The Scarlet Letter

After I finished the novel "The Scarlet Letter", I was deeply impressed by

the three main characters, who had different features in their own .Now ,I will

put my focus on on the different characteristics of the three persons in the

following passenges.

First of all ,I'd like to give the priority for the heroine Hester,a woman

wearing the scarlet letter A. Hester ,the one breaking the bondge of the

traditional moral to pursue the true love ,was accused of adultery ,which

brought her great shame because her behavior obeyed the current

moral ,religion and traditional rules in that Puritan society where the church

was strong and unforgiving ,everyone broke the laws of the church and God

must be punished .She must have to wear the scarlet letter A in her bosom all

the time. Contempt ,shame followed in her footsteps day and

night. However ,Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. In order to

begin a new life ,she had been alone with her child for a long time, with little

communication. She was always generous to help others with out any

purpose. As we all know, when a woman had lived through a hard experience,

her character changed a great deal. If she was timid, tender and complained,

she would die sooner or later. If she was brave enough, tolerant enough and

quite positive, quite persistent ,she would survive .Finally, Hester’s charitable

deeds and humility had earned her a reputation and forgiveness from the

scorn of the community. The people in the town no longer viewed the letter as

a punishment .Instead ,they considered it just a warning .Furthermore ,many

people asked for advice ,conformed to her words so as to gain the comforts in

their tough time.

Secondly, I would give my comments on the poor minister Arthur

Dimmesdale,a complex man. As a minister,he fell in love with Hester ,which in

fact had betrayed his moral. What's worse, he was too weak and timid to admit

his crime. In order to hold the high position and respect ,he became a secret sin.He decieved everyone and continued to take on his work, which in fact had

betrayed God and obeyed the moral. In this case, he blamed himself and felt

ashamed, suffering from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by

psychological distress. To release his pain in both physical and mental health,

he confessed his crime to the public, using his last breath to show people the

scarlet letter in his chest. Although he avoided being punished together with

Hester, he was under the pressure and the blame from his consciousness,

which was more cruel than being punished in public.

Thridly, I want to give my opinion on the evil man Roger Chillingworth, who

transformed himself victim to the sin because his mariage itself was a crime. In

order to revenge, he tried all means to harm others' soul and emotion. He

looked gentle and soft ,but ,as a matter of fact ,he was just like a devil to ruin

others' life .He was a jealous ,evil and sinful man. After Mr. Dimmesdale’s

death , Roger Chilling worth lost all his strength and energy and died quickly.

When the evil old man no longer had his goal to revenge , the devil takes him

back to the hell .It was really satirical.

In a word ,I really admired Hester's bravery and I'd like to show my

sympathy for the poor minister. As for the cruel man ,I can only show my pity for

him.
