For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A),B),C )and D). For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage. How Do You See Diversity As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company. During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,〞so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,〞Tif fany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was Opt the candidate’s “different〞behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开)your eyes.“I wasjust thrown off by the lack of eye contact; not realizing it was cultural,〞Tiffany says. “I missed out, but will not miss that opportunity again.〞Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions.Hire Advantage At a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can eliminate invalid biases(成见) from the process have a distinctadvantage. My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots. A real estate recruiter we worked with illustrates the positive difference such train ing can make.“During my Mindsets coaching session, I was taught how to recruit a diversified workforce. I recruited people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to utilize their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate teethes began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to say in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.〞‘Blinded by Gender Dale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops on supervising a diverseworkforce. “Through one of the sessions, I discovered my personal bias,〞he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole person, and being open to differences.〞In his case, the blindness was not a bout culture but rather gender.“Ihad a management position open in toy department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. lied I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My reasoning would have been that even though both candidates were greatand could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to he home with her children and not travel.〞Dale’s assump tions are another example of the well-Intentioned but incorrect thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce.“I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation. I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allots them to make an informed decision.〞Dale credits the workshop, “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.〞Year of the Know-It-All Doug is another supervisor who attended one of my workshops. Fie recalls a major lesson learned from his own employee.“One of my most embarrassing moments was when I had a Chinese-American employee put in a request to take time off to celebrate Chinese New Year. I n my ignorance, I assumed he had his dates wrong’, as the firstof January had just passed. When I advised him of this, I gave him a tong talking-to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.“He patiently waited, then when I was done, he said he would like Chinese New Year off, not the Western New Year.He explained politely that in his culture the new year did not begin January first, and that Chinese New Year, which is tied to the lunar cycle, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the Chinese calendar. Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mixed up. But I learned a great deal about assumptions, and that the timing of holidays varies considerably from culture to culture.“Attending the diversity workshop helped me realize how much I could learn by simply asking questions and creating dialogues with toy employees, rather than making assumptions and trying to be a know-it-all,〞Doug admits. “The biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be mor e ‘inclusive’ to differences.〞A Better Bottom Line An open mind about diversity not only improves organizations internally, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. “Most of my customers speak English asa second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to un derstand how important inclusiveness was to customer service. As a result, Oct customer base has increased.〞Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities. It is about building better communities and organizations that enhance us as individuals and reinforce our shared humanity. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from Oct past, from the media, peers, family, friends, etc., toebegin to realize that some of our conclusions are flawed(出缺陷的) or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to van) ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.注意:此局部试题请在答题卡1上作答。

He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出⼝) to other countries like America and West Germany. Bananas are t he country’s second most important export.Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (单独的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. The other three months of the year are harvest time and the children have to help their parents to pick coffee beans.1. This passage is mainly about ______.A. Christopher ColumbusB. Costa RicaC. some products from Costa RicaD. the education of Costa RicaBChristian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精炼⽶). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维⽣素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.6 . The underlined word “cure” in Paragragh 1 probably means ______.A. a medical treatmentB. a kind of vitaminC. a kind of germD. a kind of rice7. Christian Eijkman went to the island of Java to ______.A. spend his holidayB. find ways to grow better cropsC. do some research about the islandD. help the Javanese with their illness8. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while —then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!11. The writer of this passage must be ______.A. an AmericanB. a ChineseC. a professorD. a student12. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.13. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant14. The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time15. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “______”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans’ hospitalityD. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendshipsDThe other day I heard a few local musicians talking:“I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.”“I’m never playing in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.”But, one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs t hat book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking to book a few summer festivals this year.”I’ve heard that you are the average of the five people whom you spend the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.Attitudes are important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者), chances are you will start to as well. So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t become friends with people who fall below that standard.Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you on your career path.16. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?A. A friend in need is a friend indeedB. How to make friendship last for everC. You are who your friends areD. Friends are the most important in one’s success17. The underlined sentence “they’re rubbing off on you” in Paragraph 6 means ______.A. they’ll push you aheadB. they’ll inf luence youC. they’ll cover your shortcomingsD. they’ll help you achieve your goal18. The musicians’ words at the beginning are written mainly to show ______.A. the musicians’ living conditions are quite poorB. people have poor taste in musicC. people have different attitudes towards the same thingD. young people have greater chances of succeeding19. By taking the exercise mentioned in Paragraph 7, you can ______.A. improve a lot in making more friendsB. come to the right way of making friendsC. develop a better relationship with your friendsD. arrange the time with your friends properly20. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. No current merit-aid recipients will lose their scholarships, but need-based aid alone will be awarded beginning with students entering in fall 2008.Not all colleges offer merit aid; generally, the more selective a school, the less likely it is to do so. Harvard and Princeton, for example, offer generous need-based packages, but many families who don’t meet need eligibility(资格)have been willingto pay whatever they must for a big-name school. For small regional colleges that struggle just to fill seats, merit aid can be an important revenue-builder because many recipients still pay enough tuition dollars over and above the scholarship amount to keep the institution running. But for rankings-conscious schools in between, merit aid has served primarily as a tool to recruit top students and to improve their academic profits. “They’re trying to buy students,” says Skidmore College economist Sandy Baum.Studies show merit aid also tends to benefit disproportionately students who could afford to enroll without it.