Once upon a time a man appeared in a village and announced (宣布) to the villagers
that he would buy monkeys for $10 each.
The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys 1 , went out to the forest

Al是个不会讲英语的移民,通过勤奋学习,他的英语讲得很流利。因为努力工作他当上了消防队长。在9.11事件中他受伤了,退休后,他决心回报社会,成立了一个组织,名叫爱国者组织。
Al was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador (厄瓜多尔) in 1951. He moved to New York in
1960, and he started in the 3rd grade and spoke no English. He overcame a lot of
difficulties in his studies, and later he spoke English quite well.
After leaving college, he worked in the New York City Fire Department in 1977
and was assigned (指派) to Engine 1 in midtown Manhattan. In 1996 Al turned captain
because of his hard work.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Al was working to rescue people after
the 1st falling of the South Tower in the World Trade Center and was caught in the
2nd falling of the North Tower. He was buried for more than an hour, then rescued
and taken to Jersey City Medical Center.
After his long recovery (复原) and being retired, he felt it was time to give
back to society. He started a not-for-profit organization called the Patriot (爱国者) Group. The first meeting was held in Dublin, Ireland and all the money they
collected went to the Children’s Burn Unit in Crumlin Hospital, Dublin. During
the planning of the meeting, fire officer Joe McCloskey in Northern Ireland was
killed while fighting a hotel fire. Some money was raised for Joe’s family.
Al married his wife Eileen in 1979 and they have three children. Al has worked
hard his whole life starting from being a non-English speaker to work his way up
to head of the Fire Department. He has written a book about his experiences. He
lives a simple life but contributes a lot to society.
