S-5-U Clamp What profiles will the S-5-U fit? The S-5-U clamp will fit most standing seam profiles on the market today, including both "architectural" and "structural" types. When in doubt about a particular seam or profile, check the dimensioning of the seam and compare with the critical dimensions shown at right.

The S-5-U measures 1.5" x 1.5" x 2.0" The bolt measures 3/8"-16 x .709" (flat washer also furnished) There are a few profiles which are "marginal." One example is Copper Sales UC-4 (at left). The clamp will fit over this profile, but must be slipped on from the end and then carefully moved to its desired location. Another example is Berridge "Cee Lock." The S-5-U will fit this profile, but it may have to be forced down until it snaps over the seam profiling (far left).

A few profiles may require some minor modification to the seam prior to clamp installation. The Fabral "Snap Rib" is an example. To use on this profile, the cap must be field notched. This procedure is described by Fabral in their S-5! user information guide booklet. Another profile that may require some modification is the "Armco Steelox" and similar horizontal seams, on which the seamer does not completely close the seam, but only partially so. The dimensioning on these seams is such that the clamp will not slip over the seam (above left). Some hand crimping at the clamp location will resolve this problem. This can be done by hand with a pair of ViceGrip tinners, pliers or hand tongs. This method works well if there are only a few clamps to install. If there are many, a better crimping tool is available from S-5! distributors which makes this crimping much more expedient.

S-5-Z Clamp

What profiles will the S-5-Z fit? The S-5-Z was designed especially for Zip-Rib as manufactured by Merchant & Evans, and BHP in the U.S., and also for Kal-Zip as manufactured by Corus (formerly Hoogovens Aluminium Building Systems) in Europe. We don’t promise that it will fit all similar profiles, but a section of this clamp with critical dimensions is shown at right. In all cases it is slid onto the seam from the end of the panel.

The S-5-Z measures 1.8"w x 1.925"h x 2.0"long. The bolt measures 3/8"-16 x .709" (flat washer also furnished)

Because of the nature of the S-5-Z clamp, you won't be able to slip it on in the middle of a panel seam. To make it easier to push or pull the clamp from either the top or bottom of the roof slope, you can create a "stand up" tool which will allow you to move the clamp while standing.

To make the "stand up" tool (shown above), take a piece of aluminum tubing about 4' long and crimp one end flat. Drill a 3/8" hole through the crimped end and then use the bolt on the S-5-Z clamp to bolt the tube onto the clamp. You can now use the aluminum tubing to push or pull the clamp along the panel seam.

S-5-B Clamp

What profiles will the S-5-B fit? The S-5-B is a brass clamp made especially for copper roofing. It will fit traditional double-folded standing seam copper in 16 oz. and 20 oz. It may also be used on lead coated copper. The S-5-B has a detent within the clamp throat for greater holding strength. The set screws will dimple, but not pierce the panel seam. Photos at left and right show both sides of the double folded seam after clamp removal.

The S-5-B is 1.0" x 1.0" x 1.88" the bolt holes are 7/16"-14 (No hardware furnished with this clamp)

The S-5-B will also fit traditional batten seam copper and lead coated copper (16 oz. or 20 oz.), provided the seam has only a single fold. A completed batten seam fold will need to be partially opened as shown below.

This clamp may also be used on stainless steel or Terne Coated Stainless in the profiling mentioned. For metallurgical compatibility reasons, it should not be used on aluminum, zinc or coated carbon steel.

S-5-E Clamp What profiles will the S-5-E fit? The S-5-E is a special clamp designed for traditional double folded standing seam profiles which have always been so popular in Europe. It will fit most site formed profiles of this geometry from Knudson, ESE, and RollFormer machines, Slebach, Draco, and break-formed double folded standing seam profiles. It will also fit Butler MR24 and Genesis 360 panels.

Critical dimensioning is shown: overall clamp dimensions are 1.25" x 1.25" x 2.0"
