Selector GuideGeneral Description
The MAX3440E–MAX3444E fault-protected RS-485 andJ1708 transceivers feature ±60V protection from signalfaults on communication bus lines. Each device containsone differential line driver with three-state output and onedifferential line receiver with three-state input. The 1/4-unit-load receiver input impedance allows up to 128 trans-ceivers on a single bus. The devices operate from a 5Vsupply at data rates of up to 10Mbps. True fail-safe inputsguarantee a logic-high receiver output when the receiverinputs are open, shorted, or connected to an idle data line.
Hot-swap circuitry eliminates false transitions on thedata bus during circuit initialization or connection to alive backplane. Short-circuit current-limiting and ther-mal shutdown circuitry protect the driver against exces-sive power dissipation, and on-chip ±15kV ESDprotection eliminates costly external protection devices.
General DescriptionThe MAX3209E is a complete, dual DTE RS-232 serialport (6 transmitters, 10 receivers) for motherboards anddesktop PCs that ensures compliance with the stringentESD requirements of the European Community. Thedevice minimizes board space and power consumptionby eliminating the need for a negative power supply; itintegrates two serial ports and a charge pump into a sin-gle 38-pin TSSOP package.The MAX3209E features a 50µA low-power standbymode for compliance with system power-managementrequirements. During standby, while the device oper-ates from the single +3V to +5.5V logic supply, onereceiver on each port remains active, allowing automaticsystem wake-up when peripheral communicationsresume.All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs are protectedto ±15kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, ±8kVusing IEC 1000-4-2 Contact Discharge, and ±15kVusing the Human Body Model, making the device idealfor use in harsh environments or mission-critical equip-ment. As a result of its robust charge-pump structure,the MAX3209E guarantees mouse driveability and trueRS-232 operation at data rates up to 460kbps, ensuringcompatibility with PC-to-PC communication software(such as LapLink™).
General Description
The MAX3230E/AE and MAX3231E/AE are +2.5V to+5.5V powered EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communica-tions interfaces with low power requirements, high data-rate capabilities, and enhanced electrostatic discharge(ESD) protection, in a chip-scale package (UCSP™)and WLP package. All transmitter outputs and receiverinputs are protected to ±15kV using IEC 1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, ±8kV using IEC 1000-4-2 ContactDischarge, and ±15kV using the Human Body Model.
The MAX3230E/AE and MAX3231E/AE achieve a 1µAsupply current with Maxim’s AutoShutdown™ feature.They save power without changing the existing BIOS oroperating systems by entering low-power shutdownmode when the RS-232 cable is disconnected, or whenthe transmitters of the connected peripherals are off.
The transceivers have a proprietary low-dropout trans-mitter output stage, delivering RS-232-compliant perfor-mance from a +3.1V to +5.5V supply, and RS-232-compatible performance with a supply voltage as lowas +2.5V. The dual charge pump requires only four,small 0.1µF capacitors for operation from a +3.0V sup-ply. Each device is guaranteed to run at data rates of250kbps while maintaining RS-232 output levels.

The MAX202E–MAX213E, MAX232E/MAX241E linedrivers/receivers are designed for RS-232 and V.28communications in harsh environments. Each transmitteroutput and receiver input is protected against ±15kVelectrostatic discharge (ESD) shocks, without latchup.The various combinations of features are outlined in theSelector Guide.The drivers and receivers for all tendevices meet all EIA/TIA-232E and CCITT V.28specifications at data rates up to 120kbps, when loadedin accordance with the EIA/TIA-232E specification.
The MAX211E/MAX213E/MAX241E are available in 28-pin SO packages, as well as a 28-pin SSOP that uses60% less board space. The MAX202E/MAX232E comein 16-pin TSSOP, narrow SO, wide SO, and DIPpackages. The MAX203E comes in a 20-pin DIP/SOpackage, and needs no external charge-pumpcapacitors. The MAX205E comes in a 24-pin wide DIPpackage, and also eliminates external charge-pumpcapacitors. The MAX206E/MAX207E/MAX208E come in24-pin SO, SSOP, and narrow DIP packages. TheMAX232E/MAX241E operate with four 1µF capacitors,while the MAX202E/MAX206E/MAX207E/MAX208E/MAX211E/MAX213E operate with four 0.1µF capacitors,further reducing cost and board space.
