船东是指《船舶所有权证书》的合法持有人，也即是合法拥有船舶主权的人，有时也可以是一个公民、一个法人，一个公司或者是一个集团公司。

有时在业界取得船舶光租权的合法企业也被公认认为是船东。

船东拥有船舶一般大都是将船舶用于航运，对于航运公司分类方式，一般分为特大型，大型，中型，小型航运企业。

分类的的依据是：公司总资产、自有或控制船舶的总吨位，具体定义标准可以根据市场、时间进行相关调整。

特大型航运企业，定义为公司总资产大于200亿，自有船舶总吨位大于1000万吨，我国典型的航运公司为：中远、中海、招商轮船。

大型航运企业业，定义为总资产介于100－50亿，自有船舶总吨位介于600－1000万吨之间，国内的典型代表公司为：长航集团（长航凤凰股份有限公司与南京水运实业股份有限公司的母公司）。

中型航运企业，定义为总资产介于5－50亿，自有船舶总吨位介于60万吨－600万吨。

我国典型的航运公司：上海时代航运有限公司、浙江省海运集团、河北运洋运输股分有限公司、福建冠海海运有限公司、南京水运实业股份有限公司、长航凤凰股份有限公司、大连海昌油运有限公司。

小型航运企业，定义为总资产小于10亿，自有船舶总吨位小于60万吨。

国内典型代表公司：宁波海运股份有限公司、上海泛亚航运有限公司珠海新世纪航运有限公司、上海友好航运有限公上海浦海航运有限公司。

另外，船东的分类还可以船舶的类型来分类，有散货船、油轮、滚装船、甲板驳船、趸船、拖轮、工程船、挖泥船、钻井平台、军舰、邮轮、游艇、渔船、钓鱼船的船东等等多种类型。

随着海洋石油的勘探开发，普通概念上用于拖带的船舶已经不再满足要求。

一种叫做“平台供应船”（Platform Supply Vessel，简称PSV）的多功能海上交通工具首先出现。

PSV的船体长度从65英尺到350英尺不等，发挥的作用也是多方面的，但是更主要的任务还是在海上平台之间运送人员和物资。

与之相比，“操锚供应拖轮”（Anchor Handling Tug Supply，简称AHTS）不仅能定位和安装海上石油钻井设备，而且，在特定情况下还能用做紧急救援船。
