AbstractWestudycharmparticleproductioninhadron-hadroncollisions.Aftercal-culatingperturbativelythecharmquarkdifferentialcrosssection,westudythehadronizationmechanisms.ItisshownthatrecombinationisthekeytounderstandthesocalledLeadingParticleEffectincharmmesonproduction.Forcharmbaryonproduction,however,leadingparticleeffectsareduetoacombinationofcontributionscomingfromboth,therecombinationandthefragmentationmechanisms.Wecompareourcalculationstoexperimentaldataoncharmhadronproductioninπ−NandpNinteractionsfromseveralexper-imentsandshowthataconsistentdescriptionofthemcanbereachedwithouttheaidofothermechanismthanrecombinationandfragmentation.1IntroductionHeavyquarkproductioninhadroniccollisionsisoneofthemostinterestingtestinggroundsofQuantumChromodinamics.Thefusionreactionsgg→Q¯Qandq¯q→Q¯Qareexpectedtobedominantinheavyquark,Q,productionand,asamatteroffactexperimentaldataseemstoreasonablyagreewithperturbativeQCD(pQCD)calculationswhichtodayareavailableuptoNexttoLeadingOrder(NLO)[1].Onceaheavyquarkisproduced,ithastohadronizetoproducetheobserved,hadronic,finalstate.Onthisrespect,itwasexpectedthatthefactorizationthe-orembevalidandhadronizationproceededthroughthefragmentationmechanism.Thus,heavyhadronproductioncanbeseparatedintotheperturbativelycalculablehardscatteringandgluondynamicsfromthenon-perturbativeboundstatedynamicscontainedintheprocessindependenthadronstructure,expresedthroughthecorre-spondingpartondistributionfunctions(PDF),q(x,Q2)andg(x,Q2),andthejetfrag-mentationfunctions,Dh/Q(z,Q2)1.Literallyspeaking,thefactorizationassumptionpredictsstrictindependenceoftheheavyquarkhadronizationfromtheproductionprocess.Thus,noflavorcorrelationshouldexistbetweeninitialandfinalstates.However,thereexistcopiuosexperimentalinformationoncharmhadronproduc-tionwhichcontradictstheabovehypothesis[2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9].Infact,therewasobservedanexcessinthecharmhadronproductionatlargevaluesofxF(∼2pl/√