“As we look to the future, we see a more pressing need to invest in need-based aid,”says Monica Inzer, dean of admission and financial aid at Hamilton, which has offered merit scholarships for 10 years. During that time, it rose in US News & World Report’s ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, from 25 to 17.Merit aid, which benefited about 75 students a year, or about 4% of its student body, at a cost of about $ 1 million a year, “served us well,”Inzer says, but “to be discounting the price for families that don’t need financial aid doesn’t feel right any more.”Need-based aid remains by far the largest share of all student aid, which includes state, federal and institutional grants. But merit aid, offered primarily by schools and states, is growing faster, both overall and at the institutional level.Between 1995-96 and 2003-04, institutional merit aid alone increased 212%, compared with 47% for need-based grants. At least 15 states also offer merit aid, typically in a bid to enroll top students in the state’s public institutions. But in recent years, a growing chorus(异口同声)of critics has begun pressuring schools to drop the practice. Recent decisions by Hamilton and others may be “a sign that people are starting to realize that there’s this destructive competition going on,”says Baum, co-author of a recent College Report that raises concerns about the role of institutional aid not based on need.David Laird, president of the Minnesota Private College Council, says many of his schools would like to reduce their merit aid but fear that in doing so, they would lose top students to their competitors.“No one can take one-sided action,”says Laird, who is exploring whether to seek an exemption(豁免)from federal anti-trust laws so member colleges can discuss how they could jointly reduce merit aid, “This is a merry-go-round that’s going very fast, and none of the institutions believe they can sustain the risks of trying to breakaway by themselves.”A complicating factor is that merit aid has become so popular with middle-income families, who don’t qualify for need-based aid, that many have come to depend on it. And, as tuitions continue to increase, the line between merit and need blurs. That’s one reason Allegheny College doesn’t plan to drop merit aid entirely.“We still believe in rewarding superior achievements and know that these top students truly value the scholarship,”says Scott Friedhoff, Allegheny’s vice president for enrollment.Emory University in Atlanta, which boasts a $4.7 billion endowment(捐赠), meanwhile, is taking another approach. This year, it announced it would eliminate loans for needy students and cap them for middle-income families. At the same time, it would expand its 28-year-old merit program.“Y eah, we’re playing the merit game,”acknowledges Tom Lancaster, associate dean for undergraduate education. But it has its strong point, too, he says. “The fact of the matter is, it’s not just about the lowest-income people. It’s the average American middle-class family who’s being priced out of the market.”*A few words about merit-based aid:Merit-based aid is aid offered to students who achieve excellence in a given area, and is generally known as academic, athletic and artistic merit scholarships.Academic merit scholarships are based on students’grades, GPA and overall academic performance during high school. They are typically meant for students going straight to college right after high school. However, there are scholarships for current college students with exceptional grades as well. These merit scholarships usually help students pay tuition bills, and they can be renewed each year as long as the recipients continue to qualify. In some cases, students may need to be recommended by their school or a teacher as part of the qualification process.Athletic merit scholarships are meant for students that excel(突出)in sports of any kind, from football to track and field events. Recommendation for these scholarships is required, since exceptional athletic performance has to be recognized by a coach or a referee(裁判). Applicants need to send in a tape containing their best performance.Artistic merit scholarships require that applicants excel in a given artistic area. This generally includes any creative field such as art, design, fashion, music, dance or writing. Applying for artistic merit scholarships usually requires that students submit aportfolio(选辑)of some sort, whether that includes a collection of artwork, a recording of a musical performance or a video of them dancing.1. 命题人:大学外语教学部 复核人: 第 2 页 共 11 页 2009级《大学英语》分级考试试卷 Part I. Reading Comprehension (40%) Directions: Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the questions or incomplete statements following the passage. You must read the four choices marked A, B, C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. (2’×20)
Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home. So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home. In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television. School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers (日托站) has almost doubled in recent years. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small.
1 The main idea of this article is that _______. A. the American family is dying B. young people today don’t want to get married C. the American family is changing, but it is stronger than ever D. education has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family
2 Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Marriage is more popular than before. B. Many divorced people remarry. C. The majority of marriages last long. D. Working mothers devote less time to their children. 第 3 页 共 11 页
3 The author of this article believes that ________. A. the American family is here to stay B. children should not watch so much television C. mothers should not work when their children are small D. teenage marriages should be encouraged
4 What is the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century? A. The daycare center. B. Television. C. The school. D. Development time.
5 According to the writer, which two major factors have led to the belief that the American family is dying? A. The divorce rate is high and working mothers neglect their children. B. The divorce rate is high and children care more about television than anything else. C. Divorces are increasing and many teenage marriages break up. D. Children stay in school longer and mothers have little time to take care of them.
Passage 2 Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. What you give your relatives, friends, husband, or wife can help you know yourself better. Also, what they give you can tell you something about their personality. Most gift-giving (and getting) shows nothing more than the spirit of love and friendship. But it is possible to form some associations between the kinds of things bought and the people who buy them. Here is a guide to who gives you what --- and why. The clothes you wear tell something about your personality. They tell the world not only how you want to be seen but how you see yourself as well. When someone gives you something to wear that agrees with your self-image, they’re saying, “I agree with you. I like you the way you are.” Such a gift should be taken as a form of compliment. On the other hand, a gift of clothing that does not match your personality could be an insult to your character. Making something by hand has become the exception in many countries today-so much so that giving a homemade gift is sometimes considered unusual. If you receive a homemade gift, you’re lucky. It may not be made perfectly, but it will show a certain quality of love. People who give homemade gifts may be said to be very generous. They are given time and emotion, two important characteristics of being creative. A person who thinks of food when thinking of a gift is good example of what human warmth means. Whether you give a box of chocolates, a bag of oranges, or a ball of cheese, all carry the same message of comfort and support. People who give books as gifts either like reading or would like everyone to think they do. If you happen to receive a large, heavy book, this giver may be much more interested in the way things appear than in the way they actually are. Of course, reading is a way of feeling the emotions of another person and of learning new things. Giving a book can be a way of sharing a feeling or a newly learned meaning. The giver is probably trying to say to you what the book said to him.
