1 College Stress In pressurized modem lives, the fast-paced environment and fierce competition have bought with tremendous stress to people in all kinds of fields; graduate students are of no exception. Academic, financial and personal problems are the three main factors that can attribute to the issue that most of the graduates are suffered with heavy stress. Academic problem is the undoubtedly the most common source of stress among the students. First, grades are the top priorities on the list of academic problem that make one feel stressful. Because evaluating the academic level of students and giving rewards such as scholarship and honorary credential all depend on it, students have to work hard and compete with each other. Second, submission of manuscript and the publication of academic paper are also big challenges for postgraduates. Officially, a certain number of papers is required as prerequisite for accessing to a smooth graduation. However, publishing an academic paper successfully could be a consuming process that takes time, energy, materiel and money so that quiet a few students are overwhelmed by the pressure during the period. Third, thesis defense is the last crucial task for postgraduates. The standard of accomplishing an essay is much higher then that in undergraduate study. Making forth new ideas and create new concept is of vital importance and a necessity for postgraduates. They might be worry about how to display the ideas and presentation clearly and how to respond the difficult questions 2

present by the teachers of the committee. In addition to academic stress, the student often feels financial pressure in tuition, study investment and „red bomb‟. To begin with, the tuition is quiet higher in postgraduate study then ever before. Therefore how to earn money is putting on the agenda for some people. Some students have to apply for loan or work part-time to earn their tuition fee while others can take the time to study or have fun. The tight schedule might bring about pressure to the students. What‟s more, in order to prepare for the life and career in the future, we have to make some study investment such as getting driving license, taking the TOEFL in case you intend to study aboard or preparing for public servant examination. And all of these activities require money. Therefore it presses the student to drift their expenses. With such full plans on the “to do” list, it is stressful when one have to worry about the financial balance and observe the input-output ratio at the same time. Last but not least, the „red-bomb‟ is heavy financial burden for postgraduate students. With some of their college classmates and childhood friends getting married, they have to attend wedding ceremonies from time to time. It is a tradition that we present the newly couple „red packet‟ before their wedding. Compare to the friends who have already have jobs, students in school do not have so much money for them to use freely. Over time, any news of wedding make the poor students feel anxious. Along with academic and financial worries, the student faces personal 3

problem such as being accepted or not, finding an idea occupation and marriage. The problems of being accepted and approved haunts quiet a few people. Unlike the undergraduates, postgraduates study in a smaller group which is their supervisor‟s laboratory. In each laboratory have approximately ten students who work and study together to support their supervisor‟s research. Some of them carried great weight and others not. The students who are often ignored by the teacher and other companions appears to be more anxiety and stressful. Next, finding idea occupation also make one feel pressure. Many postgraduates prefer to do job that is both high paid and light. And these requirements keep them searching. It is the common consensus that the process of applying for high competitive position, worried about fail to achieve the goal set by one or families and the hard and long preparation period make students feel stressful. Finally, marriage and settlement are problems confronting postgraduates. A lot of them even do not have date by now and that makes them and their families feel worried. The pressure not only comes form themselves but also from their parents. In conclusion, facing academic, financial and personal problems, postgraduate students live and study under great pressure. It is obvious that life is stressful for these young people in college. 周婷婷 2012-3-19
