典故是文苑中的奇葩 。古往今来 ,文人墨客无不垂青于应用 典故 ,因为典故多为形象生动的故事浓缩而成或是绝词佳句提炼 而成 ,含蓄而隽永 ,冼炼而深刻 ,文人吟诗赋词对句 ,必会考虑用 典 ,文学大家曹雪芹也不例外 ,其作品《红楼梦》用典无数 ,仅其中 的联额 、对句就应用了很多典故 。

在翻译典故时 ,译者们一般采取三种方法 :省典 、化典 、注典 。 《红楼梦》的两个全译本 ———杨译本和霍译本在翻译《红》的过程 中 ,也采用了这三种方法 。
一 省典( omission)
翻译界对于典故的翻译 ,基本上达成一个共识 :在不影响理解 的前提下 ,一切从简 ,可以省略的就省略 。所谓省典就是只将原文 字面意思译出 ,而不深究其内涵 。在翻译《红楼梦》对联时 ,二译也 这样处理了其中的一些对联 。

“九重焦”从字面上看 ,似乎是“忧虑重重”的意思 ,其实不然 。 “九重”指皇帝 。宋玉《九辩》中说“君之门以九重”。两译都用“皇 帝”(sovereign 和 king) 来译“九重”。
