based on mid-term test and final examination

7) Academic honesty 4 integrity in all their academic work. In addition, students should

 never ask for or use hints or material relative to assignments or projects

from any student or alumni who has already taken the class;

 never perform a search on the internet to find information relative to a

graded assignment

8) Definition of plagiarism and its punishments

Plagiarism is against University’s policies of scholarship. Students caught

with such offence will immediately be reported to the relevant authorities and will be

severely punished accordingly, which may include expulsion from the University.
