AbstractBorn-Infeldtheoryadmitsfiniteenergypointparticlesolutionswithδ-functionsources,BIons.IdiscusstheirroleinthetheoryofDirichletp-branesastheendsofstringsintersectingthebranewhentheeffectsofgravityareignored.Therearealsotopologicallynon-trivialelectricallyneutralcatenoidalsolutionslookingliketwop-branesjoinedbyathroat.Thegeneralsolutionisanon-singulardeformationofthecatenoidifthechargeisnottoolargeandasingulardeformationoftheBIonsolutionforchargesabovethatlimit.TheintermediatesolutionisBPSandCoulomb-like.Performingadualityrotationweobtainmonopolesolutions,theBPSlimitbeingasolutionoftheabelianBogolmol’nyiequations.Thesitua-tioncloselyresemblesthatofsubandsuperextremeblack-branesolutionsofthesupergravitytheories.IalsoshowthatcertainspecialLagrangiansubmanifoldsofCp,p=3,4,5,mayberegardedassupersymmetriccon-figurationsconsistingofp-branesatanglesjoinedbythroatswhicharethesourcesofglobalmonopoles.Vortexsolutionsarealsoexhibited.

1IntroductionRecentlyanumberofoutstandingproblemsinphysicshavebeen,andarecur-rentlybeing,solvedusingtechniquesinvolvingDirichletp-branes(see[1]forabriefreviewandreferences).Itisthereforedesirabletounderstandasmuchasonecanoftheirbasicproperties.Inparticularoneisinterestedinthehowstringyandspacetimeconceptsarerelated.Attheclassicallevelp-braneshavebeenextensivelystudiedassolutionsofthevarioussuper-gravitylimitsofstring/M-theory.InthispaperIwanttoexploreadifferentlimitinwhichtheeffectsofgravityareignoredbutinwhichonestillhasnon-trivialandhope-fullyphysicallyrelevantclassicalsolutions.Weshalldiscoverthatthereisarich

1setofsolutionswhosepropertiesresembleinastrikingwaysomeofthoseofthetheblackp-branesolutionsofsupergravitytheory.Classicallytheequationsofmotionareessentiallyageneralizationoftheminimalsurfaceequationswiththeaddedfeaturethatthereisanabelian,i.e.U(1),gaugefieldpropagatingontheworldvolume.Inwhatfollowsweshallconsiderthecaseofveryweakstringcouplinginwhichcaseonemayignorethefieldshavingthep-braneastheirsource.ThustheD-p-branemovesinflatMinkowskispacetimewithconstantdilatonandvanishingKalb-Ramond3-form.Itisconsistenttosetthisgaugefieldtozeroandindeedwethengetthestandardminimalsubmanifoldequations,ofwhichthesimplestsolutionisaflatp+1-plane.ItisphysicallyclearthatthisistheonlystaticregularsolutiondefinedasasinglevaluedgraphoverRpwhichbecomesplanaratlargespatialdistances.Thisisthecontentofthevariouseevenstronger‘Bernstein’typetheoremsinthemathematicalliteratureonminimalsubmanifolds[28,38].Infactitisnotoriousthatthesestrongtheoremsonlyholdstrictlyifp<7whichnodoubtwillultimatelyturnouttohaveastringy/M-theoreticexplanation.Thisdoesnotmeantosaythattherearenonon-trivialregularstaticsolutions.Thereare.Ofparticularinterestaretopologicallynon-trivialgeneralizedcatenoidsconsistingoftwoparallelasymptoticallyflatsheetsjoinedbyathroat.Perhapssurprizinglytheplanarsolutionremainsasolutionwhenthegaugefieldno-longervanishes.InthatcasethegaugefieldisgovernedbythepureBorn-Infeldaction[4,5].AgainitisnotdifficulttoconvinceoneselfthattheonlyregularstaticsourcefreesolutionofBorn-Infeldtheorywhichfallsoffatlargedistancesisthetrivialone.AsweshallseetherearealsoBernsteintypetheoremsonmaximalhypersurfacesinMinkowskispacetimewhichprovethisrigorously[39,37].HoweveritiswellknownthatBorn-Infeldtheoryadmitsfiniteenergystaticsolutionswhichwereoriginallyproposedasclassicalmodelsfortheelectron.Thesesolutionsarenoteverywheresourcefreelikesolitonsolutionsbutratherresemblewhataresometimescalled‘elementary’solutionswithpointlikesourceslikethefundamentalstringsolution[11,12].Perhapsonemightcallthem‘BIons’.TheessentialpointofBorn’stheoryisthatonedistinguishesbetweentheelectricfieldEwhichiscurlfreeandhenceonemayset
