一、美国俚语的特点和应用
1、非正式性
Slang（俚语）具有显著的非正式性，即口语化。例如：谈到电视television一词，俚语词汇有goggle-box, the one-eyed monster等；如果电视出了故障，则可以说the goggle-box is on the blink.
随着英语在国际上使用越来越广泛，口语的重要程度越来越大。中国学生多年以来学习正规英语，由于缺乏跨文化的理解，无法把握这种特别灵活的口语语言，无法推断出说话人的意图，导致“社会用语失败”。

可见，美国俚语是非常口语化的东西，仅仅掌握书面英语或正式英语是不能在语言交流中游刃有余的。
2、短小精悍
从美国俚语构成来看，如：apple-polisher（马屁精）,green eyed（嫉妒）,dog
sleep（不时惊醒的睡眠）等，都体现了这一特点。
3、表达的丰富性
俚语的使用增加了语言表达的丰富性，使人们能够根据不同的场合，运用各种不同语体色彩的词汇表达同一事物或概念。例如：“小题大做”（make a fuss about
trifles） 这一概念，人们可以使用一句俚语 All right ,don’t make a meal of it。
4、称呼的亲昵化
