一、美国俚语的特点和应用
1、非正式性
Slang(俚语)具有显著的非正式性,即口语化。例如:谈到电视television一词,俚语词汇有goggle-box, the one-eyed monster等;如果电视出了故障,则可以说the goggle-box is on the blink.
随着英语在国际上使用越来越广泛,口语的重要程度越来越大。中国学生多年以来学习正规英语,由于缺乏跨文化的理解,无法把握这种特别灵活的口语语言,无法推断出说话人的意图,导致“社会用语失败”。

A:Wow,you fixed my computer in less than 10 minutes ,you’re good!(哇!你不到10分钟就把我的计算机修好了,你真棒!)

可见,美国俚语是非常口语化的东西,仅仅掌握书面英语或正式英语是不能在语言交流中游刃有余的。
2、短小精悍
从美国俚语构成来看,如:apple-polisher(马屁精),green eyed(嫉妒),dog
sleep(不时惊醒的睡眠)等,都体现了这一特点。
3、表达的丰富性
俚语的使用增加了语言表达的丰富性,使人们能够根据不同的场合,运用各种不同语体色彩的词汇表达同一事物或概念。例如:“小题大做”(make a fuss about
trifles) 这一概念,人们可以使用一句俚语 All right ,don’t make a meal of it。
4、称呼的亲昵化
俚语既然属于非正式的语言,使谈话气氛活跃起来,使交际双方产生一种亲密感。如:buddy, mate ,my boy ,old man 以及old boy/old fellow等。如果一个教
