3.1Manyofthetermsusedinthistestmethodaredefined

4.SignificanceandUse

4.1Thistestmethodisprimarilycomparative.However,it

doeshaveapplicationasadiscriminatorindeterminingvaria-

tionsinadherendsurfacepreparationparametersandadhesive

environmentaldurability.Thetestmethodhasfoundapplica-

tionsincontrollingsurfacepreparations,primer,andadhesive

systemsfordeterminingstrengthpropertiesoftestedsystems.

5.Apparatus

5.1TestingMachine,hasaforcemeasurementaccuracyof

61%whencalibratedincompliancewithPracticesE4

requirementsandcapableofmaintainingaspecifiedrateof

ladingandcomprisingessentiallythefollowing:

5.1.1FixedMember—Afixedoressentiallystationary

member,carryingonegrip.

5.1.2MovableMember,carryingasecondgrip.

5.1.3Grips,forholdingatestspecimenbetweenthefixed

memberandthemovablemember.Usetheself-aligningtype.

Thegripsshallbeattachedtothefixedandmovablemember,

respectively,insuchawaythattheywillmoveintoalignment

assoonasanyloadisapplied,sothatthelongaxisofthetest

specimenwillcoincidewiththedirectionoftheappliedpull

throughthecenterlineofthegripassembly.Whilethedesign

ofgripsofthistypeisoptional,onethathasbeenfound

satisfactoryisshowninFig.1.

6.TestSpecimens

6.1UsespecimensinaccordancewithFig.2.Reuseofthe

specimensisallowedbyresurfacingthosesurfaceareasthat

containedtheadhesive.Dothisbygrindingtheadhesive-faced

surfaceflatandparallel.Metalsconformingtothefollowing

8.1Placethespecimeninthegripsofthetestingmachine;

takingcaretoalignthespecimenandthegripswithan

imaginarylinejoiningthepointsofattachmentofthegripsto

themachine.Starttestloadingofthespecimenasquicklyas

possible.

8.2SpeedofTesting—Forallmaterialsapplyaloadtothe

specimenof544.3to635kg(1200to1400lb)/min,oradjust

thecrossheadspeedofthetestingmachinesothattheloadcan

beaccuratelydetermined,butnottoexceed127mm/min

(0.050in./min)whenthemachineisrunningidle.

8.3Record—Recordthemaximumloadcarriedbythe

specimenatfailureandalsothefollowing:

8.3.1Thepercentageofcohesion,adhesion,andcontact

failures(Note1).Thiswillbebasedonavisualinspection.

NOTE1—Cohesivefailuremaybeobtainedbyobservinghowmuchofthefailurehasoccurredintheadhesiveitself.Thatis,ifthecementhasadheredtothemetaltestpiecesandnovoidsarevisual,itrepresentsa100percentcohesivefailure.Adhesionfailurereferstothelackofadheringtometalsbeingfastened.Contactfailurereferstolackofgluelinesbeingincontactduetounevensurfaces,poorpressuredistribution,etc.

9.Calculations

9.1Tensilestrengthofthespecimensisthebreakingload.

Expresstheresultingramspersquaremillimetre(poundsper

squareinch)andifpossiblereporttothreesignificantfigures.9.2Foreachseriesoftestscalculatethearithmeticmeanof

allthevaluesobtainedandreportasthe“averagevalue.”

ingtypes,source,manufacturer’scodenumbers,form,etc.
