I felt a little nervous, but tried my best to stay calm like my teacher said. We had listened to English listening practice tests for weeks to get ready.Finally, it was time to begin! I was already feeling kind of tired, but my mom packed me an energy bar which I inhaled in about 15 seconds! The testing room didn't have air conditioning which was rough. Thankfully, I brought a small hand fan with me to cool myself off.The next section was all about grammar and vocabulary. Yuck, my least favorite! We had to identify errors in sentences, choose the right words to fill in blanks, and put sentencestogether in the proper logical order. There were style and tone questions too where you had to understand the writer's attitude. Man, some of those grammatical terms and rules are just so confusing to me. I did a lot of guessing, not gonna lie!After that was the writing section at the very end. We had to write a short essay of around 100-150 words in response to a prompt. The prompt I got was "What are the benefits of learning a foreign language? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer." I tried my best, but I'm just not a very strong writer. It's hard for me to organize my thoughts clearly and avoid repeating myself. This is where we had to read all these chapters and stories and articles, then answer comprehension questions. The passages were sooooo long and had such fancyvocabulary. I'm still learning lots of basic English words in school, so I definitely didn't know tons of the harder words they used. They gave us a few paragraphs in Chinese and we had to translate them into English. And they gave us an English paragraph to translate to Chinese too. I'm awful at translation! I can barely say basic sentences smoothly in English, how am I supposed to translate a whole passage? I just tried to translate word-by-word as best as I could.After going through all four of those brutal sections, I was so relieved when the test was finally over. My brain felt like mush! I could hardly think straight. As soon as I turned in my test papers, I went outside and just collapsed on the grass. I was that exhausted!My friends and I all agreed that the test was incredibly difficult this year. Way harder than any of the practice tests our teachers made us do. I really hope I did okay. Getting into a good high school is so important. If you don't go to one of the best schools, it'll be way harder to get into a top university later. I was sooo nervous beforehand but I'll tell you all about how it went.First off, my mom woke me up super early that morning, like way before the sun even came up. She made me eat a huge breakfast even though I didn't feel hungry at all because my belly was filled with butterflies. I had rice porridge, eggs, and vegetables. My mom said I needed brain food to do well on the test.Then we hopped in the car and drove to my middle school. There were sooo many students there, it looked like an anthill with everyone rushing around! We had to line up outside the gym to get checked in and get our test materials. The teachers were very serious and kept shushing everyone. No talking allowed!Finally we got to go inside the gym and find our desks. There were rows and rows of individual desks facing the front. I felt like a little ant being put in its own cubby. The teachers made sure we were seated properly with the right test booklets and answer sheets. They went over all the rules again very slowly andseriously. No cheating, no talking, no leaving the room except for bathroom breaks. Keep our eyes on our own papers at all times. I nodded my head a million times to show I understood.At last, after what felt like eleventy billion years, the teachers said we could begin the listening portion. Oh man, those recordings were sooo fast! They played each one only twice before moving on to the next question. My ears were straining so hard to catch every word. The speakers we heard were using all kinds of accents too - American, British, Australian. On a couple of them I could barely understand anything at all! I just had to guess a lot for those.After the frantic listening part, we moved on to the reading comprehension. This part was... well, sort of comprehensible for me at least. The passages were pretty interesting. One was about the biography of a famous explorer, another was about coral reefs and their importance. The questions weren't too terrible, but they were testing little details within each paragraph that I hadn't focused enough on. I ran out of time before finishing that section fully.Oh but wait until you hear about the cloze test! This part had passages with like every 5th word missing, and you had to choose the right word to fill in the blanks from a list of choices.Some of the vocabulary and idioms were so advanced my brain felt like it was going to combust into flames. I must have gotten a ton of those wrong. My brain pretty much turned to mush by the end of that awful section.The writing part was probably my strongest section, at least in my opinion. We had to write a short essay arguing whether schools should have uniforms or not. I thought uniforms were a great idea to promote unity and prevent bullying over clothing choices. So I wrote all about that, using examples of how uniforms benefit students. Hopefully I organized my ideas okay!Phew, I was finally done after two and a half intense hours of flipping through that test booklet and filling in enough ovals to replace the dots on a million ladybugs. I felt so relieved to turn it all in. On the ride home I maybe took a little nap...or a medium nap since I was so tuckered out.Well that's my tale of the big exam! I'm just crossing all my fingers and toes now hoping I did well enough to get into one of the good high schools around here. No matter what though, that test pushed my English skills right to their limits.
