Bring classics into our modern life
The heated discussion on what attitudes we should take towards
classics has never stopped. On the one hand, we are aware of the great
value the classics contain. While, on the other hand, dramatic changes
have taken place, and we are developing rapidly, making our life very
different from the past.
So what should we do? From my point of view, it is an extreme to either
abandon all the classics and act at will or simply follow the directions
that the predecessors have left us. To reach a compromise, we need to
abstract the positive and good points from those classics and bring them
into our modern life.
First, let's take Confucianism as an example. We still have those old
sayings of Confucius in our textbooks, and spend time studying them
intensively. Teachers even encourage you to read and recite those articles,
from which they think you can get a lot. The 2600-year-old classic contains
vast wisdom. They may not perfectly fit today's world, but may guide us
in some aspects. It will be rewarding if we can draw the good points from
the classics, with the guidance of which will bring us huge benefits.
In order to think critically, we need to develop critical thinking
and therefore decide which the valuable part of classics is and which is
not. To reach this level, we'll have to read as many books as possible.
Thus, neglecting the importance of classics is the last thing we will do.
Besides, inheriting is also our duty. Thoughts, traditions and even
values are recorded in classics, and reading and spreading them are part
of our responsibilities. We also create classics for our posterity.
Balancing between creating and inheriting is the main problem we all need
to deal with.
In a nutshell, classics play a vital role in our life. We should
endeavor to inherit the spiritual wealth, bring them into our modern life
and make good use of them.
